Mars - Illustration - Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of the planet Mars. The three volcanoes of Tharsis and Olympus Mons are visible on the left. In the centre is the great canyon Valles Marineris. A “” full””” Mars. In this image the massive volcano Olympus Mons is clearly visible upper left of center, while near center are the three Tharsis Montes volcanoes. All these volcanoes are believed to be extinct. To the right of the Tharsis Montes are the deep canyons of Valles Marineris, a meandering network of channels as long as the United States is wide. Mars has been known historically as a bright, reddish “” star”” in Earth's sky. The ruddy hue is due to the presence of iron oxide (i.e., rust) on the martian surface. Mars is often host to white clouds of water - ice crystals (like the high - altitude cirrus clouds on Earth) and experiences seasonal dust storms that can cover the entire planet
Earth 200 million years ago - Artist's view - Early Jurassic Earth - Earth seen at the beginning of the Jurassic, about 200 million years ago. The western hemisphere is representative, the north is up. The Pangee has just split, forming Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south. This is how the western hemisphere of the Earth may have appeared 200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic period. North is at the top. During this period continental drift, driven by the massive forces of plate tectonics, had just begun to break the supercontinent of Pangea into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south. In this image the nascent North American continent has just broken away from North Africa while South America and the rest of Africa remain joined as Gondwana. To the west in the global Panthalassa ocean are strips of land corresponding to the Wrangellia Terrane which later merged with western North America
Earth at the end of Permian - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth - A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have either fallen or fallen back to Earth in a meteorite rain. A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today. 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune. Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites

Le Soleil vu par SDO on 12 January 2015 - The Sun seen by SDO - January 12 2015 - Solar eruption (bright spot on the right) seen by SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) on 12 January 2015. The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 11:24 p.m. EST on Jan. 12, 2015. Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun constantly, captured an image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however - when intense enough - they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel
Pluto seen by the New Horizons probe - Pluto seen by New Horizons - Pluto seen by the New Horizons probe. Composite image created from four images obtained on 13 July 2015 at a distance of 450,000 km from the dwarf planet. Four images from New Horizons' Long Range Recognition Imager (LORRI) were combined with color data from the Ralph instrument to create this global view of Pluto. (The lower right edge of Pluto in this view currently lacks high - resolution color coverage.) The images, taken when the spacecraft was 280,000 miles (450,000 kilometers) away, show features as small as 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers), twice the resolution of the single - image view taken on July 13
Saturn seen by the Cassini probe - Saturn seen by Cassini spacecraft: Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on 28 October 2016. Images taken on Oct. 28, 2016 with the wide angle camera using red, green and blue spectral filters were combined to create this color view. This view looks toward the sunlit side of the rings from about 25 degrees above the ringplane. The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 870,000 miles (1.4 million kilometers) from Saturn. Image scale is 50 miles (80 kilometers) per pixel
Le Soleil en maximum solaire - The Sun seen by SDO - Composite - Le Soleil vu en ultraviolet by SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) from February 11, 2013 to February 11, 2014. Image composed of 25 different images, illustrating the sun in high activity. This image is a composite of 25 separate images spanning the period of February 11, 2013 to February 11, 2014. It uses the SDO AIA wavelength of 304 Angstroms and reveals the zones on the sun where active regions and associated eruptions most commonly occur during Solar Maximum
Comparison between Earth and Mars - Earth and Mars compared - Comparison at the scale of Earth and Mars sizes. The diameter of the planet Mars is half the diameter of the Earth. Mars' diameter is half that of the Earth's It has ten percent the mass If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 68 pounds on Mars. Mars is half again further from the Sun than the Earth The vast deserts of North Africa are no match for the planet-wide desert that is Mars. While the Earth is host to oceans of liquid water and has a relatively dense water-rich atmosphere, Mars is exceedingly dry, cold, and so far as we know, sterile. It is believed that Mars lost most of its water to space a long time ago, and any water that remains is frozen at the poles and locked deep in the ground as permafrost. It is an interesting coincidence that the total surface area of Mars is about the same as the surface area of dry land on the Earth

Pluto seen by the New Horizons probe: Pluto seen in false colors by the New Horizons probe. Composite image created from images obtained on July 14, 2015 - Nasa's New Horizons spacecraft captured this high-resolution enhanced color view of Pluto on July 14, 2015. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). Pluto's surface sports a remarkable range of subtle colors, enhanced in this view to a rainbow of pale blues, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. Many landforms have their own distinct colors, telling a complex geological and climatological story that scientists have only just begun to decode. The image resolves details and colors on scales as small as 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers).

Neptune - Voyager 2 - Neptune has an equatorial diameter of about 49,000 kilometres. Its blue color is due to the abundance of methane in its atmosphere. On this photo, on the left, the Great Dark Spot, which is the size of the Earth where winds are blowing at 300 m/s. This spot has now disappeared but other dark spots have been detected since then. Image of Neptune obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on August 16, 1989. During August 16 and 17, 1989, the Voyager 2 narrow - angle camera was used to photograph Neptune almost continuously, recording approximately two and one - half rotations of the planet. These images represent the most complete set of full disk Neptune images that the spacecraft will acquire. This picture from the sequence shows two of the four cloud features which have been tracked by the Voyager cameras during the past two months. The large dark oval near the western limb (the left edge) is at a latitude of 22 degrees south and circuits Neptune every 18.3 hours. The bright clouds immediately to the south and east of this oval are seen to substantially change their appearances in periods as short as four hours. The second dark spot, at 54 degrees south latitude near the terminator (lower right edge), Neptune circuits every 16.1 hours. This image has been processed to enchance the visibility of small features, at some sacrifice of color fidelity

The Earth 650 million years ago - Artist's view - Snowball Earth - The Earth seen in a period of glaciation (Varanger glaciation), about 650 to 630 million years ago. This is how the Earth may have appeared about 650 million years ago during a period when snow and ice may have covered most, if not all, of the Earth's surface and oceans. This image suggests the Earth's appearance during the Marinoan glaciation from 650 to 630 million years ago. The southern and eastern hemispheres are dominated by glacier - covered land masses while the opposing hemisphere is frozen ocean save for a few areas of exposed liquid water, AKA refugia for the Earth's surviving soft - bodied multicellular organisms. In addition to the Marinoan glaciation there may have been at least two, and possibly three previous Proterozoic glacial periods going back to two billion years ago. The causes of these snowball periods are unknown but may have been due to massive volcanic eruptions, massive meteoritic impacts (both resulting in global sun - reflecting ash clouds), or variance's in the Earth's orbit
Cross-section view of the Earth - Earth cutaway - Internal structure of the Earth. On the surface, the crust forms a bark of about 7 km under the oceans and 30 to 40 km under the continents. Below is the mantle, a 2900 km thick rock belt. The outer core is composed of liquid metal, mainly iron and nickel. The inner core, or seed, is composed of the same alloy but is solid. Art cutaway of Earth showing interior structure. The surface is a crust, a thin layer of solid rock about 7 km thick under the oceans and 30 to 40 km thick where there are continents. Below is the mantle, 2900 km thick layer of molten rock. The outer core consists of liquid metal, mostly iron and nickel. The inner core has a similar composition but is solid
Uranus - Illustration - The planet Uranus and its system of rings. This image suggests how Uranus might look from a position in space several hundred thousand miles above its south pole. Like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus is a Gas Giant, composed primarily of hydrogen and helium gases surrounding a relatively small, dense core of molten rock and metal. Its bluish color is due to the presence of methane in its upper atmosphere. Also like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus has rings. However Uranus' rings are over three orders of magnitude dimmer than Saturn's; where Saturn's rings are almost white, Uranus' rings are more like the color of charcoal. Uranus 'rings are so dim that they went undetected from 1781, when the English astronomer William Herschel first observed Uranus through a telescope, until 1977 when astronomers watched as a star passing behind Uranus appeared to blink several times, caused by the ten rings surrounding the planet. One bizarre aspect of Uranus is that its axis of rotation is tipped beyond 90 degrees in relation to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. This puts Uranus' north and south poles, relative to the Sun, where the other planets have their equators
The Earth 600 million years ago - Artist's view - Ediacaran Earth - The Earth seen about 600 million years ago after an important period of glaciation. This is how the Earth may have appeared 600 million years ago following the Cryogenian “” Snowball Earth”” period. The worldwide glaciers have melted and the ocean is largely liquid again. During this, the Ediacaran period, it is hypothesized that all of the Earth's landmasses had merged into a single supercontinent known as Pannotia, also known as the Vendian supercontinent. Surrounding this massive landmass is the vast Panthalassic Ocean, also known as Panthalassa. While the ocean was home to a variety of evolving multicellular life forms including the ubiquitous Dickinsonia costata, it is not believed that life had moved to dry land with possible exception of bacteria and other microbial colonies

Saturn seen in infrared by Cassini spacecraft - Saturn seen in infrared by Cassini spacecraft - Composite image of Saturn in false colours obtained from infrared observations collected by the Cassini probe on 24 February 2007 at a distance of 1.58 million km from the planet. Flying over the unlit side of Saturn's rings, the Cassini spacecraft captures Saturn's glow, represented in brilliant shades of electric blue, sapphire and mint green, while the planet's shadow casts a wide net on the rings. This striking false - color mosaic was created from 25 images taken by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer over a period of 13 hours, and captures Saturn in nighttime and daytime conditions. The visual and infrared mapping spectrometer acquires data simultaneously at 352 different wavelengths, or spectral channels. Data at wavelengths of 2.3, 3.0 and 5.1 microns were combined in the blue, green and red channels of a standard color image, respectively, to make this false - color mosaic. This image was acquired on Feb. 24, 2007, while the spacecraft was 1.58 million kilometers (1 million miles) from the planet and 34.6 degrees above the ring plane. The solar phase angle was 69.5 degrees. In this view, Cassini was looking down on the northern, unlit side of the rings, which are rendered visible by sunlight filtering through from the sunlit, southern face. On the night side (right side of image), with no sunlight, Saturn's own thermal radiation lights things up. This light at 5.1 microns wavelength (some seven times the longest wavelength visible to the human eye) is generated deep within Saturn, and works its way upward, eventually escaping into space. Thick clouds deep in the atmosphere block that light. An amazing array of dark streaks, spots, and globe - encircling bands is visible instead. Saturn's strong thermal glow at 5.1 microns even allows these deep clouds to be seen on portions of the dayside (left side), especially where overlying h

Pluto seen by the New Horizons probe - Pluto seen by New Horizons - Pluto seen by the New Horizons probe on July 7, 2015 at a distance of 8 million km from the dwarf planet. In the early morning hours of July 8, 2015, mission scientists received this new view of Pluto - - the most detailed yet returned by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) aboard New Horizons. The image was taken on July 7, when the NASA spacecraft was just under 5 million miles (8 million kilometers) from Pluto, and is the first to be received since the July 4 anomaly that sent the spacecraft into safe mode. This view is centered roughly on the area that will be seen close - up during New Horizons' July 14 closest approach. This side of Pluto is dominated by three broad regions of varying brightness. Most prominent are an elongated dark feature at the equator, informally known as “” the whale,”” and a large heart - shaped bright area measuring some 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) across on the right. Above those features is a polar region that is intermediate in brightness

Saturn en jour seen by Cassini - Backlit Saturn seen by Cassini - Image obtained by the Cassini probe on October 17, 2012 at a distance of 800,000 km from the planet. At the bottom left of the image, the two brilliant dots are the Enceladus and Tethys satellites. Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has delivered a glorious view of Saturn, taken while the spacecraft was in Saturn's shadow. The cameras were turned toward Saturn and the sun so that the planet and rings are backlit. (The sun is behind the planet, which is shielding the cameras from direct sunlight.) In addition to the visual splendor, this special, very - high - phase viewing geometry lets scientists study ring and atmosphere phenomena not easily seen at a lower phase. Also captured in this image are two of Saturn's moons: Enceladus and Tethys. Both appear on the left side of the planet, below the rings. Enceladus is closer to the rings; Tethys is below and to the left. This view looks toward the non - illuminated side of the rings from about 19 degrees below the ring plane. Images taken using infrared, red and violet spectral filters were combined to create this enhanced - color view. The images were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft wide - angle camera on Oct. 17, 2012 at a distance of approximately 500,000 miles (800,000 kilometers) from Saturn. Image scale at Saturn is about 30 miles per pixel (50 kilometers per pixel)

Le Soleil vu by SDO on December 6, 2010 - The Sun seen by SDO. December 6, 2010 - Le Soleil vu en ultraviolet by SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) on December 6, 2010. It shows a gas filament of nearly a million miles breaking. A very long solar filament that had been snaking around the Sun erupted on December 6, 2010 with a flourish. Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) caught the action in dramatic detail in extreme ultraviolet light of Helium. It had been almost a million km long ((about half a solar radius) and a prominent feature on the Sun visible over two weeks ago before it rotated out of view. Filaments are elongated clouds of cooler gases suspended above the Sun by magnetic forces. They are rather unstable and often break away from the Sun

Earth 90 million years ago - Artist's view - Late Cretaceous Earth - Earth seen in the upper cretace, about 90 million years ago. This is how the western hemisphere of the Earth may have appeared 90 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. During this period continental drift, driven by the massive forces of plate tectonics, had broken the supercontinent of Pangea into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south. With a climate much warmer than today's there were no frozen polar caps and the resulting high ocean levels submerged a third of today's landmasses under warm shallow seas creating numerous waterways and “” island””” continents. In this image much of the incipient North American continent is divided by the Western Interior Seaway, the Isthmus of Panama is submerged by the Proto - Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean is making an incursion into South America
Saturn seen by the Cassini probe - Saturn northern hemisphere seen by Cassini spacecraft: Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on 25 April 2016. Cassini scanned across the planet and its rings on April 25, 2016, capturing three sets of red, green and blue images to cover this entire scene showing the planet and the main rings. The images were obtained using Cassini's wide-angle camera at a distance of approximately 1.9 million miles (3 million kilometers) from Saturn and at an elevation of about 30 degrees above the ring plane. The view looks toward the sunlit side of the rings from a Sun-saturn-spacecraft angle, or phase angle, of 55 degrees.

This is how Uranus and its tiny satellite Puck might look from a position in orbit around Puck. Puck in turn orbits Uranus at a height of 37 thousand miles above Uranus' cloud tops, completing one orbit in about 18 hours. Due to the fact that Puck's orbit is on the same plane as Uranus' rings, they would appear as little more than a thin line from this vantage punin

The view is in natural color, as human eyes would have seen it. This mosaic was made from 36 images in three color filters obtained by Cassini's imaging science subsystem on Oct. 10, 2013 - A bright, narrow wave of clouds around 42 degrees north latitude appears to be some of the turbulent aftermath of a giant storm that reached its violent peak in early 2011. The mysterious six-sided weather pattern known as the hexagon is visible around Saturn's north pole - The rings shown here include Saturn's main rings. The rings known as the C, B and A rings - listed here in order of closeness to Saturn - are easily seen. The F ring is also there, but not easily seen without enhancing the contrast of the image. (Rings were named in order of their discovery rather than their position around Saturn.) The rings also cast a shadow on Saturn at the limb of the planet in the lower right quadrant
Pluto - Pluto - The dwarf planet Pluto seen by the Hubble space telescope. These images, recomposed by computer from cliches obtained in 2002 and 2003, are not sufficiently precise to show Pluto's surface in detail but reveal color differences. This is the most detailed view to date of the entire surface of the dwarf planet Pluto, as constructed from multiple NASA Hubble Space Telescope photographs taken from 2002 to 2003. Hubble's view isn't sharp enough to see craters or mountains, if they exist on the surface, but Hubble reveals a complex - looking and variegated world with white, dark - orange, and charcoal - black terrain. The overall color is believed to be a result of ultraviolet radiation from the distant Sun breaking up methane that is present on Pluto's surface, leaving behind a dark, molasse - colored, carbon - rich residue. The center disk (180 degrees) has a mysterious bright spot that is unusually rich in carbon monoxide frost. This region will be photographed in the highest possible detail when Nasa's New Horizons probe flies by Pluto in 2015. The Hubble images are a few pixels wide. Earth - The geoid - Earth's geoid - The Earth's geoid, an image of the inegalites of the Earth's gravitation field. Image centred on Indonesia. Image obtained by the GOCE satellite in 2011. ESA's GOCE mission has delivered the most accurate model of the 'geoid' ever produced, which will be used to further our understanding of how Earth works. A precise model of Earth's geoid is crucial for deriving accurate measurements of ocean circulation, sea - level change and terrestrial ice dynamics. The geoid is also used as a reference surface from which to map the topographical features on the planet. In addition, a better understanding of variations in the gravity field will lead to a deeper understanding of Earth's interior, such as the physics and dynamics associated with volcanic activity and earthquakes
