The Orion MPVC module - artist view - Orion spacecraft exploded view - Ecorchee view of the module lives in Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. An artist's impression of the Orion spacecraft and its components including ESA's service module. The Crew Module sits atop the service module and can hold four astronauts and cargo. This the only part of Orion designed to reenter Earth's atmosphere: the heatshield protects it against the intense heat of reentry at 32,000 km/h. The European Service Module (ESM) provides electricity, propulsion, air and water, and forms part of the vehicle's structure, like a car chassis. More information about the module is given on separate pages to the left. A Crew Module Adapter (CMA) connects the capsule to the ESM. It houses electronic equipment for communications, power and control, and includes a bridge that connects electrical, data and fluid systems between the main modules. A number of elements are required only during launch and are discarded shortly before entering space. The Spacecraft Adapter attachments Orion to its launch vehicle. The Spacecraft Adapter Jettisonable Fairings offer aerodynamic protection during launch. When the vehicle is high enough above Earth, the fairings are jettisoned to fall into the ocean. As Orion ferries people to space and back, safety is paramount. If anything were to go wrong during launch, an abort will propel the crew capsule up and away from the danger, returning it to the ground by parachute. The Launch Aort System forms the nose of the complete launcher and has rockets of its own that fire in an emergency. It, too, is discarded at altitude
How the moon lander becomes a rocket capable of blasting astronauts off the surface of the moon
1st meeting Mir - shuttle: R.Gibson and V.Dezhurov 06/1995 - Shuttle - Mir: astronaut R.Gibson and cosmonaut V.Dezhurov - Handheld between astronaut Robert Gibson, commander of the STS-71 mission and cosmonaut Vladimir Dezhurov during the first meeting between the space shuttle and the Mir station on 29 June 1995. Astronaut Robert L. Gibson, STS - 71 mission commander, shakes the hand of cosmonaut Vladimir N. Dezhurov, Mir - 18 commander. The historic handshake took place two and a half weeks prior to the 20th anniversary of a similar in - space greeting between cosmonauts and astronauts participating in the Apollo - Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). On July 17, 1975, astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, Nasa's ASTP commander, greeted his counterpart, Aleksey A. Leonov, in a docking tunnel linking the Soyuz and Apollo spacecraft
Return to the Moon: arrival in lunar orbit - Artist view - The Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit - Artist view - Lunar program Constellation. The module resides Orion docks to the planing module in orbit around the Moon. Orion should be able to take a crew of four to six astronauts to the Moon in 2020. The Orion manned spacecraft, docked to the lunar module, in lunar orbit. The Nasa's Project Constellation plans to send human explorers back to the Moon by 2020, and then onward to Mars; each Orion spacecraft will carry a crew of four to six astronauts

The Orion MPVC module - Artist view - Artist view of the module lives Orion. This module is intended to take a crew to the Moon where asteroides will also be used to commute with the space station. Artist's concept of the Orion Service Module. When the Orion spacecraft blasts off atop Nasa's Space Launch System rocket in 2017, attached will be the ESA - provided service module - the powerhouse that fuels and propels the Orion spacecraft. Orion will be the most advanced spacecraft ever designed and carry astronauts farther into space than ever before. It will sustain astronauts during space travel and provide safe re - entry from deep space and emergency abort capability. Orion will be launched by NASA's Space Launch System (SLS), a heavy - lift rocket that will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS will enable new missions of exploration and expand human presence across the solar system. The service module of the Orion spacecraft will provide support to the crew module from launch through separation prior to atmospheric re - entry

ISS and inflatable module - Large habitat and ISS: Artist's view of a large inflatable module (much larger than all existing modules) installed on the International Space Station (ISS). A spacious inflatable habitat is attached to the International Space Station (ISS) with a manned Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) docked on one end. This inflatable habitat, much larger than any existing ISS module, is a combination of layers of flexible material capped by sturdy docking hardware at either end. The inflatable portion is collapsed and sandwiched between the docking hardware portions for launch from earth and then inflated and pressurized with a breathable atmosphere once in orbit. The habitat features a pair of 42 x 24 inch windows to the outside. The habitat is attached to a pressurized module of the ISS via a Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) while the other end of the habitat features an International Docking System Standard (IDSS) system for docking with manned spacecraft. The inflatable portion of the habitat is 45 feet long with a maximum diameter of 28 feet. Including docking hardware the total length is 55 feet. The interior of the habit, sans storage and other equipment, provides approximately 17 thousand cubic feet of micro gravity living space

This is a view of the Russian Mir Space Station photographed by a crewmember of the fifth Shuttle/Mir docking mission, STS-81. The image shows: upper center - Progress supply vehicle, Kvant - 1 module, and Core module; center left - Priroda module; center right - Spektr module; bottom left - Kvant - 2 module; bottom center - Soyuz; and bottom right - Kristall module and Docking module. The Progress was an unmarned, automated version of the Soyuz crew transfer vehicle, designed to resupply the Mir. The Kvant - 1 provided research in the physics of galaxies, quasars, and neutron stars, by measuring electromagnetic spectra and x - ray emissions. The Core module served as the heart of the space station and contained the primary living and working areas, life support, and power, as well as the main computer, communications, and control equipment. Priroda's main purpose was Earth remote sensing. The Spektr module provided Earth observation. It also supported research into biotechnology, life sciences, materials science, and space technologies. American astronauts used the Spektr as their living quarters. Kvant - 2 was a scientific and airlock module, providing biological research, Earth observations, and EVA (extravehicular activity) capability. The Soyuz typically ferried three crewmembers to and from the Mir. A main purpose of the Kristall module was to develop biological and materials production technologies in the space environment. The Docking module made it possible for the Space Shuttle to dock easily with the Mir.

ISS: BEAM - 09/2016 - Bigelow Expandable Activity Module - 09/2016 - View of the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) mooring to the Tranquility module of the International Space Station (ISS). This experimental habitable module should allow for two years to test the technique of inflatable space habitat. The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) is seen attached to the Tranquility module of the International Space Station. BEAM is an experimental expandable habitat. Expandable habitats, occasionally described as inflatable habitats, greatly decrease the amount of transport volume for future space missions. These “” expandables”” weigh less and take up less room on a rocket while allowing additional space for living and working. They also provide protection from solar and cosmic radiation, space debris, and other contaminants. Crews traveling to the moon, Mars, asteroids, or other destinations could use them as habitable structures
