Field around the Nebula Henize 55 - The Henize 55 star forming region in the LMC - Henize 55 (NGC 2014), on the right, is a star-forming region located north of the Great Magellan Cloud. Image obtained from the 1.2m Schmidt UK telescope of Siding Spring. The nearby Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a very active star - forming galaxy. The most massive region of star formation is around 30 Doradus (the Tarantula nebula) which can be seen with the unaided eye, but hundreds of lesser examples are visible with a telescope. This picture shows one of the more intriguing, NGC 2014 (Henize 55), at right. It contains cluster of hot, young stars, almost hidden in the brightest part of the nebula. The energetic ultraviolet light from these stars is absorbed by hydrogen and produces the distinctive red glow from an enormous distance around the cluster. Barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 7098: The barree spiral galaxy NGC 7098 is located about 95 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the octant. Image obtained by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Approximately 95 million light-years away, in the southern constellation of Octans (The Octant), lies NGC 7098 - an intriguing spiral galaxy with numerous sets of double features. The first of NGC 7098's double features is a duo of distinct ring-like structures that loop around the galaxy's hazy heart. This central region hosts a second double feature: a double bar. NGC 7098 has also developed features known as ansae, visible as small, bright streaks at each end of the central region. Ansae are visible areas of overdensity - they commonly take looping, linear, or circular shapes, and can be found at the extremities of planetary ring systems, in nebulous clouds, and, as is the case with NGC 7098, in parts of galaxies that are packed to the brim with stars. This image is formed from data gathered by the Focal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) instrument, installed on Eso's Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory. Southern Crown Nebula - The Corona Australis nebula (NGC 6726 - 27 - 29) - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. It is located about 500 light years away from Earth. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This spectacular reflection nebula is the result of a few bright stars caught up in a large, dusty cloud. If that is all there was here, this region would be considered to be like the Pleiades, an accidental association of dust and stars. However, there are features here that show the dark cloud to be an active star forming nebula, though most of the action is hidden from view. The peculiar yellowish curved streak near the two bright reflection nebulae surround an intriguing object best seen in infrared light, R CRA, a young star still accreting interstellar material on to its surface. It seems to be the source of two compact but distinctly red patches which are Herbig - Haro objects, often the first visible signs of star formation occurring deep inside dark clouds. These compact nebulae are ejected from proto - stars during the later stages of star formation and sometimes appear in pairs, moving in opposite directions from the hidden star forming region. The R CRA complex is about 500 light years distant, one of the nearest star - forming regions — Southern Crown Nebula - The Corona Australis nebula (NGC 6726 - 27 - 29) - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. Open cluster NGC 4755 - Jewel Box - The Jewel Box star cluster - The NGC 4755 cluster is located in the constellation of the Southern Cross at a distance of 6400 years - light from Earth. The bright orange star on the top right is Kappa Crucis, a supergiant red star. This cluster contains about fifty stars formed about 16 million years ago. This close-up of the center of the cluster was obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. This image is a “” close - up 'view from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of NGC 4755, or the Jewel Box cluster. Several very bright, pale blue supergiant stars, a solitary ruby - red supergiant and a variety of other brilliantly coloured stars are visible in the image, as well as many much fainter ones, often with intriguing colours. The huge variety in brightness exists because the brighter stars are 15 to 20 times the mass of the Sun, while the dimmest stars are less than half the mass of the Sun. This is the first image of an open galactic cluster with imaging extending from the far ultraviolet to the near - infrared. NGC 4755 (Caldwell 94) is called the Jewel Box, based on John Herschel's comment in the 1830's that it looked like a superb piece of jewelry. There are about 50 stars in this cluster which formed some 14 million years ago. Most of the cluster members are blue giants which in a few million years will exhaust their hydrogen fuel and become red giants on their way to a cataclysmic end as supernovae.
