Crepuscular rays, almost parallel beams of sunlight partially blocked by white and grey clouds, sun behind central cloud illuminating some parts, rays cast through blue sky.
Crush Rays - Sunset Crepuscular Rays on Mt. Lawu - Crepuscular rays appear after sunset. Java, Indonesia, 21 July 2010. Sunset Crepuscular Rays captured on the summit of Mt. Lawu on July 21, 2010. Sunset crepuscular rays captured on the summit of Mt. Lawu on July 21, 2010. They are the rays of sunlight that appear to radiate from a single point in the sky. These rays, which stream through gaps in clouds or between other objects, are diverging columns of sunlit air separated by darker cloud - shadowed regions
Lactee and Jupiter - Milky way and Jupiter - The Lactee Way accompanied by Jupiter, the bright planet on the left, seen from Cherry Springs State Park in the United States. The center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, sets in the southwest as night begins at the Cherry Springs State Park, one of the darkest observing locations in the eastern United States. The Milky Way is a vast collection of more than 200 billion stars, planets, nebulae, clusters, dust and gas. Our own Sun and solar system are also part of the Milky Way galaxy. Seen as a luminous band of light and star clouds that stretch across the night sky, the brighter star clouds of the Milky Way are frequently mistaken for real Earth-bound clouds by observers who are unfamiliar with their appearance. Sometimes interrupted by dark nebulae and rifts, these star clouds are actually innumerable unresolved faint stars. The central bulge of the Milky Way, the brightest and most spectacular portion, is visible here in the Sagittarius region, seen at the lower left. Numerous dark nebula, clouds of non-luminous dust that obscure the stars behind them, are also part of the Milky Way and are scattered throughout the image. Brilliant Jupiter is the brightest “” star”” in the image, seen at left
Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, seen from space shuttle Discovery - Lake Ontario, lake Erie seen from space shuttle - In this picture taken at sunset, water bodies stand out, relaying the light of the Sun. In the foreground is Lake Ontario with the St. Lawrence River; above, Lake Erie. Image obtained by the shuttle Discovery on October 21, 2000. The STS - 92 Space Shuttle astronauts photographed upstate New York at sunset on October 21, 2000. Water bodies (Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Finger Lakes, the St. Lawrence and Niagara Rivers) are highlighted by sunglint (sun reflecting off the water surface), making for a dramatic and unusual regional view. The photograph was taken looking toward the southwest from southern Canada, and captures a regional smog layer extending across central New York, western Lake Erie and Ohio, and further west. The layer of atmospheric pollution layer is capped by an atmospheric inversion, which is marked by the layer of clouds at the top of the photograph
Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of Phobos, the largest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its tiny satellite Phobos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from Phobos' surface. Phobos is over the low martian plains of Syrtis Major. Below the plains extending down to Mars' terminator and beyond is the heavily cratered Terra Sabaea. Clouds of water - ice crystals are forming at the terminator between light and dark. Looking more like a common potato than a celestial body, Phobos is actually the larger of Mars' two satellites, with a length of about 16 miles and about 11 miles across its smallest dimension. Phobos does not have enough mass for gravity to pull it into a uniform sphere like the larger satellites and planets in the Solar System. Phobos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity, orbiting a mere 5,800 miles above Mars' surface, making it the closest satellite to its host planet in the Solar System. Phobos' orbit is so low that it completes one revolution in less than eight hours, easily outpacing by threefold Mars' rotation period of 24 hours, 40 minutes. The resulting tidal forces are causing Phobos' altitude to decay at the relatively rapid rate of 6 feet per century; in about 50 million years Phobos will either crash into the martian surface, or be torn apart by Mars' gravity
Saturn view of Enceladus - Illustration - Saturn from the surface of Enceladus - The planet Saturn seen from the ice surface of Enceladus. This is how Saturn may appear from the icy surface of Enceladus, one of Saturn's eight major satellites. At a distance of 148 thousand miles, Saturn would subtend an angle of 29o in Enceladus' sky, about the same width as 58 Earth moon's lined up side - by - side. While the surface of Enceladus is as reflective as new fallen snow, it would probably appear leaden about an hour before sunrise with a crescent Saturn as the only source of illumination. Like all of Saturn's major satellites, Enceladus always keeps the same side facing its host planet. From the perspective of a stationary observer on Enceladus, Saturn would always appear in the same position in the sky, cycling through its phases in about one - and - half Earth days. This image also illustrates a phenomenon only recently discovered by Nasa's Cassini probe: sunlight reflecting off of Saturn's rings casts a faint glow onto the cloud tops of Saturn's night side. The illumination is about the same as three of Earth's full moon combined
Uranus and three satellites seen by Voyager 2 - Image obtained by the Voyager 2 probe in January 1986 showing the planet Uranus accompanied by the satellites Ariel (top right), Miranda (closest to the planet) and Umbriel (bottom left). This Voyager photograph of Uranus taken in january 1986 is a composite of for images taken by the narrow angle camera. At this range, clouds and other features in the atmosphere as small as 1,370 km. could be detected by Voyager 2. Yet, no such features are visible. This view is toward the illuminated south pole of Uranus. The predominant blue color is the result of atmospheric methane, which absorbs the red wavelengths from incoming sunlight. The spot at the upper left edge of the planet's disk reulted from the removal of a network mark used in making measurments on the photograph. Three of Uranus' five known satellites are visible; Miranda (at far right, closest to the planet), Ariel (next out, at top), and Umbriel (lower left). Titania and Oberon are now outside the narrow angle camera's field of view when it centered on the planet. This color composite was made from images taken through blue, green, orange, and clear filters
