The blood-red character, 'bao', means to respond or return. This is one of the four characters, jing zhong bao guo, which means, to serve the motherland with utmost loyalty. These four characters are inscribed on the walls of the memorial building above the spirit tablets of Kuomintang martyrs. There are altogether 360 tablets displaying all the names of those who are still remembered by their descendants. These are the most valuable historical evidence proving that every soldier had fought to his last breathing moment in the battlefield for the sake of his ideals. Chiang Rai, Thailand. In Thailand, there descendents have settled in the area of Baan Tam-Ngob, Chaiprakarn District, Doi Mae Salong, Chiang Rai Province. Today there are very few exiled Kuomintang soldiers still alive. A member of Kuomintang force, Qu Gochai, 60, is slowly gathering dried cabbage from the front yard of his house. He is plagued with parasites and many other diseases that he allows to eat away his life because he could not afford to get medical treatment. Last year, he saved up enough money and went to visit his mother and sister who still live in Lanchang District of Yunnan. He knows very well that he could never go home again. The last time he hugged his mother, neither of them were certain who would pass away first. Thailand. December 10, 2007.
