Carboniferous landscape - Calamites & Drepanophycus - Carboniferous landscape with calamites of different sizes and a variety of Drepanophycus, a smaller plant that appeared 20 million years ago, and coexisted with calamites for 35 million years. Calamites of varying size (10 to 50 feet tall) populate lowlands near the brackish waters of an inland sea. Closer to the ground at about 6 feet tall is a variety of Drepanophycus, ancient plants that preceded the Calamites by about 20 million years and coexisted with them for another 35 million years

Psittacosaurus and pond - The psittacosaur (Psittacosaurus) is a ceratopsian dinosaur from the early Cretace that lived in Asia about 130 to 100 million years ago. A Jurassic Psittacosaurus prepares to dine on a scrubland cycad 130 million years ago in what is today central Asia. Psittacosaurus was one of the earliest known ceratopsians, a family of horned, frilled dinosaurs that includes the better known Triceratops. Psittacosaurus was about 3 to 6 feet long and weighed 50 to 175 pounds, depending on species. At least one species had long, quill-like structures on its tail and lower back. With a parrot-like beak it is believed that Psittacosaurus was a plant-eater

Camptosaurus - Artist - Camptosaurus (or twisted lezard “”) was a genus of dinosaurs of the order of ornithisdogs. It was up to 6 m tall, weighed about 500 kg and lived in the upper Jurassic and lower cretace (about 160 to 140 million years ago) in England, France and the United States. In the sky fly two pterosaurs. Plant-eating ornithischian dinosaurs of the genus Camptosaurus graze in a forest of cycads and ferns 160 million years ago in what is today Wyoming. In the cloudy sky above a pair of pterosaurs soar by. Adult Camptosaurus grew to 26 feet long, nearly seven feet tall at the hip, and weighed over 1,500 pounds. These dinosaurs had sturdy beaks in addition to closely packed teeth which would have helped them to dine on tough Jurassic vegetation.

Cotylorhynchus - Cotylorhynchus was a large mammalian reptile (Synapside, Pelycosaur) living herbivorous from early Permian to mid-Permian (299 to 265 million years). They were the largest terrestrial animals of their time, measuring 6 metres long and weighing two tons. Giant, 20-foot-long and one-ton synapsids of the genus Cotylorhynchus forage in an Early Permian swamp 275 million years ago in what is today North America. Also in this image on the lower left is a 3-foot long lepospondyl amphibian of the genus Diplocaulus. Vegetation includes ferns and horsetails in the foreground and on the horizon is a forest of ginkgos. Cotylorhynchus is the largest known non-mammalian synapsid and was the largest land animal of its time. An herbivore, Cotylorhynchus had a massive barrel-shaped body and limbs with a relatively small head, making it perhaps one of the most unattractive land animals to have ever walked the Earth. Standing about 6 feet tall at the shoulder Cotylorhynchus probably had no predators; even the fierce Dimetrodon (also a synapsid) weighed little more than 300 pounds compared to Cotylorhynchus' 2,000
The First Trees on Earth - Artist View - First Trees - Artist view - 385 million years ago, in the upper Devonian, the first trees began to appear on Earth. In this illustration, the archaeopteris, considered the first tree, is present at different stages of its evolution, with on the left a young specimen of 6 metres, in the centre a tree twice as large, on the right, an even older specimen. At the extreme right, a strain of an old Archaeopteris collapse. 385 million years ago, near the end of the Devonian period, the first trees began to populate the Earth. Considered the first modern trees, the Archaeopteris were a part of the Earth's primitive forests for the next 25 million years. Unlike the trees we know today, Archaeopteris was in fact a primitive fern that reproduced by means of spores instead of seeds. While terrestrial plants had been around for 130 million years prior to Archaeopteris, this was the first plant to solve the biomechanical challenges of supporting and nurturing ever larger sizes, enabling these Archaeopteris to grow to heights of 70 feet and more, over twice the height of the Calamites. In this image, four stages of the life of the Archaeopteris are illustrated. On the far left nearest our vantage point is a young, 20 - foot Archaeopteris, and in the center at twice that height is a medium - aged Archaeopteris, and on the right is a fully mature specimen. Furthest right is the collapsed and decaying trunk of a mature tree, a contribution the biomassy that will eventually become the oil, coal and natural gas we exploit today
Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, on its left, is probably interacting with it. Image obtained with a 35 cm telescope, 6 hours of poses. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The galaxies are about 95 million light years distant. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 6 Hours of exposure

Remnants of the Supernova of Sails - The Vela Supernova Remnant - Remnant of the Supernova of Sails. The supernova exploded 12,000 years ago. The rest of the supernova is approximately 815 years away from Earth. Image obtained with FSQ 106 bezel, 6 hours of installation. About 120 centuries ago an inconspicuous star in what is now the constellation of Vela brightened by about 100 million times to rival the Moon as the brightest object in the night sky. This photograph shows a portion of the north - western quadrant of an expanding nebulous shell, which now surrounds the site of the explosion

Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - Irregular galaxy NGC 6822 in Sagittarius - The galaxy NGC 6822 is about 1.6 million years away - light from Earth. She belongs to our local group. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 12 hours of poses. The irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 is located at only 1,6 million light year. It is a member of our local group and the third nearest galaxy to the Milky Way after the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical and the Magellanic Clouds. The galaxy was discovered by Barnard in 1881 using a 6 inch refractor. It is very similar to the LMC with its weak bar and its irregular distribution of bright OB associations and HII regions. In 1925 in a classic paper, Edwin Hubble reported on several bright objects in NGC 6822, later found to represent a grouping of bright star clusters and HII regions. The galaxy is rich in neutral hydrogen gas, the essential fuel of star formation. NGC 6822 started forming stars some 10 billion years ago. Similar to the LMC it has a large intermediate age population of stars of about 3 billion years old, although the galaxy has picked up its star forming rate over the last 100 to 200 million years. Prominent HII regions and scattered clusters of young blue stars are testament to its current constant rate of star formation. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 12 Hours of exposure

Tanystropheus - Two Tanystropheus, six-metre-long marine reptiles, swim in a bay in China 230 million years ago. A pair of 20-foot-long, 300 pound reptiles of the genus Tanystropheus swim in an ocean bay 230 million years ago in what is today China. On the shore are a pair of 6-foot-long bipedal basal saurischian dinosaurs and beyond them on the horizon are 60-foot-tall araucarians, an ancient family of coniferous trees. Horsetails and ferns flourish near the water. Tanystropheus was not a dinosaur, rather it was an ancient marine reptile, an archosaur, that hunted ocean shores at a time when true dinosaurs were only making their first appearance on land. Tanystropheus was likely a fish-eater due to its long, narrow snout and sharp interlocking teeth typical of marine predators. Tanystropheus had an extraordinarily long neck, as long as its body and tail combined, though with only ten vertebrae it was likely not very flexible. Here Tanystropheus are shown extending their head and necks fully out of the water, which may have indeed been possible due to a heavy and muscular counter-balancing tail
Spiral galaxy of Sombrero M104 in the Virgin - The Sombrero galaxy (M104) in Virgo - The spiral galaxy M104 (NGC 4594, Sombrero galaxy) is located about 28 million years ago - light. Assembled 6 images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in May and June 2003. The “” Sombrero”” is located in the constellation Virgo. This magnificent galaxy is almost one - fifth the diameter of the full moon. The team used Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys to take six pictures of the galaxy and then stitched them together to create the final composite image. The photo reveals a myriad of stars in a pancake - shaped disk as well as a glowing central bulge of stars
Colorful Pentaceratops - The Pentaceratops lived 75 million years ago in the southwestern United States. Herbivore, it was 8 meters long and weighed 6 tons. The usefulness of his collar is not clearly defined. A protective shield against predators is a possibility, but relatively fragile, it is likely that it was used as an attribute of visual intimidation to rivals or to attract opposing sex. Although no pigment of colour has been preserved in the fossil remains, it is not unreasonable to imagine that these collars may have been very coloured. A six ton, 27 foot long Pentaceratops wonders a Cretaceous forest 75 million years ago in what is today the southwestern United States. Like the better known Triceratops, Pentaceratops was a Ceratopsid, a large four-legged plant-eating dinosaur characterized by beaks, rows of shearing teeth in the back of the jaw, and elaborate horns and frills. While they resemble defensive shields, the frills are in fact relatively fragile, suggesting that they may have served a purpose other than protecting against a brute force attack. One possibility is that the frills were employed as visual displays in order to intimidate rivals and attract the opposite sex. While no color pigmentation has been preserved in the fossil remains of Ceratopsids, it's not unreasonable to suggest that they may have been very colorful, like many reptiles and birds today
Star cluster M46 and planetary nebula NGC 2438 - Open cluster M46 and planetary nebula NGC 2438 - M46 (NGC 2437) is an age cluster located at 5400 years - light. It contains about 500 stars, 150 of which are brilliant. It is about 300 million years old. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 does not appear to belong to this cluster, and must be closer although its distance is unknown. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope The open cluster NGC 2437 (M46) has an angular diameter of almost half a degree and is quite beautiful in even quite a modest telescope. It has an integrated magnitude of about 6 and so is on the threshold of naked - eye visibility. The cluster is quite old as these things go, about 300 million light years. It is about 5000 light years distant, in the northern part of the constellation of Puppis. Although planetary nebula distances are notoriously difficult to measure, NGC 2438 seems to be in the foreground and is not connected to the cluster. Planetaries are in any case the result of the demise of an old, low mass stars and are thus not seen in relatively young open clusters
Open Cluster of Pleiades - The Pleiades star cluster - The Pleiades cluster is a cluster of about 500 young stars nees 150 million years ago. Visible in the constellation Taurus, this cluster is 440 years from the Earth. Object number 45 in Messier's catalog is the Pleiades, also know as the Seven Sisters for the seven stars that can be easily seen with excellent eyesight. The Pleiades is a relatively nearby open cluster, which according to new data from the Hipparcos satellite is located at a distance of 370 light years. The cluster is surrounded by blue nebulosity illuminated by the light reflected from the nearby stars. Astro - Physic's 130EDT F/8 Triplet Refractor working at f/6 two 20 minute exposures

Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - NGC 3372, Eta Carinae nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot massive stars, including the star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. This nebula is larger than the Great Nebula in Orion, but is not visible from most northern latitudes. It is a giant complex of emission and dark nebulae surrounding the unique variable star Eta Carinae, which scientists believe is the most massive and energetic star in the Milky Way galaxy. Located about 8,500 light years from the Earth, the star is about 100 times as massive as our own Sun, but produces 6 million times the light output. It was observed producing a remarkable burst of X - ray emissions that doubled its X - ray output in only four months. In the 1840's, Eta Carinae erupted visibly and was the second brightest star in the sky during this time

Elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in Persee - Elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in Perseus - This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope in 1995 shows a system of two colliding galaxies; in the foreground, a spiral galaxy seen almost from the edge, with many stars forming in the background, a giant, very bright elliptical galaxy, special because it has a spiral structure in its center. Its core probably houses a black hole. NGC 1275 is located about 230 million years ago - light; it belongs to the large cluster of galaxies of Persee. These images, taken with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), show traces of spiral structure accompanied by dramatic dust lanes and bright blue regions that mark areas of active star formation. Detailed observations of NGC 1275 indicate that the dusty material belongs to a spiral system seen nearly edge - on in the foreground. The second galaxy, lying beyond the first, is actually a giant elliptical with peculiar faint spiral structure in its nucleus. These galaxies are believed to be colliding at over 6 million miles per hour. NGC 1275 is about 230 million light - years away in the constellation Perseus. Embedded in the center of a large cluster of galaxies known as the Perseus Cluster, it is also known to emit a powerful signal at both X - ray and radio frequencies. The galaxy collision causes the gas and dust already existing in the central bright galaxy to swirl into the center of the object. The X - ray and radio emission indicates the probable existence of a black hole at the bright galaxy's center. While the dark dusty material in the Hubble image falls inward, NGC 1275 displays intricate filamentary structures at a much larger scale outside the image. This is a typical feature of bright cluster galaxies

NGC2170 is a common nebula imaged and yet with long exposures it takes on a whole new look. Many of the nebulae seen here appear to be uncataloged and not previously imaged. This image has been carefully processed to reveal the many faint and dusty nebulae in this region of Monoceros

M46 star cluster and planetary nebula NGC 2438 in the stern - Open Cluster M46 and Planetary Nebula NGC 2438 - M46 (NGC 2437) is a cluster of stars aged 5400 years - light. It contains about 500 stars, 150 of which are brilliant. It is about 300 million years old. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 does not appear to belong to this cluster, and must be closer although its distance is unknown. M46 is a rich open cluster that contains a real jewel, planetary nebula NGC 2438. At 6th magnitude, M46 contains about 100 bright stars, the brightest of which is magnitude 8.7. It is about one - half degree in apparent diameter, the same size as the full moon. It is estimated to be about 300 million years old. Planetary nebula NGC 2438 is about one arc minute in diameter and shines at 10th magnitude. A planetary nebula is a shell of gas puffed off by a star late in its life cycle. Three bright stars are visible inside of the nebula, although none of them are the true central star which shed the gas. The central star in NGC 2438 has a magnitude of 17.7, so the stars visible inside of the ring are members of the cluster M46, which lies behind the planetary nebula, but along the same line of sight. The true central star of NGC 2438 is probably more than a billion years old, another indication that it is not a member of the cluster. NGC 2438, discovered by William Herschel in 1786, is located at a distance of about 2,900 light years. M46 is located about 5,400 light years away and was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771. Both cluster and planetary nebula are located in the constellation of Puppis

Star field in the halo of the Andromede galaxy - Deep field image in the halo of Andromeda galaxy - Deep field in the halo of the Andromede galaxy obtained by the Hubble space telescope in 2003. 300,000 stars as well as thousands of background galaxies are visible. Astronomers using Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have reliably measured the age of the spherical halo of stars surrounding the neighboring Andromeda galaxy (M31). To their surprise, they have discovered that approximately one - third of the stars in Andromeda's halo formed only 6 to 8 billion years ago. That's a far cry from the 11 - to - 13 billion - year age of the stars in the Milky Way's halo. Why the difference in halo ages? Apparently, M31 must have gone through a major “” corporate merger”” with another large galaxy, or a series of mergers with smaller galaxies, billions of years ago. Astronomers cannot yet tell whether this was one tumultuous event or a more continual acquisition of smaller galaxies. The newly discovered younger stars in Andromeda's halo are richer in heavier elements than the stars in our Milky Way's halo, or in most of the small dwarf galaxies that surround the Milky Way. Indeed the level of chemical enrichment seen in these younger stars is characteristic of relatively massive galaxies, containing at least a billion stars. This suggests three possibilities: (1) Collisions destroyed the young disk of M31 and dispersed many of its stars into the halo; (2) a single collision destroyed a relatively massive invading galaxy and dispersed its stars and some of Andromeda's disk stars into the halo; and/or (3) many stars formed during the collision itself. Astronomers say it will take more detailed observations to unravel the acquisition history of these early cataclysmic events. Located only 2.5 million light - years away, the magnificent Andromeda galaxy, visible as a naked - eye spindle of light in the autumn sky has long been considered a near twin to our

Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of Phobos, the largest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its tiny satellite Phobos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from Phobos' surface. Phobos is over the low martian plains of Syrtis Major. Below the plains extending down to Mars' terminator and beyond is the heavily cratered Terra Sabaea. Clouds of water - ice crystals are forming at the terminator between light and dark. Looking more like a common potato than a celestial body, Phobos is actually the larger of Mars' two satellites, with a length of about 16 miles and about 11 miles across its smallest dimension. Phobos does not have enough mass for gravity to pull it into a uniform sphere like the larger satellites and planets in the Solar System. Phobos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity, orbiting a mere 5,800 miles above Mars' surface, making it the closest satellite to its host planet in the Solar System. Phobos' orbit is so low that it completes one revolution in less than eight hours, easily outpacing by threefold Mars' rotation period of 24 hours, 40 minutes. The resulting tidal forces are causing Phobos' altitude to decay at the relatively rapid rate of 6 feet per century; in about 50 million years Phobos will either crash into the martian surface, or be torn apart by Mars' gravity
