Our galaxy -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity. Galaxy of the Wheel of the Charette in the Sculptor - The Cartwheel Galaxy - The ring galaxy of the Wheel of the Charette is about 500 million years away - light from the Earth. It is surrounded by a ring of 150,000 years - light of diameter composed of young and very bright stars. This particular form is the result of a collision, probably with one of the two galaxies on the right. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 1994. A rare and spectacular head - on collision between two galaxies appears in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope true - color image of the Cartwheel Galaxy, located 500 million light - years away in the constellation Sculptor. The details of star birth resolved by Hubble provide an opportunity to study how extremely massive stars are born in large fragmented gas clouds. The striking ring - like feature is a direct result of a smaller intruder galaxy - - possibly one of two objects to the right of the ring - - that careened through the core of the host galaxy. Like a rock tossed into a lake, the collision sent a ripple of energy into space, plowing gas and dust in front of it. Expanding at 200,000 miles per hour, this cosmic tsunami leaves in its wake a firestorm of new star creation. Hubble resolves bright blue knots that are gigantic clusters of newborn stars and immense loops and bubbles blown into space by exploding stars (supernovae) going off like a string of firecrackers. The Cartwheel Galaxy presumably was a normal spiral galaxy like our Milky Way before the collision. This spiral structure is beginning to re - emerge, as seen in the faint arms or spokes between the outer ring and bulls - eye shaped nucleus. The ring contains at least several billion new stars that would not normally have been created in such a short time span and is so large (150,000 light - years across) our entire Milky Way Galaxy would fit inside. IC 2944 in Centaur - Stellar nursery IC 2944 - View of the cluster of stars IC 2944 near which Bok's blood cells are visible. A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. This intriguing new view of a spectacular stellar nursery IC 2944 is being released to celebrate a milestone: 15 years of Eso's Very Large Telescope. This image also shows a group of thick clouds of dust known as the Thackeray globules silhouetted against the pale pink glowing gas of the nebula. These blood cells are under fierce bombardment from the ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot young stars. They are both being eroded away and also fragmenting, rather like lumps of butter dropped onto a hot frying pan. It is likely that Thackeray's globules will be destroyed before they can collapse and form new stars

Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carene - Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carina - The open cluster Westerlund 2 is located about 20,000 years - light in the southern constellation of Carene, within the nebula Gum 29. About 3000 stars form this cluster. It contains a significant number of massive stars including one of the most massive stars known to date: WR 20a. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The sparkling centerpiece of this image taken by the Hubble space telescope is a giant cluster of about 3,000 stars called Westerlund 2, named for Swedish astronomer Bengt Westerlund, who discovered the grouping in the 1960s. The cluster resides in a raucous stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light - years away from Earth in the constellation Carina. To capture this image, Hubble's near - infrared Wide Field Camera 3 near - infrared pierced through the dusty veil shrouding the stellar nursery, giving astronomers a clear view of the nebula and the dense concentration of stars in the central cluster. The cluster measures between 6 to 13 light - years across. The giant star cluster is only about 2 million years old and contains some of our galaxy's hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. Some of its heftiest stars unleash torrents of ultraviolet light and hurricane - force winds of charged particles that etch at the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud. The nebula reveals a fantasy landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys. Star Birth in Scorpio - Stellar nursery in Scorpius - RCW 120 is a star-forming region about 4200 years from Earth in the constellation Scorpio. In the center a hot and massive star emits powerful ultraviolet radiation, which ionize the surrounding gas, tearing off electrons from the hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of H - alpha emissions. As this ionized region extends into space, the associated shock wave meets the surrounding cold interstellar gas and cosmic dust. This gas becomes unstable and collapses under its own gravite forming dense, cold clouds or new stars will be born. These very cold clouds (- 250 degres Celsius) can only be detected in submillimetre wavelength; they appear here in blue thanks to the data obtained by the APEX telescope which observes this radiation. Illustrating the power of submillimetre - wavelength astronomy, an APEX image reveals how an expanding bubble of ionised gas about ten light - years across is causing the surrounding material to collapse into dense clumps that are the birthplaces of new stars. The region, called RCW120, is about 4200 light years from Earth, towards the constellation of Scorpius. A hot, massive star in its centre is emitting huge amounts of ultraviolet radiation, which ionises the surrounding gas, stripping the electrons from hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of so - called H - alpha emission. Here, the submillimetre emission is shown as the blue clouds surrounding the reddish glow of the ionised gas (shown with data from the SuperCosmoS H - alpha survey). The image also contains data from the Second Generation Digitized Sky Survey (I - band shown in blue, R - band shown in red). This image only shows the central part of the nebula, where the brightest stars at the core of the cluster are found, with part of the Pacman's hungry mouth visible as the dark region below. But Pacman isn't gobbling up these stars. Instead, the nebula's gas and dust are being used as raw ingredients to make new stars. However, the stars in IC 1590 are still plotting their escape from the Pacman Nebula, as open clusters are only loosely bound together and the grouping will eventually disperse within a few tens of millions of years. IC 1590 lies about ten thousand light - years from Earth in the constellation of Cassiopeia (The Queen). Through small telescopes the core of the cluster that appears at the top of this picture shows up as a triple star, but the nebula that surrounds it is much fainter and very hard to see

Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar

NGC 3521 is located about 35 million light years in the distance towards the northern constellation of Leo. This new deep image depicts multiple debris shells that evidence previous mergers with one or more satellite galaxies. NGC 3521 is an example of a flocculent galaxy. Galaxies are assigned this classification because they exhibit short, fragmented and somewhat disorganized spiral arms. Almost one third of all spiral galaxies display this characteristic to some extent. The cause of this condition remains elusive but recent observations have revealed that this galaxy has experienced a merger with one or more satellite galaxies

A star 40 times more massive than our Sun, called Wolf-Rayet, is responsible for the formation of this bubble; it is the star BD+60* 2522. Image obtained by the space telescope Hubble - The Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, is an emission nebula located 8 000 light-years away - This complete view of the Bubble Nebula allows us to fully appreciate the almost perfectly symmetrical shell which gives the nebula its name. This shell is the result of a powerful flow of gas - known as a stellar wind - from the bright star visible just to the left of centre in this image. The star, SAO 20575, is between ten and twenty times the mass of the Sun and the pressure created by its stellar wind forces the surrounding interstellar material outwards into this bubble-like form - The giant molecular cloud that surrounds the star - glowing in the star's intense ultraviolet radiation - tries to stop the expansion of the bubble. Orion's Trapeze - Trapezium Multiple Star System in Orion - Orion's Trapeze is one of the youngest open clusters known, with new stars still forming in this region. The Trapezium is the most famous multiple star system in the entire night sky. Located at the very heart of M42, the Orion Nebula, it is one of the youngest star clusters known. The four brightest stars in the Trapezium (A, B, C and D) are easily visible in a four inch telescope with decent optical quality under good seeing conditions. They range in brightness from magnitude 5 to magnitude 8. They can be seen merged together as one star to the unaided eye as the middle star in the sword of Orion. The image above shows the four brightest stars of the Trapezium at the center of the photo. The core of M42 surrounding the Trapezium is a blue - green color from the predominantly green spectral emission line of Oxygen III, with a smaller amount of blue - green mixed in from the hydrogen - beta emission line. These particular wavelengths also happen to be the wavelengths to which the human visual system is most sensitive for color vision. Much of the rest of the Orion Nebula has a lot of red hydrogen - alpha emission, but the eye is not very sensitive to this wavelength. Some red can be seen in the brightest parts of the nebula that emit hydrogen - alpha light by observers with sensitive color vision. For most people however, if they see any color at all, it will be a very pale green, or blue - green, from the Oxygen III spectral lines

The main objective of this scientific mission is to study the processes behind the solar wind, the heliospheric magnetic field, the energetic solar particles and the magnetic field of the Sun. Esa's Solar Orbiter is set to provide new views of our star, in particular providing close-up observations of the Sun's poles. Following its launch in February 2019 and three-year journey using gravity swingbys at Earth and Venus, Solar Orbiter will operate from an elliptical orbit around the Sun. A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. Near these blood cells shine blue stars; they belong to the young cluster of stars IC 1590. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 2005. These opaque, dark knots of gas and dust are called “” Bok globules,””” and they are absorbing light in the center of the nearby emission nebula and star - forming region. Bok hypothesized that giant molecular clouds, on the order of hundreds of light - years in size, can become perturbed and form small pockets where the dust and gas are highly concentrated. These small pockets become gravitationally bound and accumulate dust and gas from the surrounding area. If they can capture enough mass, they have the potential of creating stars in their cores; however, not all Bok globules will form stars. Some will dissipate before they can collapse to form stars. That may be what's happening to the globules seen here in NGC 281. Near the globules are bright blue stars, members of the young open cluster IC 1590. The cluster is made up of a few hundred stars. The club's core, off the image towards the top, is a tight grouping of extremely hot, massive stars with an immense stellar wind. The stars emit visible and ultraviolet light that energizes the surrounding hydrogen gas in NGC 281. This gas then becomes super heated in a process called ionization, and it glows pink in the image. A dying star that was once about five times the mass of the Sun is at the center of this nebula. It has ejected its envelope of gases and is now unleashing a stream of ultraviolet radiation that is making the cast - off material glow. This object is an example of a planetary nebula, so - named because many of them have a round appearance resembling that of a planet when viewed through a small telescope. The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a new camera aboard Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope, snapped this image of the planetary nebula, catalogued as NGC 6302, but more popularly called the Bug Nebula or the Butterfly Nebula. WFC3 was installed by NASA astronauts in May 2009, during the servicing mission to upgrade and repair the 19 - year - old Hubble telescope. NGC 6302 lies within our Milky Way galaxy, roughly 3,800 light - years away in the constellation Scorpius. The glowing gas is the star's outer layers, expelled over about 2,200 years. The “” butterfly”” stretches for more than two light - years, which is about half the distance from the Sun to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri. The central star itself cannot be seen, because it is hidden within a doughnut - shaped ring of dust, which appears as a dark band pinching the nebula in the center. Cepheides in the galaxy M81 - Cepheids in the galaxy M81 - Cepheides are very bright variable stars that serve as cosmic beacons to measure distance from nearby galaxies. Their pulse period is measured and their absolute luminosite is calculated. By comparing the result to their apparent luminosite in the sky, they can be calculated accurately. Here, the space telescope identified cepheides in the M81 galaxy; astronomers were able to deduce a new distance for this galaxy; it would be 11 million years - light from Earth; previous estimates gave a figure of 18 million light years. Image obtained in 1993. Astronomers have discovered variable stars in the spiral galaxy M81, and measured the distance of the galaxy to be 11 million light - years (3.4 megaparsecs). They quote a 10% uncertainty in this result (plus or minus approximately one million light - years). Previous estimates of the galaxy's distance have ranged from 4.5 to 18 million light - years (1.4 to 5.6 megaparsecs). The astronomers used the Hubble '5 Wide Field & Planetary Camera to study two fields in M81. In each field they took 22 twenty - minute exposures spread over 14 months to find the variable stars and measure their periods and brightness. Cepheids are pulsating stars that become alternately brighter and fainter with periods ranging from 10 to 50 days. Astronomers have known for over 50 years that the periods of these stars precisely predict their total luminous power, which allows their distance to be measured. Messier 81 is a large spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It is a rotating system of gas and stars similar to our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, but approximately twice as massive. Nebula N44 in the Large Magellan Cloud - Superbubble LHA 120 - N 44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud - This image obtained by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) shows the nebula N44 surrounding the cluster of stars NGC 1929. It is a star-forming region located in the galaxy of the Great Magellan Cloud, about 170,000 light years from Earth. Eso's Very Large Telescope captured this striking view of the nebula around the star cluster NGC 1929 within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. A colossal example of what astronomers call a superbubble dominates this stellar nursery. It is being carved by the winds from bright young stars and the shockwaves from supernova explosions. This nebula is officially known as LHA 120 - N 44, or just N 44 for short. Hot young stars in NGC 1929 are emitting intense ultraviolet light and causing the gas to glow. This effect highlights the aptly - named superbubble, a vast shell of material around 325 by 250 light - years across. For comparison, the nearest star to our Sun is just over four light - years distant. The N 44 superbubble has been produced by the combination of two processes. Firstly, stellar winds - - streams of charged particles from the very hot and massive stars in the central cluster - - cleared out the central region. Then massive cluster stars exploded as supernovae creating shockwaves and pushing the gas out further to form the glowing bubble. Although the superbubble is shaped by destructive forces, new stars are forming around the edges where the gas is being compressed. Like recycling on a cosmic scale, this next generation of stars will breathe fresh life into NGC 1929
Exoplanete Ross 128 b: Ross 128 b is an extrasolar planet probably of an Earth type, located only 11 light years from Earth in the constellation of the Virgin. Planet Ross 128 b, with its red dwarf parent star in the background. This planet, which lies only 11 light-years from Earth, was found by a team using Eso's unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life.

The dwarf planet, formerly known as 2003 UB313 (or Xena), is now called Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord and strife. This artist's concept shows the planet catalogued as 2003 UB313 at the lonely outer fringes of our solar system. Our Sun can be seen in the distance. The new planet, which is yet to be formally named, is at least as big as Pluto and about three times farther away from the Sun than Pluto. It is very cold and dark. The planet was discovered by the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif., on Jan. 8, 2005

Viewed face on, as it appeared about 30 million years ago, M74 is considered to be one of the most photogenic spiral galaxies in the sky. The galaxy is rich in young bright blue stars and glowing red regions of dust and molecular hydrogen where new stars are being created. M74, however, is quite camera shy - it has a low surface brightness that makes it challenging for both visual observers and astrophotographers to see it's entire form. The Chandra X - Ray observatory, discovered M74 to be the home of a super massive black hole, tucked away in one of it's outer arms. This black hole is one of the largest ever discovered and has the mass of over 10,000 suns
Open cluster Trumpler 5 in Unicorn - Open cluster Trumpler 5 in Monoceros - Trumpler 5 is a cluster of stars aged 125 million years. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope As they age, open clusters of stars begin to lose their identity. This is partly because the brighter members tend to self - destruct as supernovae, and, though the group members share a common motion through space, they are only loosely bound. Thus stars drift away from the cluster in a process that accelerates with time. However, some clusters are big enough to retain their identity much longer than usual, and Trumpler 5 is one such. Its age is estimated to be 125 million years, and it must have been a spectacular sight in its youth. It seems to be at the edge of the Monoceros molecular cloud, where star formation is continuing new generations of young clusters
Spiral Galaxy NGC 3810 in the Lion - Spiral galaxy NGC 3810 in Leo - NGC 3810 is a spiral galaxy located at a distance of about 50 million light years in the constellation Lion. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The bright galaxy NGC 3810 demonstrates classical spiral structure in this very detailed image from Hubble. The bright central region is thought to be forming many new stars and is outshining the outer areas of the galaxy by some margin. Further out the galaxy displays strikingly rich dust clouds along its spiral arms. A close look shows that Hubble's sharp vision also allows many individual stars to be seen. Hot young blue stars show up in giant clusters far from the center and the arms are also littered with bright red giant stars. NGC 3810 is located about 50 million light - years from Earth in the constellation of Leo (the lion). It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784 and is easily seen as a faint smudge in small telescopes

There are five distinct centers of star birth in this one image alone. Star - forming nebulae (called HII regions by astronomers) are clouds of gas and dust that have been heated up by nearby stars recently formed from the same cloud. The largest, brightest cloud, in the upper right is known as Gum 22. It's named after Colin Gum, an Australian astronomer who surveyed the southern hemisphere sky in the early 1950's looking for star - forming regions like these. He catalogued 85 new such regions, named Gum 1 to85 (Gum Crater on the moon was also named in his honor). Going counter - clockwise from Gum 22, the other catalogued nebulae in the image are Gum 23 (part of same cloud as 22), IRAS 09002 - 4732 (orange cloud near center), Bran 226 (upper cloud of the two at lower left), and finally Gum 25 at far lower left. There are also several smaller and/or more distant regions scattered throughout the image that have yet to be catalogued. Most of the regions are thought to be part of our local Orion spiral arm spur in the Milky Way galaxy. Their distances range from about 4,000 to 10,000 light - years away. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This annotated artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. It is surrounded by a ring of 150,000 years - light of diameter composed of young and very bright stars (detail at the top left). A rare and spectacular head - on collision between two galaxies appears in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope true - color image of the Cartwheel Galaxy, located 500 million light - years away in the constellation Sculptor. The details of star birth resolved by Hubble provide an opportunity to study how extremely massive stars are born in large fragmented gas clouds. The striking ring - like feature is a direct result of a smaller intruder galaxy - - possibly one of two objects to the right of the ring - - that careened through the core of the host galaxy. Like a rock tossed into a lake, the collision sent a ripple of energy into space, plowing gas and dust in front of it. Expanding at 200,000 miles per hour, this cosmic tsunami leaves in its wake a firestorm of new star creation. Hubble resolves bright blue knots that are gigantic clusters of newborn stars and immense loops and bubbles blown into space by exploding stars (supernovae) going off like a string of firecrackers. The Cartwheel Galaxy presumably was a normal spiral galaxy like our Milky Way before the collision. This spiral structure is beginning to re - emerge, as seen in the faint arms or spokes between the outer ring and bulls - eye shaped nucleus. The ring contains at least several billion new stars that would not normally have been created in such a short time span and is so large (150,000 light - years across) our entire Milky Way Galaxy would fit inside. Galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 in the Virgin - Galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 in Virgo - Arp 271 desks the two spiral galaxies of similar sizes in interaction NGC 5426 and NGC 5427. Located 90 million years ago - light in the constellation of Virgo, Arp 271 is about 130,000 years - light in diameter. Although it is uncertain whether this interaction leads to a fusion of galaxies, the galaxies are already gravitationally affected by each other and a bridge of matter has formed between the two. Image obtained with a telescope of 80 cm. NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 are two spiral galaxies of similar sizes engaged in a dramatic dance. It is not certain that this interaction will end in a collision and ultimately a merging of the two galaxies, although the galaxies have already been affected. Together known as Arp 271, this dance will last for tens of millions of years, creating new stars as a result of the mutual gravitational attraction between the galaxies, a pull seen in the bridge of stars already connecting the two. Located 90 million light - years away towards the constellation of Virgo (the Virgin), the Arp 271 pair is about 130 000 light - years across. It was originally discovered in 1785 by William Herschel. Quite possibly, our own Milky Way will undergo a similar collision in about five billion years with the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy, which is now located about 2.6 million light - years away from the Milky Way. This close - up, visible - light view by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope reveals new details of the Ring Nebula. The object is tilted towards Earth so that astronomers see the ring face - on. The Hubble observations reveal that the nebula's shape is more complicated than astronomers thought. The blue gas in the nebula's center is actually a football - shaped structure that pierces the red doughnut - shaped material. Hubble also uncovers the detailed structure of the dark, irregular knots of dense gas embedded along the inner rim of the ring. The knots look like spokes in a bicycle. The Hubble images have allowed the research team to match up the knots with the spikes of light around the bright, main ring, which are a shadow effect. The Ring Nebula is a well - known planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a Sun - like star. The tiny white dot in the center of the nebula is the star's hot core, called a white dwarf. The nebula is about 2,000 light - years away in the constellation Lyra. The structure measures roughly one light - year across. The Hubble observations were taken Sept. 19, 2011, by the Wide Field Camera 3. In the image, the deep blue color in the center represents helium; the cyan color of the inner ring is the glow of hydrogen and oxygen; and the reddish color of the outer ring is from nitrogen and sulfur

Hubble deep field sud - Hubble deep field south - In the southern constellation of Toucan, the Hubble space telescope posed 75h to obtain this image of the distant universe. Thousands of galaxies away from 1 to 12 billion light years are visible in this image. From Earth, the target field is the one “” that one would see through the eye of a needle held at arm's length.” If the distribution of galaxies over the entire Celestial vault were similar to this field, the number of galaxies observable up to magnitude 30 would be 50 billion. This picture is the culmination of a 10 - day - long observation called the Hubble Deep Field South which was carried out in October 1998. This new “” far - look”” complements the original Hubble “” deep field””” taken in late 1995, when Hubble was aimed at a small patch of space near the Big Dipper. The new region is in the constellation Tucana, near the south celestial pole. Hubble's sharp vision allows astronomers to sort galaxy shapes. The image is dominated by beautiful pinwheel - shaped disk galaxies, which are like our Milky Way. The picture also contains a variety of peculiar - shaped galaxies that are in collision with companion galaxies. Elliptical galaxies appear as reddish blobs. A sprinkling of foreground stars (belonging to our Milky Way) appear as bright points with “” diffraction spikes”” an artifact of all telescope optics. The colors in the pictures are a natural representation of the galaxies' stellar populations. Blue corresponds to young hot stars. Red may indicate older stars, starlight scattered by dust, or very distant starlight that has been stretched to redder wavelengths by the university's expansion

A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. The dark spots in the picture are not photographic defects but an unusual type of interstellar cloud known as a Bok globule. Bok globules, named after astronomer Bart Bok who studied them extensively, are small dark clouds made of gas and dust that are typically condensing to form a star or stars. These Bok globules are located at a distance of about 6000 light years near IC 2944 cluster in the emission nebula IC 2948
Exoplanete Ross 128 b: Ross 128 b is an extrasolar planet probably of an Earth type, located only 11 light years from Earth in the constellation of the Virgin. Planet Ross 128 b, with its red dwarf parent star in the background. This planet, which lies only 11 light-years from Earth, was found by a team using Eso's unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life. Ross 128 b will be a prime target for Eso's Extremely Large Telescope, which will be able to search for biomarkers in the planet's atmosphere

Orion Nebula - M42 - M43 - The Great Nebula in Orion - Located 1500 years - light, the Orion Nebula is the closest region to the formation of stars of the Sun. Image obtained from the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope of the La Silla Observatory. The Orion Nebula is the greatest of all HII clouds visible from our location within the Milky Way. With a gaseous repository of 10,000 suns, and illuminated by a cluster of hot young stars, the clouds of M42 glow with fantastic colors and shapes, giving us a birds eye view of one of the greatest star forming nurseries in our part of the galaxy. At a distance of 1500 light years, the Orion nebula is the nearest star - forming region to the Sun. This new image of the Orion Nebula was captured using the Wide Field Imager camera on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory, Chile. This image is a composite of several exposures taken through a total of five different filters. Light that passed through a red filter, as well as light from a filter that shows the glowing hydrogen gas, is colored red. Light in the yellow - green part of the spectrum is colored green, blue light is colored blue and light that passed through an ultraviolet filter has been colored purple. The exposure times were about 52 minutes through each filter

Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Arp 274, also known as NGC 5679, is a system of three galaxies that appear to be partially overlapping in the image, although they may be at somewhat different distances. The spiral shapes of two of these galaxies appear mostly intact. The third galaxy (to the far left) is more compact, but shows evidence of star formation. Two of the three galaxies are forming new stars at a high rate. This is evident in the bright blue knots of star formation that are strung along the arms of the galaxy on the right and along the small galaxy on the left. The largest component is located in the middle of the three. It appears as a spiral galaxy, which may be barred. The entire system resides at about 400 million light - years away from Earth in the constellation Virgo. Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 was used to image Arp 274. Blue, visible, and infrared filters were combined with a filter that isolates hydrogen emission. The colors in this image reflect the intrinsic color of the different stellar populations that make up the galaxies. Yellowish older stars can be seen in the central bulge of each galaxy. A bright central cluster of stars pinpoint each nucleus. Younger blue stars trace the spiral arms, along with pinkish nebulae that are illuminated by new star formation. Field of distant galaxies - Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) - Distant galaxies - Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) - Image of distant galaxies obtained in infrared by the Hubble space telescope in the constellation of the Furnace. The farthest galaxies visible in this image are 13.2 billion light years away. Called the Extreme Deep Field, or XDF, the photo was assembled by combining 10 years of NASA Hubble Space Telescope photographs taken of a patch of sky at the center of the original Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The XDF is a small fraction of the angular diameter of the full Moon. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is an image of a small area of space in the constellation Fornax, created using Hubble Space Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. By collecting faint light over many hours of observation, it revealed thousands of galaxies, both nearby and very distant, making it the deepest image of the universe ever taken at that time. The new full - color XDF image reaches much fainter galaxies, and includes very deep exposures in red light from Hubble's new infrared camera, enabling new studies of the earliest galaxies in the universe. The XDF contains about 5,500 galaxies even within its smaller field of view. The faintest galaxies are one ten - billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see. The universe is 13.7 billion years old, and the XDF reveals galaxies that span back 13.2 billion years in time. Most of the galaxies in the XDF are seen when they were young, small, and growing, often violently as they collided and merged together. The early universe was a time of dramatic birth for galaxies containing brilliant blue stars extraordinarily brighter than our Sun. The light from those past events is just arriving at Earth now, and so the XDF is a “” time tunnel into the distant past.” The youngest galaxy found in the XDF existed just 450 million years after the university's birth in the big bangs
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 4394 in Berenice's Hair - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 4394 in Coma Berenices: NGC 4394 is a barree spiral galaxy located in the Virgin's cluster about 55 million light years from Earth. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) - Discovered in 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel, NGC 4394 is a barred spiral galaxy situated about 55 million light-years from Earth. The galaxy lies in the constellation of Coma Berenices (Berenice's Hair), and is considered to be a member of the Virgo Cluster. NGC 4394 is the archetypal barred spiral galaxy, with bright spiral arms emerging from the ends of a bar that cuts through the galaxy's central bulge. These arms are peppered with young blue stars, dark filaments of cosmic dust, and bright, fuzzy regions of active star formation. At the centre of NGC 4394 lies a region of ionised gas known as a LINER. Liners are active regions that display a characteristic set of emission lines in their spectra- mostly weakly ionised atoms of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. Although LINER galaxies are relatively common, it's still unclear where the energy comes from to ionise the gas. In most cases it is thought to be the influence of a black hole at the centre of the galaxy, but it could also be the result of a high level of star formation. In the case of NGC 4394, it is likely that gravitational interaction with a nearby neighbour has caused gas to flow into the galaxy's central region, providing a new reservoir of material to fuel the black hole or to make new stars

Taken in visible light, the image shows the tip of the three - light - year - long pillar, bathed in the glow of light from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of gas and dust can be seen flowing off the top of the structure. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the Carina Nebula on 24 - 30 July 2009. Star Formation in the dwarf galaxy NGC 1569 - Starburst galaxy NGC 1569 - NGC 1569 is a dwarf irregular galaxy in the constellation Giraffe. The Hubble space telescope measured its distance with precision, placing it 11 million years - light from Earth, or 4 million years - light beyond the distance previously established by astronomers. This new measure explains better why this galaxy has a particularly high star formation rate. It resides among a group of galaxies that by gravity compresses its gas, thus creating a hundred times more stars than in our own galaxy. NGC 1569 is located in the middle of a group of about 10 galaxies centered on the spiral galaxy IC 342. Gravitational interactions among the group's galaxies may be compressing gas in NGC 1569 and igniting the star - birthing frenzy. The galaxy is forming stars at a rate more than 100 times higher than the rate in the Milky Way. This high star - formation rate has been almost continuous for the past 100 million years. Thanks to Hubble space telescope, astronomers have now measured the galaxy's distance at nearly 11 million light - years away, about 4 million light - years farther than the old distance

Looking like a roiling cauldron of some exotic cosmic brew, huge clouds of gas and dust are sprinkled with bright blue, hot young stars. Strangely shaped dust clouds, resembling spilled liquids, are silhouetted against a colourful background of glowing. Like the familiar Orion Nebula, NGC 2467 is a huge cloud of gas - - mostly hydrogen - - that serves as an incubator for new stars. It is located about 17,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Puppis. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys through three different filters (F550M, F660N and F658N, shown in blue, green and red). These filters were selected to let through different colours of red and yellow light arising from different elements in the gas. The total aggregate exposure time was about 2000 seconds and the field of view is about 3.5 arcminutes across. These data were taken in 2004
