Nebulae IC 1283 - 84 and NGC 6589 - 90 in Sagittarius - Nebulosity in Sagittarius, NGC 6589 - 90 - These nebulae are located in Sagittarius at a distance of about 5900 light years from Earth. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Our view towards the centre of the Galaxy is obscured by extensive clouds of interstellar dust in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius. The large - scale, patchy nature of the obscuration can be seen with the unaided eye and it is evident on smaller scales from the uneven distribution of background stars across this picture. Light from bright stars within the dust produces the two blue reflection nebulae (NGC 6589 and 6590), and these stars are members of a loose open cluster of stars, NGC 6595 (Sharpless 37) which is at a distance of about 5,900 light years. A large, almost transparent cloud of hydrogen, mixed with traces of dust, glows with a characteristic magenta hue over most of the field of view. This is known as IC 1283, 1284 and 4700 and is likely at a similar distance to NCC 6595
Nebula Omega (M17) in Sagittarius - The Omega Nebula (M17) in the constellation Sagittarius - View of the nebula Omega (M17/NGC 6618) located in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of 5700 light years. The Omega Nebula, Messier object 17 (M17), NGC 6618, in the constellation Sagittarius is a bright nebula, criss - crossed by clouds and lanes of opaque dust and gas. It is also known as the Swan Nebula and the Horseshoe Nebula. At a distance of 5700 light - years, M17 is also a source of radio noise
Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - The Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - View of the Omega nebula (M17/NGC 6618) located in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of 5700 light years. This object derives its name from its looped shape reminiscent of the Greek letter when the nebula is seen in a telescope. The gas cloud is unusual in that it does not appear to be illuminated by the bright stars that commonly found in emission nebulae such as this. However, the nebulosity is very bright, so the exciting stars must be hidden within the cloud, an idea confirmed by the infrared brightness of the nebula. It is about 6000 light years distant
Nebula NGC 1491 in Persee - Nebula NGC 1491 in Perseus - NGC 1491 (Sharpless 206) is a nebula in the constellation Persee. In the centre, it houses a star of magnitude 11. NGC 1491 (Sharpless 206) is an emission nebula found in the constellation of Perseus. This particular nebula has an 11th magnitude star in its center. The “” reddish”” color of this object indicates that it is heavily composed of HII. Note how the central star is “” blowing”” a bubble in the gas that immediately surrounds it

Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in Swan - Cocoon Nebula - IC 5146 - in Cygnus - The Cocon Nebula, IC 5146, is an emission nebula located about 4000 years from Earth in the constellation of Swan. This complex mass of molecular hydrogen and dust, located 4,000 light years from earth, glows red by emitting light, shines blue by reflecting light and exhibits a pattern of dark lanes that result when dust absorbs light. Much of the light seen in the main part of this nebula is generated by the massive bright star near it's center. The Cocoon is a stellar nursery containing a relatively young open cluster of stars with several individual constituents that are newly formed. Wide angle, long exposure photographs reveals the nebula to be very extensive - essentially a vast river of interstellar dust
Nebula Sh2 - 106 in the Swan - Sh2 - 106 nebula in Cygnus - Sharpless 106 (Sh2 - 106) is a star-forming region in the constellation Swan. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The bipolar star - forming region, called Sharpless 2 - 106, or S106 for short, looks like a soaring, celestial snow angel. The outstretched “” wings”” of the nebula record the contrasting imprint of heat and motion against the backdrop of a colder medium. Twin lobes of super - hot gas, glowing blue in this image, stretch outward from the central star. This hot gas creates the “” wings”” of our angel. A ring of dust and gas orbiting the star acts like a belt, cinching the expanding nebula into an “” hourglass”” shape

Nebula NGC 6188 in the Altar - The NGC 6188 nebula and NGC 6193 in Ara - Nebula NGC 6188 is located about 4000 years from Earth. It is home to a cluster of young stars NGC 6193, formed three million years ago. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Here we see two bright stars whose radiant energy is beating down on to the surface of a dark cloud, very similar to the Horsehead in Orion. The cloud itself is opaque and because of that, very cold inside. These conditions are ideal for the formation of organic molecules on the surfaces of the chilled dust particles. The opacity of the cloud protects the fragile molecules within from the energetic radiation of nearby stars, but as its surface is gradually warmed and eroded, the delicate organic molecules are destroyed and the hydrogen released glows as a distinctive red emission nebula
Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - The Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - View of the Omega nebula (M17/NGC 6618) located in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of 5700 light years. Image obtained by the VST (VLT Survey Telescope) in Chile in June 2011. The first released VST image shows the spectacular star - forming region Messier 17, also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula, as it has never been seen before. This vast region of gas, dust and hot young stars lies in the heart of the Milky Way in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). The VST field of view is so large that the entire nebula, including its fainter outer parts, is captured - - and retains its superb sharpness across the entire image

Nebula NGC 7635 in Cassiopee - Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) in Cassiopeia - This nebula is located about 7100 years - light from Earth. A massive star, called Wolf - Rayet, is responsible for the formation of this bubble; it is the star BD+60* 2522. The Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia is one of the most dramatic emission nebulae visible in the northern hemisphere. Lying at a distance of about 7,000 light - years away and spanning six light - years in diameter, NGC 7635 is quite bright with a magnitude of 7.0. The star in the middle of the bubble, BD+602522, is responsible for this stunning site, for this very hot star emits so much UV radiation that it is able to also heat and excite the surrounding dust and gas, thus emitting its own radiation. It is a Wolf - Rayet star, a very luminous star and also very short - lived. This Wolf - Rayet star is 40 times as massive than our sun
Nebula NGC 2359 in the Big Dog - NGC 2359 nebula in Canis Major - NGC 2359 is a nebula in the Big Dog that houses a star Wolf - Rayet, HD 56925. NGC 2359 (Thor's Helmet) is a prototypical wind blown bubble powered by the extremely massive and unstable Wolf - Rayet star HD 56925. Nebula NGC 6334 in the Scorpion - The 'reddened' nebulosity of NGC 6334 - The nebula NGC 6334 is located about 5500 years - light from Earth. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. The star - forming nebula NGC 6334 shows no evidence of a blue component in their colour - indeed, the blue - light plate used in these 3 - colour pictures had no nebulous image at all - nor is there any obvious sign of the bright blue stars normally found in these objects. They are excellent examples of the phenomenon known as 'interstellar reddening', the selective removal of blue light by minute particles of dust in the line of sight. This accounts for both the ruddy hue and apparent absence of blue stars. The hot stars are present but only some of the red part of their light is seen so they are not conspicuous. This nebula is quite nearby (5500 light years) but located close to the Galactic plane and are buried in the dust of the Milky Way. Careful measurement of the colour of stars associated with the nebula indicate that they are dimmed by a factor of about 10 in the green part of the spectrum, much more in the blue, but relatively little at red wavelengths. Some care has been taken to ensure that these images are as close to true - colour as possible
Tarantula nebula before the appearance of supernova 1987A - The Tarantula Nebula, before supernova SN1987A - Tarantula Nebula photographed in 1984. Image obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. By great good fortune, the star (Sanduleak - 69* 202) which exploded as the supernova, had been observed some years previously and was found to be a typical young, bluish star, much hotter and brighter than stars like the Sun. There are many similar stars in this part of the LMC which is dominated by the spectacular red cloud of the Tarantula Nebula. It in such nebulae that stars are formed, often in compact groups such as those scattered across this photograph, which was taken in 1984

Orion's Nebula - The Great Nebula in Orion - Located 1500 light years from Earth, Orion's Nebula is the closest region to the formation of stars of the Sun. In its heart, a group of young stars called Orion's Trapeze. To the eye, the nebula appears as a misty patch around the central star of the line of three which form Orion's sword. The central group of stars is the Trapezium cluster and these stars are responsible for producing the nebula. It is the high concentration of dust and gas in this part of the sky which has resulted in the formation of the stars, so the Orion nebula is no random association of bright stars and dusty gas. At a distance of 1500 light years, the Orion nebula is the nearest star-forming region to the Sun

Nebula IC 2948 in Centaur - Bok's cells - A group of Bok globules in IC 2948 - View of a detail of nebula IC 2948 in the center Centaur on Bok's cells. A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. The dark spots in the picture are not photographic defects but an unusual type of interstellar cloud known as a Bok globule. Bok globules, named after astronomer Bart Bok who studied them extensively, are small dark clouds made of gas and dust that are typically condensing to form a star or stars. These Bok globules are located at a distance of about 6000 light years near IC 2944 cluster in the emission nebula IC 2948
Nebula of the crescent NGC 6888 in the Swan - Crescent nebula in Cygnus - NGC 6888 the nebula of the Crescent. This nebula is a gas shell located in the constellation Swan. The bright star in the center of the nebula is the star WR 136, a star of Wolf - Rayet, massive, very hot. The nebula is a shell of gas that is being energized by the strong stellar wind from the Wolf - Rayet star WR 136, the bright star at the center of the nebula. It is located about 5,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan. Wolf - Rayet stars are very hot, massive stars that are blowing off their outer layers
Nebula near the star S Mon in Unicorn - Fox Fur nebula in Monoceros - Nebula around the bright star S Monocerotis in the constellation Unicorn. S My belongs to a young cluster of stars located about 2600 years from Earth. The region around the 4.7 magnitude star S Mon is a fascinating mixture of red fluorescent hydrogen and dark, obscuring dust lanes. Some dust patches are close enough to bright stars to reflect light from them; these appear blue for the same reason that the day - time sky is blue - because some of the interstellar particles preferentially scatter blue light. The dust is mixed with gas and this affects the appearance of the emission nebulae, giving some of the faintest a curious 'fox fur' texture in this enhanced photograph. S Mon is part of a young open cluster of stars named NGC 2264 located about 2600 light years away, just north of the Cone nebula

Nebulae NGC 6334 and NGC 6357 in Scorpio - Nebulae NGC 6334 and NGC 6357 in Scorpius: These nebulae are located about 5500 light years from Earth - Located in the constellation of Scorpius, the Cat's Paw Nebula resemble a faint, luminous paw-print on the sky. Deep images reveal that the nebula is about a degree across in the sky. At a distance of about 5500 light-years away it is a truly vast structure spanning almost 100 light-years across. The sculpted gases of NGC 6334 are illuminated by the light of numerous powerful stars, some exceeding 10 solar masses. The two brilliant blue stars in the upper left are Lambda and Kappa Scorpii. Many of these luminous hot stars are surprisingly not visible because they lie within the dusty plane of our galaxy. At infrared wavelengths the numerous hot stars are revealed and the nature of this object as a region of massive star formation becomes clear. In the past decade water masers, molecular outflows, and x-ray sources have provided direct evidence of clusters of protostars within NGC 6334. The nebula was discovered by John Herschel in 1837, and the brief and uninformative description in his Cape Observations catalog is a testament to its faintness. The ruddy hue of this complex is the result of the absorption of blue light by the ubiquitous dust clouds along our line of sight in the plane of the Milky Way. The red, intricate bubble making up the left paw print is particularly striking and is most likely either a star expelling large amounts of matter at high speed as it nears the end of its life or the remnant of a recent supernova - Located near the famous “” Cat Paw”” nebula (NGC 6334), the Stellar Cluster Pismis 24 lies at the core of NGC 6357. Its stars include some of the most massive stellar behemoths known. One of the brightest stars in the cluster, Pismis 24-1, was thought possibly to be the most massive on record, approaching 300 solar masses, until it was discovered by the Hubble Telescope to b

Nebulae IC 1283 - 84 and NGC 6589 - 90 in Sagittarius - Nebulosity in Sagittarius, NGC 6589 - 90 - These nebulae are located in Sagittarius at a distance of about 5900 light years from Earth. Mosaic of images obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 22 hours of poses. This rich nebula complex is located near the center of the galaxy where dust is ubiquitous and often partially obscures the view at visible wavelengths. The two bright blue clouds are NGC 6589 and NGC 6590. The clouds represent scattered starlight from two imbedded young blue stars. The two bright stars are part of a loose cluster known as NGC 6595. The diffuse magenta cloud is a complex HII region which absorbs the energy from the nearby bright stars and releases it in the visible red light of excited hydrogen. The HII clouds are known as IC 1283, IC 1284 and IC 4700. This region of our galaxy is rich with dust clouds and young stars which together produce the stunning reflection nebulae we see in the image. Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - IC 1318 the Butterfly nebula in Cygnus - IC 1318 is a very extended emission nebula that surrounds the star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. LDN 889 is a vast region of dark nebulae that separates the nebula on the left from Sadr. On the extreme right, another dark nebula, B343. This is a large area of emission nebulosity around Sadr, Gamma Cygnii, the brightest star in this photo and the heart of Cygnus. Stretching more than 2 x 3 degrees here, the nebulosity actually extends far out of the photo. Most of the nebulosity is fairly faint, but brighter patches can be seen in a modest instrument. The two sections of nebulosity to the left of Gamma are called the Butterfly Nebula and have the catalog designation of IC 1318. LDN 889 is the large area of dark nebulosity that separates the two halves of the Butterfly Nebula, and B 343 is the small but very dense dark nebula on the right side of the image
Detail of the nebula NGC 3324 in the Carene - Detail of nebula NGC 3324 in Carina - Detail of the nebula NGC 3324 obtained by the Hubble space telescope. This nebula is located in the southern hemisphere, close to the great Carene nebula about 7200 light years from Earth. The image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope shows a gas wall at the edge of a cavite created by the radiation and stellar winds blown by young warm stars. Hubble space telescope image shows the edge of a giant gaseous cavity within the star - forming region called NGC 3324. The glowing nebula has been carved out by intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from several hot, young stars. A cluster of extremely massive stars, located well outside this image in the center of the nebula, is responsible for the ionization of the nebula and excavation of the cavity. The image also reveals dramatic dark towers of cool gas and dust that rise above the glowing wall of gas. The dense gas at the top resists the blistering ultraviolet radiation from the central stars, and creates a tower that points in the direction of the energy flow. The high - energy radiation blazing out from the hot, young stars in NGC 3324 is sculpting the wall of the nebula by slowly eroding it away. Located in the Southern Hemisphere, NGC 3324 is at the northwest corner of the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), home of the Keyhole Nebula and the active, outbursting star Eta Carinae. The entire Carina Nebula complex is located at a distance of roughly 7,200 light - years, and lies in the constellation Carina. This image is a composite of data taken with two of Hubble's science instruments. Data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in 2006 isolated light emitted by hydrogen. More recent data, taken in 2008 with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), isolated light emitted by sulfur and oxygen gas. To create a color composite, the data from the sulfur filter are represented by re
Nebula Trifide (M20) in the constellation Sagittarius - Trifid nebula (M20) in Sagittarius - View of the Trifide nebula (M20/NGC 6514) located in the constellation Sagittarius between 5000 and 10,000 years - light from Earth. Measuring some forty light years across, this nebula contains enough gas to make many thousands of suns. Within it a number of young hot stars have already formed. The hottest cause the gas, mostly hydrogen, to emit its characteristic red light. Around the red emission nebula the gas contains many dust grains which preferentially reflect the blue component of starlight. In some parts of the nebula there are so many dust grains that they hide the glowing gas, producing the three dark lanes which give the object its name. Trifid is located in Sagittarius constellation between 5000 and 10 000 light - years away

Nebula in the galaxy NGC 6822 - Bubble nebulae in NGC 6822 - Nebula in the irregular galaxy NGC 6822, adjacent to our galaxy. This gas bubble houses massive stars known as Wolf - Rayet. NGC 6822 is a nearby irregular galaxy reminiscent of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Like the LMC it contains many, extremely hot stars of the Wolf - Rayet type, stars which often have intense stellar winds blasting from their surfaces. Small groups of such stars are found at the centres of the bubble nebulae seen here, which are the result of the stellar winds colliding with the more or less stationary interstellar medium in NGC 6822. At the interface of the collision, the interstellar medium glows, producing a thin, luminous bubble. Such bubbles are rare in the more turbulent Milky Way galaxy, but Henize 70 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is similar
Nebula NGC 6559 in Sagittarius - NGC 6559 and IC 1274 - 75 in Sagittarius - Located in Sagittarius, this nebula is located at a distance of about 5000 years - light from Earth. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. This dusty region is probably associated with the brighter and better - known Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae which are nearby in the sky and part of the same molecular cloud. The soft red glow of fluorescent hydrogen is evidence that there are young hot stars associated with the dusty clouds. These bright stars also illuminate the tiny solid particles, producing blue reflection nebulae bordering some of the emission regions. The dust is also evident in silhouette, both as sinuous dark lanes winding through the luminous gas and as the dark patches obscuring the ancient, yellow stars that populate the central parts of the Milky Way
Nebula NGC 6164 - 5 in the Rule - The field around NGC 6164 - 65 - This nebula is located about 4000 years from Earth. It's a bipolar nebula around a hot O star at the end of life. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Very hot, massive stars lose substantial amounts of matter from their surfaces during much of their brief lives. Mass - loss is usually a fairly steady process but some stars occasionally develop instabilities and have major outbursts. This star has thrown off at least two distinct lots of material during its lifetime, the brightest and most recent being the bright lobes of NGC 6164 - 5 at the centre of the picture while a much fainter rim of nebulosity can be seen at a considerable distance from the central star, indicating an earlier episode of violent ejection. The nebula is at a distance of about 4200 light years
Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the Carene nebula (NGC 3372) obtained by the Hubble space telescope. The image shows a column of gas eroded by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young stars. Jets are also visible, showing the presence of emerging stars. NGC 3372 is located about 7500 light years away from Earth. The colors used in this image correspond to the emissions of different gases: sulfur in red, hydrogen in green and oxygen in blue. The NASA Hubble Space Telescope photograph captures the chaotic activity atop a three - light - year - tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks. This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7,500 light - years away in the southern constellation Carina. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on Feb. 1 - 2, 2010. The colors in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulfur (red)
Nebula NGC 281 in Cassiopee - Nebula NGC 281 in Cassiopeia - NGC 281 is a star-forming region about 10,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Cassiopee. At the center of this nebula is the cluster of stars IC 1590 whose stars are only a few million years old. NGC 281 is a busy workshop of star formation. Prominent features include a small open cluster of stars, a diffuse red - glowing emission nebula, large lanes of obscuring gas and dust, and dense knots of dust and gas in which stars may still be forming. The open cluster of stars IC 1590 visible around the center has formed only in the last few million years. The brightest member of this cluster is actually a multiple - star system shining light that helps ionize the nebula's gas, causing the red glow visible throughout. The lanes of dust visible below the center are likely homes of future star formation. The entire NGC 281 system lies about 10 thousand light years distant
Nebula Trifide (M20) in the constellation Sagittarius - Trifid nebula (M20) in Sagittarius - View of the center of the Trifide nebula (M20/NGC 6514) located in the constellation Sagittarius between 5000 and 10,000 years - light from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Vast clouds of hydrogen mixed with tiny dust grains are distributed throughout the Milky Way. The hydrogen can only be seen at visible wavelengths when it is illuminated by very hot stars. The light from these stars is sufficiently rich in ultraviolet light to cause the gas to glow with its characteristic red colour. In most cases, such as here, the hot stars formed recently from the hydrogen cloud. The stars found at the heart of the Trifid Nebula are here seen associated with dust lanes which are silhouetted against the glowing background. This nebula is in the constellation of Sagittarius at a distance between 5000 and 10,000 light years
The Lagoon nebula (M8) without stars - The Lagoon nebula (M8) with stars removed - In this image, the stars were removed by computer processing. Located in Sagittarius, at a distance of 5800 years - light, M8 is visible to the naked eye in good conditions. It is a star-forming region illuminated by several large O-type stars that belong to the open cluster NGC 6530 visible in the center of the image. The brightest part of the nebula is called the hourglass nebula whose gases are excited mainly by two massive supergeant stars Herschel 36 and 9 Sagittarii. M8 has at least 60 Giant B stars, 3 to 4 times more than the Orion Nebula. This image was processed to remove the stars so the incredible complex of dark and light nebulosity could more easily be seen. M8 is an amazing stellar nursery. Hot young stars that formed out of the hydrogen gas in the nebula cause it to glow in the light of ionized hydrogen at the hydrogen - alpha wavelength of 656nm. The Lagoon Nebula gets its name from the distinctive dark lane that runs through the heart of the nebula, just to the west of open cluster NGC 6530. Bok globules, small dark knots which are condensing protostellar clouds, can be seen sprinkled throughout the nebula. The brightest part of M8 has an apparent size of about 1 degree on the sky (the size of two full Moons) and is 100 light years across in space. It is located about 5,200 light years away
Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in the Swan - Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in Cygnus - The Cocon Nebula, IC 5146, is an emission nebula located about 4000 years from Earth in the constellation of Swan. This star-forming region is illuminated by massive young stars. The Cocoon is a stellar nursery containing a relatively young open cluster of stars with several individual constituents that are newly formed

Nebula North America in the Swan - The North America Nebula - The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is a large emission nebula located near the star Deneb in the constellation Swan. NGC 7000 is the North America Nebula in Cygnus. Located just 3 degrees east - southeast of Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus, this large 2 x 3 degree area of red hydrogen - alpha emission nebulosity is a complex star - forming region choked with gas and obscuring dust. It is located about 1,500 light years away and is about 50 light years wide. Three open clusters are associated with the North America Nebula: NGC 6989 in the north - west part of the nebula, NGC 6996 in the north, and NGC 6997 in the west. LDN 935 is the dark nebula that makes up the Gulf of Mexico region, and B253 is the dark nebula at the top (north) of the image. The two brightest stars in the image are Xi Cygnii, the 3.7 magnitude red star at left, and 57 Cygnii, the 4.8 magnitude blue - white star at the right. The North America Nebula was first photographed by Max Wolf on December 12, 1890
Tarantula Nebula and Supernova 1987A - The Tarantula Nebula and supernova 1987a in the LMC - Tarantula Nebula photographed in 1987, two weeks after the appearance of the 1987A supernova. Image obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. The brightest star in this picture is the first supernova to be visible to the unaided eye for almost 400 years. It occured in a region rich in young, blue stars and it was one of these which destroyed itself. When this picture was taken, about 2 weeks after the supernova was discovered, at the end of February, 1987, the expanding shell of material had already changed from blue to orange - red as it cooled. The location of the supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) means that it can only be seen from the southern hemisphere
Cocon Nebula (IC 5146) in the Swan - Cocoon Nebula IC5146 - The Cocon Nebula, IC 5146, is an emission nebula located about 4000 years from Earth in the constellation of Swan. This star-forming region is illuminated by massive young stars. The Cocoon is a stellar nursery containing a relatively young open cluster of stars with several individual constituents that are newly formed
Nebula NGC 3372 in Carene - Nebula NGC 3372 in Carina - The nebula of the Carene is located about 7000 years - light from Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae (on the left, the brightest star in the picture). In the right center, a cluster of young stars, Trumpler 14. This image shows a giant star - forming region in the southern sky known as the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). The bright star on the left of the image is Eta Carinae, which is one of the most massive and luminous stars known
Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the nebula of the Carene seen in light by the space telescope Hubble. The image shows a column of gases and dust eroded by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young stars. Jets are also visible, showing the presence of a nascent star. NGC 3372 is located about 7000 light years away from Earth. Image obtained in July 2009. Composed of gas and dust, the pictured pillar resides in a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light - years away in the southern constellation of Carina. Taken in visible light, the image shows the tip of the three - light - year - long pillar, bathed in the glow of light from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of gas and dust can be seen flowing off the top of the structure. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the Carina Nebula on 24 - 30 July 2009. WFC3 was installed aboard Hubble in May 2009 during Servicing Mission 4. The composite image was made from filters that isolate emission from iron, magnesium, oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur
Nebula NGC 6334 in Scorpio - Cat's Paw nebula (NGC 6334) in Scorpius - The nebula NGC 6334 is located about 5500 years - light from Earth. It is a vast region of star formation. Image obtained by the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope of the La Silla Observatory. The Cat's Paw Nebula (NGC 6334) is a vast region of star formation. This new portrait of NGC 6334 was created from images taken with the Wide Field Imager instrument at the 2.2 - metre MPG/ESO telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile, combining images taken through blue, green and red filters, as well as a special filter designed to let through the light of glowing hydrogen. NGC 6334 lies about 5500 light - years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. The whole gas cloud is about 50 light - years across. NGC 6334 is one of the most active nurseries of massive stars in our galaxy and has been extensively studied by astronomers. The nebula conceals freshly minted brilliant blue stars - each nearly ten times the mass of our Sun and born in the last few million years. The region is also home to many baby stars that are buried deep in the dust, making them difficult to study. In total, the Cat's Paw Nebula could contain several tens of thousands of stars. The nebula appears red because its blue and green light are scattered and absorbed more efficiently by material between the nebula and Earth. The red light comes predominantly from hydrogen gas glowing under the intense glare of hot young stars
Nebula of the Lagoon (M8) in Sagittarius - The Lagoon Nebula, M8, NGC 6523 - View of the Nebula of the Lagoon (M8/NGC 6523). Located in Sagittarius, at a distance of 6500 years - light, it extends over a diameter of 60 AL. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. The irregular distribution of light in this beautiful part of the sky is due mainly to clouds of dust that dim the light of vast clouds of stars that make Sagittarius one of the brightest parts of the Milky Way. The Lagoon nebula is an illuminated part of such a dark ('molecule') cloud and it reveals the dust as dark lanes and globules silhouetted against the luminous gas. Within the nebula is the scattered young star cluster NGC 6530, recently formed from this material, though the centre of star - forming activity has now shifted westwards from the cluster to the brightest part of the nebula, around the tiny Hourglass Nebula
Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - IC 1318 Butterfly nebula in Cygnus - IC 1318 is a very large emission nebula that surrounds the star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. LDN 889 is a vast region of dark nebulae that separates the nebula on the left from Sadr. On the extreme right, another dark nebula, B343. Image obtained with H - alpha filter, 5 hours of cumulative poses. This is a large area of emission nebulosity around Sadr, Gamma Cygnii, the brightest star in this photo and the heart of Cygnus. Most of the nebulosity is fairly faint, but brighter patches can be seen in a modest instrument. The two sections of nebulosity to the left of Gamma are called the Butterfly Nebula and have the catalog designation of IC 1318. LDN 889 is the large area of dark nebulosity that separates the two halves of the Butterfly Nebula, and B 343 is the small but very dense dark nebula on the right side of the image. This is a hydrogen alpha color composite image
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - The Carina nebula, NGC 3372 - The Carene nebula is located about 7000 years from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The brightest part of the Milky Way, as seen by the unaided eye, lies in the southern constellation Carina. Here there are an unusually large number of young, hot stars. Their radiation is rich in energetic ultraviolet light. Many of these stars were born within the spectacular Carinae nebula, seen here. The nebula is a cloud of glowing gas composed mostly of hydrogen. It excited by ultrviolet light from the embedded stars. This dostictive emission radiation is responsible for the red colour. About a quarter of the nebula is made of helium gas, the second most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen, and all the other chemical elements account for only a few percent of the total mass. The brightest star in the nebula is known as eta Carinae. This remarkable object is one of the most luminous and most massive stars known
Nebulae IC 2948 and 2944 in Centaur - A large southern emission nebula, IC 2948 - Nebula IC 2948 is a vast nebula located about 6000 years from Earth in the southern constellation of Centaur. It is associated with the cluster of stars IC 2944 near which Bok's blood cells are visible. A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. Between the Southern Cross and the rich Carina region, on the southern border of Centaurus, is a large, almost featureless emission nebula, IC 2948, with a sprinkling of bright stars, Collinder 249. It is against this uniform, backdrop that we see a brighter region (IC 2944) which hosts small group of dark clouds of the kind known as 'Bok globules'. They are named for the Dutch - American astronomer who first drew attention to them as the possible sites of star formation. There are young stars scattered through the nebula and these stars are responsible for its existence. The stars only 10 million years old and the hydrogen they illuminate seems to be unusually thinly spread and very uniform, so the nebula is both faint and extensive. It is also quite distant, about 6000 light years and is only two degrees from the Galactic plane, so there are many foreground stars
Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus: IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 light years from Earth. Image obtained with a bezel Tele Vue NP127iS, through 3 different filters that demonstrate oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) in Cepheus is part of the larger IC 1396 complex which spans a large area of the sky measuring 170 by 140 arc-minutes and is one of the brightest emission nebulae with a magnitude of 3.5. The western portion of IC 1396 contains the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) which is characterized with H-II emissions, dark lanes and globules as well as a small reflection nebula. The IC 1396 complex is technically a star cluster (aka Cr 439, Trumpler 37) owing to the presence of a developing open but loose cluster at the heart of this rich nebulosity. This open star cluster is comprised of 50-100 member stars which vary in brightness spanning an area of approximately 50 'in diameter and which are not very well detached from the background sky. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light-years away - Image taken in combining the light from 3 different filters tracing emission from oxygen, hydrogen, and sulphur
