This optical image suggests that the light observed at optical wavelengths is a combination of emissions from: recent star forming regions situated near M81, the extended disk of M81 and scattered light from the same Galactic cirrus that is responsible for the bulk of the far infrared emissions. The observed motions indicate the presence of a significant halo of dark matter within the system, although it is still unclear to which of the two components this matter belongs. Because the velocities of stars and gas can be measured in two independent planes, NGC 4650A serves as a prototype for detailed studies of the shape of dark matter halos. The origin of this strange spatial configuration is not known with certainty. It is likely, however, that an encounter between two galaxies may have played a significant role. The photo is based on a series of seven exposures through three different optical filters, obtained under mediocre observing conditions during a small break in the technical work. Astronomers took this image using Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), as they were observing an extraordinary exploding star - a supernova - which can still be faintly seen as a tiny red dot near the galaxy's central yellow core. Named SN2014C, it rapidly evolved from a supernova containing very little Hydrogen to one that is Hydrogen-rich - in just one year. This rarely observed metamorphosis was luminous at high energies and provides unique insight into the poorly understood final phases of massive stars. NGC 7331 is similar in size, shape, and mass to the Milky Way. It also has a comparable star formation rate, hosts a similar number of stars, has a central supermassive black hole and comparable spiral arms. The primary difference between our galaxies is that NGC 7331 is an unbarred spiral galaxy - it lacks a “” bar”” of stars, gas and dust cutting through its nucleus, as we see in the Milky Way. Although it is uncertain whether this interaction leads to a fusion of galaxies, the galaxies are already gravitationally affected by each other and a bridge of matter has formed between the two. It is not certain that this interaction will end in a collision and ultimately a merging of the two galaxies, although the galaxies have already been affected. Together known as Arp 271, this dance will last for tens of millions of years, creating new stars as a result of the mutual gravitational attraction between the galaxies, a pull seen in the bridge of stars already connecting the two. Located 90 million light - years away towards the constellation of Virgo (the Virgin), the Arp 271 pair is about 130 000 light - years across. It was originally discovered in 1785 by William Herschel. Quite possibly, our own Milky Way will undergo a similar collision in about five billion years with the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy, which is now located about 2.6 million light - years away from the Milky Way. This new deep image depicts multiple debris shells that evidence previous mergers with one or more satellite galaxies. NGC 3521 is an example of a flocculent galaxy. Galaxies are assigned this classification because they exhibit short, fragmented and somewhat disorganized spiral arms. Almost one third of all spiral galaxies display this characteristic to some extent. The cause of this condition remains elusive but recent observations have revealed that this galaxy has experienced a merger with one or more satellite galaxies
