Image description

The bright red sea fan coral displays dense, tree-like branching with numerous fine extensions. This species originates from the warm waters surrounding the Isle of Bourbon (now Réunion) in the Indian Ocean. Sea fans grow in shallow, current-rich marine areas and form important structural elements of coral reefs. Their intense red coloration results from special pigments that may serve as protection against intense solar radiation. By Dessiné et Gravé par Martinet. From Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux. Planches enluminées d'histoire naturelle, drawn and engraved by F.N. Martinet under the supervision of E.L. Daubenton, Paris 1770 - 1786.
