European launchers - Illustration - European launch vehicles family in 2009 - Illustration - Artist's view of the various fusees used by the European Space Agency and launches from the Guyanese Space Centre. From left to right, the Vega launcher, Soyuz - ST, Ariane 5 ES ATV and Ariane 5 ECA. Artist view of the family of launchers to be operated on behalf of ESA from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's Spaceport, in Kourou, English Guiana. From left to right: Vega, ESA's new small launcher, is designed to loft single or multiple payloads to orbits up to 1,500 km in altitude. Its reference payload capability is about 1,500 kg to a circular 500 - km - high Sun - synchronous orbit but it can also loft satellites from 300 kg to more than 2 metric tons, as well as piggyback microsatellites of less than 100 kg each. Soyuz - ST, the improved version of Russia's Soyuz workhorse launcher with a new digital avionics and a wider, Ariane 4 - type payload fairing. A new launch pad is being built in the CSG for Soyuz vehicles. Ariane 5 ES, another version of the Ariane 5E featuring a restartable version of Ariane 5G's storable propellant upper stage. One of its primary payloads is the Autonomous Transfer Vehicle (ATV) for resupply and reboost missions to the International Space Station. Ariane 5 ECA, the most powerful version of the Ariane 5E, an evolution of the generic Ariane 5 launcher with an increased propellant load in its solid booster stages and an improved capacity for the liquid oxygen tank of its cryogenic core stage to feed its new Vulcain 2 main engine. The Ariane 5 ECA was first launched on December 11, 2002. Its payload capacity to geostationary transfer orbit reaches 10 metric tons
Comparison of Sun and Betelgeuse sizes - Size comparison: Betelgeuse and Sun - Betelgeuse star is a supergeant red star in the constellation Orion. It's one of the biggest stars known. It appears on this illustration at the scale next to the Sun (at the top). Betelgeuse is a red giant, one of the largest stars known. It forms the left shoulder of the constellation Orion. If Betelgeuse was placed at the center of our solar system, its fuzzy edge would extent out well beyond the orbit of Mars
Asteroide Vesta and other asteroides - Asteroid Vesta compared to other asteroids - Comparison of the sizes of the nine asteroides visits to date by space probes. The asteroid Vesta, with a diameter of 530 km, is the largest. This composite image shows the comparative sizes of nine asteroids. Up until now, Lutetia, with a diameter of 81 miles (130 kilometers), was the largest asteroid visited by a spacecraft, which occurred during a flyby. Vesta, which is also considered a protoplanet because it's a large body that almost became a planet, dwarfs all other small bodies in this image, with its diameter sizing up at approximately 330 miles (530 kilometers)
Woolly Mammoth and African Elephant - Comparison - Woolly Mammoth & African Elephant compared - An adult woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) that lived 150,000 years ago is compared to an adult African elephant (Loxodonta) today. The woolly mammoth was 3.3 metres tall to the shoulder and weighed 5 tonnes, while the African elephant was 3.3 metres tall to the shoulder and weighed 4.5 tonnes. An adult Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) from 150 thousand years ago is compared to a modern adult African Elephant (genus Loxodonta). The Woolly Mammoth is 11 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 11,000 pounds, while the African Elephant is 11 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 10,000 pounds
Size Comparison: Earth and Jupiter - Jupiter and Earth compared - Comparison of the sizes of the Earth and Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. Diameter of Earth: 12 756.28 km Diametre of Jupiter: 142,984 km Jupiter's diameter is over ten times greater than the Earth's. If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 426 pounds at Jupiter's cloud tops. Jupiter is five times further from the Sun than the Earth. Jupiter is so large that its famous Great Red Spot (actually a giant, hurricane-like storm that's at least 400 years old) would easily swallow the Earth. Jupiter spins so fast on its axis that it bulges noticeably at its equator (a day on Jupiter is about ten hours long)
Supernova 1987A before and after explosion - Supernova 1987A with precursor image overlaid - Image of the Supernova 1987A, obtained on March 8, 1987. The photo of the star Sanduleak - 69* 202, photographed two years ago. Images obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. The brightest star in the colour photograph is supernova 1987A, photographed with the AAT two months before it reached its maximum brightness. Superimposed in register on this image is a negative photograph of the region around the supernova copied from an AAT plate that was exposed in 1985, two years before the supernova was seen to explode. The precursor star appears to be a peculiar shape only because its image is blended with those of two other stars that happen to lie in the same line of sight. Many similar blended images can be seen in the colour photograph. However, it was soon found that the brighter of the three had exploded, and that was a star which had been previously observed and catalogued, as Sanduleak - 69* 202

Comparison between Earth and Mars - Earth and Mars compared - Comparison at the scale of Earth and Mars sizes. The diameter of the planet Mars is half the diameter of the Earth. Mars' diameter is half that of the Earth's It has ten percent the mass If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 68 pounds on Mars. Mars is half again further from the Sun than the Earth The vast deserts of North Africa are no match for the planet-wide desert that is Mars. While the Earth is host to oceans of liquid water and has a relatively dense water-rich atmosphere, Mars is exceedingly dry, cold, and so far as we know, sterile. It is believed that Mars lost most of its water to space a long time ago, and any water that remains is frozen at the poles and locked deep in the ground as permafrost. It is an interesting coincidence that the total surface area of Mars is about the same as the surface area of dry land on the Earth

Supernova 1987A before and after explosion - Supernova 1987A before and after the explosion - Images of the Supernova 1987A, on the left, obtained on March 8, 1987, and of the same photograph field on the right on February 5, 1984. Images obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. Sometime during 23 February 1987 a supernova exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a nearby galaxy. However, the LMC is about 170,000 light years distant, so the supernova exploded 170,000 years ago. It was discovered the following day and brightened rapidly to become the first supernova to be easily visible to the unaided eye for almost 400 years. This photograph shows the field around the site of the supernova in great detail, both before the supernova exploded (right) and about 10 days afterwards, when it was still brightening

Different types of brown dwarves - Artist's view - Different types of brown dwarves. Artwork - From left to right: brown dwarf type M, the youngest and most massive, temperature between 200 and 3000 degres Kelvin; brown dwarf type L, between 1500 and 2000 degres Kelvin; brown dwarf type T, between 1200 and 1500 degres Kelvin; brown dwarf type T but colder, from 1200 to 600 degres Kelvin; brown dwarf type still indefinite, less than 600 degres Kelvin; finally, on the right, Jupiter for size comparison. From left to right: a brown dwarf of type M (the youngest and most massive brown dwarves), a brown dwarf of type L, then a type T, another type T but colder, then another brown dwarf with a type unidentified yet which is colder, at last Jupiter for comparison
Titan, Saturn satellite seen by Cassini - Saturn's moon Titan as seen by Cassini spacecraft: Titan images obtained by the Cassini probe on 21 March 2017. On the left, Titan seen in real colors. On the right, infrared image showing surface details as well as clouds in the northern hemisphere. These views were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on March 21, 2017. Images taken using red, green and blue spectral filters were combined to create the natural-color view at left. The false-color view at right was made by substituting an infrared image (centered at 938 nanometers) for the red color channel. A large, bright and feathery band of summer clouds can be seen arcing across high northern latitudes in the view at right. The views were acquired at a distance of approximately 613,000 miles (986,000 kilometers) from Titan. Image scale is about 4 miles (6 kilometers) per pixel

Comparison of Sirius B, Sun and Earth Sizes - Size comparison: Sirius B, Earth and Sun - Sirius B star is a white dwarf star located 8.6 years - light of the Earth. A little larger than the Earth (but of a mass close to that of our Sun), it appears on this illustration at the scale next to the Earth and before the Sun. Sirius B, a white dwarf star just 8.6 light - years from Earth, is a little larger than our world, and far smaller than our Sun. It orbits the brightest star in Earth's sky, Sirius A, at a distance equivalent to the distance from our Sun to Uranus. While Sirius B is about the size of Earth, it has almost as much mass as our Sun
Size comparison: Earth and Saturn - Saturn and the Earth compared - Saturn, the second largest planet in the solar system compared to Earth. Saturn's diameter is about nine times greater than the Earth's. If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 165 pounds at Saturn's cloud tops (despite Saturn's enormous mass, its density is so low that if you were able to stand atop Saturn's clouds, you would feel a pull of gravity slightly less than what you feel on the Earth's surface). Saturn is ten times further from the Sun than the Earth. Saturn has the honor of being the second-largest planet in the Solar System, though it has only 30% the mass of its jovian better Jupiter. Like Jupiter, Saturn is blanketed by thick clouds and is believed to have no solid surface except for a relatively small, Earth-size core of rock and metals
Comparison of the sizes of the Sun, Rigel, Betelgeuse and Antares - Size comparison: Sun, Rigel, Betelgeuse and Antares - The Sun (small dot on the right), and the blue supergiant star Rigel, are here compared to the supergiant red stars Betelgeuse (left), and Antares (in the background). The Sun (little dot at right) and Rigel are dwarfed by the red supergiants Betelgeuse (at left) and Antares (in background). Antares (alpha Scorpii) is the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius
Sarcosuchus & crocodiles compared - The Sarcosuchus or Sarcosuchus imperator was a reptile of the order of crocodilians that was between 11 and 14 metres long and weighed nearly 10 tonnes. He lived about 110 million years ago in the cretace. It was one of the biggest crocodiles that existed on Earth. It is here compared to a Crocodylus porosus, on the left, and a Gavialis gangeticus, on the right. An adult crocodyliform reptile of the genus Sarcosuchus from 110 million years ago is compared to a modern saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) on the left and a modern gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) on the right. The Sarcosuchus is about 40 feet long and weighs 10 tons* while the saltwater crocodile is 20 feet long and weighs 2 tons and the gharial is 20 feet long and weighs about 350 pounds The saltwater crocodile is currently the largest of all living reptiles, as well as the largest terrestrial and riparian predator in the world, while the gharial, aka fish-eating crocodile, is the long-living and most aquatic of all modern crocodiles. Both modern crocodiles have been extant in their current forms for about 50 million years, though sadly the gharial is critically endangered with less than 300 known living individuals today.

Artist's view of the star Achernar and the Sun - Achernar. Artwork - Achernar is the brightest star in the constellation Eridan. It is characterized by a very high speed of rotation on itself (in 6.30 hours), so it is the most flattened star known to date. It's a supergiant B star. Bottom left, the Sun for comparison. Achernar is the brightest star of the constellation of Eridanus. It is star of type B, a supergiant star. Its rotation is extremely fast which gives it an oblate shape. Lower left is the Sun for size comparison

Tarantula nebula before the appearance of supernova 1987A - The Tarantula Nebula, before supernova SN1987A - Tarantula Nebula photographed in 1984. Image obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. By great good fortune, the star (Sanduleak - 69* 202) which exploded as the supernova, had been observed some years previously and was found to be a typical young, bluish star, much hotter and brighter than stars like the Sun. There are many similar stars in this part of the LMC which is dominated by the spectacular red cloud of the Tarantula Nebula. It in such nebulae that stars are formed, often in compact groups such as those scattered across this photograph, which was taken in 1984
Eurohippus and horse compared - Eurohippus is a prehistoric mammal, ancestor of the horse, living from the middle to the end of the eocene. He is represented here compared to a modern horse. Mature Eurohippus 42 million years ago are compared to a modern adult horse (Equus ferus caballus). Eurohippus is only about 20 inches long and weighs just a few pounds*, while the modern horse is 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 1,000 pounds.* Values are estimates only based upon available paleontological data
Comparison between Earth and Venus - Earth and Venus compared - Comparison at the scale of the sizes of Earth and Venus, seen here without their atmosphere. The size of the Venus planet is roughly the same as that of the Earth. This to-scale image suggests how the Earth and Venus might appear without their atmospheres. Venus' diameter is 86% that of the Earth's. It has 82% the mass. If you weigh 180 pounds on the Earth, you would weigh 163 pounds on Venus. Venus is about three-quarters the Earth's distance from the Sun. While Venus is roughly the same size and density as the Earth, it is otherwise a very different world. Earth's surface is a varied one, with liquid water covering three quarters of its surface. Those areas not under water have been highly modified by plate tectonics, weather, and life itself. Venus on the other hand is far too hot to host liquid water. Volcanoes, massive lava flows and the occasional impact crater characterize its surface. Latest observations suggest that Venus may periodically resurface itself completely - and catastrophic - through massive, planet-wide volcanic eruptions. The last such resurfacing “” event”” appears to have occurred about 500 million years ago
Nuclei of the 5 cometes visited by probes - 5 Comets nucleus seen by spacecrafts - Comparison of the size of the nuclei of the five comets visited by space probes. This montage shows the only five comets imaged up close with spacecraft. The comets vary in shape and size. Comet Hartley 2 is by far the smallest and the most active of small comets. This jet activity can be seen extending from the comet's surface and into its outer shell of gas and dust, or coma. This is first time scientists have been able to link jets to the details of the surface

Dwarf planets - Dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris compared - Comparison at the scale of dwarf planets. From left to right are represented Ceres, Pluto and Eris. Ceres was elevated from asteroid to the status of dwarf planet in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reviewed Pluto's status as the solar system's 9th planet. Pluto was subsequently demoted to dwarf planet. In this image, from left to right are the dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris. Eris was discovered in 2003 and is now the largest of the known dwarf planets. It is believed to be slightly more massive than Pluto and follows a highly eccentric orbit that alternately brings it as close as the orbits of Neptune and Pluto and as far as over twice Pluto's furthest distance from the Sun. It was the discovery of Eris that prompted the re-evaluation of Pluto as a planet
Comparison of Sun Sizes, Sirius and Rigel - Size comparison: Sun, Sirius and Rigel - The Sun (yellow star at the top), and the star Sirius A, (the brightest star in the sky) compared to the huge star Rigel, a supergeant blue star in the constellation of Orion. The brightest star in Earth's sky, Sirius, is seen here next to our Sun and the blue giant Rigel. Sirius has a small companion star, Sirius B. Rigel forms the left foot in the constellation Orion, and its light is equal to 40,000 suns
