Lunar base - Illustration - Lunar base - Illustration - In the middle of the 21st century, an international base is permanently occupied on the Moon
The First Trees on Earth - Artist View - First Trees - Artist view - 385 million years ago, in the upper Devonian, the first trees began to appear on Earth. In this illustration, the archaeopteris, considered the first tree, is present at different stages of its evolution, with on the left a young specimen of 6 metres, in the centre a tree twice as large, on the right, an even older specimen. At the extreme right, a strain of an old Archaeopteris collapse. 385 million years ago, near the end of the Devonian period, the first trees began to populate the Earth. Considered the first modern trees, the Archaeopteris were a part of the Earth's primitive forests for the next 25 million years. Unlike the trees we know today, Archaeopteris was in fact a primitive fern that reproduced by means of spores instead of seeds. While terrestrial plants had been around for 130 million years prior to Archaeopteris, this was the first plant to solve the biomechanical challenges of supporting and nurturing ever larger sizes, enabling these Archaeopteris to grow to heights of 70 feet and more, over twice the height of the Calamites. In this image, four stages of the life of the Archaeopteris are illustrated. On the far left nearest our vantage point is a young, 20 - foot Archaeopteris, and in the center at twice that height is a medium - aged Archaeopteris, and on the right is a fully mature specimen. Furthest right is the collapsed and decaying trunk of a mature tree, a contribution the biomassy that will eventually become the oil, coal and natural gas we exploit today
Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidons - Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidons - View of an Acrocanthosaurus (Acrocanthosaurus atokensis) with a group of Sauroposeidons (Sauroposeidon proteles) in the distance. On the left, a coniferous drill (Frenelopsis ramosissima). The huge carnivorous dinosaur Acrocanthosaurus atokensis emerges from a stand of conifers (Frenelopsis ramosissima) onto a wide flood plain near the eastern coast of the Western Interior Seaway (an extension of the Atlantic that ran through the middle of North America in the Cretaceous period) to stalk a trio of Oklahoma's gigantic sauropods (Sauropods) On proteles). Acrocanthosaurus atokensis was recently declared the state dinosaur of Oklahoma

Najd Plateau - Saudi Arabia - Najd plateau - Saudi Arabia - Image obtained by Envisat satellite centree on the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. The circular shapes visible at the top and left center of the image are irrigated fields. This Envisat image is centred over the plateau region of Najd located in Saudi Arabia, bounded on the west by the Al Hijaz mountains and on all other sides by desert sands. A curious feature about this image are the irrigated fields shown as grey and black circular patterns at the top and centre left of the image. Image taken on July 13 2003

The capture of the Moon - Moon capture theory - Infographic showing the different processes of capturing a satellite by a planet. At the top, the developing planetary halo of gas slows down and captures a passing Celestial body. In the middle, the sphere of gravitational influence of the planet develops and attracts a celestial body. At the bottom, interactions between passing asteroids can cause one to remain in orbit around a planet. Infographic shows processes for planet to aquire a satellite. A developing planet's halo of gas expands to capture a passing body (top). Its gravitational sphere of influence expands as well (middle). Interactions between passing asteroids may cause one to fall into orbit (bottom)

Suchomimus - Suchomimus (crocodile mime) was a large carnivorous dinosaur with a jaw similar to that of a crocodile, living in the middle of the cretace 110 to 120 million years ago. 12 feet tall and weighing five tons, a carnivorous Suchomimus wanders a beach on the ancient Tethys Ocean 115 million ago in search of her next meal. A ferocious predator nearly as big as T-Rex with a crocodile-like head, Suchomimus (“crocodile mimic”) may have lived largely on fish and carrion in what today is Northern Africa
Lakes of Nayriz, Iran, seen by satellite - Neyriz Lakes, Iran - In southern Iran's Fars province, the lakes of Bakhtegan and Tashk, better known as lakes of Nayriz “” appear on this image taken by ALOS, a four-ton Japanese observation satellite. Lake Bakhtegan (central) and Lake Tashk (upper), located in the Nayriz basin, are dirty lakes in the south-east of the Zagros Mountains, whose water levels fluctuate with rain and snow in the mountains. Lake Bakhtegan, the second largest lake in Iran, is fed mainly by the Kour River, while Lake Tashk receives the overflow from the marecages at its western extremite and from an important permanent north-west source. Although normally separated by narrow strips of land, during the years of heavy rain they can join and form only one lake. Similarly, after several years of low rains, as in 1934 and 1971, the lakes can be completely low except for the points closest to the springs. The two lakes, their delta and the morecages associated with the springs have been recognized as “wetlands of international importance”. The Bakhtegan National Park, a natural park, sanctuary and reserve, is visible in the center and top of the picture above Lake Bakhtegan. The ALOS satellite (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) took this image on 6 March 2009 with the AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type - 2) instrument, which is designed to map emergeal land and vegetation cover in visible and near-infrared spectral bands with a resolution of 10 m. Lakes Bakhtegan (centre) and Tashk (top), together known as the Neyriz Lakes, in the Fars Province in southern Iran are featured in this image acquired by ALOS, Japan's four - tonne Earth observation satellite, on 6 March 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrare

Eurohippus and horse compared - Eurohippus is a prehistoric mammal, ancestor of the horse, living from the middle to the end of the eocene. He is represented here compared to a modern horse. Mature Eurohippus 42 million years ago are compared to a modern adult horse (Equus ferus caballus). Eurohippus is only about 20 inches long and weighs just a few pounds*, while the modern horse is 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 1,000 pounds.* Values are estimates only based upon available paleontological data
Mount Everest seen from space - Mount Everest seen from space - Part of the Himalayan chain with Mount Everest (in the center), on the border between China and Nepal, observed by the shuttle Endeavour in February 2000. Mt. Everest (29,028 ft/8848 m; center of photo), also called Qomolangma Feng, is just north of the border between Nepal and China. The Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau are products of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. With the continuing northward march of India, the crust of the Earth has become thicker and the Tibetan Plateau has been uplifted to an average elevation of about 15,000 feet. Image taken by astronauts in the space shuttle Endeavour in february 2000
Aral Sea view from 1973 to 2000 - Aral sea 1973 to 2000 - Northern part of the Aral Sea observed by Landsat satellites from 1973 to 2000. In 30 years, 60% of this lake has disappeared. Left, May 29, 1973, middle, August 19, 1987, right, July 29, 2000. The Aral Sea is actually not a sea at all. It is an immense lake, a body of fresh water. In the last 30 years, more than 60 percent of the lake has disappeared. The sequence of images, acquired by Landsat satellites, shows the dramatic changes to the Aral Sea between 1973 and 2000. Left is an image taken on May 29 1973, middle is an image taken on August 19 1987, right is an image taken on July 29 2000
Shore from the sea of Niobrara to the cretace - Enchodus estuary - Artist's view presenting a landscape of North America 75 million years ago. At that time the sea of Niobrara cut the North American continent in half. Underwater are represented by Enchodus, predators nearly two metres long. On the shore, on the right, are Hadrosaurides (duck-beaked dinosaurs); on the left, Struthiomimus (ostrich-like dinosaur). In the centre, Ichthyornis take off. Fanged Enchodus, six-foot-long predatory fish from the late Cretaceous period about 75 million years ago, swim in a estuary in the Western Interior Seaway of North America. On the shore to the right are duck-billed Hadrosaurs and on the left are a pair of ostrich-like Struthiomimus. In the center a flock of feathered Ichthyornis take to the air. During the mid to late Cretaceous the continent of North America was divided by waters from the Arctic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Also known as the Cretaceous Seaway, the Niobraran Sea, and the North American Inland Sea, much of the North American Midwest was under water for about 30 million years. ♪ In some places the water may have been as deep as 3,000 feet ♪
Suchomimus - Suchomimus tenerensis fishing - A Suchomimus catches a shark on the edge of the ancient Tethys Ocean in today's North Africa. Suchomimus tenerensis (crocodile mime) was a large carnivorous dinosaur with a jaw similar to that of a crocodile, which lived in the middle of the cretace 110 to 120 million years ago. A five ton, Early Cretaceous Suchomimus snags a shark from a lush estuary near the ancient Tethys Ocean in what today is Northern Africa. Suchomimus was well-armed with long claws and a long, crocodile-like snout with dozens of teeth. Given these distinctly crocodilian features, it's believed that this dinosaur, like modern day crocodiles, dined largely on fish
Doliosauriscus - Doliosauriscus was a fossil carnivorous reptile of the order of Therapsides and the suborder of Dinocephales. He lived in the middle of Permian about 265 million years ago. In the picture, in the background, a dimetrodon. 12-foot-long dinocephalian therapsids of the genus Doliosauriscus face off in a dry mid-permian landscape 265 million years ago in what is today Russia. On the horizon is a synapsid of the genus Dimetrodon. Vegetation includes various ferns and cycads. Similar to its better-known relative Titanophoneus, Doliosauriscus was a carnivore, one of the largest predators of its time with large dagger-like canines in front and sharp incisors and flat molars in back for grinding up flesh

Eurohippus - Eurohippus is a prehistoric mammal, ancestor of the horse, living from the middle to the end of the eocene. He is represented here in a forest 42 million years ago in what is today France. Equid ungulates of the genus Eurohippus huddle in a forest 42 million years ago in what is today France. An ancient ancestor to modern horses, donkeys, and zebras, Eurohippus was about the size of a small dog and possessed three toes instead of a single hoof. While modern equines are adapted to the varying and sometimes harsh climates of grasslands, Eurohippus lived and foraged in the relative comfort of warm and moist forests
Carboniferous fire - Carboniferous firestorm - Fire in a forest of ferns, sigillaria (sigillaria), calamites, cordaites and asterophyllites. In the foreground giant invertebrae try to take refuge in water. Fire rages through a prehistoric forest of towering Sigillaria and Cordaites, Asterophyllites, Calamites, and ferns. In the foreground a potpourri of giant Carboniferous invertebrates flee the conflagration, heading for the only real estate not subject to burning: water. On the left is a giant, 3 foot centipede; in the center is a giant Arthropleura, the largest known arthropod ever to walk the earth; on the right is a two - foot - long scorpion, and in between are dozens of prehistoric “” roachoids,””” some taking briefly to the searing air. On the far left submerged in the relative comfort of the water is a Dendrerpeton awaiting the prospect of an easy meal. 300 million years ago the Earth's atmosphere may have held considerably more oxygen than today; the air may have been as much as 35% oxygen (the air we breathe now is 21% oxygen). Such high oxygen levels may help to explain why so many terrestrial invertebrates - - insects, arachnids and some crustaceans - - grew to such enormous sizes. These invertebrates “” breathe”” by adsorbing oxygen directly through their skin. Another consequence of such an oxygen - rich environment would be an increased propensity for organic matter to combust. Forest fires sparked by lightning or volcanic activity must have burned with a special ferocity

Mount Everest seen from space - Himalaya Mountains, Nepal March 1996 - Part of the Himalayan chain with Mount Everest (below the center, on the left), observed by the shuttle Atlantis in March 1996. At the top of the picture, the foggy plains of northern India, at the bottom the Tibetan plateau. The Himalaya Mountains provide a formidable physical barrier between the hazy environmental conditions of north central India (top) and Nepal (middle), and the clear atmosphere of the Tibetan Plateau (lower third of image). Elevation disparities in this region of the world are tremendous. For example the elevations on the Gangetic Plain in India averages about 300 feet (92 meters) above sea level, the foothills (dark - looking features that run laterally across the image) in Nepal average about 2500 feet (762 meters), and finally the snow capped Himalayas average around 24000 feet (7315 meters). Mt. Everest, highest mountain peak in the world at 29028 feet (8848 meters), is visible as an identifiable bright feature (slightly below and left of center). Several east - west aligned fault valleys (result of tectonic forces - collision of plate boundaries) are visible on the sparsely vegetated Tibetan Plateau (China) where the average valley elevation is 15000 feet (4572 meters) above sea level. A small section of the easterly draining Brahmaputra River can be discerned near the lower right corner of the image
Italy at Night - Italy at Night - Italy at Night from the International Space Station (ISS) on August 18, 2012. This oblique, nighttime panorama of much of Europe was photographed by one of the Expedition 32 crew members aboard the International Space Station flying approximately 240 miles above the Mediterranean Sea on Aug. 18, 2012. The country of Italy is visible running diagonally southward from the horizon across the center of the frame, with the night lights of Rome and Naples being visible on the coast near the center. Sardinia and Corsica are just above left center of the photo, and Sicily is at lower left. The Adriatic Sea is on the other side of Italy, and beyond it to the east and north can be seen parts of several other European nations

Tyrannosaurus rex and Purgatorius - A seven-ton Tyrannosaurus in a cretacious forest 68 million years ago. A Purgatorius is watching his way. Purgatorius is the name of a genus of four fossil species considered to be the oldest representatives of primates (proto-primates). A 40 foot long, seven ton coelurosaurian theropod dinosaur of the species Tyrannosaurus rex wanders among oak trees and ground ferns 68 million years ago on a Cretaceous island continent known as Laramidia in what is today the western United States. This example of Tyrannosaurus rex hosts fur-like downy feathers on its head, back and along the top of its tail. While it's not known whether Tyrannosaurus rex was feathered, other tyrannosaur fossils have shown tantalizing evidence of them.On the lower left is a rodent-size proto-primate of the genus Purgatorius, and in the lower middle is an amphibious tetrapod of the family Salamandridae
Galapagos Islands - The Galapagos Islands seen from the space shuttle - Volcanoes of Galapagos Islands seen by the shuttle Endeavour in December 2001. In the center the island of Isabela, in the top left the island of Fernanda. Lava flows appear as dark stringy patches leading down the flanks of volcanoes which comprise the large, seahorse - shaped island of Isabela. Other flows appear on the flanks of Fernandina Island, the smaller round island to the left, which is made up of a single large volcanic cone. The Galapagos Islands lie above a hot spot underneath the oceanic plate that has been active at least for tens of millions of years. December 200

Left, June 4, 1977, middle, September 17, 1989, right, May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea on June 4, 1977, Sept. 17, 1989, and May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea lies between Uzbekistan (to the south) and Kazakhstan (to the north). Once the fourth largest lake in the world, the Aral Sea is now less than half of its original size. The Aral Sea is a terminal, or endorheic, sea (meaning no water flows out of it). It is fed by the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya Rivers, but Soviet river diversions for irrigation made over 40 years ago have starved the Aral Sea of water. In 2001, the World Bank funded the construction of an 8 - mile dam to separate the North and South Aral, and thus save the smaller and less polluted North Aral Sea. The North Aral has been growing since completion of the Kok - Aral Dam in the summer of 2005. Repairs and updates to the inefficient Soviet - era canals have also played a role in the rejuvenation of the North Aral

Impact Crater Wolf Creek, Australia - Area around Wolf Creek impact crater, Australia - Part of the Great Sable Desert with Wolf Creek impact crater (or Wolfe Creek, top left) in Australia, seen by Terra satellite on September 22, 2006. It would have been formed about 300,000 years ago and its diameter is 880 metres. Wolfe Creek Crater lies on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert approximately 90 km south of Halls Creek in Western Australia. Almost circular, Wolfe Creek Crater (also known as Wolf Creek Crater, top middle left) is considered the second largest crater in the world from which meteorite fragments have been collected. Because of its excellent preservation, the crater clearly shows the classic features that result from a large meteorite striking the Earth. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on Nasa's Terra satellite captured this image of Wolfe Creek Crater on September 22, 2006. The Australian Outback appears mostly in varying earth tones in this simulated - true - color image. Deep green indicates vegetation lining the winding stream west of the crater. A road leads to the crater's rim, approaching from the south, then turning east. The crater itself appears fairly dark brown, but a bright white splotch occupies the crater's center. Wolfe Creek Crater measures roughly 880 meters (2,890 feet) in diameter, and the mostly flat crater floor sits some 55 meters (180 feet) below the crater rim and some 25 meters (82 feet) below the sand plain outside of the crater. At the crater's center, the ground rises slightly, and includes gypsum - - probably responsible for the bright white spot in this image - - and some surprisingly large trees. Geologists studying the crater have estimated that it formed some 300,000 years ago when a meteorite weighing more than 50,000 metric tons struck the Earth at an estimated 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) per second
Ol Doinyo Lengai - Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai - Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the Great Rift Valley. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world to emit carbonatite. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 12 September 2009. Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the great rift valley. It is the only known volcano producing carbonatite. The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is extremely cool (500 - 600* C, compared to 1,160* C for typical basaltic lava) and relatively fluid. Ol Doinyo Lengai alternates between eruptions of liquid lava that form lava lakes and fountains (called effusive eruptions) and explosive eruptions that build large cinder and ash cones. The new cone and crater are clearly visible in the center of the image acquired by satellite EO-1 on September 12, 2009. The dark spot in the crater may be fresh lava erupted from a new volcanic vent. Gray ash covers the volcano and much of the surrounding landscape

Aral Sea seen in June 2003 - Aral sea in june 2003 - The Aral Sea observed by the ENVISAT satellite on June 17, 2003. The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world; it began shrinking in the 1960s when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) diverted the Amu Darya (southern feed of the lake) and Syr Darya (north western feed) rivers to irrigate the cotton crops of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with the result that the water level has dropped by 13 metres and the salinity of the water has tripled in the past two decades. Fish populations have died off, and wind - blown sand and salts threaten the entire region with the advancement of the Qyzylqum Desert (centre right of the image). Today the inland sea covers about half of its former area and its water volume have decreased by about 75 per cent

Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere seen at sunset from the International Space Station (ISS) on May 25, 2010. This spectacular image of sunset on the Indian Ocean was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The image presents an edge - on, or limb view, of the Earth's atmosphere as seen from orbit. The Earth's curvature is visible along the horizon line, or limb, that extends across the image from center left to lower right. Above the darkened surface of the Earth, a brilliant sequence of colors roughly denotes several layers of the atmosphere. Deep oranges and yellows appear in the troposphere, which extends from the Earth's surface to 6 - 20 km high. This layer contains over 80 percent of the mass of the atmosphere and almost all of the water vapor, clouds, and precipitation. Several dark cloud layers are visible within this layer. Variations in the colors are due mainly to varying concentrations of either clouds or aerosols (airborne particles or droplets). The pink to white region above the clouds appears to be the stratosphere; this atmospheric layer generally has little or no clouds and extends up to approximately 50 km above the Earth's surface. Above the stratosphere, blue layers mark the upper atmosphere (including the mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, and exosphere) as it gradually fades into the blackness of outer space. The ISS was located over the southern Indian Ocean when this picture was taken, with the astronaut observer looking towards the west. Astronauts aboard the ISS see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity (greater than 28,000 km per hour). The multiple chances for photography are fortunate, as at that speed each sunrise or sunset event only lasts a few seconds. This astronaut photograph was acquired on May 25, 2010

La terre vue de nuit - 1992 a 2008 - Lights on Earth's surface - 1992 to 2008 - Earth observed at night by satellite. Composite image obtained by DMSP satellites from 1992 to 2008. The color code corresponds to 1992 (blue), 2000 (green) and 2008 (red). In white, the areas lit during these three years. Composite map of the world assembled from data acquired by satellites. This is a color composite of three years - 1992, 2000, 2008 - of DMSP nighttime lights. Each year has been assigned to one of the primary colors: 1992 = blue, 2000 = green, 2008 = red. The contrast has been enhanced to show all the detected lights, including the dim lighting often detected in populated rural areas. Locations that had bright lighting in all three years are white. There are many rural areas in India and elsewhere that have a bronze color, indicating that they had no detected lighting in 1992 and dim lighting detected in both 2000 and 2008. Notice the areas of blue lighting in several parts of the Former Soviet Union, the result of collapse and loss of lighting in the mid - 1990's
