The spiral galaxy NGC 2775 (or Caldwell 48) (photo)
Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Coma Berenices - The galaxy NGC 4651 (Arp 189) is located about 50 million years away - light from Earth. The Umbrella Galaxy (NGC 4651 or Arp 189) exhibits a jet like spear that's strikingly coherent and narrow. The structure was previously reported by Boris Vorontsov Velyaminov in 1959 but never interpreted as a stellar tidal stream. This deep image additionally shows a spectacular crescent shaped shell surrounding the east side of the star system that corresponds to the apocenter of the dwarf galaxy. Interestingly, a possible second arc on the western side of the galaxy can also be seen in this image. This feature is less obvious because it's partially hidden by the galaxy's disk and suggests we are observing a moderately inclined structure projected into the halo of NGC 4651. This image was produced by combining an hour of exposure through the Isaac Newton Telescope, located on the Spanish island of La Palma, with over 13 hours of imagery obtained with the 0.5 meter telescope at the Blackbird Observatory in New Mexico (USA). This galaxy is located at about 50 million light years away
Spiral galaxy M74 in Pisces - Spiral galaxy M74 in Pisces - Image of the spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628) obtained by the Hubble space telescope in 2003 and 2005. This galaxy is about 80,000 light years and is approximately 30 million light years apart. This image shows in detail the arms of this galaxy or nebulae and clusters of young stars appear in numbers. NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image of the nearby spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628), is a composite of Advanced Camera for Surveys' data taken in 2003 and 2005. A small segment of this image used data from the Canada - France - Hawaii Telescope and the Gemini Observatory to fill in a region that Hubble did not image. M74 is located roughly 32 million light - years away in the direction of the constellation Pisces, the Fish. It is the dominant member of a small group of about half a dozen galaxies, the M74 galaxy group. In its entirety, it is estimated that M74 is home to about 100 billion stars, making it slightly smaller than our Milky Way. Its perfectly symmetrical spiral arms emanate from the central nucleus and are dotted with clusters of young blue stars and glowing pink regions of ionized hydrogen (hydrogen atoms that have lost their electrons). These regions of star formation show an excess of light at ultraviolet wavelengths. Tracing along the spiral arms are winding dust lanes that also begin very near the galaxy's nucleus and follow along the length of the spiral arms
Spiral Galaxy M31 in Andromede - Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany him: M32 (NGC 221) at the top, and M110 (NGC 205) at the bottom. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group, making up about thirty galaxies. M31, the Great Galaxy in Andromeda, is a gigantic collection of more than 300 billion stars and is located about 2 million light years from Earth. Companion dwarf elliptical galaxies M32 and M110 are also visible. M31 and its companions are part of our local group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and M33. The Andromeda Galaxy is headed towards our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to collide with it and possibly merge into a gigantic elliptical galaxy in about 3 billion years. Centaurus A elliptical galaxy (NGC 5128) in Centaurus - The radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128): The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Centaurus. A broad dark band crosses it in the middle, a probable vestige of a collision with a spiral galaxy. This giant galaxy is a powerful radio source known as Centaurus A. It is an active galaxy whose energy comes from a supermassive black hole. - NGC 5128 is the nearest large elliptical galaxies to our sun at about 13 million light years. It is also the nearest of the giant radio galaxies, possessing an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and optically one of the most luminous galaxies in the sky. In 1949, NGC 5128 was found to be a loud source of radio energy, in fact the loudest radio source in its region of the sky (second overall to Cygnus A), earning it the designation Centarus A. As a radio galaxy it releases 1000 times the radio energy of the Milky Way in the form of large bi-directional radio lobes that extend some 800,000 light years into intergalactic space. The source of the radio emission is very compact, about 10 light days across and is believed to be a supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center with a total mass of 200 million to possibly one billion suns. As a radio galaxy, NGC 5128 belongs to the subgroup of galaxies called Active Galaxies, which include Quasars, Seyfert galaxies, Blazars and Radio Galaxies. Active galaxies are distinguished by their prodigious energy output which cannot be explained by their stellar populations and must have another source. Active galaxies have in common an “Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)”” which is believed responsible for their prodigious energy output. Supermassive black holes are almost certainly the central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei, powering the enormous outflows of energy which characterize this subgroup of bright galaxies. The shape of this galaxy is due to a collision with another galaxy, the small galaxy, blue, visible in the upper left corner of the image. Powerful gravitational forces are responsible for the formation of the tail, consisting of stars of dust and gas, which stretches over nearly 28,000 light years and is composed of recently formed and extremely bright blue stars. In the background, more than 6000 galaxies are visible, some more than 12 billion years apart - light. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in April 2002. This picture of the galaxy UGC 10214 was taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which was installed aboard Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope in March during Servicing Mission 3B. Its distorted shape was caused by a small interloper, a very blue, compact galaxy visible in the upper left corner of the more massive Tadpole. The Tadpole resides about 420 million light - years away in the constellation Draco. Seen shining through the Tadpole's disk, the tiny intruder is likely a hit - and - run galaxy that is now leaving the scene of the accident. Strong gravitational forces from the interaction created the long tail of debris, consisting of stars and gas that stretch out more than 280,000 light - years. Numerous young blue stars and star clusters, spawned by the galaxy collision, are seen in the spiral arms, as well as in the long “” tidal”” tail of stars. Each of these clusters represents the formation of up to about a million stars. Their color is blue because they contain very massive stars, which are 10 times hotter and 1 million times brighter than our Sun. Once formed, the star clusters become redder with age as the most massive and bluest stars exhaust their fuel and burn out. These clusters will eventually become old globula

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1300 in Eridan - NGC 1300, barred spiral galaxy in Eridanus - The galaxy NGC 1300 is located about 60 million years ago - light and extends over about 85 000 years - light. Spiral galaxies appear in a variety of guises, but none are more intriguing than the barred variety. As their name suggests, these galaxies are distinguished by a bar, extending (in this case) like two more of less straight assemblies of stars either side of the bright nucleus. Caught up in the bar are two dust lanes, emerging on either side of the nuclear mass. At some distance from the nucleus, the straight, almost structurreless bar and dust lanes abruptly turn at a sharp angle. It is here that the delicately curved arms of the spiral begin, and it is here that star formation is at its most concentrated. Many spirals have such bars, including the Milky Way, where it is a subtle feature, very difficult to detect. NGC 1300, in the southern constellation of Eridanus is among the finest examples. It is about 60 million light years distant and is an outlying member of a well - populated group of galaxies
Our galaxy -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity. The artist's concept also includes a new spiral arm, called the “Far-3 kiloparsec arm,””” discovered via a radio-telescope survey of gas in the Milky Way. This arm is shorter than the two major arms and li

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the Furnace - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in Fornax - NGC 1365 is a barree spiral galaxy that extends over 200,000 years - light. Located 60 million years ago - light, it belongs to the cluster of galaxies of the Furnace. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 1365, the largest spiral in the southern constellation of Fornax, is located at a distance of about 60 million light years. This beautiful galaxy is about as massive as the Milky Way, itself a substantial galaxy. Not much is known about how galaxies take on their beautiful forms, but a good deal is known about their internal organisation. The obvious 'bar' has the nucleus of the galaxy at its hub and is surrounded by masses of cooler stars that appear yellow on colour photographs. The bar itself is also yellowish, and has distinct dust lanes but it terminates abruptly in slender, curved arms that are lit by blue stars and the pink star - forming regions from which they spring
Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromede - M31, the Great galaxy in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany it: M32 (NGC 221) in the center left, and M110 (NGC 205) below. The Andromeda Galaxy is headed towards our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to collide with it and possibly merge into a gigantic elliptical galaxy in about 3 billion years
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 7098: The barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 is located about 95 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the octant. Image obtained by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Approximately 95 million light-years away, in the southern constellation of Octans (The Octant), lies NGC 7098 - an intriguing spiral galaxy with numerous sets of double features. The first of NGC 7098's double features is a duo of distinct ring-like structures that loop around the galaxy's hazy heart. This central region hosts a second double feature: a double bar. NGC 7098 has also developed features known as ansae, visible as small, bright streaks at each end of the central region. Ansae are visible areas of overdensity - they commonly take looping, linear, or circular shapes, and can be found at the extremities of planetary ring systems, in nebulous clouds, and, as is the case with NGC 7098, in parts of galaxies that are packed to the brim with stars. This image is formed from data gathered by the Focal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) instrument, installed on Eso's Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory. An array of distant galaxies are also visible throughout the frame, the most prominent being the small, edge-on, spiral galaxy visible to the left of NGC 7098, known as ESO 048-G007

Galaxies Maffei 1 and Maffei 2 in Cassiopee - Maffei Galaxies in Cassiopeia - Maffei 1 (right) is an elliptical galaxy, Maffei 2 (left) is a barree spiral galaxy. These two galaxies are located about 8 million light years away from Earth. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The picture show two galaxies lying at 2.5 degrees northeast of h and Chi Persei the famous Double Cluster in Cassiopeia. Although the galaxies has been obstructed by inner galactic matters, their actual sizes are larger than 10 arc minutes, fairly large - sized neighboring galaxies. The Maffei I (on the right) is an elliptic, and the Maffei II (on the left) is classified as a bared galaxy. The galaxies are estimated about 8 million light years away. They were discovered by the Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei in 1968. Now we know about 20 galaxies belonging to Maffei Group. Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1345 in Eridan - Barred Spiral galaxy NGC 1345 in Eridanus - Located about 85 million years ago - light from Earth, NGC 1345 is a barree spiral galaxy located in the constellation Eridan. This galaxy belongs to the Eridan galaxy cluster, a group of 70 galaxies. Many galaxies are visible in the background. The spiral galaxy NGC 1345 and its loose and ragged arms dominate this rich image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. It is a member of the Eridanus Galaxy Cluster - - a group of about 70 galaxies that lies 85 million light - years away in the constellation of Eridanus (the River). This region of the night sky is well populated with bright galaxies, with the Fornax Cluster of galaxies also nearby on the celestial sphere, although the two clusters are actually separated by about 20 million light - years. Collectively, they are known as the Fornax Supercluster or the Southern Supercluster. Apart from the main galaxy that dominates the picture, lots more distant galaxies of many shapes and sizes can be seen in this image, some shining right through the foreground galaxy. NGC 1345 itself features an elongated bar extending from the nucleus and spiral arms that emanate outwards, making it a barred spiral type. Classifying galaxy shapes is an important part of astronomical research as it tells us much about how the Universe has evolved. This image comprises data gathered by the Focal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) instrument, mounted on Eso's Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory, Chile. It shows NGC 1398 in striking detail, from the dark lanes of dust mottling its spiral arms, through to the pin-hued star-forming regions sprinkled throughout its outer regions.
Barree spiral galaxy UGC 12158 - Galaxy UGC 12158 - The galaxy UGC 12158, is about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Pegase. In this image obtained by the Hubble space telescope, a blue star is visible near the center of the galaxy (lower left), it is a supernova, SN 2004ef. The galaxy captured in this image, called UGC 12158, certainly isn't camera - shy: this spiral stunner is posing face - on to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys, revealing its structure in fine detail. UGC 12158 is an excellent example of a barred spiral galaxy in the Hubble sequence - - a scheme used to categorise galaxies based on their shapes. Barred spirals, as the name suggest, feature spectacular swirling arms of stars that emanate from a bar - shaped centre. Such bar structures are common, being found in about two thirds of spiral galaxies, and are thought to act as funnels, guiding gas to their galactic centres where it accumulates to form newborn stars. These aren't permanent structures: astronomers think that they slowly disperse over time, so that the galaxies eventually evolve into regular spirals. The appearance of a galaxy changes little over millions of years, but this image also contains a short - lived and brilliant interloper - - the bright blue star just to the lower left of the centre of the galaxy is very different from the several foreground stars seen in the image. It is in fact a supernova inside UGC 12158 and much further away than the Milky Way stars in the field - - at a distance of about 400 million light - years! This stellar explosion, called SN 2004ef, was first spotted by two British amateur astronomers in September 2004 and the Hubble data shown here form part of the follow - up observations. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through blue (F475W, colored blue), yellow (F606W, c

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1483 in Dorado - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1483 in Dorado - NGC 1483 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 60 million years ago - light in the southern constellation of Dorado. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 1483 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the southern constellation of Dorado. The nebulous galaxy features a bright central bulge and diffuse arms with distinct star - forming regions. In the background, many other distant galaxies can be seen. The constellation Dorado is home to the Dorado Group of galaxies, a loose group comprising an estimated 70 galaxies and located some 62 million light - years away. The Dorado group is much larger than the Local Group that includes the Milky Way (and which contains around 30 galaxies) and approaches the size of a galaxy cluster. Galaxy clusters are the largest groupings of galaxies (and indeed the largest structures of any type) in the Universe to be held together by their gravity. Barred spiral galaxies are so named because of the prominent bar - shaped structures found in their center. They form about two thirds of all spiral galaxies, including the Milky Way. Recent studies suggest that bars may be a common stage in the formation of spiral galaxies, and may indicate that a galaxy has reached full maturity. Image taken with the Hubble space telescope (HST)
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 4319 and Markarian quasar 205 - Galaxy NGC 4319 and quasar Markarian 205 - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 4319, in the center, is 80 million years - light in the constellation of the Dragon. The Markarian 205 quasar, on the top right, is 14 times further at about 1 billion light years. These two objects are therefore not interacting; on the other hand, the galaxy NGC 4319 is probably interacting with the galaxy NGC 4291, out of field, as the weak arm at the bottom left allows. Quasars are galaxies that create an extremely bright core. Image made by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002. In this NASA Hubble Space Telescope image, an odd celestial duo, the spiral galaxy NGC 4319 (center) and a quasar called Markarian 205 (upper right), appear to be neighbors. In reality, the two objects don't even live in the same city. NGC 4319 is 80 million light - years from Earth. Markarian 205 (Mrk 205) is more than 14 times farther away, residing 1 billion light - years from Earth. The apparent close alignment of Mrk 205 and NGC 4319 is simply a matter of chance. Astronomers used two methods to determine the distances to these objects. First, they measured how their light has been stretched in space due to the university's expansion. Then they measured how much the ultraviolet light from Mrk 205 dimmed as it passed through the interstellar gas of NGC 4319. <BR>The Hubble Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 image shows the inner region of NGC 4319. In addition to the galaxy's inner spiral arms, an outer arm is faintly visible at lower left. The unusually dark and misshapen dust lanes in the galaxy's inner region are evidence of a disturbance, probably caused by an earlier interaction with another galaxy, NGC 4291, which is not in the photograph. At a distance of 1 billion light - years, Mrk 205 is a relatively nearby quasar. Many quasars reside much farther away. Quasars, once known only as mysterious point -
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in the Giraffe - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in Camelopardalis - NGC 2146 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 70 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Giraffe (Camelopardalis). Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 2146 is classified as a barred spiral due to its shape, but the most distinctive feature is the dusty spiral arm that has looped in front of the galaxy's core as seen from our perspective. The forces required to pull this structure out of its natural shape and twist it up to 45 degrees are colossal. The most likely explanation is that a neighbouring galaxy is gravitationally perturbing it and distorting the orbits of many of NGC 2146's stars. It is probable that we are currently witnessing the end stages of a process which has been occurring for tens of millions of years. NCG 2146 is undergoing intense bouts of star formation, to such an extent that it is referred to as a starburst galaxy. This is a common state for barred spirals, but the extra gravitational disruption that NGC 2146 is enduring no doubt exacerbates the situation, compressing hydrogen - rich nebulae and triggering stellar birth. Measuring about 80 000 light - years from end to end, NGC 2146 is slightly smaller than the Milky Way. It lies approximately 70 million light - years distant in the faint northern constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Although it is fairly easy to see with a moderate - sized telescope as a faint elongated blur of light it was not spotted until 1876 when the German astronomer Friedrich Winnecke found it visually using just a 16 cm telescope. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through a near - infrared filter (F814W, coloured blue and orange/brown) were combined with images taken in a filter that isolates the glow from hydrogen gas (F658N, coloured red). Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is located about 25 million years ago - light from Earth. The morphology of this galaxy is very similar to that of our galaxy, the Lactee Way. Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. It also has other similarities to the Milky Way that are not visible here (but seen on a deep image) with at least one distorted companion galaxy superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds. The CCD chip that made this picture at the prime focus of the AAT (Siding Spring) covers about 7 arc minutes of sky. But the galaxy has a much bigger angular size than this, so a series of four overlapping exposures were made in red, green and blue light. Each 3 - color set was made into a color picture and the four images merged to produce the (almost) seamless image seen here

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6872 in interaction with IC 4970 in the Peacock - Barred spiral interacting galaxy NGC 6872 in Pavo - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 6872 and lenticular IC 4970 are located about 300 million years away - light from Earth. NGC 6872 extends over nearly 750,000 years - light. Image obtained by the ANTU telescope of the VLT on March 29, 1999. View of the spectacular barred spiral galaxy NGC 6872 obtained with FORS1 at ANTU telescope (VLT) in the morning of March 29, 1999. It is of type SBB and is accompanied by a smaller, interacting galaxy, IC 4970 of type S0 (just above the centre). The bright object to the lower right of the galaxies is a star in the Milky Way whose image has been strongly overexposed and exhibits multiple optical reflections in the telescope and instrument. There are also many other, fainter and more distant galaxies of many different forms in the field. The upper left spiral arm of NGC 6872 is significantly disturbed and is populated by a plethora of blueish objects, many of which are star - forming regions. This may have been caused by a recent passage of IC 4970 through it. This interesting system is located in the southern constellation Pavo (The Peacock). It is comparatively distant, almost 300 million light - years away. It extends over more than 7 arcmin in the sky and its real size from tip to tip is thus almost 750,000 light - years. It is in fact one of the largest known, barred spiral galaxies

The cluster of galaxies in Fornax - The cluster of galaxies in Fornax - clusters of galaxies situated about 55 million years ago - light. In the center of the image is the barree spiral galaxy NGC 1365; at the bottom right of the image, the interaction galaxy NGC 1316 - 17 (Fornax A), which is one of the strongest known radiosource. Galaxies can be separated by their appearance into two broad groups, spirals and ellipticals. An example of a spiral galaxy, NGC 1365, is seen in center of this picture. In contrast, most of the galaxies in this cluster are ellipticals, which contain little or no gas or evidence of star formation; indeed they are composed millions of rather old, yellowish stars. Unlike many of the stars in spiral systems, those in ellipticals have orbits which are not confined to a narrow plane, so the galaxy can have a shape anywhere between a perfect sphere and an American football. This kind of galaxy is the most common type in the photograph as it is in all of the nearby Universe. The picture also illustrates another distinctive property of ellipticals, their gregarious nature - they congregate in clusters, like this group of galaxies in Fornax, 55 million light years distant. This image also shows us another, less common kind of galaxy. In the lower right corner is NGC 1316 - 17. This is interacting pair of galaxies is one of the strongest nearby radio galaxies, known as Fornax A. Finally, in the opposite corner is a bright yellow (K5) 4.5 magnitude star in the adjoining constellation of Eridanus
Our galaxy-position of the Sun -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. This annotated artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. This arm is shorter t

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2442 in Flying Fish - NGC 2442, a barred spiral galaxy in Volans - NGC 2442 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 50 million years ago - light. Its asymmetrical shape suggests that a galaxy interacts with it. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This unusual barred spiral galaxy is in the far southern constellation of Volans and was discovered by Sir John Herschel who described one of its spiral arms as hook - like. Although not seen here, (but evident on very deep images) NGC 2442 appears to have a less massive, distant companion that is also distorted, and it seems likely that the two have had a close encounter in the recent past. If there are no further meetings, the forces that hold NGC 2442 together will restore galaxy to a more symmetrical spiral form. However, much more likely is that the companion has been captured by the distorted spiral and will eventually be devoured by it, triggering a dramatic bout of star formation. NGC 2442 is about 50 million light years distant

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in the Great Bear - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in Ursa Major - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 is located about 110 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy houses a black hole in its heart as well as large zones of star formation in its arms. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This classic shot of a galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 3259 is a bright barred spiral galaxy located approximately 110 million light - years from Earth. Being a fully - formed active galaxy, its bright central bulge hosts a supermassive black hole, whose huge appetite for matter explains the high luminosity of the galaxy's core: as it devours its surroundings, the black hole emits intense radiation across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, including in visible light. The beautiful spiral arms of the galaxy are not left out either as they contain dark lanes of dust and gas, ideal spawning grounds for stars. These bright, young, hot stars appear in rich clusters in the galaxy's arms and are what gives the galaxy its blueish hue. Interestingly, the galaxy has a small companion (visible to the left of the image), a much smaller galaxy that may be orbiting NGC 3259. In the background, numerous distant galaxies can be seen, easily identifiable by their elliptical shapes. They are visible here mainly in infrared light, which is shown in red in this image
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 613 in the Sculptor - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 613 in Sculptor - Unlike most barred spirals, this galaxy has multiple arms. It's assumed that a black hole sits in its center. NGC 613 is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy in the southern constellation Sculptor. This galaxy is inclined by 32 degrees and, contrary to most barred spirals, has many arms that give it a tentacular appearance. Prominent dust lanes are visible along the large - scale bar. Extensive star - formation occurs in this area, at the ends of the bar, and also in the nuclear regions of the galaxy. The gas at the centre, as well as the radio properties are indicative of the presence of a massive black hole in the centre of NGC 613

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 4945 in Centaurus - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 4945 in Centaurus - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 4945 is located about 13 million years away - light from Earth. This image was obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This is one of many peculiar galaxies that populate the large southern constellation of Centaurus. This remarkable spiral galaxy seen almost edge - on, and the spiral structure is chaotic and difficult to discern. In part this is because the galaxy is itself extremely dusty, and it is seen through dust in the Milky Way. These effects together account for its yellowish hue, though patches of bluish stars can be seen. The dust in NGC 4945 absorbs most of the visible light, especially the blue light from the numerous bright stars known present within the galaxy. This energy is re - radiated at infrared wavelengths, which penetrate dust more readily, which is why the galaxy is found to be unusually bright in the infrared
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 613 in the Sculptor - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 613 in Sculptor - Image of the barree spiral galaxy NGC 613 realized by the Very Large Telescope in December 2001. Unlike most barred spirals, this galaxy has multiple arms. It's assumed that a black hole sits in its center. Barred spiral galaxy NGC 613 obtained with the FORS1 and FORS2 multi - mode instruments (at VLT MELIPAL and YEPUN, respectively) on December 16 - 18, 2001. It is a composite of three exposures in different wavebands. Spiral galaxy NGC 3982 in the Great Bear - Spiral galaxy NGC 3982 in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy NGC 3982 is located about 68 million years ago - light from Earth. It extends over about 30,000 light years. It is a spiral galaxy that houses a black hole in its heart and large zones of star formation in its arms. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This face - on spiral galaxy, called NGC 3982, is striking for its rich tapestry of star birth, along with its winding arms. The arms are lined with pink star - forming regions of glowing hydrogen, newborn blue star clusters, and obscuring dust lanes that provide the raw material for future generations of stars. The bright nucleus is home to an older population of stars, which grow ever more densely packed towards the center. NGC 3982 is located about 68 million light - years away in the constellation Ursa Major. The galaxy spans about 30,000 light - years, one - third of the size of our Milky Way galaxy. This color image is composed of exposures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), and the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). The observations were taken between March 2000 and August 2009
