Nebulae B175 and VDB 152 in Cephee - Dark nebula B175 and reflection nebula VDB 152 - Located about 1400 years ago - light in the constellation Cephee, a large dust trail leads to a bluish nebula. This is the dark nebula, Barnard 175, which faces the nebula by reflexion VDB 152 (Ced 201). The reflection nebula vdB 152 is really very faint. It lies about 1400 light - years away, along the northern Milky Way in the constellation Cepheus. Near the edge of a large molecular cloud, pockets of cosmic dust in the region block light from background stars or scatter light from the embedded bright star (top) giving parts of the nebula a characteristic blue color. Ultraviolet light from the star is also thought to cause a dim reddish luminescence in the nebular dust. Although stars do form in molecular clouds, this star seems to have only accidentally wandered into the area, as its measured velocity through interstellar space is very different from the cloud's velocity

Barnard's catalog of dark nebulae and are given a “” B” designation, such as B72, the Snake Nebula. Almost the entire complex of dark nebulae seen on the right hand side of the image make up the “Dark Horse and Rider””. The Pipe Nebula, Lynds Dark Nebula 1773, comprises the hind quarter and back leg of the Dark Horse, which is seen vertically in this image. B63 is the front leg, B270 is the Horse's head, and B276 is the Rider's head. The area is also filled with star clouds, bright emission nebulae such as M8 - the Lagoon Nebula, M20 - the Trifid Nebula, and M17 - the Omega Nebula. The small Sagittarius star cloud, M24, is at the upper left, and the large Sagittarius star cloud at lower left. The center of our galaxy lies near the bottom edge of the image. Left of Gamma Cyg and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318's popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Above and left of Gamma Cyg, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cyg place it at around 750 light - years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light - years. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. Nebula N81 in the Small Magellan Cloud - Celestial Maternity Ward N81 in the Small Magellanic Cloud A NASA Hubble Space Telescope “” family portrait””” of young, ultra - bright stars nested in their embryonic cloud of glowing gases. The celestial maternity ward, called N81, is located 200,000 light - years away in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a small irregular satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. Hubble's exquisite resolution allows astronomers to pinpoint 50 separate stars tightly packed in the nebula's core within a 10 light - year diameter - slightly more than twice the distance between earth and the nearest star to our sun. The closest pair of stars is only 1/3 of a light - year apart (0.3 arcseconds in the sky). This furious rate of mass loss from these super - hot stars is evident in the Hubble picture that reveals dramatic shapes sculpted in the nebula's wall of glowing gases by violent stellar winds and shock waves. A pair of bright stars in the center of the nebula is pouring out most of the ultraviolet radiation to make the nebula glow. Just above them, a small dark knot is all that's left of the cold cloud of molecular hydrogen and dust the stars were born from. Dark absorption lanes of residual dust trisect the nebula. The nebula offers a unique opportunity for a close - up glimpse at the “” firestorm”” accompanying the birth of extremely massive stars, each blazing with the brilliance of 300,000 of our suns. Such galactic fireworks were much more common billions of years ago in the early universe, when most star formation took place. The “” natural - color” view was assembled from separate images taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, in ultraviolet light and two narrow emission lines of ionized Hydrogen (H - alpha, H - beta).
