Post-US Civil War, July 1865. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The camp of Captain John J. Hoff, Commissary of Subsistence, on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone of the Soldier's National Monument, on the second anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Civil War, the Hoff's office was responsible for the subsistence of all prisoners of war, political prisoners, contrabands, and of suffering Unionist families in invaded areas of the Confederacy.
