The landscape of Mars photographed by Curiosity Rover, 2012
This image shows where the Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity, landed on Meridiani Planum.
Mars Exploration Rover - Mars Exploration Rover is a Martian exploration mission composed of two probes housing two identical rovers, Spirit and Opportunity MER - A, the Spirit robot launched on June 10, 2003, landed on January 3, 2004 in the crater Gusev. MER - B, the Opportunity robot launched on July 8, 2003, landed on January 24, 2004 on Meridiani Planum. The sun rises behind one of the Mars Exploration Rovers as it prepares to analyse a rock with its RAT tool. Mars Exploration Rover (MER) is a robotic mission which aims to explore the Martian surface and geology. The mission began with the sending of two twin rovers: MER - A (Spirit), launched on June 10 2003 and landed on January 03 2004 in Gusev crater; MER - B (Opportunity) launched on July 08 2003 and landed on January 24 2004 at Meridiani Planum
ExoMars rover - Artist's view - Artist's view of the rover of the European mission ExoMars 2020. Artist's impression of the ExoMars rover and surface platform on the surface of Mars. The 2020 mission of the ExoMars programme will deliver a European rover and a Russian surface platform to the surface of Mars. A Proton rocket will be used to launch the mission, which will arrive at Mars after a nine-month journey. The rover will travel across the martian surface to search for signs of life. It will collect samples with a drill and analyse them in its onboard laboratory. ExoMars 2020 will be the first mission to combine the capability to move across the surface and to study Mars at depth. The surface platform, which is the responsibility of Roscosmos and the Space Research Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI), will remain stationary and will investigate the surface environment at the landing site. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, part of the 2016 ExoMars mission, will support communications

Mars Science Laboratory - Artist View - Mars Science Laboratory - Artist view - Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), named Curiosity, is a NASA rover that will explore the surface of Mars from 2012 onwards. In this artist's view, Curiosity analyses the chemical composition of a Martian rock using the ChECAM instrument. This artist's concept depicts the rover Curiosity, of Nasa's Mars Science Laboratory mission, as it uses its Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument to investigate the composition of a rock surface. ChemCam fires laser pulses at a target and views the resulting spark with a telescope and spectrometers to identify chemical elements. The laser is actually in an invisible infrared wavelength, but is shown here as visible red light for purposes of illustration
Mars Science Laboratory - Artist view - Mars Science Laboratory - Artist view - Artist view of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) probe, approaching the surface of Mars. In August 2012 this probe should deposit a rover named Curiosity on the surface of the planet Mars. This is an artist's concept of Nasa's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft approaching Mars. The Curiosity rover is safely tucked inside the spacecraft's aeroshell. The mission's approach phase begins 45 minutes before the spacecraft enters the Martian atmosphere. It lasts until the spacecraft enters the atmosphere. For navigation purposes, the atmospheric entry point is (2,188 miles (3,522 kilometers) above the center of the planet. This illustration depicts a scene after the spacecraft's cruise stage has been jettisoned, which will occur 10 minutes before atmospheric entry. The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft is being prepared for launch during Nov. 25 to Dec. 18, 2011. Landing on Mars is in early August 2012. In a prime mission lasting one Martian year (nearly two Earth years) researchers will use the rover's tools to study whether the landing region has had environmental conditions favorable for supporting microbial life and for preserving clues about whether life existed

Martian panorama taken by the rover Opportunity - Martian panorama seen from rover Opportunity - 360 degres panorama obtained by the rover Opportunity from the position where the rover remained for five weeks in November and December 2008. The 276 images that make up this panorama were taken from November 21 to 24, 2008. In this image the rover, whose top of its antenna can be seen in the center of the image, is located about 1 km southwest of the Victoria crater. Opportunity returned to Endeavour crater on December 23, 2008. The Rover Opportunity landed on Mars in the Meridiani Planum region on January 25, 2004. This 360 - degree panorama shows the vista from the location where Nasa's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity spent five weeks in November and December 2008 while the sun was almost directly in between Mars and Earth, limiting communications. Opportunity is approaching the fifth Earth - year anniversary of its landing on Mars, continuing a surface mission that was initially scheduled to last three months. The rover landed on Jan. 24, 2004 (Pacific Standard Time; Jan. 25, 2004 Universal Time). When it reached the location from which its panoramic camera (Pancam) captured this view, it had driven a total of 13,616 meters (8.46 miles) since its landing. The view combines 276 different exposures taken with Opportunity's panoramic camera (Pancam) - - 92 pointings, with three filters at each pointing. The component images were taken during the period from the rover's 1,716th Martian day, or sol, to the mission's Sol 1719 (Nov. 21 to 24, 2008). Opportunity has driven 1.83 kilometers (1.14 miles) since it exited Victoria Crater on Sol 1634 (Aug. 28, 2008). It skirted the west rim of Victoria and, at the point from which this panorama was taken, had reached a position about a kilometer (six - tenths of a mile) southwest of the south rim of the crater. North is in the center of the panorama. Rover tracks are visible from the drive to th
Mars - Gale Crater Region - Gale Crater area on planet Mars - View of the region of the impact crater Gale in which the Curiosity rover will be installed in 2012. This crater (in the top center of the picture) is 154 km in diameter. Image recomposed from data obtained by the Mars Global Surveyor probe. This computer - generated view depicts part of Mars at the boundary between darkness and daylight, with an area including Gale Crater beginning to catch morning light. Northward is to the left. Gale is the crater with a mound inside it near the center of the image. NASA has selected Gale as the landing site for the Mars Science Laboratory mission. The mission's rover will be placed on the ground in a northern portion of Gale crater in August 2012. Gale crater is 96 miles (154 kilometers) in diameter and holds a layered mountain rising about 3 miles (5 kilometers) above the crater floor. The intended landing site is at 4.5 degrees south latitude, 137.4 degrees east longitude. This view was created using three - dimensional information from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, which flew on Nasa's Mars Global Surveyor orbiter. The vertical dimension is not exaggerated. Color information is based on general March color characteristics

Mars surface seen by the rover Curiosity 04/2015 - Martian surface seen from the rover Curiosity 04/2015 - Panorama of the surface of Mars on Mount Sharp. Mosaic of images obtained by the rover Curiosity and his camera Mastcam on 10 and 11 April 2015. A southward - looking panorama combining images from both cameras of the Mast Camera (Mastcam) instrument on Nasa's Curiosity Mars Rover shows diverse geological textures on Mount Sharp. Three years after landing on Mars, the mission is investigating this layered mountain for evidence about changes in Martian environmental conditions, from an ancient time when conditions were favorable for microbial life to the much - drier present. Gravel and sand ripples fill the foreground, typical of terrains that Curiosity traversed to reach Mount Sharp from its landing site. Outcrops in the midfield are of two types: dust - covered, smooth bedrock that forms the base of the mountain, and sandstone ridges that shed boulders as they erode. Rounded buttes in the distance contain sulfate minerals, perhaps indicating a change in the availability of water when they formed. Some of the layering patterns on higher levels of Mount Sharp in the background are tilted at different angles than others, evidence of complicated relationships still to be deciphered. The scene spans from southeastward at left to southwestward at right. The component images were taken on April 10 and 11, 2015, the 952nd and 953rd Martian days (or sols) since the rover's landing on Mars on Aug. 6, 2012, UTC (Aug. 5, PDT). Images in the central part of the panorama are from Mastcam's right - eye camera, which is equipped with a 100 - millimeter - focal - length telephoto lens. Images used in outer portions, including the most remote portions of the mountain in the scene, were taken with Mastcam's left - eye camera, using a wider - angle, 34 - millimeter lens

This self-portrait is a composite of a dozen images taken by the robot on October 6, 2015. This self-portrait of Nasa's Curiosity Mars rover shows the vehicle at the “” Big Sky”” site, where its drill collected the mission's fifth taste of Mount Sharp. The scene combines dozens of images taken during the 1,126th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars (Oct. 6, 2015, PDT), by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The rock drilled at this site is sandstone in the Stimson geological unit inside Gale Crater. The view is centered toward the west-northwest. It does not include the rover's robotic arm, though the shadow of the arm is visible on the ground. Wrist motions and turret rotations on the arm allowed MAHLI to acquire the mosaic's component images. The arm was positioned out of the shot in the images, or portions of images, that were used in this mosaic. This portrait of the rover was designed to show the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument atop the rover appearing level. This causes the horizon to appear to tilt toward the left, but in reality it is fairly flat. For scale, the rod's wheels are 20 inches (50 centimeters) in diameter and about 16 inches (40 centimeters) wide. The drilled hole in the rock, appearing grey near the lower left corner of the image, is 0.63 inch (1.6 centimeters) in diameter
March: Victoria crater. - March: Victoria Crater at Meridiani Planum - View of the Victoria crater obtained by the HIRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance orbiter probe. This crater is 800 meters in diameter. The opportunity rover reached this crater on September 27, 2006. After exploring about a quarter of the crater's edges, the rover descended almost a year later to begin an exploration of the crater's interior. Victoria Crater, about 800 meters (one - half mile) in diameter, has been home ground for Nasa's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity for more 14 of the rover's first 46 months on Mars. Opportunity first reached the crater's rim on Sept. 27, 2006, during the 951st Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work in the Meridian Planum region of Mars. The rover then explored clockwise about one - fourth of the way around the rim before returning to a point close to its first overlook. On the mission's 1,293rd sol (Sept. 13, 2007), Opportunity began a sustained exploration of the interior of the crater, entering at an alcove called “” Duck Bay””” on the western side of Victoria.
