Created by Forbes, a member of the French Etching Club, while he travelled with the Union Army from 1862-1865. Marked "Plate 35." Depicts pickets trading for coffee and tobacco between the fortified lines during a truce. the enemy's works, protected by abattis and cheveaux-de-frise, are seen in the background, with groups of soldiers on the parapet. The landscape is dominated by left over tree stumps. The forest was probably decimated to make the fortifications in the background.
