The King Charles Spaniel is a small breed of dog popular with pet owners. In 17th-century Europe toy spaniels were a favourite 'lap dog'. King Charles II (1630-1685) was very fond of this type of dog, which is why the dogs of today carry his name, although there is no evidence that today's breed descended from his particular dogs. Henry Chalon specialised in sporting and animal painting. He was appointed Animal Painter to Frederica, Duchess of York, in 1795, and later to both the Prince Regent and King William IV.
