The top center block depicts the temporary memorial erected in 1846 in memory of Major Samuel Ringgold. Major Ringgold was born in 1800 in Washington County, Maryland and died a hero in the battle of Palo Alto on May 11, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. A Currier and Ives print commemorating the battle and his death was published that same year.
