Forefathers' Rock, Plymouth, Massachusetts. No more Interesting and hallowed shrine exists in the New World than that of Plymouth, on Cape Cod Bay, situate thirty-seven miles southeast of Boston. Here is the cradle of American nationhood, the scene of the historic landing of the Pilgrim Fathers, December 21, 1620. On the water-front, once lapped by the sea, is the venerated rock on which the landing was made, a huge granite boulder, now enclosed by a ralling and covered with a canopy. In a receptacle in the granite canopy are interred the bones of some of the early forefathers of the country who formed part of the Mayflower" Pilgrims. Pligrim Hall, in the town, contains many interesting relics of the Fathers, including Miles Standish's sword and Governor Carver's chair of office. Near the railroad station, on a fine eminence, is the National Monument to the Pilgrim Fathers, surrounded by colossal emblematic statues of Morality, Law, Education, and Freedom, with the lofty figure of Faith dominating the whole. The corner-stone of this characteristic memorial was laid in 1859, and the edifice was completed and dedicated in 1888.
