MICHILIMACKINAC, ON LAKE HURON, by Richard Dillon & Thomas Hall, 1813, British engraving. Michilimackinac (Odawa name for Mackinac Island) Native American houses line the Lake Huron waterfront, with many of the villages engaged on the beach. In the distant high ground is Fort Mackinac. The lower building in the distance was likely a fur storehouse. The entire Straits area was officially acquired by the United States through the Treaty of Paris, 1783. (engraving)
