Star T - Tauri in Orion - Bow Shock around T - Tauri Star in the Orion Nebula - LL Ori is a star T - Tauri located about 1500 years ago - light from Earth in Orion's nebula. This young star emits a powerful stellar wind that hits the surrounding gas creating an arc-shaped shock wave Image obtained by the Hubble space telescope in February 1995. A bow shock can be created in space when two streams of gas collide. The star LL Ori emits a vigorous solar wind, a stream of charged particles moving rapidly outward from the star. Our own Sun has a less energetic version of this wind that is responsible for auroral displays on the Earth. The material in the fast wind from LL Ori collides with slow - moving gas evaporating away from the center of the Orion Nebula, which is located to the lower right in this Heritage image. The surface where the two winds collide is the crescent - shaped bow shock seen in the image. Unlike a water wave made by a ship, this interstellar bow shock is a three - dimensional structure. The filamentary emission has a very distinct boundary on the side facing away from LL Ori, but is diffuse on the side closest to the star, a characteristic common to many bow shocks. A second, fainter bow shock can be seen around a star near the upper right - hand corner of the image. Astronomers have identified numerous shock fronts in this complex star - forming region and are using this data to understand the many complex phenomena associated with the birth of stars. This image was taken in February 1995 as part of the Hubble Orion Nebula mosaic. A close visitor in our Milky Way galaxy, the nebula is only 1,500 light - years from Earth. The filters used in this color composite represent oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen emissions
Spiral galaxy NGC 908 in the Whale - Spiral galaxy NGC 908 in Cetus - NGC 908 is about 65 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy undergoes a star-forming flames; clusters of young and massive stars are visible in the spiral arms. It is 75,000 years long - light years long and its shape suggests that it is subject to the gravitational influence of another galaxy yet unidentified. NGC 908 is a starburst galaxy, one that is undergoing a period of intense star formation. This is why it has numerous clumps of bright stars in its spiral arms and appears so bright on this photograph. It is also asymmetrical, with a peculiar split in the spiral arm on the left (eastern) side of the galaxy. Both these characteristics usually mean the galaxy has been disturbed by some massive intruder, usually another galaxy, but none is evident on the photograph or in the wider field around NGC 908

Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1398 in the Furnace: The galaxy NGC 1398 is located at a distance of about 65 million light years. Image obtained by the VLT telescope. This galaxy is located in the constellation of Fornax (The Furnace), approximately 65 million light-years away. This image comprises data gathered by the Focal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) instrument, mounted on Eso's Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory, Chile. It shows NGC 1398 in striking detail, from the dark lanes of dust mottling its spiral arms, through to the pin-hued star-forming regions sprinkled throughout its outer regions.
Galaxy NGC 660 in Pisces - Galaxy NGC 660 in Pisces - The galaxy NGC 660 is located about 20 million light years ago in the constellation Pisces. It is a polar ring galaxy, a fairly rare type of galaxy that features a ring of gas and dust almost perpendicular to the main galactic plane. Image of the central part of the galaxy obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 660 is described as being a “” polar ring””” galaxy. The central region of this galaxy is considered a “” starburst”” due to the extreme amount of luminous star formation. This galaxy is estimated to be 24 million light years away. Image taken with the Hubble space telescope (HST)
Nebula Sh2 - 106 in the Swan - Sh2 - 106 nebula in Cygnus - Sharpless 106 (Sh2 - 106) is a star-forming region in the constellation Swan. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The bipolar star - forming region, called Sharpless 2 - 106, or S106 for short, looks like a soaring, celestial snow angel. The outstretched “” wings”” of the nebula record the contrasting imprint of heat and motion against the backdrop of a colder medium. Twin lobes of super - hot gas, glowing blue in this image, stretch outward from the central star. This hot gas creates the “” wings”” of our angel. A ring of dust and gas orbiting the star acts like a belt, cinching the expanding nebula into an “” hourglass”” shape

Spiral Galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - Spiral galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - NGC 253 is the brightest galaxy of the Sculptor's group, the closest galaxy group to the Local Group. It is about 10 million light years away. Image obtained with a 50 cm telescope, composite of several poses. NGC 253 is a spectacular starburst spiral galaxy that is choked with dust. Located about 8 million light years away in the constellation of Sculptor, it is the nearest starburst galaxy to our own Milky Way galaxy. It is called a “” starburst””” galaxy because of the extremely high rate of star formation taking place in its core. Although located at a fairly low declination for northern hemisphere observers, NGC 253 is easily visible in binoculars, and is an amazing sight in a large telescope
Spiral Galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - Spiral galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - NGC 253 is the brightest galaxy of the Sculptor's group, the closest galaxy group to the Local Group. It is about 12 million light years away. Image made with the 1.5m Danish telescope of La Silla in Chile in 2009. NGC 253 is a spiral galaxy (about 12 million light years away), a member of a small group straggling across the southern constellation of Sculptor. It appears elongated because we see it almost edge - on. NGC 253 is a prototypical starburst galaxy. This galaxy is also one of the dustiest galaxies known and much of its internal detail is hidden by obscuring matter which can be seen as dark patches against the background stars. Despite the obscuration, two spiral arms and many bluish clusters of stars can be seen around the edge of the galaxy. NGC 253 is so close to us that some of the brightest stars are apparent as individuals within the spiral arms. Image taken with the ESO/Danish 1.5m telescope at La Silla observatory in Chile

Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, at the bottom of the picture, is probably interacting with it. Image obtained with a 50 cm telescope, composite of several poses. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The slightly bluish colour of parts of the fainter galaxy is suggestive of star formation, probably triggered by the interaction. Encounters between galaxies such as this are common, and often lead to them merging into a single entity. It is likely that the dust lane of NGC 5078 is the remnant of a dusty spiral which fell into it long ago. The galaxies are about 95 million light years distant
Open cluster NGC 6939 and galaxy NGC 6946 - Spiral galaxy NGC 6946 and open cluster NGC 6939 - The spiral galaxy NGC 6946 is located about 10 million years ago - light in Cephee. Many star formations are observed here. The cluster of stars NGC 6939, on the right, belongs to our galaxy. Spiral Galaxy NGC 6946 and Open Cluster NGC 6939 are located about 2 degrees southwest of Eta Cepheus. 6946 is a 9.7 magnitude spiral galaxy that was discovered by William Herschel on September 9, 1798 and is about 10 arc minutes in diameter. It is a relatively close galaxy at a distance of about 10 million light years, and was once suspected by Edwin Hubble of being a member of the Local Group of galaxies that includes the Milky Way, but today it is not believed to be a member. Because we are looking at it through the plane of our own galaxy, it is highly obscured by dust. NGC 6946 is sometimes called the Fireworks galaxy because of the number of supernovae that have been discovered there and the galaxy's prodigious rate of star formation. By contrast, open cluster NGC 6939, seen about 40 arc minutes northwest of NGC 6946, is located inside of our own galaxy at a distance of approximately 36 light years. It is just by coincidence that these two objects lie close to each other in the same line of sight
Spiral galaxy NGC 1313 in the Reticule - The starburst galaxy NGC 1313 - NGC 1313 is a galaxy located about 15 million years ago - light. Intense star formations are observed. In visible light, NGC 1313 seems dominated by scattered patches of star formation which give our picture a rather ragged appearance. The clouds of bluish stars seem to have burst into existence at random, without the normal trigger gravitational interaction or even a distinct spiral to prompt them. Star formation seems to have occurred in a series of irregular, self-sustaining bursts. However, a very deep image shows that the outer parts of galaxy are also very disturbed. Seen with a radio telescope, the galaxy is rich in hydrogen, the raw material of stars, and the gas circulates around the centre of the galaxy in a well ordered way, apparently hardly affected by the starburst activity or other irregularities that so colour our visual impression of this unusual galaxy. NGC 1313 is at a distance of about 15 million light years, close enough for some of its brightest stars to be seen as individuals
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1483 in Dorado - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1483 in Dorado - NGC 1483 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 60 million years ago - light in the southern constellation of Dorado. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 1483 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the southern constellation of Dorado. The nebulous galaxy features a bright central bulge and diffuse arms with distinct star - forming regions. In the background, many other distant galaxies can be seen. The constellation Dorado is home to the Dorado Group of galaxies, a loose group comprising an estimated 70 galaxies and located some 62 million light - years away. The Dorado group is much larger than the Local Group that includes the Milky Way (and which contains around 30 galaxies) and approaches the size of a galaxy cluster. Galaxy clusters are the largest groupings of galaxies (and indeed the largest structures of any type) in the Universe to be held together by their gravity. Barred spiral galaxies are so named because of the prominent bar - shaped structures found in their center. They form about two thirds of all spiral galaxies, including the Milky Way. Recent studies suggest that bars may be a common stage in the formation of spiral galaxies, and may indicate that a galaxy has reached full maturity. Image taken with the Hubble space telescope (HST)
Spiral galaxy NGC 3621 in Hydra - Galaxy NGC 3621 in Hydra - The spiral galaxy NGC 3621 is located about 22 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Hydra. Image obtained from the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope of the La Silla Observatory. Spiral galaxy NGC 3621 is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 22 million light years from the sun. Image taken with the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at Eso's La Silla Observatory in Chile. This galaxy appears to be a fine example of a classical spiral but it is in fact rather unusual: it does not have a central bulge and is therefore described as a pure - disc galaxy
Spiral Galaxy M83 in Hydra - Spiral galaxy M83 in Hydra - The galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) is located about 15 million years away from Earth. This galaxy is intermediate between a classic spiral and a barree spiral. Image obtained with a 35 cm telescope, 11 hours of cumulative poses. M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 million light years from the sun. It is classified as intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 11 Hours of exposure

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in the Giraffe - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in Camelopardalis - NGC 2146 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 70 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Giraffe (Camelopardalis). Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 2146 is classified as a barred spiral due to its shape, but the most distinctive feature is the dusty spiral arm that has looped in front of the galaxy's core as seen from our perspective. The forces required to pull this structure out of its natural shape and twist it up to 45 degrees are colossal. The most likely explanation is that a neighbouring galaxy is gravitationally perturbing it and distorting the orbits of many of NGC 2146's stars. It is probable that we are currently witnessing the end stages of a process which has been occurring for tens of millions of years. NCG 2146 is undergoing intense bouts of star formation, to such an extent that it is referred to as a starburst galaxy. This is a common state for barred spirals, but the extra gravitational disruption that NGC 2146 is enduring no doubt exacerbates the situation, compressing hydrogen - rich nebulae and triggering stellar birth. Measuring about 80 000 light - years from end to end, NGC 2146 is slightly smaller than the Milky Way. It lies approximately 70 million light - years distant in the faint northern constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Although it is fairly easy to see with a moderate - sized telescope as a faint elongated blur of light it was not spotted until 1876 when the German astronomer Friedrich Winnecke found it visually using just a 16 cm telescope. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through a near - infrared filter (F814W, coloured blue and orange/brown) were combined with images taken in a filter that isolates the glow from hydrogen gas (F658N, coloured red). Dark Nebula in Scorpio - A dark cloud in Scorpius, wide field - This dark nebula is located about 5000 years from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This curious un - named nebula is governed by radiation from very luminous stars some distance from the nebula. The direction of the radiation source can be seen from the flow pattern in the dark cloud and the extensive bright red rims at the end of the nebula that is exposed to radiation from the hot stars. This part of the nebula is reminiscent of the famous Horsehead nebula in Orion, which is also the consequence of starlight destroying a dark cloud. The source of the energy here is the Scorpius OB association, a group of brilliant, very hot stars, about 5000 light years away from us
Spiral Galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - Spiral galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - NGC 253 is the brightest galaxy of the Sculptor's group, the closest galaxy group to the Local Group. It is about 13 million light years away. Image obtained with the 2,2m MPG/ESO telescope of La Silla. Measuring 70 000 light - years across and lying 13 million light - years away, the nearly edge - on spiral galaxy NGC 253 is revealed here in an image from the Wide Field Imager (WFI) of the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope at the La Silla Observatory. The image is based on data obtained through four different filters (R, V, H - alpha and OIII). North is up and East to the left. The field of view is 30 arcminutes
Spiral galaxy ESO 269 - 57 in Centaurus - Galaxy ESO 269 - 57 in Centaurus - The spiral galaxy ESO 269 - 57 is about 155 million years away - light from Earth. The picture shows the complex structure of ESO 269 - 57, with an inner “” ring””, of several tightly wound spiral arms, surrounded by two outer ones that appear to split into several branches. Many blue and diffuse objects are visible - most are star - forming regions. The galaxy type is Sa (r) and its distance is about 155 million light - years. It extends over about 4 arcmin in the sky, corresponding to almost 200,000 light - years across. Many other galaxies are visible in the background. This three - colour composite was obtained with VLT ANTU and FORS1 in the morning of March 27, 1999
Galaxy ESO 77 - 14 - Galaxy ESO 77 - 14 - The galaxy ESO 77 - 14 is about 550 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the Indian. This system consists of two interacting galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on August 17, 2001. This image of ESO 77 - 14 is a stunning snapshot of a celestial dance performed by a pair of similar sized galaxies. Two clear signatures of the gravitational tug of war between the galaxies are the bridge of material that connects them and the disruption of their main bodies. The galaxy on the right has a long, bluish arm while its companion has a shorter, redder arm. This interacting pair is in the constellation of Indus, the Indian, some 550 million light - years away from Earth. The dust lanes between the two galaxy centers show the extent of the distortion to the originally flat disks that have been pulled into three - dimensional shapes. This nebula houses very young stars, aged less than a million years old. NGC 7129 is a star forming region located in Cepheus constellation, 3300 light years from us. Several Herbig Haro objects are visible in this nebula. Herbig - Haro objects are small emission nebulae found around young developing stars (protostars) and which are believed to be transient in their nature, for they only exist for a few thousand years
Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, on its left, is probably interacting with it. Image obtained with a 35 cm telescope, 6 hours of poses. Scenario of a star formation - In a cloud of gas and interstellar dust, a blood cell contracts and heats. The blood cell flattens in a disc around the young star. The star starts to shine. In a cloud of gaz and interstellar dust a dark globule will contract to create a rotating disk flattening; at the center of this disk, the stars ingnites
Galaxy NGC 4027 in the Raven - Galaxy NGC 4027 in Corvus - NGC 4027 is a spiral galaxy located about 80 million years ago - light. One of his arms is more extended, probably by the presence of a nearby dwarf galaxy. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This galaxy is of interest because of its similarity to the Large Magellanic Cloud, (LMC) our nearest extra - galactic neighbour. Like the LMC, its light comes predominantly from young stars, which are hotter than the Sun and give the galaxy a bluish colour. However, because this galaxy is over 80 million light - years distant we see only the integrated light of millions of unresolved stars, rather than the individuals we see in the LMC. NGC 4027 has a somewhat distorted appearance and an elongated spiral arm, probably due to the gravitational effect of a smaller companion galaxy, not visible in this photograph but rather obvious on a much deeper image. NGC 4027 is less than half a degree south of the Antennae interacting galaxies
Spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor - Galaxy NGC 300 in Sculptor - Located about 7 million years ago - light from Earth, the spiral galaxy NGC 300 belongs to the Sculptor's group. It appears to us as a great object in the sky since its apparent diameter is almost that of the full moon. This photo made by the Hubble space telesope in 2002 shows the central part of the galaxy and reveals myriad stars. NGC 300 is a spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way galaxy. It is a member of a nearby group of galaxies known as the Sculptor group, named for the southern constellation where the group can be found. The distance to NGC 300 is 6.5 million light - years, making it one of the Milky Way's closer neighbors. At this distance, only the brightest stars can be picked out from ground - based images. With a resolution some 10 times better than ground - based telescopes, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) resolves many more stars in this galaxy than can be detected from the ground
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2903 in the Lion - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2903 in Leo - The barree spiral galaxy Ngc 2903 is located 25 million years - light and extends over 80,000 years - light. It is home to regions of intense star formations. This extremely detailed picture was obtained in February 2007 thanks to 21 hours of combined poses with a 50 cm telescope. The barred spiral galaxy NGC 2903 is located about 25 million light - years away in the direction of the constellation Leo and its width is roughly 80,000 light - years from edge to edge. NGC 2903 is known to contain numerous hot spots of violent stellar activity. The picture represents almost 21 hours of total exposure through a 20 inch telescope
Irregular Galaxy M82 in the Great Bear - The irregular galaxy M82 in Ursa Major - M82 is an irregular galaxy distant about 12 million years - light of the Earth. Its nucleus, which appears to have suffered from the passage of the neighbouring galaxy M81, is in a phase of violent star activity. Its central regions are rich in star formation. M82 is a prototypical irregular type galaxy located 12 million light years away in Ursa Major constellation. M82 is also the closest starburst galaxy to the Milky Way. As a starburst galaxy M82 shows a rate of star formation 10 times greater than our galaxy. Conditions for the starburst activity were believed triggered by a past close encounter with M81 between 300 and 600 million years ago
Star Formation in Cassiopee - Star Formation in Cassiopeia - This star-forming region, called W5, is located approximately 6500 light years ago in the constellation Cassiopee. Several generations of stars appear on this cliche; the older ones are the blue stars in the centre of the two cavities; the younger stars are grouped at the edges of these cavities and at the ends of the gas pillars or they appear like pink dots; the white areas are home to the very young stars in formation. In this infrared image, heated dust appears in red, dense gas clouds appear in green. Composite image obtained by the Spitzer space telescope in 2006 and 2007. Generations of stars can be seen in this infrared portrait from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope. In this wispy star - forming region, called W5, the oldest stars can be seen as blue dots in the centers of the two hollow cavities (other blue dots are background and foreground stars not associated with the region). Younger stars line the rims of the cavities, and some can be seen as pink dots at the tips of the elephant - trunk - like pillars. The white knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. Red shows heated dust that pervades the region's cavities, while green highlights dense clouds. W5 spans an area of sky equivalent to four full moons and is about 6,500 light - years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. The Spitzer picture was taken over a period of 24 hours. Like other massive star - forming regions, such as Orion and Carina, W5 contains large cavities that were carved out by radiation and winds from the region's most massive stars. According to the theory of triggered star - formation, the carving out of these cavities pushes gas together, causing it to ignite into successive generations of new stars. This image contains some of the best evidence yet for the triggered star - formation theory. Scientists analyzing the photo have been able to sho
Nebula Van den Bergh 93 (VdB 93) in Unicorn - Nebula Van den Bergh 93 (VdB 93) - VDB 93 is a star-forming region belonging to nebula IC 2177. The star SAO 152320, in the center of the image, illuminates this nebula located in the constellation Unicorn, about 4000 years old - light from Earth. Curtains of gas and dust dramatically open here to reveal the inner region of this starforming region. Unceremoniously named, bright star SAO 152320 shines with intense light in the center of this field. Clouds of gas glow strongly and dust shrinks quickly under its radiative prowess. This vista lies some 4,000 light years away towards the constellation of Monoceros. This is a portion of a much larger nebula called Gum 1
Nebula M43 in Orion - M43 nebula in Orion - Nebula M43 (NGC 1982) is part of the great Nebula of Orion (M42), a vast region of star formation. This image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) shows a detail of the nebula people of bright young stars accompanied by very young stars still surrounded by their cocoon of dust. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has taken a close - up view of an outer part of the Orion Nebula's little brother, Messier 43. This nebula, which is sometimes referred to as De Mairan's Nebula after its discoverer, is separated from the famous Orion Nebula (Messier 42) by only a dark lane of dust. Both nebulae are part of the massive stellar nursery called the Orion molecular cloud complex, which includes several other nebulae, such as the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024). This view shows several of the brilliant hot young stars in this less - studied region and it also reveals many of the curious features around even younger stars that are still cocooned by dust. This picture was created from images taken using the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through yellow (F555W, coloured blue) and near - infrared (F814W, coloured red) filters were combined. The exposure times were 1000 s per filter and the field of view is about 3.3 arcminutes across
Nebula NGC 2170 in Unicorn - Nebula NGC 2170 in Monoceros - Nebula by reflexion located in the constellation Unicorn. This rich collection of predominantly reflection and sparse emission nebulosity exists in the western part of a vast star forming region known as the Mon R 2 association. The “” R”” designation stands for reflection and indicates an association of stars illuminating reflection nebulae. Most of the members of Mon R 2 are type B stars located along an east - west line stretching across 2 degrees of the winter sky, situated about 8 degrees east of the Orion Nebula. The Mon R 2 association resides at a distance of 830 pc and formed about 6 to 10 million years ago along the edge of the Mon R2 molecular cloud
Cometary blood cell CG4 in the stern - CG4, a cometary blood cell in Puppis - Cometary blood cells are small clouds of isolated gases. The latter, called CG4, is located about 1300 light years ago in the constellation of Pupus. Its head is 1.5 years light and its tail extends for 8 years. This cloud is a star-forming region. A spiral galaxy seen by the slice (ESO 257 - 19) is visible at the top left. It is located 100 million years later. The odd looking “” creature”” to the right of center in the above photo is a gas cloud known as a cometary globule. This globule, however, has ruptured. Cometary globules are typically characterized by dusty heads and elongated tails. These features cause cometary globules to have visual similarities to comets, but in reality they are very much different. Cometary globules are frequently the birthplaces of stars, and many show very young stars in their heads. The reason for the rupture in the head of this object is not completely known. The galaxy to the left of center is very far in the distance and is only placed near CG4 by chance superposition
Nebula NGC 6334 in the Scorpion - The 'reddened' nebulosity of NGC 6334 - The nebula NGC 6334 is located about 5500 years - light from Earth. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. The star - forming nebula NGC 6334 shows no evidence of a blue component in their colour - indeed, the blue - light plate used in these 3 - colour pictures had no nebulous image at all - nor is there any obvious sign of the bright blue stars normally found in these objects. They are excellent examples of the phenomenon known as 'interstellar reddening', the selective removal of blue light by minute particles of dust in the line of sight. This accounts for both the ruddy hue and apparent absence of blue stars. The hot stars are present but only some of the red part of their light is seen so they are not conspicuous. This nebula is quite nearby (5500 light years) but located close to the Galactic plane and are buried in the dust of the Milky Way. Careful measurement of the colour of stars associated with the nebula indicate that they are dimmed by a factor of about 10 in the green part of the spectrum, much more in the blue, but relatively little at red wavelengths. Some care has been taken to ensure that these images are as close to true - colour as possible

Star Birth in Scorpio - Stellar nursery in Scorpius - RCW 120 is a star-forming region about 4200 years from Earth in the constellation Scorpio. In the center a hot and massive star emits powerful ultraviolet radiation, which ionize the surrounding gas, tearing off electrons from the hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of H - alpha emissions. As this ionized region extends into space, the associated shock wave meets the surrounding cold interstellar gas and cosmic dust. This gas becomes unstable and collapses under its own gravite forming dense, cold clouds or new stars will be born. These very cold clouds (- 250 degres Celsius) can only be detected in submillimetre wavelength; they appear here in blue thanks to the data obtained by the APEX telescope which observes this radiation. Illustrating the power of submillimetre - wavelength astronomy, an APEX image reveals how an expanding bubble of ionised gas about ten light - years across is causing the surrounding material to collapse into dense clumps that are the birthplaces of new stars. The region, called RCW120, is about 4200 light years from Earth, towards the constellation of Scorpius. A hot, massive star in its centre is emitting huge amounts of ultraviolet radiation, which ionises the surrounding gas, stripping the electrons from hydrogen atoms and producing the characteristic red glow of so - called H - alpha emission. Here, the submillimetre emission is shown as the blue clouds surrounding the reddish glow of the ionised gas (shown with data from the SuperCosmoS H - alpha survey). The image also contains data from the Second Generation Digitized Sky Survey (I - band shown in blue, R - band shown in red). As this ionised region expands into space, the associated shock wave sweeps up a layer of the surrounding cold interstellar gas and cosmic dust. This layer b

Orion's Nebula - The Great Nebula in Orion - Located 1500 light years from Earth, Orion's Nebula is the closest region to the formation of stars of the Sun. In its heart, a group of young stars called Orion's Trapeze. To the eye, the nebula appears as a misty patch around the central star of the line of three which form Orion's sword. The central group of stars is the Trapezium cluster and these stars are responsible for producing the nebula. It is the high concentration of dust and gas in this part of the sky which has resulted in the formation of the stars, so the Orion nebula is no random association of bright stars and dusty gas. At a distance of 1500 light years, the Orion nebula is the nearest star-forming region to the Sun

Spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor - Spiral galaxy NGC 300 in Sculptor - Located about 7 million years ago - light from Earth, the spiral galaxy NGC 300 belongs to the Sculptor's group. It appears to us as a great object in the sky since its apparent diameter is almost that of the full moon. Image obtained with a 35 cm telescope, 11 hours of cumulative poses. NGC 300 is located about 7 million light years away in the Sculptor Group in the constellation of the same name. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 11 Hours of exposure
Spiral galaxy NGC 1313 in the Reticule - The starburst galaxy NGC 1313 - NGC 1313 is a galaxy located about 15 million years ago - light. Intense star formations are observed. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope.
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2442 in Flying Fish - NGC 2442, a barred spiral galaxy in Volans - NGC 2442 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 50 million years ago - light. Its asymmetrical shape suggests that a galaxy interacts with it. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This unusual barred spiral galaxy is in the far southern constellation of Volans and was discovered by Sir John Herschel who described one of its spiral arms as hook - like. Although not seen here, (but evident on very deep images) NGC 2442 appears to have a less massive, distant companion that is also distorted, and it seems likely that the two have had a close encounter in the recent past. If there are no further meetings, the forces that hold NGC 2442 together will restore galaxy to a more symmetrical spiral form. However, much more likely is that the companion has been captured by the distorted spiral and will eventually be devoured by it, triggering a dramatic bout of star formation. NGC 2442 is about 50 million light years distant
This photo was obtained by the MPG/ESO telesope of 2.2 - m in La Silla in Chile in 2000. Located some 7 million light - years away, the spiral galaxy NGC 300 is a beautiful representative of its class, a Milky - Way - like member of the prominent Sculptor group of galaxies in the southern constellation of that name. NGC 300 is a big object in the sky - being so close, it extends over an angle of almost 25 arcmin, only slightly less than the size of the full moon. It is also relative bright, even a small pair of binoculars will unveil this magnificent spiral galaxy as a hazy glowing patch on a dark sky background. The comparatively small distance of NGC 300 and its face - on orientation provide astronomers with a wonderful opportunity to study in great detail its structure as well as its various stellar populations and interstellar medium. This image was obtained with the Wide - Field Imager (WFI) on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - m telescope at the La Silla Observatory in 2000
Spiral galaxies NGC 3314 A and B in Hydra - Galaxy pair NGC 3314 in Hydra - NGC 3314 is a pair of spiral galaxies distant about 140 million years - Earth light. These galaxies are not interacting but just perfectly aligned in front of each other from Earth. Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope shows a rare view of a pair of overlapping galaxies, called NGC 3314. The two galaxies look as if they are colliding, but they are actually separated by tens of millions of light - years, or about ten times the distance between our Milky Way and the neighboring Andromeda galaxy. The chance alignment of the two galaxies, as seen from Earth, gives a unique look at the silhouetted spiral arms in the closer face - on spiral, NGC 3314A. The motion of the two galaxies indicates that they are both relatively undisturbed and that they are moving in markedly different directions. The color composite was produced from exposures taken in blue and red light with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The pair of galaxies lie roughly 140 million light - years from Earth, in the direction of the southern hemisphere constellatio

The Cat's Paw Nebula (NGC 6334) is a vast region of star formation. NGC 6334 lies about 5500 light - years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. The whole gas cloud is about 50 light - years across. NGC 6334 is one of the most active nurseries of massive stars in our galaxy and has been extensively studied by astronomers
Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus - IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 years - light from Earth. Image obtained with a telescope 61 cm in diameter. The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) in Cepheus is part of the larger IC 1396 complex which spans a large area of the sky measuring 170 by 140 arc - minutes and is one of the brightest emission nebulae with a magnitude of 3.5. The western portion of IC 1396 contains the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) which is characterized with H - II emissions, dark lanes and globules as well as a small reflection nebula. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light - years away. Image taken with a 24 - inch telescope
Cometary blood cell CG4 in the stern - Cometary blood cell CG4 - Cometary blood cells are small clouds of isolated gases. The latter, called CG4, is located about 1300 light years ago in the constellation of Pupus. Its head is 1.5 years - light and its tail (off-field) extends for 8 years - light. This cloud is a star-forming region. Image obtained by the VLT. The cometary globule CG4 glows menacingly in this image from Eso's Very Large Telescope. Although it looks huge and bright in this image it is actually a faint nebula and not easy to observe. The exact nature of CG4 remains a mystery
Nebula Sh2 - 106 in the Swan - Sh2 - 106 nebula in Cygnus - Sharpless 106 (Sh2 - 106) is a star-forming region in the constellation Swan. Image obtained by Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Subaru Telescope. A ring of dust and gas orbiting the star acts like a belt, cinching the expanding nebula into an “” hourglass””” shape. This composite image combines optical and near - infrared astronomical data from the Hubble Space Telescope with mid - infrared data from the ground - based Subaru Telescope, located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The Hubble data (H - alpha, J, and H) were taken as part of Hubble Heritage observations of S106 in February 2011. The Subaru data were obtained in May 1999

Spiral galaxy NGC 253 in the Sculptor - Galaxy NGC 253 in Sculptor - NGC 253 is the brightest galaxy of the Sculptor's group, group of galaxies closest to the Local Group. It is about 10 million light years away. Image made with an amateur instrument, a Takahashi FS-128 bezel. NGC 253 is a spectacular starburst spiral galaxy that is choked with dust. Located about 10 million light years away in the constellation of Sculptor, it is the nearest starburst galaxy to our own Milky Way galaxy. It is called a “” starburst””” galaxy because of the extremely high rate of star formation taking place in its core. Although located at a fairly low declination for northern hemisphere observers, NGC 253 is easily visible in binoculars, and is an amazing sight in a large telescope
