Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1300 in Eridan - NGC 1300, barred spiral galaxy in Eridanus - The galaxy NGC 1300 is located about 60 million years ago - light and extends over about 85 000 years - light. Spiral galaxies appear in a variety of guises, but none are more intriguing than the barred variety. As their name suggests, these galaxies are distinguished by a bar, extending (in this case) like two more of less straight assemblies of stars either side of the bright nucleus. Caught up in the bar are two dust lanes, emerging on either side of the nuclear mass. At some distance from the nucleus, the straight, almost structurreless bar and dust lanes abruptly turn at a sharp angle. It is here that the delicately curved arms of the spiral begin, and it is here that star formation is at its most concentrated. Many spirals have such bars, including the Milky Way, where it is a subtle feature, very difficult to detect. NGC 1300, in the southern constellation of Eridanus is among the finest examples. It is about 60 million light years distant and is an outlying member of a well - populated group of galaxies

Supernova 1987A before and after explosion - Supernova 1987A with precursor image overlaid - Image of the Supernova 1987A, obtained on March 8, 1987. The photo of the star Sanduleak - 69* 202, photographed two years ago. Images obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. The brightest star in the colour photograph is supernova 1987A, photographed with the AAT two months before it reached its maximum brightness. Superimposed in register on this image is a negative photograph of the region around the supernova copied from an AAT plate that was exposed in 1985, two years before the supernova was seen to explode. The precursor star appears to be a peculiar shape only because its image is blended with those of two other stars that happen to lie in the same line of sight. Many similar blended images can be seen in the colour photograph. However, it was soon found that the brighter of the three had exploded, and that was a star which had been previously observed and catalogued, as Sanduleak - 69* 202
Crane Constellation - Constellation of Grus - Crane is a constellation in the southern hemisphere, located just below the Southern Fish
Constellation of the Fly - Constellation Musca - Musca is one of the minor southern constellations
The star Fomalhaut - Star Fomalhaut - The star Fomalhaut is located 25 years - light from Earth in the constellation Southern Fish. An extrasolar planet, called Fomalhaut b, with a mass close to Jupiter, is in orbit around it. This image shows Fomalhaut, the star around which the discovered planet Fomalhaut b orbits. Fomalhaut is much hotter than our Sun, 15 times as bright, and lies 25 light - years from Earth. It is blazing through hydrogen at such a furious rate that it will burn out in only one billion years, 10% the lifespan of our star. The field of view is 2.7 x 2.9 degrees
Remnants of the Supernova of Sails - The Vela Supernova Remnant - Remnant of the Supernova of Sails. The supernova exploded 12,000 years ago and is approximately 815 light years away from Earth. Image obtained with the 1.2m Schmidt UK Telescope from Siding Spring. About 120 centuries ago an inconspicuous star in what is now the constellation of Vela brightened by about 100 million times to rival the Moon as the brightest object in the night sky. This photograph shows a portion of the north - western quadrant of an expanding nebulous shell, which now surrounds the site of the explosion. Near the centre of the nebula (and not seen here) is the Vela pulsar, a rapidly - spinning neutron star only a few kilometres in diameter, the remnant of the star that exploded. This tiny object spins about 11 times a second and until recently was among the faintest stars ever studied at optical wavelengths, a far cry from its brief glory as one of the brightest stars ever seen

Constellations of Burin and Dove - Constellations of Caelum and Columba - Constellations of Burin (right) and Dove (left) in the southern hemisphere. The bright star at the bottom of the picture is Canopus. Caelum (originally Caelum Sculptoris, the sculptor's chisel) is a small, rather obscure constallation hewn from rather thin pickings between Eridanus and Columba by Abbe de Lacaille in the 1750s. It is only 125 degrees square, making it 81st in area out of 88 constellations. Rather more interesting to the eye is Columba (originally Columba Noachi, Noah's dove) easily found between Sirius and Canopus. It is twice the area of Caelum and contans a few brighter stars. Best seen in the early evening in January
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 7098: The barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 is located about 95 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the octant. Image obtained by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Approximately 95 million light-years away, in the southern constellation of Octans (The Octant), lies NGC 7098 - an intriguing spiral galaxy with numerous sets of double features. The first of NGC 7098's double features is a duo of distinct ring-like structures that loop around the galaxy's hazy heart. This central region hosts a second double feature: a double bar. NGC 7098 has also developed features known as ansae, visible as small, bright streaks at each end of the central region. Ansae are visible areas of overdensity - they commonly take looping, linear, or circular shapes, and can be found at the extremities of planetary ring systems, in nebulous clouds, and, as is the case with NGC 7098, in parts of galaxies that are packed to the brim with stars. This image is formed from data gathered by the Focal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) instrument, installed on Eso's Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory. An array of distant galaxies are also visible throughout the frame, the most prominent being the small, edge-on, spiral galaxy visible to the left of NGC 7098, known as ESO 048-G007
Peacock Constellation - Constellation of Pavo - Pavo, the Peacock, lies south of Sagittarius and Corona Australis, and is one of Johann Bayer's twelve constellations, introduced in 1603. It is one of several birds in the southern sky, including Apus, Grus, Phoenix and Tucanae. The legends say that the goddess of the heavens, Juno (the Greek Hera) ordered a hundred - eyed giant, Argos Panoptes, to keep his eyes on her wandering husband, Jupiter. He ordered Argos slain and Juno transformed the 100 eyes into the Peacock's tail. These eyes are also meant to represent the starry sky
Spiral galaxy NGC 7793 in the Sculptor - Spiral galaxy NGC 7793 in Sculptor - The spiral galaxy NGC 7793 is located 12 million years ago - light from Earth and resides in a grouping of several galaxies called the Sculptor's group. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 10 hours of poses. NGC 7793 is at a distance of about 12 million light years; it is a member of the Sculptor group, where the galaxies are few in number and well separated in space. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 10 Hours of exposure

Constellation of the Altar - Constellations of Ara, Norma and Telescopium - The Altar is a constellation of the southern hemisphere located between the Centaur and the Wolf. Also visible are the constellations of the Rule and the Telescope. Ara (the Altar) is an inconspicuous constellation in the southern sky. It was once considered part of Centaurus and Lupus but became separated when the 'modern' constellation Norma was created by Lacaille in the 1750s. It was recognised by the Greeks and Romans and was visualised as the altar on which the Centaur, Centaurus, was to sacrifice Lupus, the Wolf. This is reflected in its Latin name, Ara Centauri. The constellation is the 63rd largest in the sky and covers about 237 square degrees. The best - known objects in this field are some diffuse dusty nebulae and star clusters. The only named star in Ara is Karnot Mizbeach (ss Ara). Best seen in the early evening in July

Galaxy NGC 4650A in Centaurus - Galaxy NGC 4650A in Centaurus - The polar ring galaxy NGC 4650A is located about 130 million years away from Earth. The host galaxy is surrounded by a polar ring shaped like gas and stars. This type of galaxy is rarely observed. This image was obtained by the ANTU telescope of the VLT in 1998. This is a colour photo from the VLT that shows NGC 4650A, a member of the so - called Centaurus chain of galaxies in the southern constellation of that name. NGC 4650A is a complex system that is located at a distance of about 130 million light - years. There are two main components, a lenticular - shaped galaxy (of type S0), surrounded by a knotty extended ring - like distribution of stars, dust and gas, almost perpendicular to each other. The stars in the central, structureless region and the material (stars, gas, and dust) in the outer disk rotate in two different planes that are almost perpendicular to each other. The observed motions indicate the presence of a significant halo of dark matter within the system, although it is still unclear to which of the two components this matter belongs. Because the velocities of stars and gas can be measured in two independent planes, NGC 4650A serves as a prototype for detailed studies of the shape of dark matter halos. The origin of this strange spatial configuration is not known with certainty. It is likely, however, that an encounter between two galaxies may have played a significant role. The photo is based on a series of seven exposures through three different optical filters, obtained under mediocre observing conditions during a small break in the technical work. They have been combined to produce the present photo
Supernova 1987A before and after explosion - Supernova 1987A before and after the explosion - Images of the Supernova 1987A, on the left, obtained on March 8, 1987, and of the same photograph field on the right on February 5, 1984. Images obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. Sometime during 23 February 1987 a supernova exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a nearby galaxy. However, the LMC is about 170,000 light years distant, so the supernova exploded 170,000 years ago. It was discovered the following day and brightened rapidly to become the first supernova to be easily visible to the unaided eye for almost 400 years. This photograph shows the field around the site of the supernova in great detail, both before the supernova exploded (right) and about 10 days afterwards, when it was still brightening
Centauri Omega globular cluster - The globular cluster Omega Centauri, NGC 5139 - Visible to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, Centaurus Omega is the most massive globular cluster in the galaxy. About 17,000 light years ago, millions of stars nearly 12 billion years old are concentrated here. NGC 5139 is the largest and most spectacular globular cluster in the entire night sky, and the largest in our galaxy. At 36 arc minutes, Omega Centauri is larger than the full moon in apparent size. It is located about 17,000 light years away from our Sun and at 4th magnitude, is easily visible without a telescope as a “” star”” in the constellation of Centaurus. It contains about 2 million stars, almost twice as many as M13. The stars in globular clusters are generally older, redder and less massive than our Sun
Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - The Southern Triangle constellations, the Fly, and the Southern Cross are also visible. Circinus (the drawing Comppass) is an inconspicuous constellation introduced by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, who observed the southern sky from the Cape of Good Hope between 1750 and 1754. He named 14 constellations, many of them associated with science or navigation, such as Microscopium and Telescopium, Octans the Octant and Antlia Pneumatica, the air pump. Circinus contains no bright or named stars and covers 93 square degrees, making it the fourth - smallest. Triangulum Australe is the southern hemisphere counterpart of Triangulum. It is a bigger constellation and contains brighter stars than Triangulum and it never sets for most of Australia. Its brightest star is named Atria (for alpha Trianguli Australis), in the manner of Acrux in the Southern Cross. It is easily seen near a and ss Centaurus. Crux and Musca are also visible in this image
Flying Fish Constellation - Constellation of Volans - Flying Fish is a small constellation in the southern hemisphere. The bright star on its left is Miaplacidus, in Carene. Volans was introduced by Johann Bayer in 1603 as Piscis Volans, the Flying Fish and in old star atlases is seen flying alongside the ancient sailing ship Argo Navis. However, the fish has flown and only the adjective Volans (flying) remains. The stars form a distinctive pattern but at magnitudes between 3.7 and 4.0 they are not bright. On the other hand the constellation is easily found between the bright stars Avior (epsilon Carinae) and Miaplacidus (beta Carinae) with the fish apparently flying towards the LM
Nebula NGC 6188 in the Altar - The NGC 6188 nebula and NGC 6193 in Ara - Nebula NGC 6188 is located about 4000 years from Earth. It is home to a cluster of young stars NGC 6193, formed three million years ago. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Here we see two bright stars whose radiant energy is beating down on to the surface of a dark cloud, very similar to the Horsehead in Orion. The cloud itself is opaque and because of that, very cold inside. These conditions are ideal for the formation of organic molecules on the surfaces of the chilled dust particles. The opacity of the cloud protects the fragile molecules within from the energetic radiation of nearby stars, but as its surface is gradually warmed and eroded, the delicate organic molecules are destroyed and the hydrogen released glows as a distinctive red emission nebula
Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, at the bottom of the picture, is probably interacting with it. Image obtained with a 50 cm telescope, composite of several poses. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The slightly bluish colour of parts of the fainter galaxy is suggestive of star formation, probably triggered by the interaction. Encounters between galaxies such as this are common, and often lead to them merging into a single entity. It is likely that the dust lane of NGC 5078 is the remnant of a dusty spiral which fell into it long ago. The galaxies are about 95 million light years distant
Constellations of Grus and Piscis Austrinus - The Crane is a constellation in the southern hemisphere, located just below the Southern Fish. Grus (the Crane) is meant to represent a water bird, which may be a crane or perhaps a flamingo. This stellar grouping was introduced by Johann Bayer in his star atlas of 1603. Because of its location in the southern sky it is not visible from north latitudes above 40 degrees. Even if it were visible, it would hardly be remarked upon. Piscis Austrinus (the Southern Fish) once included Grus, and nowadays represents the Southern Fish, drinking from the water poured by Aquarius, adjoining it to the north. Piscis Austrinus was one of Ptolemy's 48 constellations and its brightest star is Fomalhaut, a name drived from the English for fish's mouth
Globular cluster NGC 6397 in the Altar - Globular cluster NGC 6397 in Ara - The globular cluster NGC 6397, is located about 7200 years - light in the southern constellation of the Altar. It contains 400,000 stars. Image obtained by the 2.2m telescope of La Silla in Chile. The globular cluster NGC 6397, located at a distance of approx. 7,200 light - years in the southern constellation Ara. It has undergone a “core collapse”” and the central area is very dense. It contains about 400,000 stars and its age (based on evolutionary models) is 13,400+/ - 800 million years. The photo is a composite of exposures in the B -, V - and I - bands obtained in the frame of the Pilot Stellar Survey with the Wide - Field - Imager (WFI) camera at the 2.2 - m ESO/MPI telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory
Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar
Open cluster NGC 3293 in Carene - Open star cluster NGC 3293 in Carina - Star cluster located in the constellation Carene about 8500 years ago - light from Earth. Unlike the Sun, many stars are found in brilliant clusters such as NGC 3293 where they spend their lives. At birth, which should have been at much the same time for all the stars in NGC 3293, the most massive stars are hot and very luminous and therefore appear as the brightest blue stars. With time they deplete their supplies of nuclear fuel, hydrogen. This evolutionary process involves cooling, so that the stars become redder, and would ordinarily disappear from view, but they also swell to gigantic proportions and so remain visible. The bright orange star in NGC 3293 is the member of the cluster which has aged fastest. This cluster is in the constellation of Carina at a distance of about 8500 light years
Peacock Constellation - Constellation of Pavo - Pavo, the Peacock, lies south of Sagittarius and Corona Australis, and is one of Johann Bayer's twelve constellations, introduced in 1603.
Planetary nebula NGC 5189 in the Fly - NGC 5189 - Planetary nebula in Musca - This nebula is located about 3000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Fly. Image obtained by the Gemini telescope. NGC 5189 is a planetary nebula. At the end of its life, a star with a mass less than eight times that of the Sun will blow its outer layers away, giving rise to a planetary nebula. Some of these stellar puffballs are almost round, resembling huge soap bubbles or giant planets (hence the name), but others, such as NGC 5189 are more intricate. In particular, this planetary nebula exhibits a curious S” - shaped profile, with a central bar that is most likely the projection of an inner ring of gas discharged by the star, seen edge on. The details of the physical processes producing such a complex symmetry from a simple, spherical star are still the object of astronomical controversy. One possibility is that the star has a very close (but unseen) companion. Over time the orbits drift due to precession and this could result in the complex curves on the opposite sides of the star visible in this image. This image has been taken with the Gemini Telescope.

Elliptical galaxy NGC 4696 in Centaur - Elliptical galaxy NGC 4696 - Image of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4696, in Centaur, obtained by the Hubble space telescope. This picture, taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, shows NGC 4696, the largest galaxy in the Centaurus Cluster. The huge dust lane, around 30 000 light - years across, that sweeps across the face of the galaxy makes NGC 4696 look different from most other elliptical galaxies. Viewed at certain wavelengths, strange thin filaments of ionised hydrogen are visible within it. In this picture, these structures are visible as a subtle marbling effect across the galaxy's bright centre
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 4945 in Centaurus - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 4945 in Centaurus - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 4945 is located about 13 million years away - light from Earth. This image was obtained by the 2,2m MPG telescope in La Silla in 1999. NGC 4945 is a barred spiral galaxy in the Centaurus Group of galaxies, located only six times farther away than the prominent Andromeda Galaxy. The thin disk galaxy is oriented nearly edge - on, and shrouded in dark dust. NGC 4945 is thought to be quite similar to our own Milky Way Galaxy. X - ray observations reveal, however, that NGC 4945 has an unusual, energetic, Seyfert 2 nucleus that might house a large black hole. Image obtained by the 2.2m MPG telescope at La Silla observatory
Radiotelescopes ALMA - The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) - Artwork - Artist's view of the European network of submilimetric antennas ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) located in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), one of the largest ground - based astronomy projects of the next decade, is a major new facility for world astronomy. ALMA will be comprised of a giant array of 12 - m submillimetre quality antennas, with baselines of several kilometers. An additional, compact array of 7 - m and 12 - m antennas is also foreseen. Construction of ALMA started in 2003 and will be completed in 2010. The ALMA project is an international collaboration between Europe, Japan and North America in cooperation with the Republic of Chile
Super massive star Eta Carinae - Super massive star Eta Carinae - Eta Carinae is one of the most massive stars in our galaxy. Its mass would be about 120 times that of the Sun with a diameter 1000 times larger than our star. The image obtained by the Hubble space telescope reveals two expanding gas lobes; it is the nebula called the Homuncule, vestige of a huge explosion that the star experienced 150 years ago. The star blows its exterior atmosphere and will eventually explode in a supernova. Eta Carinae is located approximately 8000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Carene. A huge, billowing pair of gas and dust clouds is captured in this stunning Hubble telescope picture of the super - massive star Eta Carinae. Even though Eta Carinae is more than 8,000 light - years away, features 10 billion miles across (about the diameter of our solar system) can be distinguished. Eta Carinae suffered giant outburst about 150 years ago, when it became one of the brightest stars in the southern sky. Although the star released as much visible light as a supernova explosion, it survived the outburst. Somehow, the explosion produced two lobes and a large, thin equatorial disk, all moving outward at about 1.5 million miles per hour. Estimated to be 100 times heftier than our Sun, Eta Carinae may be one of the most massive stars in our galaxy
