Dinah Roe was born in Bakewell in Derbyshire in 1923 into a family of professional artists.
After her war service in the Red Cross, she gained a place at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she was a student for three years. Dinah married in 1950 and had five children. During this time her work was severely limited. She eventually returned to the Slade, where she learn printmaking and painted at home.

She was invited to have a solo exhibition at Canterbury Cathedral for a month, which was followed by Chichester and Winchester cathedrals. She celebrated the latter with the launching of her book ''Allegories of Heaven''.
