This free, ethereal study was preparatory for Murillo’s altarpiece in the Capuchin church of Seville. It might be a rare unfinished drawing by the artist, as the black chalk in his drawings is usually further developed with wash. On the other side is Saint Francis turning to Christ on the cross; the globe at his feet, referring to the saint’s rejection of the world.
