Landscape of the Devonian - Calamites & Asteroxylon - Landscape of the early Devonian, about 390 million years ago, with calamites and asteroxylon (in the foreground). This is how a forest of Calamites and Asteroxylon may have appeared just about anywhere on the Earth 390 million years ago. The Calamites are the slender “” Christmas tree””” shaped plants. They grew as tall as many of today's conifers, though they are the ancient ancestors of the much smaller modern horsetails. The snake - like curlicue plants in the foreground are the now - extinct Asteroxylon, which emerged at the beginning of the Devonian period about 417 million years ago

Detroit d'Ormuz - 02/2011 - Strait of Hormuz - 02/2011 - Detroit d'Ormuz seen by Envisat satellite on February 4, 2011. The south - eastern parts of Iran (top) and the Arabian Peninsula are featured in this image, acquired by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on 4 February 2011. The closest point between the two Middle Eastern countries is the Strait of Hormuz (centre), which links the Persian Gulf (left) with the Gulf of Oman (upper right) and the Arabian Sea (lower right). Several countries are visible on the peninsula: the United Arab Emirates (top left), Oman (tip and bottom right) and Saudi Arabia (far left and bottom)
A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have fallen or fallen to Earth in a meteorite rain - A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today - 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune . Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites.: La Terre à la fin du Permien - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth

Lakes of Nayriz, Iran, seen by satellite - Neyriz Lakes, Iran - In southern Iran's Fars province, the lakes of Bakhtegan and Tashk, better known as lakes of Nayriz “” appear on this image taken by ALOS, a four-ton Japanese observation satellite. Lake Bakhtegan (central) and Lake Tashk (upper), located in the Nayriz basin, are dirty lakes in the south-east of the Zagros Mountains, whose water levels fluctuate with rain and snow in the mountains. Lake Bakhtegan, the second largest lake in Iran, is fed mainly by the Kour River, while Lake Tashk receives the overflow from the marecages at its western extremite and from an important permanent north-west source. Although normally separated by narrow strips of land, during the years of heavy rain they can join and form only one lake. Similarly, after several years of low rains, as in 1934 and 1971, the lakes can be completely low except for the points closest to the springs. The two lakes, their delta and the morecages associated with the springs have been recognized as “wetlands of international importance”. The Bakhtegan National Park, a natural park, sanctuary and reserve, is visible in the center and top of the picture above Lake Bakhtegan. The ALOS satellite (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) took this image on 6 March 2009 with the AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type - 2) instrument, which is designed to map emergeal land and vegetation cover in visible and near-infrared spectral bands with a resolution of 10 m. Lakes Bakhtegan (centre) and Tashk (top), together known as the Neyriz Lakes, in the Fars Province in southern Iran are featured in this image acquired by ALOS, Japan's four - tonne Earth observation satellite, on 6 March 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrare
Onekotan volcanic island seen from space - Onekotan volcanic island seen from space - Onekotan Island is an uninhabited volcanic island north of the Kuril Islands chain (Russia). About 40 kilometres long, this island is home to two stratovolcanoes, on the right (north), the Nemo volcano, on the left (south), the Krenitsyn volcano with the caldera Tao - Rusyr. Image obtained from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 9, 2011. Snow cover highlights the calderas and volcanic cones that form the northern and southern ends of Onekotan Island, part of the Russian Federation in the western Pacific Ocean. Calderas are depressions formed when a volcano empties its magma chamber in an explosive eruption and then the overlaying material collapses into the evacuated space. In this astronaut photograph taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 9, 2011, the northern end of the island (image right) is dominated by the Nemo Peak volcano, which began forming within an older caldera approximately 9,500 years ago. The last recorded eruption at Nemo Peak occurred in the early 18th century. The southern end of the island was formed by the 7.5 kilometer (4.6 mile) wide Tao - Rusyr Caldera. The caldera is filled by Kal'tsevoe Lake and Krenitzyn Peak, a volcano that has only erupted once in recorded history (in 1952). Extending between northeastern Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russian, the Kurils are an island arc located along the Pacific Ring of Fire.””
Richat Structure - Mauritania - Richat structure seen from space - Richat structure, geological formation of volcanic origin, in Mauritania, observed from the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2006. The so-called Richat Structure is a geological formation in the Maur Adrar Desert in the African country of Mauritania. Although it resemble an impact crater, the Richat Structure formed when a volcanic dome hardened and gradually eroded, exposing the onion - like layers of rock. The capital, Nuku alofa, sits on the island's north coast and along the Fanga'uta Lagoon. The lagoon's mangroves provide an important breeding ground for fish and birds
Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)

Earth observed at night by satellite. Mosaic of hundreds of images obtained by four satellites DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) from October 1994 to March 1995 - The image is a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) currently operates four satellites carrying the Operational Linescan System (OLS) in low-altitude polar orbits. Three of these satellites record nighttime data. The DMSP-OLS has a unique capability to detect low levels of visible-near infrared (VNIR) radiance at night. With the OLS 'VIS' band data it is possible to detect clouds illuminated by moonlight, plus lights from cities, towns, industrial sites, gas flares, and ephemeral events such as fires and lightning-illuminated clouds. October 1994 - March 1995 DMSP nighttime data collected when moonlight was low. Using the OLS thermal infrared band, areas containing clouds were removed and the remaining area used in the time series: Earth by night
Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Cape Breton Island, Canada, seen by Space Shuttle Discovery in May 1991. The Northern Hemisphere Jet Stream can be seen crossing Cape Breton Island in the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada. The Jet Stream is a narrow zone of high - speed winds typically found at altitudes of 4 to 8 miles (8 - 12 km) above the earth. They result from temperature contrasts between polar and tropical regions. The strongest Jet Stream winds are found in the winter when the contrast between polar and tropical regions is the greatest. Wind speeds can reach 90 to over 180 miles per hour (145 to over 290 km/h) from west to east. During the winter months over the United States and southern Canada, the path taken by the Jet Stream can have a large influence on the weather conditions of this region. Grasberg Mine - Indonesia - Grasberg Mine - Indonesia: The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the Indonesian province of Papua in western New Guinea, a few kilometres west of Puncak Jaya, Oceania's highest peak. It is thus located at about 4,000 m above sea level. It consists of an open pit mine and an underground mine. Image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on 25 June 2005. Located in the Sudirman Mountains of the Irian Jaya province of Indonesia, the Grasberg complex (also known as the Freeport Mine) is one of the largest gold and copper mining operations in the world. This astronaut photograph illustrates the approximately 4-kilometre-wide open-pit portion of the mine complex; there are also extensive underground mine workings. Access roads for trucks hauling ore and waste rock are visible along the sides of the pit. The mine is located in close proximity to rare equatorial mountain glaciers that serve as indicators of climate change in the region. Removal of vegetation, steepening of slopes related to mining activities, earthquakes, and frequent heavy rainfall have resulted in deadly landslides in the mine workings. While landscape reclamation projects have begun at the mine, environmental groups and local citizens are concerned with the potential for copper contamination and acid rock drainage into surrounding river systems, land surfaces, and groundwater. Astronaut photograph was acquired on June 25, 2005 from the International Space Station (ISS)

Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island (Shikotan) is one of the largest islands of the Kuril archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Japan. In this image obtained by the EO-1 satellite on 14 February 2011, this volcanic island is surrounded by ice forming spirals in the wind. Ostrov Shikotan (or Shikotan - to) is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Shikotan lies along the extreme southern edge of winter sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this natural - color image of Shikotan on February 14, 2011. The island is surrounded by sea ice - - swirling shapes of ghostly blue - gray. The ice in this image may have formed in a matter of several days, and it is prone to moving with currents. North of the western end of Shikotan, eddies have shaped the ice into rough circles. The eddies may result from opposing winds - - winds from the north pushing the ice southward, and winds from the southwest pushing the ice towards the northeast. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is seismically active

Volcanic ash cloud in Iceland - Volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - The volcanic ash plume caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano (Eyjafjallajoekull) in Iceland seen by the Envisat satellite on 11 May 2010. A heavy plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano is visible travelling over the Atlantic in this Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer image acquired on 11 May 2010. The narrow shape of the ash cloud indicates a lot of wind is blowing in a southerly direction towards the west of Ireland. Also visible, the area around the Hakla volcano (east of Eyjafjallajoekull) now appears black as the snow and ice that surrounded it in April have been completely covered by ash. The volcano has been emitting steam and ash since its recent eruptions began on 20 March

Tempete Xynthia above France seen by satellite - Storm Xynthia above France seen by satellite - The Xynthia tempete seen by Aqua satellite on 27 February 2010. An extratropical cyclone named Xynthia brought hurricane - force winds and high waves to Western Europe. Winds as fast as 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour reached as far inland as Paris, and at the storm's peak, hurricane - force winds extended from Portugal to the Netherlands. Hundreds of people had to take refuge from rising waters on their rooftops. By March 1, at least 58 people had died, some of them struck by falling trees. Most of the deaths occurred in France, but the storm also caused casualties in England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of Western Europe, acquired in two separate overpasses on February 27, 2010. MODIS captured the eastern half of the image around 10:50 UTC, and the western half about 12:30 UTC. Forming a giant comma shape, clouds stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to northern Italy
Allee de Von Karman - Von Karman vortices - Allee of Karman swirls in the clouds caused by the encounter between the wind and the mountain peak of Alejandro Selkirk Island (Juan Fernandez Archipelago) off Chile. False colour image obtained by Landsat 7 satellite on 15 September 1999. Each of these swirling clouds is the result of a meteorological phenomenon known as a von Karman vortex. These vortices appeared over Alexander Selkirk Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Rising precipitously from the surrounding waters, the island's highest point is nearly a mile (1.6 km) above sea level. As wind - driven clouds encounter this obstacle, they flow around it to form large, spinning eddies. This false color image was acquired by Landsat 7 satellite on September 15, 1999

Toquepala Copper Mine - Peru - Toquepala Copper Mine - Southern Peru: The Toquepala mine in southern Peru is a large open-pit copper mine. Image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on 22 September 2003. The rugged, mineral-rich Andes supports some of the world's biggest mines (gold, silver, copper, and more). This image looks down the bull's-eye of Peru's Toquepala copper mine, a steep sided and stepped open-pit mine. At the surface the open pit is 6.5 km across and it descends more than 3000 m into the earth. Astronaut photograph was acquired on September 22 2003 from the International Space Station (ISS)
Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere seen at sunset from the International Space Station (ISS) on May 25, 2010. This spectacular image of sunset on the Indian Ocean was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The image presents an edge - on, or limb view, of the Earth's atmosphere as seen from orbit. The Earth's curvature is visible along the horizon line, or limb, that extends across the image from center left to lower right. Above the darkened surface of the Earth, a brilliant sequence of colors roughly denotes several layers of the atmosphere. Deep oranges and yellows appear in the troposphere, which extends from the Earth's surface to 6 - 20 km high. This layer contains over 80 percent of the mass of the atmosphere and almost all of the water vapor, clouds, and precipitation. Several dark cloud layers are visible within this layer. Variations in the colors are due mainly to varying concentrations of either clouds or aerosols (airborne particles or droplets). The pink to white region above the clouds appears to be the stratosphere; this atmospheric layer generally has little or no clouds and extends up to approximately 50 km above the Earth's surface. Above the stratosphere, blue layers mark the upper atmosphere (including the mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, and exosphere) as it gradually fades into the blackness of outer space. The ISS was located over the southern Indian Ocean when this picture was taken, with the astronaut observer looking towards the west. Astronauts aboard the ISS see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity (greater than 28,000 km per hour). The multiple chances for photography are fortunate, as at that speed each sunrise or sunset event only lasts a few seconds. This astronaut photograph was acquired on May 25, 2010
