Space exploration: Soyuz spacecraft - Artist's view - Soyuz deep space explorer - A spaceship inhabits Soyuz TMA-M increases by a housing module for three astronauts and a rocket top floor, leaving Earth's orbit for a distant space exploration mission. A manned Soyuz TMA-M spacecraft docked with a three-person extended stay module leaving Earth orbit with the aid of a Russian-made upper stage booster rocket. This view is from behind upper stage booster with the Soyuz spacecraft at the far end and the extended stay module in the middle of the assembly
Space exploration: Soyuz spacecraft - Artist's view - Soyuz deep space explorer over the Moon - A spaceship inhabits Soyuz TMA-M increases by a housing module for three astronauts and a rocket top floor, joins the Moon. A manned Soyuz TMA-M spacecraft docked with a three-person extended stay module soars over the Moon with the aid of a Russian-made upper stage booster rocket. The upper stage booster is on the left with the Soyuz spacecraft on the right and the extended stay module in the middle of the assembly
Space exploration: Soyuz spacecraft - Artist's view - Soyuz deep space explorer bow - A spaceship inhabits Soyuz TMA-M increases by a housing module for three astronauts and a rocket top floor, leaving Earth orbit for a distant space exploration mission. A manned Soyuz TMA-M spacecraft docked with a three-person extended stay module begins to leave Earth orbit with the aid of a Russian-made upper stage booster rocket. This view is from behind the service module of the Soyuz spacecraft which would be the leading end of the assembly when the upper stage booster rocket is fired
Star sky on the Paranal observatory - Starry Sky above Paranal observatory - Spherical panorama of the star sky above the Paranal observatory in Chile. The lactee route crosses the sky accompanied by zodiacal light. May 2009. Milky Way is crossing Paranal sky and meeting with Zodiacal light to the West behind Paranal Observatory. Three of the most emblematic constellations are visible on the horizon: Orion, Big deeper and Scorpius. The Large and Small magellanic clouds are visible to the South together with Southern Cross, Eta Carina nebula and Coal sack. May 2009
The Orion MPVC module - Artist view - Artist view of the module lives Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. Artist's concept of the Orion Service Module. When the Orion spacecraft blasts off atop Nasa's Space Launch System rocket in 2017, attached will be the ESA - provided service module - the powerhouse that fuels and propels the Orion spacecraft. Orion will be the most advanced spacecraft ever designed and carry astronauts farther into space than ever before. It will sustain astronauts during space travel and provide safe re - entry from deep space and emergency abort capability. Orion will be launched by NASA's Space Launch System (SLS), a heavy - lift rocket that will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS will enable new missions of exploration and expand human presence across the solar system. The service module of the Orion spacecraft will provide support to the crew module from launch through separation prior to atmospheric re - entry
Dark Stars and Nebulae in Sagittarius - The Star Clouds of Sagittarius - Star Field towards the center of our galaxy. The bright star towards the center of the image is Gamma of Sagittarius. Image obtained from the 1.2m Schmidt UK telescope of Siding Spring. Orbiting round the centre of our Galaxy are found huge numbers of stars which are mostly faint, cool and often billions of years old. They are as ancient as the Galaxy itself. These stars are seen with the unaided eye as the hazy star clouds of the southern Milky Way, especially rich in Sagittarius. Our line of sight in this direction is strongly affected by dust, which reveals itself by both dimming the starlight passing through it and by selectively removing the blue light, changing the apparent colour to a deeper yellow. Though the colour change is only seen in photographs such as this, the dustiness of the Milky Way is obvious to the unaided eye. Near the centre of the picture is a region known as Baade's Window after the astronomer who selected this part of the Milky Way for special study

Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto - New Horizons over Pluto and Charon - Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto and its largest satellite Charon. The New Horizons probe was launched on 19 January 2006 to Jupiter, then Pluto and Charon, which it will reach in 2015 and Kuiper's objects in 2020. Nasa's New Horizons unmanned spacecraft over dwarf planet Pluto and its moon Charon. New Horizons has been en route to Pluto since its launch from Earth in 2006 and is scheduled to make its closest approach on 14 July 2015. New Horizons is about the size and shape of a grand piano and weighed 1,054 pounds at launch. The high - gain dish antenna is about 7 feet in diameter and is employed for communication with the Earth. In this image the New Horizons spacecraft is about 10,000 miles from Pluto (upper right), 22,000 miles from its largest moon Charon (upper left) and 2.97 billion miles from the Earth. Dominating this side of the spacecraft with an 8 inch aperture is the Long - Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), a digital camera with a large telephoto telescope fortified to operate in the cold, hostile environs of deep space. At 90 days before closest approach to Pluto, Lorri's images will surpass the quality of the best Hubble Space Telescope images of Pluto. While little is known about Pluto's appearance, here this Kuiper belt dwarf planet is realized as a frozen world covered with various ices, hosting a thin atmosphere of nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons too possibly, with a significantly weathered surface as Pluto's 248 - year orbit alternately brings it closer then further from the warmth of the sun
Space Exploration: Soyuz and Orion Ships - Artist's View - CEV-Soyuz Joint Mission - An American Orion ship mooring has a Soyuz TMA-M spaceship during a distant space exploration mission. Here, the ship is approaching a satellite stationed at a point in Lagrange. Illustration. An Orion class Crew Exploration Vehicle (AKA Deep Space Vehicle) is paired with a Soyuz TMA-M manned spacecraft for a joint deep space rendezvous with a satellite parked in a gravitationally stable Lagrangian point about 1 million miles beyond the orbit of the Earth's Moon. At this position, in this case a Lagrangian point 2, or L2, the Earth is between the spacecraft and the Sun resulting in the Earth eclipsing much of the Sun's light, however at this distance the Earth does not subtend an angle large enough to cover the entire disk of the Sun. What's visible of the Sun is a brilliant ring of light illuminating the spacecraft. (The streamers of light around the Sun are not the Sun's corona, but rather a way of illustrating the brilliance of the Sun's light as it may appear to the human eye.) The manned spacecraft is directing a spotlight on a hypothetical satellite in order to better examine it. The core of this satellite is protected from the Sun via an attached shade like its real-world L2 counterparts the Herschel and Planck Space Observatories, and the James Webb Space Telescope currently under construction
Space exploration: MPCV module - Artist view - The MPCV spacecraft in space - The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) above Earth. This capsule should be able to take a crew of six astronauts to an asteroid, the Moon or to take men to Mars. Here, the vehcule is connected to an additional housing module for a duration of more than three months, as well as to a module for extravehicular outputs. The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft project currently being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. Based on specifications and tests already performed for the Orion spacecraft. It was announced by NASA on 24 May 2011. An additional option for the Deep Space Vehicle (DSV) could be a module that attaches to the bow of the Extended Stay Module (ESM) and supports one or more Manned Maneuvering Vehicles (MMVs). An MMV would be a kind of hybrid between a space suit and small spacecraft permitting a single astronaut to maneuver independently of the DSV in the microgravity of orbit, deep space or near the surface of a small asteroid. The MMV would feature robotic arms controlled by the astronaut for collecting samples and deploying sensors. The MMV also offers the astronaut a panoramic view via a large spherical glass “” helmet”” (here covered to protect against micrometeorites during transit)

Ice on the Moon - Illustration - Lunar ice - Illustration - Artist's view of ice on the surface of a crater that remains perpetually in the shade of the Sun, near the poles. Water from an encounter with an icy comet has collected in the perpetual shade of a deep crater where the temperature is a constant - 380o F. In 1998, the unmanned Lunar Prospector probe discovered evidence for water ice on the surface of the moon. Some scientists believe that as much as 10 to 300 million tons of ice may reside at the moon's North and South poles. The source of the ice is thought to be from one or more comets that struck the moon's surface four billion years ago. (It is thought that Earth's water may have come from comets as well.) Unfortunately, the moon's small size and lack of an atmosphere caused it to lose almost all of its accumulated water to space. Any water that does remain on the moon would likely be on the poles, hidden in craters and depressions shaded from the Sun
Hubble deep field north - Hubble Deep Field North - North of the constellation of the Great Bear, the Hubble space telescope posed 75h to obtain this image of the distant universe. More than 1500 galaxies distant from 1 to 12 billion years - light are visible in this image. From Earth, the target field is the one “” that one would see through the eye of a needle held at arm's length.” If the distribution of galaxies over the entire Celestial vault were similar to this field, the number of galaxies observable up to magnitude 30 would be 50 billion. Representing a narrow “” keyhole”” view all the way to the visible horizon of the universe, the HDF image covers a speck of sky 1/30th the diameter of the full Moon. This is so narrow, just a few foreground stars in our Milky Way galaxy are visible and are vastly outnumbered by the menagerie of far more distant galaxies, some nearly as faint as 30th magnitude, or nearly four billion times fainter than the limits of human vision. Although the field is a very small sample of sky area it is considered representative of the typical distribution of galaxies in space because the universe, statistically, looks the same in all directions. The image was assembled from many separate exposures with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 for ten consecutive days between December 18 to 28, 1995
San Francisco Bay area view from space - San Francisco Bay area seen from space - San Francisco Bay area seen from space on April 17, 1998 from space shuttle Columbia. San Francisco Bay Area, California April 17, 1998. Considered one of the best natural harbors in the world, San Francisco Bay, with its various sediment patterns, can be seen in this unique near - vertical view. Surrounded by the San Francisco Metropolitan area to the west and southwest, the Berkeley and Oakland Metropolitan area to the east, and the San Jose Metropolitan (not visible on the image) to the southeast, San Francisco Bay is 50 miles (80 km) long and from 3 to 13 miles (5 to 21 km) wide. Waters of the Pacific Ocean (bottom of image) enter the bay through Golden Gate, a strait between two peninsulas. The world famous Golden Gate Bridge is discernible on the image connecting the two peninsulas. The bay is as deep as 100 feet (30 meters) in spots, with a channel 50 feet (15 meters) deep maintained through the sand bar off Golden Gate. The major transportation routes in all metropolitan areas are visible on this image. Also discernible is the San Mateo Bridge near the right center of the image. Just to the left of the center of the image is Treasure Island, an artificial island covering 400 acres (162 hectares). It was constructed as a site of the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939 - 1940) and became a United States Naval Base in 1941. The small white objects in the bay and entering the golden gate are ships
Exoplanete near a star at the end of life - A dying star sheds its outer layers - An artist's view of a star that, like the Sun at the end of life, turns into a red giant, and expels its upper layers into concentric circles, before becoming a white dwarf. In the foreground, an exoplanet distant from its star that sees its surface reheat. When a star like our sun nears the end of its life, it expands to more than 50 times its original diameter, becoming a red giant. Then over the next several tens of thousands of years the star episodically ejects its outer layers into space, sometimes producing concentric shells. These ejected layers eventually form a planetary nebula. What will subsequently remain of the star is a small, extremely hot core which cools off to become a white dwarf. In this image a red giant star expels its first of many shells of gas into space. In the years to come this spherical shell will grow outward, its circumference eventually expanding far beyond the orbit of this planet. As for this planet, being so far from its parent sun for most of its life has kept it in a deep, dark freeze for the past ten billion years (think Pluto). It has been during only the past 100 million years, when its sun first blossomed into a red giant, that this planet has experienced such light and warmth. This effluence is short - lived, however; in about another million years darkness and cold will again be the norm for this world
Nebula NGC 7023 in Cephee - NGC 7023 (The Iris Nebula) in Cepheus - The Iris Nebula (NGC 7023) is a reflexion nebula illuminated by the massive star HD 200775. The bright star HD 200775 shining through the nebula NGC 7023 is a 10 solar mass star centrally imbedded in a region surrounded by ambient molecular cloud material. Suns are born from vast clouds of dust and gas that gather in the dark places between the stars. Gravity causes these interstellar vapors to collapse inward until the pressure causes high enough temperatures at its center to fuse hydrogen, the university's basic building block, into helium - an event that also releases gamma - ray photons. These photons can take a million years to travel outward through the overlying matter until they reach the surface and escape into space as visible light. The push of the photon's rush to make an exit also stops the cloud's collapse and thus what began as thin gas and dust becomes a brilliant star illuminating the heavens and possibly warming near - by planets. This picture shows a place in deep space where these kinds of events have occurred. The brilliant star near the center of the picture is young and very hot - in relative terms, it was only recently created. The cloud from which it formed still surrounds this young Sun but is being blown away by the push of star's massive radiation. This picture shows the way it looked 1,300 years ago due to the distance that separates it from Earth and the speed that light travels
Lake Orumieh in Iran seen from space - Lake Urmia in Iran seen from space - Lake Orumieh is the largest lake in Iran. This dirty lake is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Image obtained from the International Space Station (ISS) on 23 August 2002. Lake Urmia is an isolated lake in Azerbaijan Province in northwest Iran. The total area of the lake is 1815 square miles (4700 square kilometers), and the north - south length is about 90 miles (145 kilometers). The maximum depth of the shallow, saline lake is approximately 50 feet (15 meters). Climatically, the lake region is located in a semiarid, almost desert environment, with general precipitation averaging 12 inches (30 centimeters) per year. Topographically, the entire region is either plateau or mountain. The surface of the lake is approximately 4100 feet (1250 meters) above sea level with several of the individual volcanic peaks reaching more than 7000 feet (2134 meters) above sea level. The massive, rugged mountain range west of the lake has ridges that exceed 11,000 feet (3353 meters) above sea level. The highly reflective area along the eastern shore of the lake appears to be either the development of salt deposits along the shoreline or the receding water level in the lake, which exposes more shoreline. Far Galaxies - Chandra Deep Field South - Distant Galaxies - GOODS Chandra Deep Field South - A myriad of distant galaxies, accompanied by a few stars of our Lactee Way, covers almost the entire picture. Some detected galaxies are a billion times weaker than the human eye can perceive without instrument. Many new galaxies are so distant that they appear to us as they were when the Universe was only two billion years old. The image was made by the Very Large Telescope and the 2.2m telescope of La Silla within the framework of the GOODS programme, an extensive programme of study of primordial galaxies conducted by different terrestrial and spatial observatories, in a field of the boreal constellation of the Great Bear and in a field of the southern hemisphere, as here in the constellation of the Furnace. November 2008. Obtained in part with the Very Large Telescope, the image contains more than 27 million pixels and is the result of 55 hours of observations with the VIMOS instrument. This patchwork image, with its myriad of brightly coloured galaxies, shows the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF - S), arguably the most observed and best studied region in the entire sky. The CDF - S is one of the two regions selected as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), an effort of the worldwide astronomical community that unites the deepest observations from ground - and space - based facilities at all wavelengths from X - ray to radio. Its primary purpose is to provide astronomers with the most sensitive census of the distant Universe to assist in their study of the formation and evolution of galaxies. The new image released in november 2008 combines data obtained with the VIMOS instrument in the U - and R - bands, as well as data obtained in the B - band with the Wide - Field Imager (WFI) attached to the 2.2 m MPG/ESO telescope at La Silla, in the framework of the GABODS surv

Lake Orumieh in Iran seen from space - Lake Urmia in Iran seen from space - Lake Orumieh is the largest lake in Iran. This dirty lake is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Image obtained by Space Shuttle Challenger in October 1984. The massive, rugged mountain range west of the lake has ridges that exceed 11,000 feet (3353 meters) above sea level. Agricultural patterns are visible in several delta areas around the lake (darker signatures). Sediment patterns can be seen along the southern end of the lake near the salt flats and the delta areas. The highly reflective area along the eastern shore of the lake appears to be either the development of salt deposits along the shoreline or the receding water level in the lake, which exposes more shoreline. The narrow linear features jutting into the lake from opposing shorelines (towards the middle of the lake) could not be identified, but appear to be manmade. Hubble deep field sud - Hubble deep field south - In the southern constellation of Toucan, the Hubble space telescope posed 75h to obtain this image of the distant universe. Thousands of galaxies away from 1 to 12 billion light years are visible in this image. From Earth, the target field is the one “” that one would see through the eye of a needle held at arm's length.” If the distribution of galaxies over the entire Celestial vault were similar to this field, the number of galaxies observable up to magnitude 30 would be 50 billion. This picture is the culmination of a 10 - day - long observation called the Hubble Deep Field South which was carried out in October 1998. This new “” far - look”” complements the original Hubble “” deep field””” taken in late 1995, when Hubble was aimed at a small patch of space near the Big Dipper. The new region is in the constellation Tucana, near the south celestial pole. Hubble's sharp vision allows astronomers to sort galaxy shapes. The image is dominated by beautiful pinwheel - shaped disk galaxies, which are like our Milky Way. The picture also contains a variety of peculiar - shaped galaxies that are in collision with companion galaxies. Elliptical galaxies appear as reddish blobs. A sprinkling of foreground stars (belonging to our Milky Way) appear as bright points with “” diffraction spikes”” an artifact of all telescope optics. The colors in the pictures are a natural representation of the galaxies' stellar populations. Blue corresponds to young hot stars. Red may indicate older stars, starlight scattered by dust, or very distant starlight that has been stretched to redder wavelengths by the university's expansion

Great Lakes of Africa seen from space - Great lakes of Africa seen from space - Great Lakes of Africa in East Africa in the Great Rift Valley. Lake Victoria is visible in the top center of the picture. Above Lake Victoria, Kyoga Lake. Upper left is Lake Albert, 160 km long. Below, Lake Edward, then Lake Kivu, and at the bottom left, Lake Tanganyka, which stretches for about 670 km. Image obtained by ENVISAT satellite on 6 October 2008. This Envisat image highlights lakes in the Western Rift of the Great Rift Valley, a geological fault system of Southwest Asia and East Africa. The series of lakes in and around the Great Rift Valley are referred to as the Great Lakes of Africa. Lake Victoria (visible in the top centre) is the largest of all African lakes and is the second widest freshwater body in the world. The lake straddles three countries; the northern half sits in Uganda, the southern half in Tanzania and a portion of its north - eastern section is in Kenya. The oblong - shaped lake visible in the bottom left is Tanganyika. With a length of approximately 670 km, it is the world's longest freshwater lake. With a maximum depth of 1470 m and an area of 32,900 km, Tanganyika is the second deepest and the fifth largest lake on the planet. Its long surface belongs to four countries; the north - eastern tip to Burundi, the majority of the eastern side to Tanzania, the majority of the western portion to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the southern tip to Zambia. The lake above Victoria is Kyoga, which is a part of the Great Lakes system but is not considered a Great Lake. Lake Albert, the northernmost of the chain of lakes in the Great Rift Valley, is visible in the top left. With a length of about 160 km, a width of 30 km and a maximum depth of 51 m, it is Africa's seventh largest lake. Lake Albert, Lake Edward (visible beneath Albert) and Lake Kivu (beneath Edward) all run along the eastern border of the DRC (lush green
