Image description

In the 19th century, the steep hill from the quayside to the Castle was crowded with houses and warehouses. People reached them by passages from the three staircases that climbed the hill. Many of the houses were extremely ancient. This view also shows the Moot Hall County Court (built 1812) and All Saints Church (built 1786-96) in the distance. The High Level Bridge, from which Peter Toft sketched his picture, was opened in 1849. He would have been standing on the road deck of the bridge.
