Star Vega in Lyra - Star Vega in Lyra - Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the main star of the constellation Lyra, located only 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere after Sirius. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will take the place of the polar star indicating the north in the year 14,000. Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the brightest star of Lyra constellation, located at 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second most luminous star in northern hemisphere. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will point north celestial pole in year 14,000
Comete Panstarrs C/2011 L4 and Gamma Cephei - Comete PanStarrs (C/2011 L4) near the star Gamma Cephei (the brightest star at the top left), May 12, 2013. Due to the precession of equinoxes, Gamma Cephei (Errai) will indicate the northern Celestial pole in a few thousand years. Image taken on May 12 2013, when this comet developed a very interesting fan-shaped tail. The bright star in the image is Gamma Cephei, aka Errai. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, Gamma Cephei will be our next bright northern pole star, in a couple thousand years
Pisces Constellation - Constellation of Pisces - Pisces (the Fishes) is a large constellation of mostly quite faint stars at the edge of an ancient and huge part of the sky known as 'the Sea'. Pisces is said to resemble two fish, which are tied to a (alpha) Piscium by long lines. Alpha Piscium is known as Al Rischa in English, where it means 'the cord'. Some Greek mythologies have two men tethered to this star, though some of the other stars have fishy names. The Sun is in Pisces from March 13 to April 19, and it crosses the ecliptic on March 21, which marks the vernal Equinox, the first day of autumn in the southern hemisphere. This used to be called the first point in Aries, but precession has now moved it into Pisces. However, this point in the sky is the origin of right ascension (RA) in the astronomical equatorial coordinate sytem, and because it moves with precession, RA and Dec are defined at a certain date

Constellation of Belier - Constellation of Aries - Constellation of Belier and clusters of Pleiades (in the Taurus). Although inconspicuous, Aries is one of the constellations of the zodiac and from ancient times has been represented by a ram, the same ram whose golden fleece was sought by Jason and the Argonauts in the great ship Argo Navis. For more than 2000 years it also of astronomical importance because it was the constellation where the Sun crossed the celestial equator (ecliptic) each year at the vernal equinox, marking the first point in Aries from which right ascension is measured. Precession has now carried this point into Pisces. The constellation is the 39th largest in the sky and covers about 440 square degrees. The best - known object in this field is the Pleiades star cluster (M45 in Taurus)

Constellation of Capricornus - Constellation of Capricornus - Capricornus (the Sea Goat, Capricorn to astrologers) is one of the more surprising mythical creatures projected on the sky, a male goat with the tail of a fish. However, adjoining Aquarius and Piscis Austrinus, it is in a particularly watery part of the sky. The orientation of this strange creature is set by its brightest star, Deneb Algiedi (d Cap, the Goat's tail), while Algedi (or Giedi, a Cap) simply means goat or ibex. Although it is not particularly conspicuous the constellation is of ancient lineage, predating the ancient Greeks, perhaps because in ancient times the northern Winter Solstice occured in Capricornus. Because of precession, it is now in Aquarius though the idea is preserved in the Tropic of Capricorn which is the line around the northern hemisphere globe where the Sun is directly overhead at noon in mid - winter. Best seen in the early evening in September
Constellation of the Southern Cross - Constellation Crux. The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross with Beta and Alpha Centaurus left. Image obtained from New Zealand. 'Crux', being Latin for 'cross', commonly known as the' Southern Cross' (in contrast to the Cygnus (constellation) Northern Cross), is the smallest of the 88 modern constellations, but nevertheless one of the most distinctive. It is surrounded on three sides by the constellation Centaurus while to the south lies the 'Fly' (Musca). Crux was originally thought of by ancient Greeks as part of Centaurus, but was defined as a separate asterism in the 16th Century after Amerigo Vespucci's expedition to South America in 1501. Vespucci mapped the two stars, Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri as well as the stars of the Crux. Although these stars were known to the ancient Greeks, gradual precession had lowered them below the European skyline so that they were forgotten

Constellation of Lyra - Constellation of Lyra - Constellation of Lyra with bright star Vega. Lyra, The Lyre is one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy, and represents a stringed musical instrument widely used in Greek classical times. Apparently, the young god Hermes (Mercury) created the lyre from the body of a large tortoise shell covered with animal hide sporting antelope horns. The instrument is associated with the virtues of moderation and equilibrium, and was given by Hermes to his half - brother Apollo, who in turn gave it to his son Orpheus. Lyra is a small constellation, but rather obvious to the eye. Its principal star, Vega, is the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere and is also interesting because it is seen almost pole - on and is one of the most rapidly rotating stars known, so it could see it from a different direction it would appear distinctly flattened. Because of precession, Vega is destined to be the Pole Star in about 12,000 years. Entirely unconnected to this, the direction of the Sun around the Milky Way galaxy, with reference to external galaxies, is known as the solar apex. This point on the sky, as determined from optical observations, is in Lyra, close to its border with Hercules, and the Sun and planets are moving in this direction at about 300 kilometers per second

Balance Constellation - Constellation of Libra - At the bottom of the picture, the brilliant star is Antares, in the Scorpio. Libra, The Scales is an ambivalent constellation in that it was created by the Romans during the reign of Julius Caesar from the rather empty patch of sky westward of neighboring Scorpius. The ancient Greeks knew the stars of what is now Libra as the Claws of the Scorpion and the star names preserve their ancient origins. The names Zeuben Eschamali, Zeuben Elgenubi and Zeuben Elakrab are besed on the English words for northern claw, southern claw, and the scorpion's claw respectively. The Roman interpretation reflects that of ancient Egypt, where the main stars are known as the northern and southern scales, as in a balance - beam weighting device. Ptolemy and other classical writers refer to the group as both the Scales and as the Claws, and there is a link in this idea to the adjoining constellation of Virgo, where the female figure is sometimes shown as holding the Scales of Justice. Libra is a constellation of the Zodiac, the only one that does not represent some kind of real or imaginary creature. The Sun was in Libra during the (northern) autumnal equinox in Roman times, again adding to the idea of balance between day and night. However, precession has now shifted the point where the Sun moves south of the ecliptic into Virgo

Constellation Cancer - Cancer constellation - At the top right, the star Pollux des Gemeaux. Cancer (the Crab) is a rather small constellation of 506 square degrees without any bright stars, however, the stick figure above strongly hints at a crab - like shape. The ecliptic runs through the middle of the main stars, which makes it one of the 12 zodiacal constellations. It is best seen in the early evening in March. The most obvious feature in the image above is the large open cluster Messier 44, also known as Praesepe, which appears to the unaided eye as a fuzzy patch. It is easly resolved into numerous faint stars in binoculars, hence its popular name, the Beehive cluster. Although inconspicuous, the constellation gave its name to the Tropic of Cancer. In ancient times Cancer was where the Sun appeared at its maximum mid - day elevation at the time of the (northern) summer solstice. Because of the precession of the equinoxes the northern summer solstice now occurs when the Sun is in Taurus. However, the Tropic of Cancer is still so names, and is the line of latitude around the northern hemisphere where the Sun is directly overhead at local noon on the day of the summer solstice
Planetary nebula NGC 5189 in the Fly - NGC 5189 - Planetary nebula in Musca - This nebula is located about 3000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Fly. Image obtained by the Gemini telescope. NGC 5189 is a planetary nebula. At the end of its life, a star with a mass less than eight times that of the Sun will blow its outer layers away, giving rise to a planetary nebula. Some of these stellar puffballs are almost round, resembling huge soap bubbles or giant planets (hence the name), but others, such as NGC 5189 are more intricate. In particular, this planetary nebula exhibits a curious S” - shaped profile, with a central bar that is most likely the projection of an inner ring of gas discharged by the star, seen edge on. The details of the physical processes producing such a complex symmetry from a simple, spherical star are still the object of astronomical controversy. One possibility is that the star has a very close (but unseen) companion. Over time the orbits drift due to precession and this could result in the complex curves on the opposite sides of the star visible in this image. This image has been taken with the Gemini Telescope.
