Star HD 209458 in Pegase - Star HD 209458 in Pegasus - This star, located in the center of the image, is about 150 years from Earth and is observable with a pair of binoculars. In orbit around this star, invisible in this image, we discovered a giant planet called Osiris (HD 209458b). This extrasolar planet of a new type is a hot Jupiter, a massive planet very close to its star. The star located in the center of this image is called HD 209458. It is similar to our Sun and lies 150 light - years from Earth. It is visible with binoculars as a seventh magnitude star in the constellation of Pegasus. In orbit around this star (but invisible on this picture) is an exoplanet named Osiris (HD 209458b). It is a hot jupiter, a giant planet orbiting very close to its star

Exoplanete WASP-12b: WASP-12b is a hot Jupiter-type exoplanet orbiting in 1.09 days around the star WASP-12, located about 870 light-years from the Sun, in the constellation of Coach. This planet is so close to its star that it is stretched by the maree forces of the latter so that it presents an ovoid shape and its atmosphere is little by little torn away by the star. WASP-12b is an extrasolar planet orbiting the star WASP-12, discovered by the SuperWasp planetary transit survey. Due to its extremely close orbit to its star, the star's tidal forces are distorting it into an egg shape and pulling away its atmosphere. The planet takes only a little over a day to orbit the star

Motion of the Star Proxima of Centauri - The proper motion of Proxima Centauri - Proxima of Centauri (in the center of the image) is the closest star to the Sun, located at a distance of 4.2 years - light. This star is a red dwarf, 10,000 times less luminous than our Sun, and is invisible to the naked eye. Its proximity makes it move quickly ahead of the other stars. This composite image made from three images taken in 1976 (blue), 1982 (red) and 1993 (green) shows the shift of the star in 17 years. Image obtained from the 1.2m Schmidt UK telescope of Siding Spring. Proxima Centauri is the nearest known star to the sun, at a distance of about 4.2 light years. It is an intrinsically faint red star, more than ten magnitudes (ten thousand times) fainter than the Sun. It is also much cooler, with a surface temperature of about 3100 C. Its visual (apparent) magnitude is eleven, so it is only visible with a good telescope, and only then from southern latitudes. Proxima is about one - tenth the mass of the sun, which accounts for its low surface temperature. It is possibly an outlying member of the triple alpha Centauri system just a few light days closer to us than the other, much brighter stars in the group. Because it is so close Proxima has a large 'proper motion', moving against the multitudes of background stars by 3.85 arc seconds a year, enough to carry it the width of the full Moon in about 500 years. The monochrome plates from which this 3 - colour picture were made were taken in 1976 (blue), 1982 (red) and 1993 (green) showing its movement over 17 years. M77 (NGC 1068) has an active core and houses a massive black hole. She is the object of intense star formation in her spiral arms. NGC 1068 is around 50 million years of light from Earth. Located about 60 million light years from Earth, towards the direction of the constellation named Cetus, is an enormous galaxy, much larger than our own, that is surrounded by a even larger cloud of obscuring dust. M77 (NGC 1068) has a powerful jet pouring copious amounts of material into inter - galactic space at enormous speed. This galaxy is a seyfert II type with an active nucleus. It is now believed that the source of this conmotion is a super - massive black hole, ten million times more massive than our Sun, in the process of absorbing material that has ventured too close. The brightest source on this image is Sirius B, a white dwarf star whose surface, heated at a temperature of 25,000 degres, emits huge X-rays. The other point is Sirius A, the brightest star in the sky in visible light, but practically non-existent in this wavelength. An X - ray image of the Sirius star system located 8.6 light years from Earth. This image shows two sources and a spike - like pattern due to the support structure for the transmission grating. The bright source is Sirius B, a white dwarf star that has a surface temperature of about 25,000 degrees Celsius which produces very low energy X - rays. The dim source at the position of Sirius A, a normal star more than twice as massive as the Sun, may be due to ultraviolet radiation from Sirius A leaking through the filter on the detector. In contrast, Sirius A is the brightest star in the northern sky when viewed with an optical telescope, while Sirius B is 10,000 times dimmer. Because the two stars are so close together Sirius B escaped detection until 1862 when Alvan Clark discovered it while testing one of the best optical telescopes in the world at that time. The Moon, Venus and Jupiter - Crescent Moon, Venus and Jupiter - The Moon and Planets Venus (bottom) and Jupiter (right) seen on 1 December 2008. Two satellites of Jupiter are also visible, Ganymede and Callisto. A beautiful conjunction between the crescent Moon with Earthshine, brilliant Venus, and mighty Jupiter is seen in the fading twilight on the first day of December, 2008. These images were shot with a simple zoom lens on a digital camera on a fixed tripod. The Moon, at magnitude -7.9, is a waxing crescent, 4 days old. The crescent is lit by the direct light of the Sun. The “” dark”” side of the Moon can also be seen, lit by Earthshine - sunlight reflected from the day side of the Earth. Jupiter, at right, shines at magnitude -2.0. Venus, at the bottom of the image, shines at magnitude -4.1. Above and to the right of Venus, two faint 6th magnitude stars in Sagittarius can be seen. Two of Jupiter's four Galilean moons can also be seen, one on each side of the planet. Ganymede, at magnitude 5.1 is the brightest and is to the upper left of Jupiter. Callisto, at magnitude 6.1 is to the lower right of the planet. Io and Europa are too close to the planet to be resolved in this image
Planetary nebula Helix (NGC 7293) in Aquarius - Planetary nebula Helix (NGC 7293) - This nebula is located 450 years - light from Earth. Image obtained by a 50 cm telescope, 42 poses of 15 minutes accumulated. Located in the constellation of Aquarius, the Helix is our closest planetary nebula at only 450 light years distance. It is so close that it can be telescopically seen shifting one side to the other in front of the more distant background stars as the earth moves around the sun - a phenomenon called parallax. Parallax measurements are used to trigonometrically deduce distance between an object in space and the earth. A planetary nebula results when a red giant star, near the ends of it's productive life, sheds its outer layers into space and creates a breathtaking shell of surrounding gas that early visual astronomers likened to the disks of planets. This planetary spans approximately 1.5 light years and is still expanding. The name associated with the Helix is derived from the cork - screw appearance that resulted from the spin induced by the nebula's central star as its outer layers were thrown off into the surrounding vacuum of space. This image of the Helix Nebula, photographed by R. Jay GabAny was the result of combining forty two, fifteen minute digital exposures taken during the month of September 2005, through a remotely controlled twenty inch Ritchey - Chretien telescope with an eleven mega - pixel camera at f/8. The remote observatory is located in Cloudcroft, New Mexico City, 7,000 feet above sea level in the Sacramento Mountains
Saturn seen at equinox - Saturn during Equinox - Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on August 12, 2009, 1.25 days after the exact date of Saturn equinox. The images that make up this mosaic were obtained at a distance of 847,000 km from the planet. Several satellites are visible in this image: Janus (lower left), Epimethee (lower middle), Pandora (on the right of the image, outside the rings) and Atlas (on the right, inside the F ring). Seen from our planet, the view of Saturn's rings during equinox is extremely foreshortened and limited. But in orbit around Saturn, Cassini spacecraft had no such problems. From 20 degrees above the ring plane, Cassini's wide angle camera shot 75 exposures in succession for this mosaic showing Saturn, its rings, and a few of its moons a day and a half after exact Saturn equinox, when the sun's disk was exactly overhead at the planet's equator. The novel illumination geometry that accompanies equinox lowers the sun's angle to the ring plane, significantly darkens the rings, and causes out - of - plane structures to look anomalously bright and to cast shadows across the rings. These scenes are possible only during the few months before and after Saturn's equinox which occurs only once in about 15 Earth years. Also at equinox, the shadows of the planet's expansive rings are compressed into a single, narrow band cast onto the planet as seen in this mosaic. The images comprising the mosaic, taken over about eight hours, were extensively processed before being joined together. At this time so close to equinox, illumination of the rings by sunlight reflected off the planet vastly dominates any meager sunlight falling on the rings. Hence, the half of the rings on the left illuminated by planetshine is, before processing, much brighter than the half of the rings on the right. Andromede Galaxy (M31) infrared view - The Andromeda galaxy seen in infrared - This image shows the difference in infrared radiation between the light emitted by the aged stars (blue) and that emitted by the dust (star-forming zone, yellow and red). This image obtained by the WISE satellite also distinguishes the two Andromede satellite galaxies, M32 (above the nucleus of the Andromede galaxy) and NGC 205 (M110) below. Infrared composite at the following wavelengths: 3.4 and 4.6 microns (blue), 12 microns (green), and 22 microns dust sensitive, red. M31, is captured in full in this new image from Nasa's Wide - field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE. The mosaic covers an area equivalent to more than 100 full moons, or five degrees across the sky. WISE used all four of its infrared detectors to capture this picture (3.4 - and 4.6 - micron light is colored blue; 12 - micron light is green; and 22 - micron light is red). Blue highlights mature stars, while yellow and red show dust heated by newborn, massive stars. Andromeda is the closest large galaxy to our Milky Way galaxy, and is located 2.5 million light - years from our sun. It is close enough for telescopes to spy the details of its ringed arms of new stars and hazy blue backbone of older stars. Also seen in the mosaic are two satellite galaxies, known as M32, located just a bit above Andromeda to the left of center, and the fuzzy blue M110, located below the center of the great spiral arms. These satellites are the largest of several that are gravitationally bound to Andromeda. The Andromeda galaxy is larger than our Milky Way and contains more stars, but the Milky Way is thought to perhaps have more mass due to its larger proportion of a mysterious substance called dark matter.
