William Allan (1782-1850) was a Scottish painter who specialized in historical and genre scenes. Born in Edinburgh, he studied at the Royal Academy in London and later traveled to Rome, where he became a member of the British Academy. Allan's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style, but he later developed a more romantic approach, incorporating elements of Scottish folklore and history into his paintings. He was particularly interested in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 and produced several works on this theme.
