The Umbrella Galaxy (NGC 4651 or Arp 189) exhibits a jet like spear that's strikingly coherent and narrow. The structure was previously reported by Boris Vorontsov Velyaminov in 1959 but never interpreted as a stellar tidal stream. This deep image additionally shows a spectacular crescent shaped shell surrounding the east side of the star system that corresponds to the apocenter of the dwarf galaxy. Interestingly, a possible second arc on the western side of the galaxy can also be seen in this image. This feature is less obvious because it's partially hidden by the galaxy's disk and suggests we are observing a moderately inclined structure projected into the halo of NGC 4651. This image was produced by combining an hour of exposure through the Isaac Newton Telescope, located on the Spanish island of La Palma, with over 13 hours of imagery obtained with the 0.5 meter telescope at the Blackbird Observatory in New Mexico (USA). It is also the nearest of the giant radio galaxies, possessing an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and optically one of the most luminous galaxies in the sky. In 1949, NGC 5128 was found to be a loud source of radio energy, in fact the loudest radio source in its region of the sky (second overall to Cygnus A), earning it the designation Centarus A. As a radio galaxy it releases 1000 times the radio energy of the Milky Way in the form of large bi-directional radio lobes that extend some 800,000 light years into intergalactic space. The source of the radio emission is very compact, about 10 light days across and is believed to be a supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center with a total mass of 200 million to possibly one billion suns. As a radio galaxy, NGC 5128 belongs to the subgroup of galaxies called Active Galaxies, which include Quasars, Seyfert galaxies, Blazars and Radio Galaxies. Approximately 95 million light-years away, in the southern constellation of Octans (The Octant), lies NGC 7098 - an intriguing spiral galaxy with numerous sets of double features. The first of NGC 7098's double features is a duo of distinct ring-like structures that loop around the galaxy's hazy heart. This central region hosts a second double feature: a double bar. NGC 7098 has also developed features known as ansae, visible as small, bright streaks at each end of the central region. Ansae are visible areas of overdensity - they commonly take looping, linear, or circular shapes, and can be found at the extremities of planetary ring systems, in nebulous clouds, and, as is the case with NGC 7098, in parts of galaxies that are packed to the brim with stars. This image is formed from data gathered by the Focal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) instrument, installed on Eso's Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory. These aren't permanent structures: astronomers think that they slowly disperse over time, so that the galaxies eventually evolve into regular spirals. Astronomers used two methods to determine the distances to these objects. First, they measured how their light has been stretched in space due to the university's expansion. Then they measured how much the ultraviolet light from Mrk 205 dimmed as it passed through the interstellar gas of NGC 4319. <BR>The Hubble Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 image shows the inner region of NGC 4319. In addition to the galaxy's inner spiral arms, an outer arm is faintly visible at lower left. The unusually dark and misshapen dust lanes in the galaxy's inner region are evidence of a disturbance, probably caused by an earlier interaction with another galaxy, NGC 4291, which is not in the photograph. This is a common state for barred spirals, but the extra gravitational disruption that NGC 2146 is enduring no doubt exacerbates the situation, compressing hydrogen - rich nebulae and triggering stellar birth. Measuring about 80 000 light - years from end to end, NGC 2146 is slightly smaller than the Milky Way. It lies approximately 70 million light - years distant in the faint northern constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Although it is fairly easy to see with a moderate - sized telescope as a faint elongated blur of light it was not spotted until 1876 when the German astronomer Friedrich Winnecke found it visually using just a 16 cm telescope. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through a near - infrared filter (F814W, coloured blue and orange/brown) were combined with images taken in a filter that isolates the glow from hydrogen gas (F658N, coloured red).
