In the 1530s, Henry VIII made, in his unmistakable hand, several significant revisions to the traditional coronation oath he had sworn in 1509, fundamentally changing its meaning. Instead of swearing to maintain the rights and liberties of 'holy churche', the King would now swear to maintain those of 'the holy churche off ingland' - but with the crucial qualification, 'nott preiudyciall to hys Iurysdyction and dignite ryall'. Henry's version of the oath was never used. Nonetheless, his manuscript alterations provide a clear indication of his commitment to the Royal Supremacy over the Church, as well as showing his awareness that by assuming it, he had broken his own original coronation oath
