Galaxies Group: Stephan's Quintet in Pegase - Stephan's Quintet group of galaxies - This group of 5 galaxies is located about 260 million years ago - light from Earth. These galaxies are interacting, however the NGC 7320 galaxy (down in the middle) would be 8 times closer to us. Image obtained with a telescope of 50 cm, cumulative poses of 40 hours. This group of galaxies is located about 260 million light - years away in Pegasus constellation. They are gravitationally interacting with the exception of the interloper NGC 7320 (bottom center) which is a foreground galaxy. Image made with a 20 inches telescope, total exposure 40 Hours
Spiral galaxy NGC 247 in the whale - Spiral galaxy NGC 247 in Cetus - Dwarf spiral galaxy in the whale, located about 8 million years ago - light from Earth. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. It has a slightly irregular shape on one end where the spiral arm has a hollowed out appearance on long - exposure photographs. It is located about 5 degrees north of its famous neighbor in Sculptor, Galaxy NGC 253. It is about the same size as NGC 253, but two magnitudes fainter. Both galaxies are fairly close to us at 8 - 12 million light years

Open cluster M35 and NGC 2158 in Gemeaux - Open clusters M35 and NGC 2158 in Gemini - Open cluster M35 (NGC 2168) is visible to the naked eye under good conditions. NGC 2158, lower right, is weaker and is only observed at the telescope. M35 is about 2800 years of light from Earth and is about 110 million years old. Open Clusters M35 and NGC 2158 seen in the constellation Gemini. M35 is containing about 200 stars located approximately 2,800 light - years from Earth and estimated to be about 110 million years old. NGC 2158 is visible at bottom right of the image. It is located 4 or 5 times more distant than M35 and is estimated to be about 1 to 1.5 billion years old
Dunkleosteus and Cladoselache - Dunkleosteus & Cladoselache - A Dunkleosteus approaches a Cladoselache, the ancestor of sharks. Dunkleosteus, formerly called Dinichthys, is a large fossil placoderm. He lived in the Upper Devonian, between 415 and 360 million years. The largest representatives of the genus were approximately 8-10 m long and weighed around 5 tonnes. These fish were probably the greatest marine predators of their time. A 30-foot-long, four-ton hypercarnivorous apex predator of the species Dunkleosteus terrellix is about to make a meal of a six-foot-long primitive shark of the genus Cladoselache 370 million years ago in the Rheic Ocean near what is today North America. Dunkleosteus terrellix was one of the largest arthrodire placoderms ever to have lived. Almost as long as a school bus, It was heavily armored and therefore likely a relatively slow, but powerful swimmer. There are four Cladoselache/primitive sharks in this image. The schooling fish are generic representatives of the class Actinopterygii, a sub-class of the bony fishes which emerged about 420 million years ago, while the sea jellies are generic representatives of the subphylum Medusozoa
Allosaurus among the sequoias - Allosaurus amidst Sequoias - A couple of allosaurus (allosaurus, carnivorous dinosaur) foraging in the middle of a sequoia forest. The adult male allosaur is recognizable with its orange “” horns””. For 5 million years, allosaurs were the most frequent carnivores in North America. A pair of Allosauruses search for dinner in the pre-twilight of a lush mountainside forest. The orange “” horns”” on the foreground Allosaurus identifies this as an adult male, while his female companion behind attempts to make a meal of an unfortunate terrapin. 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period, giant Sequoias - also known as Redwoods - may have populated all of the northern continents. These evergreens grow as tall as 370 feet and some have trunk diameters exceeding 25 feet. The only living Sequoias today - and some are over 2,000 years old - occupy a narrow strip of land along the North American Pacific coast. Also during the late Jurassic, a large, carnivorous dinosaur known as Allosaurus is likely to have hunted in the shade of the first Sequoias. For 5 million years Allosaurus was the most common large carnivore in North America. Growing as long as 40 feet and weighing up to two tons, this fierce predator probably had few, if any rivals
Galaxies NGC 3718 in the Great Bear - Galaxy NGC 3718 in Ursa Major - NGC 3718 (Arp 214) is a special galaxy located about 42 million years ago - light from the Earth in the constellation Big Bear. It's an active nucleus galaxy. Its tormented form is probably due to the attraction exerted by another galaxy, NGC 3729 (off-field). On the right, Arp 322 (or Hickson 56), is a group of 5 galaxies far farther away, located about 300 million years from Earth. NGC 3718 (Arp 214) seems to have a rudimentary bar and spiral structure although it is recognized as a peculiar galaxy and as such is listed within ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. NGC 3718 contains an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and is known as a Seyfert type 1.9 galaxy. Its strange shape is probably due to a gravitational interaction with its companion NGC 3729 (out of field). A grouping of 5 background galaxies 300 million light years distant are projected at right of NGC 3718 and are designated Arp 322 (also Hickson 56). Several members of the group appear to be a strongly interacting
Chesapeake Bay - USA - Chesapeake Bay seen from space - Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the United States houses an impact crater about 80 km in diameter buried more than 300 metres deep. This crater, dating back to 35.5 million years, was discovered in 1983. Mosaic of six photographs obtained by the Landsat-5 satellite between 2009 and 2011. In 1983 the largest impact crater of the United states of America has been discovered there. With a diameter of 80 km, this 35.5 million year - old crater is buried more than 300 meters beneath the lower part of the bay. Mosaic of six Landsat 5 images collected in July 2009 and 2011.The Washington D.C. - Baltimore - Philadelphia - New York City corridor can be clearly seen (look for silvery purple) as can the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays and the coastal Atlantic barrier islands from Fishermans Island, Virginia to Sandy Hook, New Jersey
Open cluster of Pleiades seen in infrared - The Pleiades open cluster seen in infrared - Clouds of dust in the Pleiades cluster seen in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope. The Pleiades star cluster contains about 500 stars formed 100 million years ago. It is located 440 light years from Earth, in the constellation Taurus. The Pleiades, located more than 400 light - years away in the Taurus constellation, is a star cluster born when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, about 100 million years ago. It is significantly younger than our 5 - billion - year - old sun. The brightest members of the cluster, also the highest - mass stars, are known in Greek mythology as two parents, Atlas and Pleione, and their seven daughters, Alcyone, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta, Celaeno and Asterope. There are thousands of additional lower - mass members, including many stars like our sun. Some scientists believe that our sun grew up in a crowded region like the Pleiades, before migrating to its present, more isolated home. The infrared image from Spitzer highlights the filaments, colored yellow, green and red in this view, made up of dust associated with the cloud through which the cluster is traveling. The densest portion of the cloud appears in yellow and red, and the more diffuse outskirts are shown in green hues. One of the parent stars, Atlas, can be seen at the bottom left, while six of the sisters are visible at top. Additional stars in the cluster are sprinkled throughout the picture in blue
Postosuchus - Postosuchus was a 5-metre-long, 4-ton Triassic predator living in North America. He is a close relative of the crocodiles we know today. A 12-foot-long, 1,000 pound rauisuchian archosaur of the genus Postosuchus wanders a hilltop 220 million years ago in what is today Texas. Surrounding the Postosuchus are various cycads, ferns, and tree-like Glossopteridales. With a crocodile-like body and tyrannosaurlike head, Postosuchus was likely a fierce apex predator that preyed upon Dicynodonts and other animals smaller than itself, including some of the first dinosaurs
Galaxies NGC 3718 and NGC 3729 in the Great Bear - Galaxies NGC 3718 and NGC 3729 in Ursa Major - NGC 3718 is a special galaxy located about 42 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation of the Great Bear. It's an active nucleus galaxy. Its tormented shape is probably due to the attraction exerted by another galaxy, NGC 3729, visible to its left. To the south, Arp 322 (or Hickson 56), is a group of 5 galaxies far farther away, located about 300 million light years away from Earth. NGC 3718 and its companion NGC 3729 (left) are physically related members of the Ursa Major galaxy cluster. The two galaxies appear to orbit each other at a projected separation of 147,000 light years. NGC 3718 (Arp 214) seems to have a rudimentary bar and spiral structure although it is recognized as a peculiar galaxy and as such is listed within ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. Galaxies Group: Stephan's Quintet in Pegase - Stephan's Quintet group of galaxies - Image obtained with the Hubble space telescope. This group of 5 galaxies is located about 270 million light years away from Earth. In this image three star-forming regions are visible: in the long arm of NGC 7319 (near the center); the gas debris of two galaxies, NGC 7318B and NGC 7318A (upper right); and in the upper left. Blue indicates that these stars are young. The NASA Hubble Space Telescope photo shows three regions of star birth: the long, sweeping tail and spiral arms of NGC 7319 [near center]; the gaseous debris of two galaxies, NGC 7318B and NGC 7318A [top right]; and the area north of those galaxies, dubbed the northern starburst region [top left]. The clusters' bluish color indicates that they're relatively young. Their ages span from about 2 million to more than 1 billion years old. The brilliant star clusters in NGC 7318B's spiral arm (about 30,000 light - years long) and the northern starburst region are between 2 million and more than 100 million years old. NGC 7318B instigated the starburst by barreling through the region. The bully galaxy is just below NGC 7318A at top right. Although NGC 7318B appears dangerously close to NGC 7318A, it's traveling too fast to merge with its close neighbor. The partial galaxy on the far right is NGC 7320, a foreground galaxy not physically bound to the other galaxies in the picture. About 20 to 50 of the clusters in the northern starburst region reside far from the coziness of galaxies. The clusters were born about 150,000 light - years from the nearest galaxy. A galaxy that is no longer part of the group triggered another collision that wreaked havoc. NGC 7320C [not in the photo] plowed through the quintet several hundred million years ago, pulling out the 100,000 light - year - long tail of gaseous debris from NGC 7319. The clusters in NGC 7319's streaming tail are 10 million to 500 mi
Prestosuchus - Prestosuchus was a 5-metre-long Triassic predator living in Brazil. Prestosuchus had powerful legs that indicate that he was a fast runner. His closest relatives are Saurosuchus and Postosuchus. A 15-foot-long, 500 pound rauisuchian archosaur of the genus Prestosuchus wanders amidst cycads and ferns in swamp 230 million years ago in what is today Brazil. With long powerful legs, sharp teeth and a crocodile-like body, Prestosuchus was probably an ambush predator and likely a fast runner. In the foreground to the Prestosuchus 'left is a foot-long prehistoric amphibian known as a labyrinthodont
The Mango bloossom/flowers are produced in terminal panicles 10-40 cm long; each flower is small and white with five petals 5-10 mm long, with a mild sweet odor suggestive of lily of the valley. After the flowers finish, the fruit takes from three to six months to ripen. The exact origins of the mango are unknown but most believe that it is native to Southern and Southeast Asia including India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh owing to the wide range of genetic diversity in the region and fossil records dating back 25 to 30 million years. Cratere Manicouagan - Quebec - January 2014 - The Manicouagan Impact Crater reservoir in Quebec, Canada - Cratere d'impact Manicouagan, Quebec, seen from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 2, 2014. This 100-kilometre crater formed 212 million years ago, following the fall of an asteroid on Earth. One of the Expedition 38 crew members aboard the Earth - orbiting International Space Station recorded this image which features the Manicouagan Crater and reservoir located primarily in Manicouagan Regional County Municipality in the Cote - Nord region of Quebec, Canada. Scientists believe the crater was caused by the impact of a 5 kilometer (3 mile) diameter asteroid about 215.5 million years ago (Triassic Period). The crater is a multiple - ring structure about 100 kilometers (60 miles) across, with its 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter inner ring as its most prominent feature; it contains a 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter annular lake, the Manicouagan Reservoir, surrounding an inner island plateau, Rene - Levasseur Island. Because it is so unique and easily recognizable from the sky and space, the crater has been the subject of hundreds of images from astronauts for 45 - plus years. 2 Jan 2014
Clubs R136 in the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) - Central region of the Tarantula Nebula - The Tarantula Nebula (or 30 Bream) is the largest star-forming region of the Magellan Cloud. It is located 170,000 light years ago in the constellation Dorado (southern hemisphere). In the center of this nebula, the open cluster of R136 stars (on the right), clusters of young, hot and massive stars, age barely 5 million years. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 2009. The Tarantula is situated 170,000 light - years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the southern sky and is clearly visible to the naked eye as a large milky patch. To thr right of the image there is a huge cluster of very hot stars called R136. The stars in R136 are also among the most massive stars we know. R136 is also a very young cluster, its oldest stars being 'just' 5 million years old or so. Its smallest stars, however, are still forming. The image, taken in ultraviolet, visible, and red light by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, spans about 100 light - years. The Hubble observations were taken Oct. 20 - 27, 2009. The blue color is light from the hottest, most massive stars; the green from the glow of oxygen; and the red from fluorescing hydrogen
Central region of the Tarantula Nebula - The Tarantula Nebula - The Tarantula Nebula (or 30 Dorada) is the largest star-forming region of the Magellan Cloud. It is located 170,000 light years ago in the constellation Dorado (southern hemisphere). At the center of this nebula, the open cluster of R136 stars, clusters of young, hot and massive stars, aged just 5 million years. Mosaic of 5 images obtained by the Hubble space telescope. Vast Star - Forming Region 30 Doradus Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a panoramic portrait of a vast, sculpted landscape of gas and dust where thousands of stars are being born. This fertile star - forming region, called the 30 Doradus Nebula, has a sparkling stellar centerpiece: the most spectacular cluster of massive stars in our cosmic neighborhood of about 25 galaxies. The mosaic picture shows that ultraviolet radiation and high - speed material unleashed by the stars in the cluster, called R136, are weaving a tapestry of creation and destruction, triggering the collapse of looming gas and dust clouds and forming pillar - like structures that are incubators for nascent stars. The photo offers an unprecedented, detailed view of the entire inner region of 30 Doradus, measuring 200 light - years wide by 150 light - years high. The nebula resides in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way), 170,000 light - years from Earth. Nebulas like 30 Doradus are the “” signposts”” of recent star birth. High - energy ultraviolet radiation from the young, hot, massive stars in R136 causes the surrounding gaseous material to glow. Previous Hubble telescope observations showed that R136 contains several dozen of the most massive stars known, each about 100 times the mass of the Sun and about 10 times as hot. These stellar behemoths all formed at the same time about 2 million years ago. The stars in R136 are producing intense “” stellar winds”” (
Desmatosuchus - Desmatosuchus is a fossil genus of Archosaurians who lived in the Upper Triassic of Texas. He cotoyed the first dinosaurs, like Coelophysis. It was about 5 metres long and 1.5 metres high. It was one of the largest Aetosaurs. 15-foot-long, 750 pound aetosaurian archosaurs of the genus Desmatosuchus search for edible roots amidst cycads and ferns 230 million years ago in what is today Texas. Armored plates and spikes, with some spikes up to 18 inches long, helped protect this otherwise vulnerable crocodile-like herbivore from the many terrestrial predators of the period including rauisuchian archosaurs like Postosuchus. Desmatosuchus is also notable for its unusual pig‑like head and shovel-like snout which were likely well-suited for uprooting small plants
Cepheides in the galaxy M81 - Cepheids in the galaxy M81 - Cepheides are very bright variable stars that serve as cosmic beacons to measure distance from nearby galaxies. Their pulse period is measured and their absolute luminosite is calculated. By comparing the result to their apparent luminosite in the sky, they can be calculated accurately. Here, the space telescope identified cepheides in the M81 galaxy; astronomers were able to deduce a new distance for this galaxy; it would be 11 million years - light from Earth; previous estimates gave a figure of 18 million light years. Image obtained in 1993. Astronomers have discovered variable stars in the spiral galaxy M81, and measured the distance of the galaxy to be 11 million light - years (3.4 megaparsecs). They quote a 10% uncertainty in this result (plus or minus approximately one million light - years). Previous estimates of the galaxy's distance have ranged from 4.5 to 18 million light - years (1.4 to 5.6 megaparsecs). The astronomers used the Hubble '5 Wide Field & Planetary Camera to study two fields in M81. In each field they took 22 twenty - minute exposures spread over 14 months to find the variable stars and measure their periods and brightness. Cepheids are pulsating stars that become alternately brighter and fainter with periods ranging from 10 to 50 days. Astronomers have known for over 50 years that the periods of these stars precisely predict their total luminous power, which allows their distance to be measured. Messier 81 is a large spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It is a rotating system of gas and stars similar to our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, but approximately twice as massive. This galaxy achieved prominence three months ago when the brightest northern supernova this century was discovered. In the expanding universe, the Hubble Constant (H0) is the ratio of the rec
Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - This cluster of stars is located about 25,000 light years away from Earth. It is one of the most extensive (165 years - light) and one of the oldest known globular clusters. Globular clusters are generally peoples of very old stars, but here the Hubble space telescope has identified some young stars, blue stragglers. The globular cluster Messier 5, shown here in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, is one of the oldest belonging to the Milky Way. The majority of its stars formed more than 12 billion years ago, but there are some unexpected newcomers on the scene, adding some vitality to this aging population. Stars in globular clusters form in the same stellar nursery and grow old together. The most massive stars age quickly, exhausting their fuel supply in less than a million years, and end their lives in spectacular supernovae explosions. This process should have left the ancient cluster Messier 5 with only old, low - mass stars, which, as they have aged and cooled, have become red giants, while the oldest stars have evolved even further into blue horizontal branch stars. Yet astronomers have spotted many young, blue stars in this cluster, hiding among the much more luminous ancient stars. Astronomers think that these laggard youngsters, called blue stragglers, were created either by stellar collisions or by the transfer of mass between binary stars. Such events are easy to imagine in densely populated globular clusters, in which up to a few million stars are tightly packed together. Messier 5 lies at a distance of about 25 000 light - years in the constellation of Serpens (The Snake). This image was taken with Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys
Detail of the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) in the Dorado - Central region of the Tarantula Nebula - The Tarantula Nebula (or 30 Dorado) is the largest star-forming region of the Magellan Cloud. It is located 170,000 light years ago in the constellation Dorado (southern hemisphere). At the center of this nebula, the open cluster of R136 stars, clusters of young, hot and massive stars, aged just 5 million years. Mosaic of 15 images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The Tarantula is situated 170,000 light - years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the Southern sky and is clearly visible to the naked eye as a large milky patch. Astronomers believe that this smallish irregular galaxy is currently going through a violent period in its life. It is orbiting around the Milky Way and has had several close encounters with it. It is believed that the interaction with the Milky Way has caused an episode of energetic star formation - part of which is visible as the Tarantula Nebula. Just above the centre of the image there is a huge cluster of very hot stars called R136. The stars in R136 are also among the most massive stars we know. R136 is also a very young cluster, its oldest stars being just”” 5 million years old or so. Its smallest stars, however, are still forming, so astronomers observe R136 to try to understand the early stages of stellar evolution. Near the lower edge of the image we find the star cluster Hodge 301. Hodge 301 is almost 10 times older than R136. Some of the stars in Hodge 301 are so old that they have already exploded as supernovae. The shockwave from this explosion has compressed the gas in the Tarantula into the filaments and sheets that are seen around the cluster.
Traces of the impact crater Chicxulub - Chicxulub impact crater - Excessive relief view of the Yucatan peninsula obtained from radar altimetric data acquired by the SRTM instrument aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in 2000. An arc of circle is visible to the north-west of the peninsula, marking the outer edge of the Chicxulub impact crater whose centre is located off the Mexican coast. This meteorite impact would have caused the disappearance of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This shaded relief image of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula show a subtle, but unmistakable, indication of the Chicxulub impact crater. Most scientists now agree that this impact was the cause of the Cretatious - Tertiary Extinction, the event 65 million years ago that marked the sudden extinction of the dinosaurs as well as the majority of life then on Earth. Most of the peninsula is visible here, along with the island of Cozumel off the east coast. The Yucatan is a plateau composed mostly of limestone and is an area of very low relief with elevations varying by less than a few hundred meters (about 500 feet.) In this computer - enhanced image the topography has been greatly exaggerated to highlight a semicircular trough, the darker green arcing line at the upper left corner of the peninsula. This trough is only about 3 to 5 meters (10 to 15 feet) deep and is about 5 km. wide (3 miles), so subtle that if you walked across it you probably would not notice it, and is a surface expression of the crater's outer boundary. Scientists believe the impact, which was centered just off the coast in the Caribbean, altered the subsurface rocks such that the overlying limestone sediments, which formed later and erode very easily, would preferentially erode on the vicinity of the crater rim. This formed the trough as well as numerous sinkholes (called cenotes) which are visible as small circular depressions. Two visualization methods were combined to produce the image: shading a

Stegosaur and allosaur - Allosaurus meets Stegosaurus - Meeting between an allosaurus (allosaurus, carnivorous dinosaur) and a stegosaur (stegosaurus, herbivore dinosaur) in a Jurassic forest. The stegosaur moves back by walking on a pachypteris, causing a little lezard to escape. An Allosaurus stumbles upon a grazing Stegosaurus in a Jurassic Redwood forest. While it's probable that the 30 foot, 2 ton Allosaurus preyed upon large herbivores, I doubt that one would have risked a direct confrontation with an adult Stegosaurus, which could weigh as much as 5 tons and wields a powerful tail tipped with 3-foot spikes. Adding to its survivability, Stegosaurus 'front legs may have been strong enough to allow it to pivot and swing its entire backside around to ward off an assault. In addition to Redwoods and varieties of fern, this Jurassic-period forest includes the now extinct Pachypteris, an arboreal plant that grew to a height of 10 feet and populated every major continent 160 million years ago (in this image, the Stegosaurus is stepping back onto a Pachypteris, obliging a smaller lizard to abandon its roost)
Galapagos Islands - The Galapagos Islands seen from the space shuttle - Galapagos Islands (Isabela, the largest, Fernandina, San Salvador and part of Santa Cruz) seen by the space shuttle Endeavour in May 1996. The Galapagos Islands seen from the space shuttle Endeavour in May 1996. Isabela, the largest of the Galapagos Islands; Fernandina; San Salvador; and a partial view of Santa Cruz, are apparent in this southwest - looking, low - oblique photograph. Located on the equator 600 miles (1000 kilometers) west of Ecuador, the rugged volcanic islands began forming 4 to 5 million years ago. Sea - horse - shaped Isabela Island covers 1771 square miles (4588 square kilometers) and has five active volcanoes. Fernandina Island, west - southwest of Isabela, covers 248 square miles (642 square kilometers) and has a single large active volcano with a very distinct caldera that is sometimes filled with water. East - northeast of Isabella lies San Salvador that covers 226 square miles (585 square kilometers). The islands, famous for their diversity of unique wildlife, were visited in 1835 by Charles Darwin, who gathered data that was later used in support of the theory of natural selection
Hubble ultra deep field - In the southern constellation of the furnace, the Hubble space telescope posed 270h to obtain this image of the distant universe. Approximately 10,000 galaxies distant from 5 to 13 billion light years are visible in this image. This view of nearly 10,000 galaxies is the deepest visible - light image of the cosmos. Called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, this galaxy - studded view represents a “” deep”” core sample of the universe, cutting across billions of light - years. The snapshot includes galaxies of various ages, sizes, shapes, and colors. The smallest, reddest galaxies, about 100, may be among the most distant known, existing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies - the larger, brighter, well - defined spirals and ellipticals - thrived about 1 billion years ago, when the cosmos was 13 billion years old. In ground - based photographs, the patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one - tenth the diameter of the full Moon) is largely empty. Located in the constellation Fornax, the region is so empty that only a handful of stars within the Milky Way galaxy can be seen in the image. In this image, blue and green correspond to colors that can be seen by the human eye, such as hot, young, blue stars and the glow of Sun - like stars in the disks of galaxies. Red represents near - infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, such as the red glow of dust - enshrouded galaxies. The image required 800 exposures taken over the course of 400 Hubble orbits around Earth. The total amount of exposure time was 11.3 days, taken between Sept. 24, 2003 and Jan. 16, 2004
Galaxies Group: Stephan's Quintet in Pegase - Stephan's Quintet group of galaxies - This group of 5 galaxies is located about 260 million years ago - light from Earth. These galaxies interact, however NGC 7320 (upper left) would be 7 times closer to us. Composite image obtained in visible light and infrared by the Hubble space telescope in August 2009. This portrait of Stephan's Quintet, also known as the Hickson Compact Group 92, was taken by the new Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) aboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Stephan's Quintet, as the name implies, is a group of five galaxies. The name, however, is a bit of a misnomer. Studies have shown that group member NGC 7320, at upper left, is actually a foreground galaxy that is about seven times closer to Earth than the rest of the group. Three of the galaxies have distorted shapes, elongated spiral arms, and long, gaseous tidal tails containing myriad star clusters, proof of their close encounters. These interactions have sparked a frenzy of star birth in the central pair of galaxies. This drama is being played out against a rich backdrop of faraway galaxies. The image, taken in visible and near - infrared light, showcases WFC3's broad wavelength range. The colours trace the ages of the stellar populations, showing that star birth occurred at different epochs, stretching over hundreds of millions of years. The camera's infrared vision also peers through curtains of dust to see groupings of stars that cannot be seen in visible light. NGC 7319, at top right, is a barred spiral with distinct spiral arms that follow nearly 180 degrees back to the bar. The blue specks in the spiral arm at the top of NGC 7319 and the red dots just above and to the right of the core are clusters of many thousands of stars. Most of the Quintet is too far away even for Hubble to resolve individual stars. Continuing clockwise, the next galaxy appears to have two cores, but it is actually t

Swan Lace - detail - This is an image of a small portion of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant, taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera on Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope on April 24, 1991. The Cygnus Loop marks the edge of a bubble - like, expanding blast wave from a colossal stellar explosion which occurred about 15,000 years ago. The supernova blast wave is slamming into tenuous clouds of interstellar gas. This collision heats and compresses the gas, causing it to glow. The shock acts as a searchlight by revealing the structure of the interstellar medium. Hubble's detailed image shows the blast wave overrunning dense clumps of gas. Although HST can reveal details about as small as our Solar System, the clumps are still unresolvable. This means that they must be small enough to fit inside our Solar System, making them relatively small structures by interstellar standards. A bluish ribbon of light stretching left to right across the picture might be a knot of gas ejected by the supernoya. This interstellar “” bullet,”” traveling over three million miles per hour (5 million km), is just catching up with the shock front (which has been slowed by plowing into interstellar material). The Cygnus Loop appears as a faint ring of glowing gases about three degrees across (six times the diameter of the Full Moon), located in the northern constellation Cygnus the Swan. The supernova remnant is within the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy and is 2,600 light - years away. Supernova remnants play an important role in stellar evolution by enriching space with heavy elements, and triggering new star formation by compressing interstellar gas. Technical Details: The photo is a combination of separate images taken in three colors. Oxygen atoms (blue) emit light at temperatures of 30,000 to 60,000 degrees Celsius (50,000 to 100,000 degrees Fahrenheit). Hydrogen atoms (green) arise throughout the region of shocked gas. Sulfur atoms (red) form when the gas cools to around 10,000 by
