Lunar green ray - Lunar green flash - The top of the Full Moon appears just on the horizon (to the left of the beacon). At this precise moment, a green ray is visible during this 2-second pose. In the center is the lighthouse of La Perdrix, located between the island - Tudy and Loctudy, and on the right one of the islands of the Glenan archipelago. 6 May 2012, Ile Garo (Finistere). The upper part of the Moon is appearing at the horizon to display a green flash. Lighthouse of La Partridge. May 6, 2012, Ile Garo (Fnistere)
Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed
Moon: the wall of Altai, Piccolomini and Fracastor - Moon: Rupes Altai, Piccolomini and Fracastorius - The wall of Altai is an escarpment of about 1000m high and extends over 400 km. At its bottom end, the Piccolomini crater. Up right in the shadow, the big crater Fracastor. Image obtained on October 1, 2007, 2 days before the last quarter of the Moon. Rupes Altai is an escarpment running more than 400 km long and 1000 m high. Its southeastern end (bottom) is the crater Piccolomini. Top right, the very last sun ray is leaving Fracastorius in the darkness. Image taken on october 1st 2007, two days before the last quarter of the moon
Size comparison: Enceladus, Earth and Moon satellite - Enceladus, Earth, and Earth's Moon Compared - Saturn Enceladus satellite (500 km in diameter) compares with Earth and Moon. Enceladus is considered one of Saturn's major satellites, however it is quite diminutive when compared with the Earth and Earth's Moon. With a radius of only 160 miles, Enceladus could rest in the Gulf of Mexico with plenty of room to spare. Enceladus is one of the brightest objects in the Solar System. Where Earth's Moon has a surface reflectively about the same as charcoal, Enceladus is covered in water ice that reflects sunlight like freshly fallen snow

Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on 10 - 09 - 2007 - Saturn seen by Cassini spacecraft Sept. 10 2007. - Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on 10 - 09 - 2007 at a distance of 3.3 million km from the planet shortly before it flew over the Japet satellite. Mosaic of 45 images. Several satellites are visible in this image; from right to left: Titan, Tethys, Rhea, Mimas, Enceladus and Dione. While on final approach for its Sept. 2007 close encounter with Saturn's moon Iapetus, Cassini spun around to take in a sweeping view of the Saturn System. Iapetus (1,468 kilometers, or 912 miles across) is the only major moon of Saturn with a significant inclination to its orbit. From the other major satellites, the rings would appear almost edge - on, but from Iapetus, the rings usually appear at a tilt, as seen here. This natural color mosaic consists of 15 red, green and blue spectral filter images acquired in five wide - angle camera footprints that swept across the scene. Moons visible in this image: Dione (1,126 kilometers, or 700 miles across) at center left, Enceladus (505 kilometers, or 314 miles across) near the left side ansa (or ring edge), Mimas (397 kilometers, or 247 miles across) a speck against the ring shadows on Saturn's western limb, Rhea (1,528 kilometers, or 949 miles across) against the bluish backdrop of the northern hemisphere, Tethys (1,071 kilometers, or 665 miles across) near the right ansa, and Titan (5,150 kilometers, or 3,200 miles across) near lower right. The images were obtained on Sept. 10, 2007, at a distance of approximately 3.3 million kilometers (2.1 million miles) from Saturn at a sun - Saturn - spacecraft, or phase, angle of 33 degrees. Image scale is about 195 kilometers (121 miles) per pixel on the planet
Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, (NGC 598), the galaxy of the Triangle, is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. This image is a composite of two black and white images obtained from the 1.2m telescope of Mount Palomar, California. Spiral galaxy M33 is a mid - sized member of our Local Group of Galaxies. M33 is also called the Triangulum Galaxy for the constellation in which it resides. About four times smaller (in radius) than our Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), it is much larger than the many of the local dwarf spheroidal galaxies. M33's proximity to M31 causes it to be thought by some to be a satellite galaxy of this more massive galaxy. M33's proximity to our Milky Way Galaxy causes it to appear more than twice the angular size of the Full Moon, and be visible with a good pair of binoculars. <BR>This image is a composite from black and white images taken with the Palomar Observatory's 48 - inch (1.2 - meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope as a part of the second National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS II). The images were recorded on two type of glass photographic plates - one sensitive to red light and the other to blue and later they were digitized
