Artist's view of a first human crew on Mars - Martian Pioneers - The first human visitors to Mars would face an environment nearly as hostile as the Earth's Moon. While Mars has an atmosphere, it contains no breathable oxygen and is so thin that the surface air pressure is about the same as the Earth's 18 miles above sea level. To venture outside, humans would need hardy suits that would supply pressure, oxygen, moisture, warmth, and insulate them from the fine martian dust that may be both abrasive and caustic. Even with these precautions, humans would still be vulnerable to radiation from solar storms and the continual rain of interstellar cosmic rays

The Orion MPVC module - artist view - Orion spacecraft exploded view - Ecorchee view of the module lives in Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. An artist's impression of the Orion spacecraft and its components including ESA's service module. The Crew Module sits atop the service module and can hold four astronauts and cargo. This the only part of Orion designed to reenter Earth's atmosphere: the heatshield protects it against the intense heat of reentry at 32,000 km/h. The European Service Module (ESM) provides electricity, propulsion, air and water, and forms part of the vehicle's structure, like a car chassis. More information about the module is given on separate pages to the left. A Crew Module Adapter (CMA) connects the capsule to the ESM. It houses electronic equipment for communications, power and control, and includes a bridge that connects electrical, data and fluid systems between the main modules. A number of elements are required only during launch and are discarded shortly before entering space. The Spacecraft Adapter attachments Orion to its launch vehicle. The Spacecraft Adapter Jettisonable Fairings offer aerodynamic protection during launch. When the vehicle is high enough above Earth, the fairings are jettisoned to fall into the ocean. As Orion ferries people to space and back, safety is paramount. If anything were to go wrong during launch, an abort will propel the crew capsule up and away from the danger, returning it to the ground by parachute. The Launch Aort System forms the nose of the complete launcher and has rockets of its own that fire in an emergency. It, too, is discarded at altitude

Lunar vehicle test. Program constellation - Lunar vehicle test. Constellation program - Lunar vehicle test as part of the Nasa constellation program that is expected to take men to the Moon around 2020. Here, a prototype of a pressurised vehicle that would allow future astronauts to travel long distances. October 2008, Arizona, USA. During the 2008 Desert RATS tests at Black Point Lava Flow in Arizona, engineers, geologists and astronauts came together to test Nasa's new Small Pressurized Rover. The tests showed that using a pressurized rover would enable astronuats to explore more territory on the lunar surface by allowing them to live for days at a time inside the rover as they travel greater distances from their habitat than would be possible in an unpressurized rover
The Orion MPVC module - Artist view - Artist view of the module lives Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. Artist's concept of the Orion Service Module. When the Orion spacecraft blasts off atop Nasa's Space Launch System rocket in 2017, attached will be the ESA - provided service module - the powerhouse that fuels and propels the Orion spacecraft. Orion will be the most advanced spacecraft ever designed and carry astronauts farther into space than ever before. It will sustain astronauts during space travel and provide safe re - entry from deep space and emergency abort capability. Orion will be launched by NASA's Space Launch System (SLS), a heavy - lift rocket that will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS will enable new missions of exploration and expand human presence across the solar system. The service module of the Orion spacecraft will provide support to the crew module from launch through separation prior to atmospheric re - entry

Exploration of Mars-Illustration - Mars rover rendezvous - The exploration of Mars by men will require vehicles that can take a crew long distances and will have to provide them with all the necessary protection against this hostile environment. A pair of manned Mars rovers rendezvous on the martian surface. Humans may one day explore the martian surface with the help of pressurized rovers that would provide a shirt sleeve environment while protecting them from the deadly extremes of the martian environment. In this image each rover provides transportation and life support for two crew members. By traveling in pairs each rover can provide backup for the other, and if necessary a single rover could serve as refuge and transportation for all four explorers

An artist's impression of the Orion spacecraft with ESA's service module. The module sits directly below Orion's crew capsule and provides propulsion, power, thermal control, and water and air for four astronauts. The solar array spans 19 m and provides enough to power two households. A little over 5 m in diameter and 4 m high, it weighs 13.5 tons. The 8.6 tons of propellant will power one main engine and 32 smaller thrusters

Lunar Vehicle Prototype - Crew Mobility Chassis Prototype - Crew Mobility Chassis Prototype as part of the constellation program that is expected to take men to the Moon around 2020. The Crew Mobility Chassis Prototype is Nasa's new concept for a lunar truck. Researchers are trying it out at Moses Lake, Wash., as part of a series of tests of lunar surface concepts. One feature is its high mobility. Each set of wheels can pivot individually in any direction, giving the vehicle the ability to drive sideways, forward, backward and any direction in between - important if the truck becomes mired in lunar dust, needs to zigzag down a steep crater wall or parallel park at its docking station. NASA currently is building the spacecraft and systems to return to the moon by 2020

Space Combination Test - Space follows test - Astronaut Andrew J. (Drew) Feustel is testing the new Mark III space suit, simulating a 10-kilometre walk, as part of the American return to the Moon program. Johnson space center, May 2006. Attired in a Mark III advanced space suit technology demonstrator, astronaut Andrew J. (Drew) Feustel participates in a 10-kilometer extravehicular activity (EVA) “” walk-back” test in the pogo test area of the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility at Johnson Space Center. Data collected in the test will be used in development of the next generation of space suits that are being designed for use in the Constellation Program. May 2006
Permanent station between Mars and Earth - Artist view - Mars lander departs cycler - Artist view - A landing ship (top left) leaves the Mars Cycler to land on the red planet. Mars Cycler is a space station placed in orbit between Mars and Earth whose trajectory would alternate between Mars and Earth. Once positioned in orbit, this gravitational assistance vessel would use very little fuel. This project would make a permanent link between the two planets. A manned Mars lander/return vehicle, upper left, disembarks from a Mars cycler for the surface of Mars. A Mars cycler is a permanently orbiting vehicle with a path that alternately brings it near Earth and Mars. Once a cycler has been accelerated into orbit it continues on its own momentum, going back and forth between the two planets, only requiring propellant for occasional course adjustments. A one-way trip between Earth and Mars involves six to eight months of space travel, therefore a large and well-equipped Mars cycler would offer space explorers, and possibly even space tourists, better accommodations for these long journeys. Smaller spacecraft would ferry travelers between the planets and the cycle
Astronauts on Titan - Illustration - First steps on Titan - Astronauts explore Titan's surface. Perhaps some day in the far future humans will set foot on Saturn's mysterious moon Titan, one of the most interesting worlds in the Solar System. Larger than the planet Mercury, Earth's moon, and the dwarf planet Pluto, and second only in size to Jupiter's satellite Ganymede, Titan is the only known extraterrestrial world with a dense atmosphere that realistically could be visited by humans. A visit to Titan would require a space journey of a year or more and traverse over 700 million miles. Beneath Titan's 350 miles of atmosphere, intrepid explorers would likely find a dark, forbidding landscape of rock, ice, and possibly tarry layers of hydrocarbons and lakes of liquid ethane and/or methane (AKA natural gas). The Surface temperature would be around minus 300* F, cold enough to freeze exposed human tissue within seconds. There would be no oxygen to breathe, and any water to be found would be as hard and dense as granite. Despite these harsh conditions, Titan could yet yield secrets regarding the origin of life itself as it is believed that, with the exception of the extreme cold, Titan resemble the primordial Earth at the time living organisms first appeared. In this image, Titan's first human visitors are protected by thick suits and helmets to shield them from the extreme cold - - and possibly toxic compounds such as hydrogen cyanide. They carry their own oxygen as Titan's atmosphere is primarily nitrogen with lesser amounts of argon, methane and other gases. Each explorer also carries “” head”” lights attached to their helmets to help them navigate a terrain that receives only 1/1000th the Sun's illumination on the Earth; while this means that noon on Titan would appear relatively dim, it would yet be over 300 times brighter than the Earth under a full moon
