Constellation of the Berenice Hair - Constellation of Coma Berenices - The constellation of the Berenice Hair contains a cluster of stars, Melotte 111. Coma Berenice's (Berenices Hair) would be as insignificant as many of Lacaille's southern sky inventions if it were not for the subtle but distinctive Coma Star Cluster (Melotte 111), 270 light years away. The constellation's name alludes to the flowing hair of Queen Berenices of Egypt, allegedly cut off in gratitude for the safe return of her husband from some military escapade. This constellation was once considered to be part of Leo, where the hairy smudge of the open cluster was regarded as the tuft of the lion's tail. Melotte 111 is a large, open cluster of stars ranging between 5th magnitude (barely visible) to 10th magnitude, 100 times fainter. It extends over 5 degrees and despite the faintness of its constituent stars is clearly visible as a hazy patch in an otherwise undistinguished part of the sky. Coma is the direction of the north galactic pole, where we look beyond our galaxy through relatively few foreground stars. Had Melotte 111 been in the Milky Way it would be hard to see

Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Coma Berenices: The galaxy NGC 4651 (Arp 189) is located about 50 million light years away from Earth - The Umbrella Galaxy (NGC 4651 or Arp 189) exhibits a jet like spear that's strikingly coherent and narrow. The structure was previously reported by Boris Vorontsov Velyaminov in 1959 but never interpreted as a stellar tidal stream. This deep image additionally shows a spectacular crescent shaped shell surrounding the east side of the star system that corresponds to the apocenter of the dwarf galaxy. This galaxy is located at about 50 million light years away.
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 4394 in Berenice's Hair - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 4394 in Coma Berenices: NGC 4394 is a barree spiral galaxy located in the Virgin's cluster about 55 million light years from Earth. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) - Discovered in 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel, NGC 4394 is a barred spiral galaxy situated about 55 million light-years from Earth. The galaxy lies in the constellation of Coma Berenices (Berenice's Hair), and is considered to be a member of the Virgo Cluster. NGC 4394 is the archetypal barred spiral galaxy, with bright spiral arms emerging from the ends of a bar that cuts through the galaxy's central bulge. These arms are peppered with young blue stars, dark filaments of cosmic dust, and bright, fuzzy regions of active star formation. At the centre of NGC 4394 lies a region of ionised gas known as a LINER. Liners are active regions that display a characteristic set of emission lines in their spectra- mostly weakly ionised atoms of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. Although LINER galaxies are relatively common, it's still unclear where the energy comes from to ionise the gas. In most cases it is thought to be the influence of a black hole at the centre of the galaxy, but it could also be the result of a high level of star formation. In the case of NGC 4394, it is likely that gravitational interaction with a nearby neighbour has caused gas to flow into the galaxy's central region, providing a new reservoir of material to fuel the black hole or to make new stars
Colliding galaxies NGC 4676 in Berenice's Hair - Colliding galaxies NGC 4676 - The galaxy NGC 4676 is located about 300 million years away - light from Earth. It is a system of two spiral galaxies that collide and eventually become one galaxy. Image obtained on May 31, 2008 with a telescope 61 cm in diameter. Located 300 million light - years away in the constellation Coma Berenices, the colliding galaxies have been nicknamed “” The Mice”” because of the long tails of stars and gas emanating from each galaxy. Otherwise known as NGC 4676, the pair will eventually merge into a single giant galaxy. Image taken on May 31 2008 with a 24 - inch telescope
Lenticular galaxy NGC 4710 in Berenice's Hair - Lenticular galaxy NGC 4710 in Coma Berenices - The galaxy NGC 4710 is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth, in the galaxy cluster of Our Lady. It's a lenticular galaxy seen from the slice. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Edge - on galaxy located at about 60 million light years away. NGC 4710 is a member of the giant Virgo Cluster of galaxies and lies in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices (the Hair of Queen Berenice). It is not one of the brightest members of the cluster, but can easily be seen as a dim elongated smudge on a dark night with a medium - sized amateur telescope. In the 1780s, William Herschel discovered the galaxy and noted it simply as a “” faint nebula””. It is an example of a lenticular or S0 - type galaxy - a type that seems to have some characteristics of both spiral and elliptical galaxies. Image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope

Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Coma Berenices - The galaxy NGC 4651 (Arp 189) is located about 50 million years away - light from Earth. The Umbrella Galaxy (NGC 4651 or Arp 189) exhibits a jet like spear that's strikingly coherent and narrow. Interestingly, a possible second arc on the western side of the galaxy can also be seen in this image. This feature is less obvious because it's partially hidden by the galaxy's disk and suggests we are observing a moderately inclined structure projected into the halo of NGC 4651. This image was produced by combining an hour of exposure through the Isaac Newton Telescope, located on the Spanish island of La Palma, with over 13 hours of imagery obtained with the 0.5 meter telescope at the Blackbird Observatory in New Mexico (USA). This galaxy is located at about 50 million light years away

Spiral Galaxy NGC 4911 - Galaxy Spiral NGC 4911 - The NGC 4911 galaxy photographed here by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is located in the Coma galaxy cluster (Abell 1656) about 320 million light years ago. Image obtained from different cliches obtained from 2006 to 2009, 28 hours of installation in total. A long - exposure Hubble Space Telescope image shows a majestic face - on spiral galaxy located deep within the Coma Cluster of galaxies, which lies 320 million light - years away in the northern constellation Coma Berenices. The galaxy, known as NGC 4911, contains rich lanes of dust and gas near its center. These are silhouetted against glowing newborn star clusters and iridescent pink clouds of hydrogen, the existence of which indicates ongoing star formation. Hubble has also captured the outer spiral arms of NGC 4911, along with thousands of other galaxies of varying sizes. This natural - color Hubble image, which combines data obtained in 2006, 2007, and 2009 from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys, required 28 hours of exposure time
Group of galaxies HCG 61 in Berenice's Hair - Hickson 61 - The Box - The group of galaxies HCG 61 (Hickson 61, the box) consists of three interacting galaxies, and one forward galaxy (NGC 4173, the largest in the image) that is not physically associated. From the top and then clockwise, we find the spiral galaxy NGC 4173, the lenticular galaxy NGC 4169, and the spiral galaxies NGC 4174 and NGC 4175. Hickson 61 (HCG 61) is a group of four galaxies located in Coma Berenices. In foreground is NGC 4173 (top left, the largest spiral galaxy) which is closer than the three other galaxies and not associated to them. At right is the brightest galaxy, NGC 4169, a lenticular galaxy. Bottom right is the spiral galaxy NGC 4174 and bottom left, NGC 4175
Galaxies around NGC 4874 - Galaxies around NGC 4874 - NGC 4874 (right middle) is a large elliptical galaxy belonging to a cluster of galaxies comprising more than a thousand galaxies situated 330 million years - light in the constellation of Coma Berenices (Berenice's Hair). Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, NGC 4874 is the brightest object, located to the right of the frame and seen as a bright star - like core surrounded by a hazy halo. A few of the other galaxies of the cluster are also visible, looking like flying saucers dancing around NGC 4874. But the really remarkable feature of this image is the point - like objects around NGC 4874, revealed on a closer look: almost all of them are clusters of stars that belong to the galaxy. Each of these globular star clusters contains many hundreds of thousands of stars. Recently, astronomers discovered that a few of these point - like objects are not star clusters but ultra - compact dwarf galaxies, also under the gravitational influence of NGC 4874. Being only about 200 light - years across and mostly made up of old stars, these galaxies resemble brighter and larger versions of globular clusters. They are thought to be the cores of small elliptical galaxies that, due to the violent interactions with other galaxies in the cluster, lost their gas and surrounding stars. This Hubble image also shows many more distant galaxies that do not belong to the cluster, seen as small smudges in the background. While the galaxies in the Coma Cluster are located about 350 million light - years away, these other objects are much further out
Spiral Galaxy NGC 4921 - Galaxy Spiral NGC 4921 - Galaxy NGC 4921 photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Located in the cluster of Coma galaxies (Abell 1656) is about 320 million light years old, this spiral galaxy presents an unusual structure with poorly marked arms; some young blue stars are visible but the activity of star formation here is much less strong than in other spiral galaxies. In the background, many more distant galaxies appear. This very deep image taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the spiral galaxy NGC 4921 along with a spectacular backdrop of more distant galaxies. The Coma Galaxy Cluster, in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices, the hair of Queen Berenice, is one of the closest very rich collections of galaxies in the nearby Universe. The cluster, also known as Abell 1656, is about 320 million light - years from Earth and contains more than 1000 members. The brightest galaxies, including NGC 4921 shown here, were discovered back in the late 18th century by William Herschel. NGC 4921 is one of the rare spirals in Coma, and a rather unusual one - - it is an example of an “anaemic spiral”” where the normal vigorous star formation that creates a spiral galaxy's familiar bright arms is much less intense
Spiral Galaxy NGC 4921 - Unusual Spiral NGC 4921 in the Coma Galaxy Cluster - Galaxy NGC 4921 photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). It was created from a total of 80 separate pictures through yellow and near - infrared filters. The cluster, also known as Abell 1656, is about 320 million light - years from Earth and contains more than 1000 members. The brightest galaxies, including NGC 4921 shown here, were discovered back in the late 18th century by William Herschel. The galaxies in rich clusters undergo many interactions and mergers that tend to gradually turn gas - rich spirals into elliptical systems without much active star formation. As a result there are far more ellipticals and fewer spirals in the Coma Cluster than are found in quieter corners of the Universe. NGC 4921 is one of the rare spirals in Coma, and a rather unusual one - - it is an example of an “” anaemic spiral”” where the normal vigorous star formation that creates a spiral galaxy's familiar bright arms is much less intense. As a result there is just a delicate swirl of dust in a ring around the galaxy, accompanied by some bright young blue stars that are clearly separated out by Hubble's sharp vision. Spiral Galaxy M100 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices - The spiral galaxy M100 is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Several dwarf elliptic galaxies are visible in this image, one just above M100 probably interacting. This image was obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. In this deep image fainter galaxies appear. One seems to be involved with the faint outskirts of the large spiral. The somewhat distorted shape of the dwarf galaxy suggests it could be both influencing and being influenced by M100, and may be the cause of the asymmetry in the spiral arms. Nearby is an even fainter, elongated dwarf galaxy and elsewhere in the picture are several others, all probably members of the Virgo cluster, which spills over into the adjoining constellation of Coma Berenices

Had Melotte 111 been in the Milky Way it would be hard to see
Coma cluster of galaxies Abell 1656 - Coma cluster of galaxies - The Coma cluster of galaxies consists of more than a thousand galaxies located 330 million years - light in the constellation Coma Berenices. This cluster is dominated by two large elliptical galaxies NGC 4874 on the right and NGC 4889 on the left. The Coma cluster of galaxies (Abell 1656) is one of the densest galaxy cluster known. It contains a thousand of galaxies and is located 330 million light years away. Two big elliptical galaxies dominate it: NGC 4874 (right) and NGC 4889 (left)
Elliptical galaxy NGC 4881 and distant galaxies - Elliptical galaxy NGC 4881 and distant galaxies - The elliptical galaxy NGC 4881 (upper left) is about 300 million years away - light from Earth. NGC 4881 is located in the Coma galaxy cluster that contains at least 1,000 galaxies and is five times farther from us than the Virgin's cluster. Almost all the objects visible in this photo are located far behind the Coma cluster, except for the spiral galaxy to the right of Ngc 4881. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1994. This photo mosaic, which shows a field of distant galaxies, is a computer enhanced reproduction of a picture taken 4 March 1994 with the repaired Hubble Space Telescope. The brightest object in this picture is NGC 4881. It is a 13th - magnitude elliptical galaxy in the outskirts of the Coma Cluster, a great cluster of galaxies more than 5 times farther away than the Virgo Cluster. Except for a 16th - magnitude Coma spiral at the right and a few foreground stars of the Milky Way, almost everything else in this field lies far beyond the Coma Cluster. There is a fascinating assortment of background galaxies, including an apparent galaxian merger in progress
Spiral galaxy M100 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices - The spiral galaxy M100 (NGC 4321) is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Several dwarf elliptic galaxies are visible in this image, one just above M100 probably interacting. This face - on spiral M100, is one of the finest spirals in the Virgo galaxy cluster. As might be expected in a galaxy - rich environment, the lack of perfect symmetry in its brightest spiral arms suggests that M100 has been disturbed by gravitational interaction with its neighbours. At the top of the image is a less spectacular galaxy, a so - called 'nucleated dwarf' elliptical galaxy, probably interacting with M100

The Coma cluster (Abell 1656) is a particularly rich cluster of individual galaxies (over 1000 members), most prominently the two giant ellipticals, NGC 4874 (right) and NGC 4889 (left). The remaining members are mostly smaller ellipticals. The cluster is seen towards the constellation Coma Berenices, and is actually at a distance of about 100 Mpc (330 million light years, or a redshift of 0.023) from us. Coma cluster of galaxies Abell 1656 - Coma cluster of galaxies - The Comas cluster is a large cluster of galaxies, comprising several thousand galaxies. It is located more than 300 million light years ago in the constellation Coma Berenices (Berenice Hair). This photo from the Hubble Space Telescope shows part of the cluster of a brilliant spiral galaxy, IC 4040, in the top left, and many elliptical galaxies. Also known as Abell 1656, the Coma Cluster is over 300 million light - years away. The cluster, named after its parent constellation Coma Berenices, is near the Milky Way's north pole. This places the Coma Cluster in an area unobscured by dust and gas from the plane of the Milky Way, and easily visible by Earth viewers. This Hubble image consists of a section of the cluster that is roughly one - third of the way out from the center of the cluster. One bright spiral galaxy is visible in the upper left of the image. It is distinctly brighter and bluer than galaxies surrounding it. A series of dusty spiral arms appears reddish brown against the whiter disk of the galaxy, and gives rise to the idea that this galaxy has been disturbed at some point in the past. The other galaxies in the image are either elliptical, S0 galaxies, or background galaxies far beyond the Coma Cluster sphere
