Noah Webster Jr., in 1833 portrait by James Herring. Webster was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, American English-language spelling reformer, political writer, and editor. He put 26 years work into 'An American Dictionary of the English Language'. Many of the differences between British and American spelling were formalized when he chose spellings that most closely reflected pronunciation (oil on canvas)
