Double black hole and gravitational waves - Artist's view of a gravitational wave generated by a system of two black holes, spreading over space-time fabric
Black hole - Black hole - Artwork: The event horizon represents the limit of the spatial extension of the black hole, defining what can be considered as its size. The region delimited by the horizon of events thus differs from the central gravitational singularite, which would be of an infinite density - Event horizon is a boundary in spacetime beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer. It is defined as “” the point of no return”””, the point at which the gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible, even for light. Light emitted from inside the event horizon can never reach the outside observer

Supermassif black hole - Artist view - Supermassive Black hole - Artist view - Artist view of a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. This artist's concept illustrates a supermassive black hole with millions to billions times the mass of our sun. Supermassive black holes are enormously dense objects buried at the hearts of galaxies. (Smaller black holes also exist throughout galaxies.) In this illustration, the supermassive black hole at the center is surrounded by matter flowing onto the black hole in what is termed an accretion disk. This disk forms as the dust and gas in the galaxy falls onto the hole, attracted by its gravity

Wind emis by a Black Hole Supermassif - Artist view - Wind from Supermassive Black hole - Artist view - Wind artist's view emitted by a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. These extremely strong winds could hinder star formation within the galaxy. Supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies blast radiation and ultra-fast winds outward, as illustrated in this artist's conception. New data from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuStar) and the European Space Agency's (ESA's) XMM-Newton telescopes show that these winds, which contain gases of highly ionized atoms, blow in a nearly spherical fashion, emanating in every direction, as shown in the artwork. The findings rule out the possibility that the winds blow in narrow beams. With the shape and extent of the winds known, the researchers were able to determine the winds' strength. The high-speed winds are powerful enough to shut down star formation throughout a galaxy

Supermassif black hole - Artist's view - Supermassive black hole with torn-apart star (artist's impression): Artist's view of a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. This artist's impression depicts a rapidly spinning supermassive black hole surrounded by an accretion disc. This thin disc of rotating material consists of the leftovers of a Sun-like star which was ripped apart by the tidal forces of the black hole. Shocks in the colliding debris as well as heat generated in accretion led to a burst of light, resembling a supernova explosion

Primitive black hole - Artist view - Primitive Black hole - Artist view - Artist view of a primitive galactic black hole. The presence of 13 billion-year-old black holes was observed by the Spitzer space telescope. These distant black holes appear in the early stages of their formation; their accretion disc contains no dust. This artist's conception illustrates one of the most primitive supermassive black holes known (central black dot) at the core of a young, star-rich galaxy. Astronomers using Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope have uncovered two of these early objects, dating back to about 13 billion years ago. The monstrous black holes are among the most distant known, and appear to be in the very earliest stages of formation, earlier than any observed so far. Unlike all other supermassive black holes probed to date, this primitive duo, called J0005-0006 and J0303-0019, lacks dust. As the drawing shows, gas swirls around a black hole in what is called an accretion disk. Usually, the accretion disk is surrounded by a dark doughnut-like dusty structure called a dust torus. But for the primitive black holes, the dust tori are missing and only gas disks are observed. This is because the early universe was clean as a whistle. Enough time had not passed for molecules to clump together into dust particles. Some black holes forming in this era thus started out lacking dust. As they grew, gobbling up more and more mass, they are thought to have accumulated dusty rings. This illustration also shows how supermassive black holes can distort space and light around them (see warped stars behind black hole). Stars from the galaxy can be seen sprinkled throughout, and distant mergers between other galaxies are illustrated in the background
Stellar black hole - Artist's view - A stellar black hole - Artist's view of a system composed of a star orbiting around a black hole. A stellar black hole is born from the gravitational collapse of a massive star. The stellar black holes have a mass of some solar masses. A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that it stops any form of material or radiation from escaping. Combining observations done with Eso's Very Large Telescope and Nasa's Chandra X-ray telescope, astronomers have uncovered the most powerful pair of jets ever seen from a stellar black hole. The black hole blows a huge bubble of hot gas, 1000 light-years across or twice as large and tens of times more powerful than the other such microquasars. The stellar black hole belongs to a binary system as pictured in this artist's impression

Stellar black hole - Artist's view - A stellar black hole - Artist's view of a system composed of a Wolf-Rayet star orbiting a black hole. A stellar black hole is born from the gravitational collapse of a massive star. The stellar black holes have a mass of some solar masses. A black hole is a region of space whose gravitation is so strong that it will prevent any form of material or radiation from escaping. This artist's impression depicts a star-mass black hole. The black hole has a mass of about twenty times the mass of the Sun and is associated with a Wolf-Rayet star: a star that will become a black hole itself. The black hole is stripping matter away from the star as they orbit each other

Markarian Galaxy 817 - Galaxy Markarian 817 - The spiral galaxy Markarian 817 is located 430 million light years ago in the constellation Dragon. This galaxy houses in its heart a supermassive black hole. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on August 2, 2009. Rings of brilliant blue stars encircle the bright, active core of this spiral galaxy, whose monster black hole is blasting material into space at over 14 million kilometers per hour. Viewed nearly face - on, the galaxy, called Markarian 817, shows intense star - forming regions and dark bands of interstellar dust along its spiral arms. Observations by the new Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) aboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope captured the powerful outflow of material from this galaxy. The COS spectrum of Markarian 817 highlights the outflow's dynamic nature. A gas cloud containing hydrogen that was detected in Hubble data taken in 1997 does not appear in the COS observation because the cloud has apparently been driven out by an outflow of material from the galaxy. This discharge is being powered by a huge disc of matter encircling the supermassive black hole, which is 40 million times more massive than our Sun. The disc is driving the material out of the galaxy through powerful winds, produced by streams of charged particles. Some of the outflow rains back onto the galaxy. The rest settles into the intergalactic gas. Markarian 817 is 430 million light - years away in the northern constellation of Draco. The Hubble image was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on 2 August 2009. The composite image was made by using filters that isolate light from the blue, green and infrared portions of the spectrum, as well as emission from glowing hydrogen
Jet of the Galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) seen in X-rays - Galaxy Centaurus A X - ray jet - View in false colours of a 30 000-year long jet - light that escapes from the nucleus of the Galaxy Centaurus A where a massive black hole is suspected. The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth. Image obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope in May 2000. Chandra space telescope detects a jet emanating from the NGC 5128 core and numerous point - like X - ray sources, all bathed in diffuse X - rays produced by several - million - degree gas that fills the galaxy. It is believed that most of these sources are X - ray binaries in which a neutron star or stellar - sized black hole is accreting matter from a nearby companion star. The Cen A image was created from Chandra observations taken on December 5, 1999 and May 17, 2000

Spiral galaxy of the Sombrero M104 infrared view - Sombrero galaxy seen in infrared - Infrared image of the spiral galaxy M104 (Sombrero galaxy), located about 28 million years ago - light, obtained with the Spitzer space telescope in 2004 and January 2005. Infrared radiation shows the dust of the disc visible throughout the circumference. A high emission also comes from the center of the galaxy where a supermassive black hole is thought to reside there. This spiral galaxy is located some 28 million light - years away. The infrared image obtained by Spitzer space telescope in 2004 and 2005 pierces through the obscuring dust, along with the bulge of stars. It shows that the disk is warped, which is often the result of a gravitational encounter with another galaxy; clumpy areas spotted in the far edges of the ring indicate young star - forming regions. Spitzer detected infrared emission not only from the ring, but from the center of the galaxy too, where there is a huge black hole, believed to be a billion times more massive than our Sun

Centaurus A elliptical galaxy (NGC 5128) in Centaurus - The radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128): The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Centaurus. A broad dark band crosses it in the middle, a probable vestige of a collision with a spiral galaxy. This giant galaxy is a powerful radio source known as Centaurus A. It is an active galaxy whose energy comes from a supermassive black hole. - NGC 5128 is the nearest large elliptical galaxies to our sun at about 13 million light years. It is also the nearest of the giant radio galaxies, possessing an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and optically one of the most luminous galaxies in the sky. In 1949, NGC 5128 was found to be a loud source of radio energy, in fact the loudest radio source in its region of the sky (second overall to Cygnus A), earning it the designation Centarus A. As a radio galaxy it releases 1000 times the radio energy of the Milky Way in the form of large bi-directional radio lobes that extend some 800,000 light years into intergalactic space. The source of the radio emission is very compact, about 10 light days across and is believed to be a supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center with a total mass of 200 million to possibly one billion suns. As a radio galaxy, NGC 5128 belongs to the subgroup of galaxies called Active Galaxies, which include Quasars, Seyfert galaxies, Blazars and Radio Galaxies. Active galaxies are distinguished by their prodigious energy output which cannot be explained by their stellar populations and must have another source. Active galaxies have in common an “Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)”” which is believed responsible for their prodigious energy output. Supermassive black holes are almost certainly the central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei, powering the enormous outflows of energy which characterize this subgroup of bright galaxies. Black hole collision in NGC 6240 - Black holes colliding in NGC 6240 - The galaxy NGC 6240, is located about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. This system consists of two colliding galaxies each with a central black hole; in several millions of years, they will form only one galaxy. A composite X-ray image (red, orange and yellow) and visible from the space telescopes Chandra and Hubble. This image of NGC 6240 contains X - ray data from Chandra (shown in red, orange, and yellow) that has been combined with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2002, the discovery of two merging black holes was announced based on Chandra data in this galaxy. The two black holes are a mere 3,000 light years apart and are seen as the bright point - like sources in the middle of the image. Scientists think these black holes are in such close proximity because they are in the midst of spiraling toward each other - a process that began about 30 million years ago. It is estimated that the two black holes will eventually drift together and merge into a larger black hole some tens or hundreds of millions of years from now. NGC 6240 is a peculiar, butterfly - or lobster - shaped galaxy consisting of two smaller merging galaxies. It lies in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder, some 400 million light - years away

NGC 4438 (Arp 120) is a particular galaxy that houses a supermassive black hole. These interacting galaxies (NGC 4438 at left and NGC 4435 at right) lie in the heart of the Virgo galaxy cluster at about 50 million light years away. NGC 4438 (Arp 120) is a peculiar galaxy with a supermassive black hole in its center
Black Holes in 3C75 - Black Holes in 3C75 - Composite X-ray image (blue) and radio (pink) of the active galaxy 3C 75. At the center of this very hot gas mass, two supermassive black holes separated by 25,000 years - light form a binary system of black holes (the two bright points). This composite X - ray/radio image of Abell 400 shows radio jets (pink), immersed in a vast cloud of multimillion degree X - ray emitting gas (blue) that pervades the cluster. The jets emanate from the vicinity of two supermassive black holes (bright spots in the image) in the galaxy. Chandra and radio data confirm that the unusual structure is due to the merger of two large galaxies, whose supermassive black holes are bound together by their mutual gravity. The swept - back appearance of the radio jets is produced by the rapid motion of the galaxy through the hot gas of the cluster, in much the same way that a motorcyclist's scarf is swept back while speeding down the road

Spiral galaxy M77 in the Whale - Active galaxy M77 (NGC 1068) in Cetus - M77 (NGC 1068). This active galaxy is the typical example of a Seyfert II galaxy. It has an active core and houses a massive black hole. She is the object of intense star formation in her spiral arms. NGC 1068 is around 50 million years of light from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. M77 is a Seyfert galaxy, a class of galaxy named for Karl Seyfert who first identified galaxies with emission lines superimposed on the normal radiation from their nuclei in 1943. Such galaxies are a subset of an ill - defined species generally known as 'active galaxies' whose nuclei emit radio - and X - radiation as well as visible light. The least active of the active galaxies are the Seyferts, the most active are the quasars which are mostly so distant that they can only be distinguished from stars by their spectrum. <BR>The common feature of these galaxy types is a small, very bright nucleus thought to host a massive black hole. In Seyferts we see this black hole (or more likely its surrounding shroud of ultra - luminous gas) more or less pole - on. In other active galaxy types at different inclinations the spectrum of the nucleus changes as we see other manifestations of the black hole's influence on its surroundings. M77 is a member of a small group of galaxies at a distance of about 40 million light years
