GAIA satellite - Illustration - View of the European satellite GAIA against a milky lane background. The objective of the Gaia mission is to carry out the largest possible census of the stars of our Galaxy and to create a 3D map of a very precise 3D map. The satellite will determine the position, color and proper movement of a billion stars. Gaia was launched since Kourou on December 19, 2013. Artist's print of Gaia. Gaia is an ambitious mission to chart a three - dimensional map of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, in the process revealing the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will provide unprecedented positional and radial velocity measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic census of about one billion stars in our Galaxy and throughout the Local Group. This amounts to about 1 per cent of the Galactic stellar population. Combined with astrophysical information for each star, provided by on - board multi - colour photometry, these data will have the precision necessary to quantify the early formation, and subsequent dynamical, chemical and star formation evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. Additional scientific products include detection and orbital classification of tens of thousands of extra - solar planetary systems, a comprehensive survey of objects ranging from huge numbers of minor bodies in our Solar System, through galaxies in the nearby Universe, to some 500,000 remote quasars. It will also provide a number of stringent new tests of general relativity and cosmology. Gaia was launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on December 19, 2013

Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - The Southern Triangle constellations, the Fly, and the Southern Cross are also visible. Circinus (the drawing Comppass) is an inconspicuous constellation introduced by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, who observed the southern sky from the Cape of Good Hope between 1750 and 1754. He named 14 constellations, many of them associated with science or navigation, such as Microscopium and Telescopium, Octans the Octant and Antlia Pneumatica, the air pump. Circinus contains no bright or named stars and covers 93 square degrees, making it the fourth - smallest. Triangulum Australe is the southern hemisphere counterpart of Triangulum. It is a bigger constellation and contains brighter stars than Triangulum and it never sets for most of Australia. Its brightest star is named Atria (for alpha Trianguli Australis), in the manner of Acrux in the Southern Cross. It is easily seen near a and ss Centaurus. Crux and Musca are also visible in this image
Constellation of Sobieski's ECU - Constellation of Scutum - Scutum (The Shield) was originally Scutum Sobiescianum, Sobieski's Shield, and was introduced in 1690 by the astronomer/cartographer Johannes Hevelius, one - time mayor of Gdansk (Danzig), in honour of Polish warrior - King John Sobieski. King John distiguished himself in defending his land against the Turks in 1683, turning them back at the gates of Vienna. For this he was hailed by the Pope and others as the savior of Vienna and Western European Civilization. Scutum was created in honor of this victory, and alpha Scuti named Ioannina (Greek for John) in his honor. Scutum is small, 84th in size out of the 88 modern constellation. It contains no bright stars, and seems to have been carved out of adjoining Aquila and Serpens simply embrace a fine piece of the Milky Way. However, the open clusters M11 and M26 can be found here
Constellation Swan - Cygnus constellation - At the top, the brightest star in the constellation Swan, Deneb. On top of the image is Deneb, the brighest star of the constellation Cygnu
Constellations of the Telescopium and Sagittarius - The Telescope is a small constellation of the southern hemisphere located just above Sagittarius
Constellation of the Altar - Constellations of Ara, Norma and Telescopium - The Altar is a constellation of the southern hemisphere located between the Centaur and the Wolf. Also visible are the constellations of the Rule and the Telescope. Ara (the Altar) is an inconspicuous constellation in the southern sky. It was once considered part of Centaurus and Lupus but became separated when the 'modern' constellation Norma was created by Lacaille in the 1750s. It was recognised by the Greeks and Romans and was visualised as the altar on which the Centaur, Centaurus, was to sacrifice Lupus, the Wolf. This is reflected in its Latin name, Ara Centauri. The constellation is the 63rd largest in the sky and covers about 237 square degrees. The best - known objects in this field are some diffuse dusty nebulae and star clusters. The only named star in Ara is Karnot Mizbeach (ss Ara). Best seen in the early evening in July

Our galaxy -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity. The artist's concept also includes a new spiral arm, called the “Far-3 kiloparsec arm,””” discovered via a radio-telescope survey of gas in the Milky Way. This arm is shorter than the two major arms and li

Eagle and Fleche Constellations - Aquila and Sagitta constellations - The brightest star of this constellation is Altair. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is the center of an almost perfect alignment of three stars and is located about 16 years - light from the Sun. Above the small constellation of the Fleche. Aquila (the Eagle) well represents a mythological bird that was the companion of Jupiter. It lies in the northern Milky Way and contans rich fields of stars particularly in the western half and into adjoining Scutum. The brightest star in the constellation is Altair (Arabic for flying eagle), which is at one corner of the Summer Triangle (Altair, Deneb and Vega). Sagitta (the Arrow) is the third smallest constellation in the sky, and although it contains no bright stars, was well known to the ancient Greeks. Its arrow seems directed through Vulpecula and Pegasus towards Andromeda, skirting Cygnus. These constellations are a little north of the celestial equator and can be seen from all inhabited parts of the planet. Best seen in the early evening in Augus

Above right, Orion, and above Sirius, on the left, Procyon in Canis Minor. Betelgeuse, Procyon and Sirius composes an asterism named the winter triangle
Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar

Halley's comet - Halley's comet - Halley's comet seen on April 10, 1986 in Peru. Glowing at 6th magnitude, Comet Halley exhibits a faint 90 degree wide fan - shaped dust tail. The dust tail is very difficult to see in this photo because it is superimposed on the bright background of the Milky Way. The blue ion tail is a bit easier to see, trailing off to the upper right of the coma. This photo was taken on April 10 1986, the day of Halley's closest approach to the Earth. Stars appear as streaks because the photo was guided on the comet which was moving rapidly relative to the starry background

The comet is located here just southwest of the Scorpius Jewel Box and IC 4628. Bright star clouds in this region made Halley's tail difficult to distinguish from the background. Antares and the Rho Ophiuchus region is at upper left, and the Milky Way is punctuated by numerous red emission nebula as well as sweeping clouds of obscuring dust

Cephee Constellation - Constellation of Cepheus - At the bottom left, the constellation Cassiopee; at the top, the bright star is the polar star. Cepheus is a representation of King Cepheus of Ethiopia, who has stellar connections, being husband to Cassiopeia and the father of Andromeda. It is a large northern constellation of 588 square degrees, 27th out of 88 in size and is best seen in the early evening in November. It is distinguished by having two unusual stars that are easily seen. Delta Cephei is the prototype for an intrinsically bright class of regularly pulsating variable stars whose period of variability is closely related to their absolute magnitudes. The brightest stars have the longest period, so distance can be estimated by measuring the period and the apparent magnitude of a star. And these stars are bright, so the method can be extended to nearby galaxies. Mu (u) Cephei is an extremely red, irregular variable star easily seen in binoculars. This too is a prototype, of a class of stars known as semi - regular variables
Cassiopee Constellation - The constellation of Cassiopeia - Cassiopeia, was seen in mythology as the seated Queen of Ethiopia (not to be confused with the modern AEthiopia). She was the wife of Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda, beautiful but boastful. The grouping of moderately bright stars has a distinctive 'W' shape and lies in a rather faint part of the northern Milky Way. It is circumpolar for latitudes north of 50*. Occupying almost 500 square degrees of sky it is the 25th largest of the 88 modern constellations

Constellation Ophiuchus - Constellation of Ophiuchus - The constellation Ophiuchus separates the constellation of the Snake into two parts. The constellation of Ophiuchus is located between Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda, two parts of the constellation of Serpens. The southern part of Ophiuchus contains one of the darkest and most visually distinctive dark clouds of the Miky Way. It is popularly known as the Dark Horse nebula - - the body of the horse runs north - south and its legs point towards the bright star Antares. The hind quarters of the horse make up the (smoker's) Pipe nebula, with the stem pointing to Antares. The dust of forelegs reaches a long way in the direction of Antares, where it is illuminated by stars associated with Rho Ophiuchi to make a distinctive reflection nebula. The dusty clouds of the Dark Horse nebula hide the northern part of the Milky Way's central bulge. The southern part (in Sagittarius) is relatively unobscured. Without this dust the extent of the Milky Way's bulge would be much more apparent to the unaided eye and without it our understanding of the nature of our galaxy as a flattened disk might have come sooner

However, the open clusters M11 and M26 can be found here
Eagle and Fleche Constellations - Aquila and Sagitta constellations - The brightest star of this constellation is Altair. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. Constellations of the Altar, the Rule and the Telescope - Constellations of Ara, Norma and Telescopium - The Altar, in the center of the image, is a constellation of the southern hemisphere located between the Centaur and the Wolf. Also visible are the constellations of the Rule (right) and the Telescope.
Constellations of Sagittarius and the Southern Crown - Constellations of Sagittarius and Corona Australis - From ancient times the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer) was represented as a Centaur, half man, half horse, ready to fire his/its bow and arrow at the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. The constellation is the 15th largest in the sky and covers about 867 square degrees, including the brightest part of the Milky Way. It contains no fewer than 15 Messier objects. Sagittarius is a zodiacal constellation, so the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun, among the stars, pases through it, between M8 and M20. The much smaller constellation of Corona Australis (the Southern Crown) is quite distinctive to the eye though its stars are fainter than those in neighbouring Sagittarius. It is quite ancient having be recognised by Ptolemy, and one legend has it that it represents the coronet worn by Sagittarius. Who knows. It is 80th in size among the 88 constellations and covers 128 square degrees

Constellations of Telescope, Altar and Southern Crown - Constellations of Telescopium, Ara and Corona Australis - The Telescope is a small constellation of the southern hemisphere located under the Southern Crown. To his right is the constellation of the Altar. Telescopium is a faint constellation that was named by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his stay at the Cape of Good Hope between 1751 and 1752. It is utterly undistinguished and is best remembered as that unremarkable piece of sky to the west of Ara and between the distinctive circlet of Corona Australis and Peacock (alpha Pavonis), the brightest star in Pavo. Lacaille's original name was Tubus Telescopium, however, in the way of antique telescopes, it was shortened for convenience

Swan Constellation - Cygnus constellation - On the right, the bright star is Vega, in the constellation Lyra. Also visible are the constellations of the Fleche and the Petite Fox. Cygnus (the Swan), is clearly the bird flying along the northern Milky Way. Many legends refer to this distinctive constellation, including that of Zeus who disguised himself as a swan while visiting Leda, wife of the King of Sparta. This union resulted in Pollux, one of the heavenly twins. English legends see here the more prosaic outline of a flying hen in this part of the sky. Because Cygnus is in the Milky Way, it is rich in Galactic objects that are visible in binoculars and modest telescopes, notable are the enormous North America Nebula (NCG 7000) and the faint shreds of the Veil nebula, a supenova remnant that covers a patch of sky five times larger than the full Moon. Vulpecula (the Fox) is a faint constellation created by Johannes Hevelius, who called it Vulpecula Cum Anser, the Fox and Goose. Anser is the only named star in an otherwise undistinguished part of the sky
Part of the constellation Swan - Cygnus Milky Way - The constellation Swan dominates the richest part of the Lactee Way during the summer in the northern hemisphere. The large nebula broadcast IC 1396 in Cephee is visible to the extreme left of the image. The large dark nebula Le Gentil 3 is visible between IC 1396 and NGC 7000, the Nebula of North America, next to Deneb (the brightest star in this picture). Underneath, a smaller dark nebula, B168. The constellation of Cygnus, the Swan, dominates the richest part of the Milky Way in the sky overhead during the summer in the northern hemisphere. This beautiful area is full of dust and gas and star froming regions. The large red emission nebula IC 1396 in Cepheus is at the far left of the frame. The large dark nebula Le Gentil 3 is between IC 1396 and NGC 7000, the North America Nebula next to Deneb. A smaller dark nebula, B168, can be seen below. Another large area of emission nebulae containing IC 1318, the Butterfly Nebula, surrounds Sadr. NGC 6992, the brighter half of the Veil Nebula is faintly visible near the bottom center. The beautiful double star Albireo lies at the head of the Swan. The great rift in the Milky Way, a large area of obscuring dark matter, dominates the right side of the frame in Vulpecula, with CR399, the Coathanger asterism, centered on it at right
