The ball of the ardents or ball of the savages: on the occasion of the wedding of a lady of Isabeau (Isabella, Elizabeth) from Bavaria on 28 January 1393, the king disguised himself and chained himself to four other courtiers. His brother, the Duke of Orléans, to recognize them, approached a torch and set fire to their costumes. The king was barely saved and one of the other four gentlemen, who threw himself into a basin of water. 19th century engraving, Histoire de France by Martin.

The Bal des ardents or ball des sauvages unhappy consequence of a charivari (or mumerie) organizes in order to distract the king of France Charles VI on 28 January 1393 - the king is saved by his aunt Jeanne de Boulogne, then fourteen-year-old duchess of Berry, who immediately wraps him with his dress and petticoats to stifle the flames ( Ardents (Ball of the Burning Men or Ball of the Wild Men) held on 28 January 1393 in Paris at which Charles VI of France performed in a dance with five members of the French nobility - Four of the dancers were killed in a fire caused by a torch brought in by a spectator, Charles's brother Louis, Duke of Orleans - The Duchess of Berry holds her blue skirts over a barely visible Charles VI of France as the dancers tear at their burning costumes) Engraving from “Paris-a-Trans-les-Siecles” by H Gourdon of knee 19th century Private Collection
