Mars Express probe - Artist's View - Mars Express artist's view - The European probe Mars Express leaves the Earth propelled by the upper floor Fregat. This probe was launched on 2 June 2003 and began its observations in early 2004. Mars Express left Earth for Mars on 2 June 2003 when the positions of the two planets made for the shortest possible route, a condition that occurs once every twenty - six months. The european spaceprobe began its March observations in 2004. Mars Express was mounted on the Fregat upper stage. Most of the energy needed to propel Mars Express from Earth to Mars is provided by the four - stage Soyuz/Fregat launcher. The Fregat upper stage separated from the spacecraft after placed it on a Mars - bound trajectory

Mars - Satellite Phobos - Martian moon Phobos - View of the satellite Phobos obtained by the Mars Express probe on July 23, 2008 at a distance of 97 km from the Martian moon. The resolution is 3.7 meters per pixel. On 23 July 2008, the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board the ESA's Mars Express took the highest - resolution full - disc image yet of the surface of the moon Phobos. The image data was acquired from a distance of 97 km with a spatial resolution of about 3.7 m/pixel in orbit 5851. These images have surpassed all previous images from other missions in continuous coverage of the illuminated surface at the highest spatial resolution of 3.7 m/pixel. This image is photometrically enhanced to bring out the features in the less illuminated part
March -View of the south pole - Mars South Pole: Image of the southern polar cap of Mars obtained by the Mars Express probe on December 17, 2012. The bright white region of this image shows the icy cap that covers Mars' south pole, composed of frozen water and carbon dioxide. The southern cap reaches some 3 km thick in places, and is around 350 km in diameter. This icy region is permanent; in the martian winter another, thinner ice cap forms over the top of it, stretching further out across the planet and disappearing again when the weather warms up. Mars Express imaged this area of March on 17 December 2012, in infrared, green and blue light, using its High Resolution Stereo Camera.

Mars: craters and channels in Hephaestus Fossae - Mars: craters and channels in Hephaestus Fossae - Impact crateres and channel system in Hephaestus Fossae, a region on Mars located on the western flank of Elysium Mons. Close-up of a large impact crater measuring 20 km in diameter. The image was obtained by the Mars Express probe on December 28, 2007. This image of Hephaestus Fossae was obtained by Esa's Mars Express orbiter on 28 December 2007. The region is dotted with craters and channel systems and lies at about 21* North and 126* East on the Red Planet. Named after the Greek god of fire, Hephaestus Fossae extends for more than 600 km on the western flank of Elysium Mons in the Utopia Planitia region. The image shows a large impact crater measuring 20 km in diameter. It shows a blanket of ejecta with flow forms surrounding the rim
Mars - View of the south pole - Mars South pole - Image of part of the southern polar cap of Mars obtained by the Mars Express probe on December 17, 2012. The bright white region of this image shows the icy cap that covers Mars' south pole, composed of frozen water and carbon dioxide. While it looks smooth in this image, at close quarters the cap is a layered mix of peaks, troughs and flat plains, and has been likened in appearance to swiss cheese. The southern cap reaches some 3 km thick in places, and is around 350 km in diameter. This icy region is permanent; in the martian winter another, thinner ice cap forms over the top of it, stretching further out across the planet and disappearing again when the weather warms up. The cap is around 150 km north of Mars' geographical south pole and Mars Express has shed light on why this ice cap is displaced. Deep impact craters - notably the Hellas Basin, the largest impact structure on the entire planet at 7 km deep and 2300 km across - funnel the strong winds that blow across Mars towards its southern pole, creating a mix of different low - and high - pressure systems. The carbon dioxide in the polar cap sublimates at different rates in these regions with contrasting pressure, resulting in the cap's lopsided structure. Mars Express imaged this area of March on 17 December 2012, in infrared, green and blue light, using its High Resolution Stereo Camera

March: Hebes Chasma - Hebes Chasma is a basin of almost 8000 m deep located in the northern part of Valles Marineris, the great Martian canyon. At the centre of this depression is a stratified plateau that constitutes sedimentary deposits. Perspective image obtained by the Mars Express probe in 2005. Perspective view of Hebes Chasma obtained by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on ESA's Mars Express spacecraft. Hebes Chasma is an enclosed trough, almost 8000 m deep, in Valles Marineris, the Grand Canyon of Mars, where water is believed to have flowed. Hebes Chasma is located at approximately 1* south and 282* east. The HRSC obtained image data on 16 September 2005 with a ground resolution of approximately 15 m/pixel
Mars: Valles Marineris - Mosaic of 20 images obtained by the European probe Mars Express. This image shows the eastern part of Valles Marineris, a canyon about 4500 km long and 8 km deep. This mosaic image of eastern part of Valles Marineris - colored to resemble the martian surface - comes from Esa's Mars Express spacecraft, which repeatedly crosses the Martian equator from north to south or south to north. The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board Mars Express, has been taking image strips of the valley system since 2004 as it passes overhead. The individual HRSC image strips are each between 50 and 200 kilometers wide, depending on Mars Express' orbit, so this view of Valles Marineris has only been made possible by creating a mosaic using 20 separate images. To improve the presentation here, the altitudes have been exaggerated fourfold, so that the slopes and mountainsides appear steeper than they are in reality. The colours in this image are slightly false as well. By increasing the contrast between the individual colour channels, many features of the terrain in this geologically extremely complex region that were not readily apparent can be made much more visible, as can differences in the surface composition
Mars - View of the north pole - Mars north pole - Image of a portion of the northern polar cap of Mars obtained by the Mars Express probe on May 17, 2010. This image was acquired by the Mars Express High - Resolution Stereo Camera on 17 May 2010 and shows a part of the northern polar region of Mars at the northern hemisphere summer solstice. The polar ice deposits follow the seasonal cycles. Studies made by Mars Express's OMEGA instrument shows that the cap is covered by frozen water and carbon dioxide ice in winter and spring but by this point in the martian year all of the carbon dioxide ice has warmed and evaporated into the planet's atmosphere. Only water ice is left behind, which shows up as bright white areas in this picture. From these layers, large bursts of water vapour are occasionally released into the atmosphere. In winter, part of the atmosphere recondenses as frost and snow on the northern cap. These seasonal deposits can extend as far south as 45* N latitude and be up to a metre thick. Another phenomenon occurs on the curved scarps of the northern polar cap, such as the Rupes Tenuis slope (on the left of this image). During spring, the seasonal carbon dioxide layer is covered by water frost. At certain times, winds remove the millimetre - thick top layer of frozen water, revealing the carbon dioxide ice below. These processes bear witness to a dynamic water cycle on Mars and may lead to the varying accumulation of water ice over the polar cap

Mars - Volcanoes Ceraunius Tholus and Uranius Tholus - Mosaic of images obtained by the Mars Express probe between November 25, 2004 and June 22, 2006 during three different orbits. This image shows the volcanoes Ceraunius Tholus (left) and Uranius Tholus (right). These volcanoes measure 130 and 62 km respectively, and s'elevent is 5500m and 4500m. In the second orbit, a cloud was present near the summit of Ceraunius Tholus volcano; in the final mosaic it appears cut in a straight line because the cloud had disappeared in the last image. Ceraunius Tholus and Uranius Tholus are two volcanoes in the Tharsis region of Mars. Ceraunius Tholus is 130 km across and rises 5.5 km above its surroundings. The flanks of this volcano are etched with many valleys. Its neighbour, Uranius Tholus is a smaller volcano, with a base diameter of 62 km and a height of 4.5 km. This image is derived from data acquired during three separate orbits of Mars Express, which took place between 25 November 2004 and 22 June 2006. During the second orbit, Mars Express's camera captured icy clouds drifting past the summit of Ceraunius Tholus. In the finished mosaic image there is a sharp line because the clouds had long since dispersed by the time Mars Express crossed again and took the final strip of data needed for the image
March: Chaotic terrain between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae - Mars: Chaotic terrain between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae - Region bordering Kasei Valles (top) and Sacra Fossae (bottom). Kasei Valles is one of the largest Martian canal systems. The large impact crater on the right is 35 km in diameter. The image covering an area of 225 km by 95 km was obtained by the Mars Express probe. Mars Express flew over the boundary between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae and imaged the region, acquiring spectacular views of the chaotic terrain in the area. The images are centred at 12* N/285* E and have a ground resolution of about 21 m/pixel. They cover 225 x 95 km or 21.375 sq km, an area roughly half the size of the Netherlands. The upper portion of the image swath shows the eastern margin of Kasei Valles and the western margin of the Lunae Planum plateau and the adjoining Sacra Fossae. Kasei Valles is one of the largest outflow channels on Mars, spanning 3000 km, from the Chryse Planitia basin in the north to Etus Chasma to the south. The impact crater at right is 35 km diameter

The image shows an old 35 km - diameter impact crater in the north. The crater's southwestern rim is eroded strongly, mostly by flowing water. The source of the water was located in Echo Chasma, which lies about 850 km to the southwest
Mars: dunes and ice in Chasma Boreale - Mars: dunes and ice in Chasma Boreale - Chasma Boreale is a huge canyon located in the northern polar cap of Mars. This image, obtained by the Mars Express probe, shows Tenuis Cavus, the end of this canyon, where layers of water ice mix with Mars dust. At the bottom of the bowl there are numerous sand dunes. Chasma Boreale is a huge canyon in the northern polar cap. The images taken by Mars Express spacecraft show sharp detail of a series of scarps at the head of Chasma Boreale, a giant trough that almost divides the north polar ice cap in two. The trough is about 318 kilometers long and has cliffs that are almost two kilometers high. The images show layers of water ice and dust possibly for the first time in perspective view. Chasma Boreale is cut into the layered material that lies beneath the water ice of the polar cap. For decades, these layered materials were assumed to consist of a mixture of ice and dust. Recent observations could mean that some of the layers are a source for windblown sand. The floor of the trough and the caldera - like structures are covered by dark sand dunes. This dark material could be volcanic ash or it is possible that it is dark sand eroding out of the polar layered materials. These pictures were taken in mid - summer, a time when the dark sand dunes on the trough floor were still partially covered by a white frost left over from the winter season. The frost is most definitely frozen water, rather than carbon dioxide, because the temperatures even in spring are too high for solid carbon dioxide to be present. This frost is not likely to defrost much beyond this extent. The shapes of the dunes indicate transport in a direction parallel to the chasma incision. The main wind direction is not clear at present but likely to be north - east to south - west, parallel to the chasma walls
March: Iani Chaos - Mars: Iani Chaos - The region of Iani Chaos on Mars. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe. Iani Chaos on Mars, an area where Light Toned Deposits, or LTD, are known to be present. An analysis of data and images from Mars Express suggests that several LTD, some of the least understood structures on Mars, were formed when large amounts of groundwater burst on to the surface. Scientists propose that groundwater had a greater role in shaping the martian surface than previously believed, and may have sheltered primitive life forms as the planet started drying up. This image was obtained with the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft
Mars: craters and channels in Hephaestus Fossae - Mars: craters and channels in Hephaestus Fossae - Impact crateres and channel system in Hephaestus Fossae, a region on Mars located on the western flank of Elysium Mons. The large impact crater at the top of the picture is 20 km in diameter. The image covering an area of about 150 square km was obtained by the Mars Express probe on 28 December 2007. The surface is mostly smooth, and is covered by several small impact craters measuring 800 to 2800 m in diameter. Smaller craters are scattered across the entire region. A larger impact crater measuring 20 km in diameter is a prominent feature. Covering an area of approximately 150 sq km, this crater could harbour cities such as Bonn or Kiel. In contrast to the smaller craters, it shows a blanket of ejecta with flow forms surrounding the rim. The large craters were formed when loose, soft material was ejected due to impact, and the smaller ones formed due to secondary impacts, when consolidated material was ejected in a ballistic path and impacted the original crater at varying distances. Most martian water exists in the form of subsurface ice. The presence of a blanket of ejecta and outflow channels around the crater suggest that the primary impact may have penetrated the surface enough to melt a buried frozen water reservoir
Glaciers under Martian crateres - Buried glaciers on Mars - Computer reconstructed views of three Martian crateres in the Hellas region that house glaciers. The images show the crateres as they appear today with a layer of Martian soil covering the ice with water and, on the right, the glaciers updated according to radar measurements obtained by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe (MRO). These glaciers would have a thickness of 250 to 450 meters. Each image covers 20 km wide. This computer graphic image shows three craters in the eastern Hellas region of Mars containing concealed glaciers detected by radar. The images shows how the surface looks today with the ice covered with a layer of Martian soil and what the ice may look like underneath. The image was created using image data from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft combined with results from the SHARAD radar sounder on MRO and HRSC digital elevation map from the Mars Express spacecraft. The color of the Martian surface and ice was estimated from MRO HiRise color images of other Martian craters and the polar ice caps. The buried ice in these craters as measured by SHARAD is ~ 250 meter thick on the upper crater and ~ 300 and 450 meters on the middle and lower levels respectively. Each image is 20 km (12.8 mi.) across and extends to 50 km (32 mi) in the distance. Recent measurements from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter SHARAD radar sounder have detected large amounts of water ice in such deposits over widespread areas, arguing for the flow of glacial - like structures on Mars in the relatively recent geologic past. This suggests that snow and ice accumulated on higher topography, flowed downhill and is now protected from sublimation by a layer of rock debris and dust. Furrows and ridges on the surface were caused by deforming ice
March: chaotic terrain between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae - Mars: Chaotic terrain between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae - Region bordering Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae. To the north, the large impact crater is 35 km in diameter. The image covering an area of 225 km by 95 km was obtained by the Mars Express probe. Mars Express flew over the boundary between Kasei Valles and Sacra Fossae and imaged the region, acquiring spectacular views of the chaotic terrain in the area. The image shows an old 35 km - diameter impact crater in the north. The crater's southwestern rim is eroded strongly, mostly by flowing water. The source of the water was located in Etus Chasma, which lies about 850 km to the southwest. The crater floor and the northwestern part are remarkably flat, formed by sediments and basaltic lava flows from the Tharsis volcanic region

The High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express has returned images of Etus Chasma, one of the largest water source regions on the Red Planet. Echus Chasma is an approximately 100 km long and 10 km wide incision in the Lunae Planum high plateau north of Valles Marineris, the 'Grand Canyon' of Mars. Etus Chasma is the water source region of Kasei Valles, which extends thousands of kilometres to the north, and its southern - most part. The data was acquired on 25 September 2005. The pictures are centred at about 1* north and 278* east and have a ground resolution of approximately 17 m/pixel

View of Hebes Chasma obtained by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on ESA's Mars Express spacecraft. Hebes Chasma is an enclosed trough, almost 8000 m deep, in Valles Marineris, the Grand Canyon of Mars. A mesa - like mountain is located in the center of Hebes Chasma. It reaches 8000 meters above the graben floor and extends almost to the top of the surrounding plain. The mountain is made up by numerous stacked rock layers. The layering may consists of remnants of the older plateau, lake sediments, wind blown sediments or volcanic rock. The rock layers were exposed by erosional processes. Newest data acquired by the OMEGA spectrometer on - board Mars Express revealed hydratized (water - bearing) minerals like gypsum in some areas of Hebes Chasma. What ever kind of processes led to the formation of the Interior Layered Deposits: at least some water once existed in Hebes Chasma. Hebes Chasma is located at approximately 1* south and 282* east. The HRSC obtained image data on 16 September 2005 with a ground resolution of approximately 15 m/pixel
Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Perspective view of Noctis Labyrinthus, located in the western part of the great Martian canyon Valles Marineris. This heavily eroded canyon is here 5000 meters deep. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe on June 25, 2006. On 25 June 2006 the High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data with a ground resolution of approximately 16 meters per pixel. The data were acquired in the region of Noctis Labyrinthus at approximately 6.5* southern latitude and 260* eastern longitude. The region Noctis Labyrinthus, the Labyrinth of the Night”” is located directly on the western edge of Valles Marineris, the “Grand Canyon of Mars””. It is part of the complex graben system which is associated with the up - arching of Tharsis. Eye - catching is the high density of deeply incised, smaller, maze - like fractures. The scene exhibits parts of those graben structures which are incised up to 5000 meters. They are strongly eroded as can be seen at the bottom of the graben which exhibits detritus. Younger lithologies can be seen on the upper edge of the graben. The fractures are witnesses of so - called extensional tectonics. The intense volcanism in the Tharsis region was associated with an intense up - arching of large areas. This process resulted in tectonic stress, causing the crust to thin out and lead to graben formation.

March: impact crater Maunder - Mars: Maunder crater - Perspective view of an impact crater located between Argyre Planitia and Hellas Planitia. The Maunder crater is 90 km in diameter and 900 m deep. The dark areas at the bottom of the crater are dunes. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe in 2005. On 29 November and 14 December 2005 the High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data with a ground resolution of approximately 15 meters per pixel. The data were acquired in the region of Noachis Terra at approximately 50* southern latitude and 2* eastern longitude. The Maunder Crater, located halfway between Argyre Planitia and Hellas Planitia on the southern Highlands of Mars, has a diameter of 90 kilometers and a current depth of barely 900 meters. In the east, the crater floor is bounded by an approximately 700 meters deep trough. It may be associated with the landslide on the western edge of the crater. Some gullies formed on the upper edge of the through - possible evidence for water seepage. Eye - catching are small (500 to 2500 Meters) dark features on the impact crater floor. These features are Barchan dunes, one of the most abundant dune forms in arid environment. One can find dunes of this kind on earth e.g. in the West - African Namib desert
March: Promethei Planum - Mars: Promethei Planum - Promethei Planum is a region located near the southern pole of Mars. This region is seasonally covered with a thick layer of ice up to 3500 metres thick. On this image obtained by the Mars Express probe on September 22, 2005, an impact crater about 100 km wide and 800 metres deep is visible to the right (north). It is partially covered with ice. In the center of the image, structures formed by lava flows; on the left of the image, ice, which is an extension of the southern polar cap. Promethei Planum, an area seasonally covered with layer of ice more than 3500 m thick layer of ice in the martian south polar region, was the subject of the High Resolution Stereo Camera's focus on 22 September 2005 as Mars Express was in orbit above the Red Planet. Promethei Planum lies at approximately 76* south and 105* east. An approximately 100 km - large and 800 m - deep impact crater is visible in the northern part of the image. The crater's interior is partly covered in ice. In the centre of the image are structures that may have been created by basaltic lava flow from a volcano. This area is covered in ice. The dark dunes towards the bottom of the image are most likely made up of dust originating from this lava flow or volcanic ash. A broad sheet of ice, which is an extension of the south polar ice cap is located south of the lava flow, to the left in the (nadir) image. The steep flanks clearly show white, clean ice. The thickness of the ice is between 900 and 1100 m
March: Promethei Planum - Mars: Promethei Planum - Promethei Planum is a region located near the southern pole of Mars. This region is seasonally covered with a thick layer of ice up to 3500 metres thick. On this perspective image obtained by the Mars Express probe on September 22, 2005, an impact crater about 100 km wide and 800 metres deep is visible at the bottom of the image. It is partially covered with ice. On top, structures formed by lava flows; at the top of the picture, ice, which is an extension of the southern polar cap. The thickness of the ice is between 900 and 1100 m
Mars: faults in Claritas Fossae. - Mars: fractures in Claritas Fossae - Fracture system in Claritas Fossae, a region south of the Tharsis volcanoes. These fractures, ranging from a few kilometres to a hundred kilometres, are probably associated with the tectonic activity that led to elevation of the Tharsis plateau. Perspective image obtained by the Mars Express probe in 2004. On 29 June 2004 the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data in orbit 563 with a ground resolution of approximately 62 metres per pixel. The images cover Claritas Fossae at approximately 25* southern latitude and 253* eastern longitude. Claritas Fossae is located on the Tharsis rise, south of the three large volcanoes known as the Tharsis Montes, and extends roughly north to south for approximately 1800 km. Claritas Fossae, which is composed of a series of linear fractures with widths ranging from a few kilometres to 100 km, is roughly 150 km wide in the north and 550 km wide in the south. The series of fractures comprising Claritas Fossae are radial to the Tharsis rise, consistent with the idea that they are the result of enormous stresses associated with formation of the 8 to 10 km high Tharsis rise. In the east of the color image, a prominent linear feature exhibiting a dark shadow is visible. This is most likely a normal fault, the eastern edge of a 100 km wide graben, a block of terrain that drops relative to its surroundings as a result of extension. The graben is characterized by a smooth surface and the elevation difference between the eastern edge of the graben and the plains east of the normal fault is roughly 2.3 km. Alternatively, this 100 km wide feature may have resulted from surface collapse due to magma withdrawal
Mars: crater in Myers Valles - Mars: crater in Myers Valles - Mamers Valles is a valley about 1000 km long located in the region of Deuteronilus Mensae, north of Arabia Terra. The image obtained by the Mars Express probe on 5 August 2006 shows a crater at the end of this valley. This circular formation measures about thirty kilometres in diameter and is 1400 metres deep. There are traces of flow of material probably composed of water ice, similar to the relief left by the passage of glaciers on Earth. The High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained images focusing on a depression that displays a crater at the end of the long, winding valley, Mamers Valles. The data was obtained on 5 August 2006 with a ground resolution of approximately 14 m/per pixel. The image is centred at approximately 39* north and 17* east on the planet. The valley of Mamers Valles is approximately 1000 km long, running along the boundary between the northern lowlands and southern highlands in the region of Deuteronilus Mensae. This region shows numerous deep and wide labyrinth - like valleys and circular depressions which often show structures formed by flowing liquid on their even floors. The structures formed by the flows are thought to be ice - rich debris flows. They show some resemblance to block glaciers seen on Earth. The patches of rock at the centre of the depression are thought to be remnants of rock detached from the flanks of the depression and transported into its centre. The wrinkle ridges, are formed by compressive forces acting on the surface. The dark coloured material inside the crater could have formed in - situ or was transported by the wind. The depression is approximately 30 km wide and 1400 m deep
