Full length portrait (side view) of Marshall Stephens entitled "Manchester Ship Canal. Stephens is pictured standing on a plan of the Manchester Ship Canal, holding a model steam locomotive in one hand and a model ship in the other. Marshall Stevens (1852-1936) was a property developer and chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Caricatured by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes KCVO RA under the pseudonym ELF. Fildes was a British painter and illustrator, born in Liverpool, who trained at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools. From 1908 to 1910 he produced a large number of caricatures for Vanity Fair under the nom de crayon "ELF". Published in VANITY FAIR Supplement for September 14, 1910, as 'Men of the Day. No. 1244. "Manchester Ship Canal"'.
