Pluto's Atmosphere - Artist's View - Pluto's Atmosphere - Pluto's Artist's View surrounded by its thin atmosphere. In 1985 it was discovered that Pluto has an atmosphere, albeit a very tenuous one. Pluto's atmosphere arises only when it approaches closer to the Sun during its highly eccentric, 248 earth years long orbit. The atmosphere likely consists of nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide, which sublimate directly from Pluto's frozen surface. As Pluto's orbit moves it away from the Sun, these gases are believed to slowly precipitate back to Pluto's surface

Gemini 4: release of Ed.White - Gemini 4: Ed White EVA - First release of an American into space made by Edward White on June 3, 1965. On June 3, 1965 Edward H. White II became the first American to step outside his spacecraft and let go, effectively setting himself adrift in the zero gravity of space. For 23 minutes White floated and maneuvered himself around the Gemini spacecraft while logging 6500 miles during his orbital walk. White was attached to the spacecraft by a 25 foot umbilical line and a 23 - ft. tether line, both wrapped in gold tape to form one cord. In his right hand White carries a Hand Held Self Maneuvering Unit (HHSMU) which is used to move about the weightless environment of space. The visor of his helmet is gold plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun

Mars: Olympus Mons - Illustration - Artist's view of the volcano Olympus Mons on Mars. Above, in the sky, the Deimos and Phobos satellites are represented. The northwest side of Olympus Mons' 20,000 foot scarps cast long shadows into the water mist and dust - filled atmosphere over the plains of the Tharsis Bulge. In the sky immediately above Olympus Mons' caldera are, left to right, Mars' satellites Deimos and Phobos. Nearly as large as the state of Arizona and three times the height of Mount Everest, Olympus Mons is the largest volcano - - and mountain - - in the Solar System. It is thought to be very old, though its last eruption may have been as (geologically) recent as 40 million years ago. Olympus Mons may yet still be an active volcano

Exoplanete Gliese 1214 b -: Gliese 1214 b (or GJ 1214 b) is a super-earth exoplanet orbiting the star Gliese 1214 in the constellation Ophiuchus, whose discovery was announced on December 16, 2009. It is located about 40 light years from the Sun. It is the third discovered exoplanet whose size is smaller than that of a gas giant and the first on which water could be present in large quantities given its size and estimated mass. It could be the first ocean planet discovered. Gliese 1214 b is an extrasolar planet that orbits the star Gliese 1214. The parent star is 13 parsecs (approximately 40 light-years) from the Sun, in the constellation Ophiuchus. The planet was discovered in December 2009. It is classified as a Super-earth because it is larger than Earth but has a mass and radius significantly less than those of the gas giants in the Solar System. After Corot-7b, it is the second such planet to be known and is the first of a new class of planets with small size and relatively low density.

Shuttle Columbia STS-1 above Earth - Space shuttle Columbia above Earth. 04/1981 - View of the cargo bay of Shuttle Columbia during its inaugural voyage in April 1981. On the craft's maiden voyage, the crew of space shuttle Columbia took this image that showcases the blackness of space and a blue and white Earth, as well as the cargo bay and aft section of the shuttle. The image was photographed through the flight deck's aft windows. In the lower right corner is one of the vehicle's radiator panels. The pentagon - shaped object in the upper left is glare caused by window reflection. STS - 1, Colombia's maiden voyage, launched on April 12, 1981, and was the inaugural flight in the Space Shuttle Program
Atmospheric Re - entry Demonstrator (ARD) - Artist's view of the rent in the terrestrial atmosphere of the ARD capsule (Atmospheric Re - entry Demonstrator). Launch into space by an Ariane 5 rocket in October 1998, this capsule was used by Europeans to successfully test the atmosphere and landing parameters for future space flights. The Atmospheric Re - entry Demonstrator (ARD) was released by an Ariane 5 on 21 October 1998. Engineers analysing data from its sub - orbital flight reported that all the capsule's systems had performed well and according to expectations. ARD reached an altitude of 830 km and splashed down to within 4.9 km of its target point in the Pacific Ocean between the Marquises and Hawaii after one hour and 41 minutes. Although not strictly a prototype of a possible future European Crew Transport Vehicle (CTV), which could fly to and from the International Space Station, ARD is a major step towards providing greater confidence in Europe's capabilities in reentry technologies for use not only in the frame of crew and equipment transport but also for future re - usable launchers

Mars - Atmosphere - View of Mars Planet with Argyre Basin, obtained by the Viking 1 probe in July 1976. Argyre measures 1300 km in diameter and is the second largest impact crater on Mars, after Hellas Planitia. The Argyre impact basin in the southern highlands of Mars. The basin, which is approximately 1,300 kilometers in diameter, was formed about 4 billion years ago during the Heavy Bombardment Period of the early Solar System when an asteroid or comet roughly 50 kilometers across impacted Mars. Argyre is believed to be the second - largest impact basin on Mars after Hellas Planitia and may be one of the best preserved ancient impact basins from the Heavy Bombardment Period
Neptune - Voyager 2 - Image of the Great Dark Spot on Neptune obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on August 23, 1989. The Great Dark Spot is the size of the Earth and winds are blowing at 300 m/s. This spot has now disappeared but other dark spots have been detected since then. Date: 08/23/89 Range: 2.8 million km. (1.7 million miles) Smallest Resolvable Feature: 50 km or 31 miles This Voyager 2 image shows the last face on view of the Great Dark Spot that Voyager 2 will take with the narrow angle camera. It was made 45 hours before the closest approach to Neptune. the image shows feathery white clouds that overlie the boundary of the dark and light blue regions. the pinwheel (spiral) structure of both the dark boundary and the white cirrus suggest a storm system rotating counterclockwise. Periodic, small - scale patterns in the white clouds, possibly waves, are short - lived and do not persist from one Neptunian rotation to the next. This color composite was made from the clear and green filter images
