George Washington, by William Winstanley, 1803. American painting, oil on canvas. Winstanley was an English-born landscape artist who emigrated to the US in the 1790s. He settled in Philadelphia, where George Washington purchased four of his landscapes, three of which are now at Mt. Vernon. In the US, he also painted portraits, such as this one of Washington, before he returned to England around 1804-06 (oil on canvas)

JOHN ADAMS, by William Winstanley, 1798, British-American painting, oil on canvas. The portrait was painted when Adams was the second President of the United States from 1797-1801. It was not painted from life, but copied from one or more other works. Winstanley was a British painter who worked in the US the 1790s to the early 1800s. His landscapes were collected by George Washington (oil on canvas)
