Donatella Merlo was born in Turin in 1927 and, continuing the family artistic tradition of her grandfather Camillo, her father Metello and her uncle Felice Vellan – all well-known landscape artists active between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – she completed her studies at the Accademia Albertina in Turin as a pupil of Felice Casorati. Of Casorati, Donatella said that he "changed her way of observing. The gaps between one object and another in the compositions I was designing now gave shape, and almost animated, the various elements placed on different levels and perspectives." During her long career as a painter, with an always renewed and meditated stylistic research, she has experimented with various techniques, from oil painting, to watercolour, to pastels, to graphic arts (engraving and drawing). The themes that marked Donatella's work are that of shells, armours (1960s), furniture, shoes (1970s), mannequins (1980s), waterfalls (1990s), threads and textures (2000s).
Donatella Merlo è nata a Torino nel 1927 e, proseguendo la tradizione artistica familiare del nonno Camillo, del padre Metello e dello zio Felice Vellan, noti paesaggisti attivi tra Otto e Novecento, ha compiuto gli studi presso l’Accademia Albertina di Torino come allieva di Felice Casorati. Del suo maestro, Donatella scrisse che "cambiò il mio modo di osservare. I vuoti tra un oggetto e l'altro delle composizioni che andavo disegnando davano ora forma, e quasi animavano, i vari elementi adagiati su piani e prospettive diverse”. Durante la sua lunga attività di pittrice, con una ricerca stilistica sempre rinnovata e meditata, ha sperimentato varie tecniche, dalla pittura a olio, all'acquerello, ai pastelli, alle arti grafiche (incisione e disegno). I temi che più hanno segnato l'opera di Donatella sono quello delle conchiglie, delle corazze (anni Sessanta), dei mobili, delle scarpe (anni Settanta), dei manichini (anni Ottanta), delle cascate (anni Novanta), dei fili e delle trame (anni Duemila). ...
