The spiral galaxy NGC 2775 (or Caldwell 48) (photo)
Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromede - M31, the Great galaxy in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany it: M32 (NGC 221) in the center left, and M110 (NGC 205) below. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group, making up about thirty galaxies. M31, the Great galaxy in Andromeda, is a gigantic collection of more than 300 billion stars and is located about 2 million light years from Earth. Companion dwarf elliptical galaxies M32 and M110 are also visible. M31 and its companions are part of our local group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and M33. The Andromeda Galaxy is headed towards our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to collide with it and possibly merge into a gigantic elliptical galaxy in about 3 billion years

Andromede Galaxy - The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) - The Andromede galaxy is located about 2.3 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany it: M32 (NGC 221) at the top left of the nucleus, and M110 (NGC 205) at the bottom.

Our galaxy -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity. The artist's concept also includes a new spiral arm, called the “Far-3 kiloparsec arm,””” discovered via a radio-telescope survey of gas in the Milky Way. This arm is shorter than the two major arms and li

Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is about 25 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy interacts with a dwarf galaxy. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 12 hours of poses. NGC 6744 is a majestic spiral galaxy in the southern constellation of Pavo. It has great similarities to the Milky Way galaxy in both form and structure. It lies at a distance of approximately 25 million Light Years. At its northern tip NGC 6744 is interacting with a dwarf companion galaxy much in the same way the Milky Way interacts with the Large Magellanic Cloud. The northernmost spiral arm is most likely being stretched and its stars and gas stripped due to tidal pull from the dwarf companion. Likewise the stars of the companion will likely be engulfed and the companion will ultimately merge with NGC 6744 at a far off future time. Image taken with 14.5”” RCOS telescope, 12 Hours of exposure

Galaxy NGC 891 in Andromede - Edge - on spiral galaxy NGC 891 in Andromeda - Spiral galaxy seen by the slice located at a distance of 10 million years - light.. This image obtained with the 2.5m Isaac Newton telescope of La Palma. If we could view the Milky Way from a distance of about 30 million light years it would look something like NGC 891. But galaxies that look like this are quite rare because the chance alignment of the thin disk of a spiral galaxy with our line of sight is unusual. A few degrees either side of its orientation and NGC 891 would be just another highly inclined spiral galaxy. From this unusual vantage point we can see in NGC 891 the surprising narrowness of the obscuring dust lane, a dark, slightly irregular band across the galaxy. We also see that it is yellowish, confirming that it is dust, which absorbs blue light, as in the Milky Way. Also similar to the Milky Way is the prominent central 'bulge' corresponding to the rich star clouds in Sagittarius. However, unlike the Milky Way, NGC 891 is relatively isolated, undisturbed by neighboring galaxies. If this was a distant view the Milky Way, the dust - lane would probably be distorted by interaction with the Magellanic Clouds, which would be prominent in the picture
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is located about 25 million years ago - light from Earth. The morphology of this galaxy is very similar to that of our galaxy, the Lactee Way. Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. It also has other similarities to the Milky Way that are not visible here (but seen on a deep image) with at least one distorted companion galaxy superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds. The CCD chip that made this picture at the prime focus of the AAT (Siding Spring) covers about 7 arc minutes of sky. But the galaxy has a much bigger angular size than this, so a series of four overlapping exposures were made in red, green and blue light. Each 3 - color set was made into a color picture and the four images merged to produce the (almost) seamless image seen here

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1300 in Eridan - NGC 1300, barred spiral galaxy in Eridanus - The galaxy NGC 1300 is located about 60 million years ago - light and extends over about 85 000 years - light. Spiral galaxies appear in a variety of guises, but none are more intriguing than the barred variety. As their name suggests, these galaxies are distinguished by a bar, extending (in this case) like two more of less straight assemblies of stars either side of the bright nucleus. Caught up in the bar are two dust lanes, emerging on either side of the nuclear mass. At some distance from the nucleus, the straight, almost structurreless bar and dust lanes abruptly turn at a sharp angle. It is here that the delicately curved arms of the spiral begin, and it is here that star formation is at its most concentrated. Many spirals have such bars, including the Milky Way, where it is a subtle feature, very difficult to detect. NGC 1300, in the southern constellation of Eridanus is among the finest examples. It is about 60 million light years distant and is an outlying member of a well - populated group of galaxies
Leo Triplet (M65 - M66 - NGC 3628 spiral galaxies) - Leo Triplet (M66 group) - M66, with its neighbors M65 and NGC 3628, forms a remarkable triplet of galaxies, called the Lion Triplet or the M66 Group, located at a distance of about 35 million years - light. All three are spiral galaxies. This trio of galaxies in Leo is located at a distance of about 35 million light years. M66 is at upper left, M65 is below it at lower right, and NGC 3628 is at right. All are normal spiral galaxies, but NGC 3628 is seen edge - on, with a prominent dust lane obscuring the central portion of the galaxy

Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. It sits in a rich starfield, and is strongly inclined to our line of sight. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. At the top of the picture is a stream of stars, a remnant of a small satellite galaxy. Composite image obtained by different telescopes. M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 million light years from the sun. Near the top of the image lies M83's northern stellar tidal stream, debris from the gravitational disruption of a smaller, merging satellite galaxy. Composite image taken from different telescopes
Galaxy NGC 4650A in Centaurus - Galaxy NGC 4650A in Centaurus - The polar ring galaxy NGC 4650A is located about 130 million years away from Earth. The host galaxy is surrounded by a polar ring shaped like gas and stars. This type of galaxy is rarely observed. This image was obtained by the ANTU telescope of the VLT in 1998. This is a colour photo from the VLT that shows NGC 4650A, a member of the so - called Centaurus chain of galaxies in the southern constellation of that name. NGC 4650A is a complex system that is located at a distance of about 130 million light - years. There are two main components, a lenticular - shaped galaxy (of type S0), surrounded by a knotty extended ring - like distribution of stars, dust and gas, almost perpendicular to each other. The stars in the central, structureless region and the material (stars, gas, and dust) in the outer disk rotate in two different planes that are almost perpendicular to each other. The observed motions indicate the presence of a significant halo of dark matter within the system, although it is still unclear to which of the two components this matter belongs. Because the velocities of stars and gas can be measured in two independent planes, NGC 4650A serves as a prototype for detailed studies of the shape of dark matter halos. The origin of this strange spatial configuration is not known with certainty. It is likely, however, that an encounter between two galaxies may have played a significant role. The photo is based on a series of seven exposures through three different optical filters, obtained under mediocre observing conditions during a small break in the technical work. They have been combined to produce the present photo

Spiral Galaxy M66 in the Lion - Spiral galaxy M66 in Leo - M 66 (NGC 3627) is a spiral galaxy located at a distance of about 35 million years - light. M66, with its neighbors M65 and NGC 3628, forms a remarkable triplet of galaxies, called the Lion Triplet or the M66 Group. NGC 3627, also known as Messier 66, is a beautiful spiral with a well - developed central bulge. It also displays large - scale dust lanes. The galaxy forms, together with its neighbours M65 and NGC 3628, the so - called “Leo Triplet””; they are located at a distance of about 35 million light - years. M 66 is the largest of the three. Its spiral arms appear distorted and displaced above the main plane of the galaxy. The asymmetric appearance is most likely due to gravitational interaction with its neighbours
Spiral galaxy NGC 7424 in the Crane - Galaxy NGC 7424 in Grus - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 7424 is located about 40 million years away from Earth. NGC 7424 extends over nearly 100,000 light years, like our galaxy. Numerous bright blue clusters of massive young stars are visible along the spiral arms. Image obtained by the telescope MELIPAL of the VLT on October 9, 2004 Composite colour - coded image of spiral galaxy, NGC 7424, at a distance of 40 million light - years. This galaxy is classified as “” SAB (rs) cd””, meaning that it is intermediate between normal spirals (SA) and strongly barred galaxies (SB) and that it has rather open arms with a small central region. It also shows many ionised regions as well as clusters of young and massive stars. Ten young massive star clusters can be identified whose size span the range from 1 to 200 light - years. The galaxy itself is roughly 100,000 light - years across, that is, quite similar in size to our own Milky Way galaxy. Images obtained with the multi - mode VIMOS instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT)

This picture of the nearby galaxy NGC 6744 was taken with the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at La Silla. The large spiral galaxy is similar to the Milky Way, making this image look like a picture postcard of our own galaxy sent from extragalactic space. The picture was created from exposures taken through four different filters that passed blue, yellow - green, red light, and the glow coming from hydrogen gas. These are shown in this picture as blue, green, orange and red, respectively
Spiral galaxy NGC 1961 in Giraffe - NGC 1961 spiral galaxy in Camelopardalis - Spiral galaxy NGC 1961 (Arp 184) in the constellation Giraffe. Image made with a telescope of 61 cm. NGC 1961 (Arp 184) is a problematic galaxy. Its highly disturbed and asymmetric spiral arms would normally indicate an interaction or merger with another galaxy. However, no culprit is found to be the source of NGC 1961's angst. Given the apparent size and brightness of this galaxy - it must be one of the largest galaxies in our “” local”” universe. The shape of the galaxy may be due to its interaction with the gas in the cluster. Most of this galaxy is still producing young and massive stars that live short lives and die violent deaths as supernovae

Spiral galaxy of Sombrero M104 in the Virgin - The Sombrero galaxy (M104) in Virgo - Image of the spiral galaxy M104 (Sombrero galaxy), located about 28 million years ago - light. Image obtained with the 3.9m Anglo - Australian Telescope from Siding Spring. The Sombrero, named after the broad - brimmed Mexican hat it superficially resembles, is probably the most famous galaxy in the sky. The light from this remarkable spiral system is dominated by the billions of old, faint stars that form the vast 'bulge' around its tiny hidden nucleus. Most spirals, including the Milky Way, have clouds of old, faint stars around their nuclei, but in M104 the galaxy's light is dominated by them. This effect is enhanced because disk of the galaxy is seen nearly edge - on and dust in its outer parts is in silhouette as it crosses the picture. The galaxy is about 28 million light years distant

Spiral galaxy NGC 7331 in Pegase - Spiral galaxy NGC 7331 in Pegasus: The galaxy NGC 7331 is located about 45 million light years away from Earth. Image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 7331 is located about 45 million light-years away in the constellation of Pegasus (The Winged Horse). Facing us partially edge-on, the galaxy showcases it's beautiful arms which swirl like a whirlpool around its bright central region. Astronomers took this image using Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), as they were observing an extraordinary exploding star - a supernova - which can still be faintly seen as a tiny red dot near the galaxy's central yellow core. Named SN2014C, it rapidly evolved from a supernova containing very little Hydrogen to one that is Hydrogen-rich - in just one year. This rarely observed metamorphosis was luminous at high energies and provides unique insight into the poorly understood final phases of massive stars. NGC 7331 is similar in size, shape, and mass to the Milky Way. It also has a comparable star formation rate, hosts a similar number of stars, has a central supermassive black hole and comparable spiral arms. The primary difference between our galaxies is that NGC 7331 is an unbarred spiral galaxy - it lacks a “” bar”” of stars, gas and dust cutting through its nucleus, as we see in the Milky Way. Its central bulge also displays a quirky and unusual rotation pattern, spinning in the opposite direction to the galactic disc itself

Spiral galaxy NGC 3982 in the Great Bear - Spiral galaxy NGC 3982 in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy NGC 3982 is located about 68 million years ago - light from Earth. It extends over about 30,000 light years. It is a spiral galaxy that houses a black hole in its heart and large zones of star formation in its arms. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This face - on spiral galaxy, called NGC 3982, is striking for its rich tapestry of star birth, along with its winding arms. The arms are lined with pink star - forming regions of glowing hydrogen, newborn blue star clusters, and obscuring dust lanes that provide the raw material for future generations of stars. The bright nucleus is home to an older population of stars, which grow ever more densely packed towards the center. NGC 3982 is located about 68 million light - years away in the constellation Ursa Major. The galaxy spans about 30,000 light - years, one - third of the size of our Milky Way galaxy. This color image is composed of exposures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), and the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). The observations were taken between March 2000 and August 2009
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in the Great Bear - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 3259 in Ursa Major - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 3259 is located about 110 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy houses a black hole in its heart as well as large zones of star formation in its arms. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This classic shot of a galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 3259 is a bright barred spiral galaxy located approximately 110 million light - years from Earth. Being a fully - formed active galaxy, its bright central bulge hosts a supermassive black hole, whose huge appetite for matter explains the high luminosity of the galaxy's core: as it devours its surroundings, the black hole emits intense radiation across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, including in visible light. The beautiful spiral arms of the galaxy are not left out either as they contain dark lanes of dust and gas, ideal spawning grounds for stars. These bright, young, hot stars appear in rich clusters in the galaxy's arms and are what gives the galaxy its blueish hue. Interestingly, the galaxy has a small companion (visible to the left of the image), a much smaller galaxy that may be orbiting NGC 3259. In the background, numerous distant galaxies can be seen, easily identifiable by their elliptical shapes. They are visible here mainly in infrared light, which is shown in red in this image

Spiral galaxy NGC 908 in the Whale - Spiral galaxy NGC 908 in Cetus - NGC 908 is about 65 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy undergoes a star-forming flames; clusters of young and massive stars are visible in the spiral arms. It is 75,000 years long - light years long and its shape suggests that it is subject to the gravitational influence of another galaxy yet unidentified. NGC 908 is a starburst galaxy, one that is undergoing a period of intense star formation. This is why it has numerous clumps of bright stars in its spiral arms and appears so bright on this photograph. It is also asymmetrical, with a peculiar split in the spiral arm on the left (eastern) side of the galaxy. Both these characteristics usually mean the galaxy has been disturbed by some massive intruder, usually another galaxy, but none is evident on the photograph or in the wider field around NGC 908

MCG - 01 - 39 - 003 (bottom center) is a peculiar spiral galaxy, that presents a hook at one side, most probably due to the interaction with its neighbour, the spiral galaxy NGC 5917 (above). Both these galaxies are located at similar distances, about 87 million light - years away, towards the constellation of Libra (The Balance)
