Earth observed at night by satellite. Mosaic of hundreds of images obtained by four satellites DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) from October 1994 to March 1995 - The image is a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) currently operates four satellites carrying the Operational Linescan System (OLS) in low-altitude polar orbits. Three of these satellites record nighttime data. The DMSP-OLS has a unique capability to detect low levels of visible-near infrared (VNIR) radiance at night. With the OLS 'VIS' band data it is possible to detect clouds illuminated by moonlight, plus lights from cities, towns, industrial sites, gas flares, and ephemeral events such as fires and lightning-illuminated clouds. October 1994 - March 1995 DMSP nighttime data collected when moonlight was low. Using the OLS thermal infrared band, areas containing clouds were removed and the remaining area used in the time series: Earth by night

Tongatapu satellite view - Tongatapu seen from space: Tongatapu Island (Kingdom of Tonga) observed by Sentinel-2A satellite on 23 May 2016 - The island of Tongatapu and the nearby smaller islands - all part of the Kingdom of Tonga archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean - are pictured in this Sentinel-2A image from 23 May 2016 - Tonga's population is spread across 36 of Tonga's 169 islands, but about 70% live on this main island. The capital, Nuku alofa, sits on the island's north coast and along the Fanga'uta Lagoon. The lagoon's mangroves provide an important breeding ground for fish and birds

Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island (Shikotan) is one of the largest islands of the Kuril archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Japan. In this image obtained by the EO-1 satellite on 14 February 2011, this volcanic island is surrounded by ice forming spirals in the wind. Ostrov Shikotan (or Shikotan - to) is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Shikotan lies along the extreme southern edge of winter sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this natural - color image of Shikotan on February 14, 2011. The island is surrounded by sea ice - - swirling shapes of ghostly blue - gray. The ice in this image may have formed in a matter of several days, and it is prone to moving with currents. North of the western end of Shikotan, eddies have shaped the ice into rough circles. The eddies may result from opposing winds - - winds from the north pushing the ice southward, and winds from the southwest pushing the ice towards the northeast. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is seismically active

E.DEORBIT: a satellite to clean up space - E.Deorbit grabbing debris - Artist view of the satellite e.deorbit (right) catching a satellite with a net to take it to consume in the Earth's atmosphere. e.Deorbit is a European mission project that if approved in 2019 will start in 2024. This satellite will be the first to clean up space debris. He would recapture the larger objects with his articulated arm or a net, before discharging them into the atmosphere, or they would be destroyed. ESA's proposed e.Deorbit mission, shown right, using a net to catch a derelict satellite - the baseline capture method for what would be the world's first active space debris removal mission, in 2024. The mission would first rendezvous with a large, drifting ESA satellite, then capture and secure it safely ahead of steering the combination down for a controlled burn-up in the atmosphere. As well as the baselined robot arm, additional capture technologies are being investigated, including a net and harpon. In any case, grappling the derelict satellite would have to be done in a very rapid and precise manner to prevent E.Deorbit and its target rebounding apart. The mission, being developed through ESA's Clean Space initiative - tasked with safeguarding terrestrial and orbital environments - will be proposed for final agreement at ESA's next Council at Ministerial Level, in 2019. It will place European industry at the forefront of the world's active debris removal efforts and multipurpose space tugs

James Webb Space Telescope Mirrors (JWST) - Testing of the JWST's mirrors - Six of the 18 JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) mirrors seen at Nasa's Marshall Space Center. These mirrors will be tested there to ensure they will withstand the extreme temperatures of space vacuum. The JWST will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. Six of the 18 James Webb Space Telescope mirror segments are being moved into the X - ray and Cryogenic Facility, or XRCF, at Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to eventually experience temperatures dipping to a chilling - 414 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure they can withstand the extreme space environments. The test chamber takes approximately five days to cool a mirror segment to cryogenic temperatures. Marshall's X - ray & Cryogenic Facility is the world's largest X - ray telescope test facility and a unique, cryogenic, clean room optical test location. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared - optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in 2014. Equipped with a large mirror 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter, it will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy and will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth
Lakes of Nayriz, Iran, seen by satellite - Neyriz Lakes, Iran - In southern Iran's Fars province, the lakes of Bakhtegan and Tashk, better known as lakes of Nayriz “” appear on this image taken by ALOS, a four-ton Japanese observation satellite. Lake Bakhtegan (central) and Lake Tashk (upper), located in the Nayriz basin, are dirty lakes in the south-east of the Zagros Mountains, whose water levels fluctuate with rain and snow in the mountains. Lake Bakhtegan, the second largest lake in Iran, is fed mainly by the Kour River, while Lake Tashk receives the overflow from the marecages at its western extremite and from an important permanent north-west source. Although normally separated by narrow strips of land, during the years of heavy rain they can join and form only one lake. Similarly, after several years of low rains, as in 1934 and 1971, the lakes can be completely low except for the points closest to the springs. The two lakes, their delta and the morecages associated with the springs have been recognized as “wetlands of international importance”. The Bakhtegan National Park, a natural park, sanctuary and reserve, is visible in the center and top of the picture above Lake Bakhtegan. The ALOS satellite (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) took this image on 6 March 2009 with the AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type - 2) instrument, which is designed to map emergeal land and vegetation cover in visible and near-infrared spectral bands with a resolution of 10 m. Lakes Bakhtegan (centre) and Tashk (top), together known as the Neyriz Lakes, in the Fars Province in southern Iran are featured in this image acquired by ALOS, Japan's four - tonne Earth observation satellite, on 6 March 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrare

Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - JWST in clean room: Curvature measurements of the JWST Space Telescope (James Webb Space Telescope) at Nasa's Goddard Space Center. The JWST will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2018. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. The primary mirror of Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope consisting of 18 hexagonal mirrors looks like a giant puzzle piece standing in the massive clean room of Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Appropriately, combined with the rest of the observatory, the mirrors will help piece together puzzles scientists have been trying to solve throughout the cosmos. Webb's primary mirror will collect light for the observatory in the scientific quest to better understand our solar system and beyond. Using these mirrors and Webb's infrared vision scientists will peer back over 13.5 billion years to see the first stars and galaxies forming out of the darkness of the early universe. Unprecedented infrared sensitivity will help astronomers to compare the faintest, earliest galaxies to today's grand spirals and ellipticals, helping us to understand how galaxies assemble over billions of years. Webb will see behind cosmic dust clouds to see where stars and planetary systems are being born. It will also help reveal information about atmospheres of planets outside our solar system, and perhaps even find signs of the building blocks of life elsewhere in the universe. The Webb telescope was mounted upright after a “” center of curvature”” test conducted at Goddard. This initial center of curvature test ensures the integrity and accuracy, and test will be repeated later to verify those same properties after the structure undergoes launch environment testing. In the photo, two technicians stand before the giant primary mirror

Volcanic ash cloud in Iceland - Volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - The volcanic ash plume caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano (Eyjafjallajoekull) in Iceland seen by the Envisat satellite on 11 May 2010. A heavy plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano is visible travelling over the Atlantic in this Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer image acquired on 11 May 2010. The narrow shape of the ash cloud indicates a lot of wind is blowing in a southerly direction towards the west of Ireland. Also visible, the area around the Hakla volcano (east of Eyjafjallajoekull) now appears black as the snow and ice that surrounded it in April have been completely covered by ash. The volcano has been emitting steam and ash since its recent eruptions began on 20 March

Sunrise seen from Triton - Artist view - Sunrise on Triton - Artist view - Sunrise seen from Triton, the largest satellite in Neptune. A diminutive sun rises over Triton's hard and glistening landscape of rock, frozen water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and methane. The little warmth that reaches Triton's surface induces a nitrogen and methane haze, forming a very tenuous atmosphere. It is very cold on Triton with temperatures falling as low as minus 391o F. While as much as 25% of Triton may be composed of water ice, it is very unlikely that there is any liquid water, or life, on this world

Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The world's largest coral reef that extends off Queensland, Australia, seen by Envisat satellite on 18 May 2008. This Envisat satellite image features one of the natural wonders of the world - the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea off the east coast of Queensland, Australia. Australian researchers have discovered that Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor can detect coral bleaching down to 10 m deep. This means Envisat could potentially map coral bleaching on a global scale. MERIS acquired this image on 18 May 2008, working in Full Resolution mode to yield a spatial resolution of 300 m
Auckland Region (New Zealand) satellite view - Auckland, New Zealand - Auckland Region, the largest urban area in New Zealand, in the North Island, viewed by Landsat satellite - 7 August 27, 2002. Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, is located on the country's North Island. Nearly a third of New Zealand's population lives in Auckland - - more than three million people. This natural - color (photo - like) image of Auckland was acquired on August 27, 2002, by Nasa's Landsat 7 satellite. The most densely developed areas appear white and gray, while suburban areas appear grayish green - - a mixture of houses, streets, and lawns. The city spreads out across various peninsulas surrounding Tamaki Strait and other bays and inlets. The city has been built up around the Auckland Volcanic Field; within a 20 - kilometer (12.4 - mile) radius of the heart of the city, there are 49 volcanoes, most of them small cones less than 150 meters (492 feet) high. Many of them have been protected as parks or non - residential development, such as ball fields, and so they stand out as green circles of vegetation against the surrounding gray and white cityscape. Among the largest of the volcanoes is Rangitoto Island, which sits offshore of the city between the waters of Tamaki Strait and Hauraki Gulf. The last eruption in this volcanic field appears to have occurred about 600 years ago. The nature of volcanic activity in the area is different from the subduction - driven volcanism elsewhere on the North Island, such as at Mount Ruapehu. It results from the city's location above a mantle plume, a hot spot about 100 kilometers below ground where temperatures are high enough to melt rock. The melted rock has a low viscosity, and it flows easily up through the overlying rock

Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde - Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde islands - Fogo Island with its highest volcano 2800 meters south of the Cape Verde archipelago. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 10 June 2009. Fogo is one of the Cape Verde Islands located roughly 640 kilometers off the westernmost tip of Africa, Fogo received its name from English colonists around 1500 AD. The Advanced Land Imager on Nasa's EO - 1 satellite captured this detailed image of the volcano on June 10, 2009. The volcano's most distinctive feature, its nine - kilometer wide caldera, Cha Caldera, is shown in this image. The eastern half of the crater wall is gone, erased in a massive collapse deep in its ancient history. In the center of the crater, a steep cone named Pico rises about 100 meters above the crater rim (more than a kilometer from the crater floor). The young peak reaches 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) above sea level, making it the island's highest point. The crater is inhabited. A straight road cuts between the crater wall and Pico, ending near the wind that erupted in 1995. Bright white dots on the north side of the crater are villages. Residents of the Cha Caldera evacuated during the eruption
Condensation trains seen from ISS. - Contrails over Rhone valley seen from ISS. - Condensation trains caused by air traffic. Upstairs, Leman Lake. Image obtained from the International Space Station on May 15, 2002. This digital photograph taken through the windows of the International Space Station on May 15, 2002, shows condensation trails over the Rhone Valley. Condensation trails - - or contrails - - are straight lines of ice crystals that form in the wake of jet liners where air temperatures at altitude are lower than about - 40* C. Newer contrails are thin whereas older trails have widened with time as a result of light winds. Because of this tendency for thin contrails to cover greater areas with time, it is estimated that these artificial clouds”” cover 0.1% of the planet's surface. Percentages are far higher in some places such as southern California, the Ohio River Valley and parts of Europe, as illustrated here.
