Pál Molnár was a Hungarian artist, who painted many subjects illustrating events from the New Testament of the Bible. In this simple scene, Mary is shown holding the newborn baby Jesus, and Joseph is kneeling in loving worship. The bright pastel colours and flat drawing style used in this picture were popular in the 1930s. The picture is painted in tempera (colour bound with egg rather than oil). The paint has to be applied with small, even brushstrokes, creating a smooth, sharp-edged effect.
