Commemoration of the Battle of Solferino, June 24, 1859, during the Italian campaign, victory of the army of Napoleon III (1808-1873) allied with the Sardinian army, against the Austrian army of Emperor Francois Joseph I (1830-1916), conflict of the promise made by Napoleon III to King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy (Victor Manuel) (Vittorio Emanuele) (1820- 1878) to reunite Italy in exchange for the attachment of Nice and Savoy to the French territory. This battle mobilized nearly 220,000 soldiers, and is celebrated here by the figure of Colonel de Malleville (died 1859) whose bravery at the head of the 55th regiment led to a decisive victory.
