Elasmosaurus - Artist's view of two Elasmosaurus, of the great marine reptiles of the cretace, swimming under the gaze of Ichthyornis. A pair of 40-foot-long Elasmosaurus engage in a swimming courtship dance in a secluded pool 80 million years ago in what is today North America. The gull-like birds are Ichthyornis, the Cretaceous ecological equivalent of modern seabirds such as gulls, petrels, and skimmers. At over two tons, Elasmosaurus was an air-breathing carnivorous reptile with flippers for limbs and a relatively small head with sharp teeth. More than half of its length was neck which had more than 70 vertebrae, more than any other animal
Prestosuchus - Prestosuchus was a 5-metre-long Triassic predator living in Brazil. Prestosuchus had powerful legs that indicate that he was a fast runner. His closest relatives are Saurosuchus and Postosuchus. A 15-foot-long, 500 pound rauisuchian archosaur of the genus Prestosuchus wanders amidst cycads and ferns in swamp 230 million years ago in what is today Brazil. With long powerful legs, sharp teeth and a crocodile-like body, Prestosuchus was probably an ambush predator and likely a fast runner. In the foreground to the Prestosuchus 'left is a foot-long prehistoric amphibian known as a labyrinthodont
Tanystropheus - Two Tanystropheus, six-metre-long marine reptiles, swim in a bay in China 230 million years ago. A pair of 20-foot-long, 300 pound reptiles of the genus Tanystropheus swim in an ocean bay 230 million years ago in what is today China. On the shore are a pair of 6-foot-long bipedal basal saurischian dinosaurs and beyond them on the horizon are 60-foot-tall araucarians, an ancient family of coniferous trees. Horsetails and ferns flourish near the water. Tanystropheus was not a dinosaur, rather it was an ancient marine reptile, an archosaur, that hunted ocean shores at a time when true dinosaurs were only making their first appearance on land. Tanystropheus was likely a fish-eater due to its long, narrow snout and sharp interlocking teeth typical of marine predators. Tanystropheus had an extraordinarily long neck, as long as its body and tail combined, though with only ten vertebrae it was likely not very flexible. Here Tanystropheus are shown extending their head and necks fully out of the water, which may have indeed been possible due to a heavy and muscular counter-balancing tail
